      It doesn't settle. JL usually doesn't develop ideas, but instead goes for quantity of them. If he used the device of staying on one idea for a period, he could control and get with the rhythm section. Coltrane would play certain figures at times to get the bass and drums in line, then go on from there.

      Yeah not sure what you all mean. Part of what makes Lovano a master is the way he can manipulate space and time, as well as complex harmonic phrases and ideas. He certainly plays behind the beat here but I assure you it is intentional, he's a true master. If anything the rhythm section isn't used to playing with a horn player that can manipulate time the way Lovano does, hence why it sounds like the tempo never locks in. Not a knock on the rhythm section, they are great. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong.
