Er besticht seit Jahrzehnten durch Kreativität mit dem gewissen Swing. Und er hat durch sein Spiel eine Reichweite erlangt, die sich durch die gesamte Geschichte des modernen Jazz erstreckt. Joe Lovano, Jahrgang 1952, ist ein Großmeister seines Instruments und mit seinem Tenorsaxofon im Laufe seiner langen Karriere ganz schön rumgekommen. Der US-Amerikaner trat unter anderem zusammen mit Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck und Dave Holland und Abbey Lincoln auf und initiierte etliche Formationen; Dreier-Konstellationen, bestehend aus Bass, Schlagzeug und Bass, sind seine Spezialität.
Joe Lovano ist vielfach mit Preisen ausgezeichnet worden, war an zahlreichen Einrichtungen als Dozent tätig, um sein Wissen und Können weiterzugeben und hat über 30 Alben veröffentlicht. Das Spiel des Saxofonisten ist lebendig, so sensibel wie melodisch, harmonisch offen und rhythmisch frei. Joe Lovano, so Bewunderer des begnadeten Instrumentalisten, trage die reiche Geschichte des Jazz und speziell die des Tenorsaxofons im Kopf mit sich herum.

The jazz band I was part of for essentially Ellington went and saw Joe at the village vanguard the night before our Ellington performance, and only 2 or 3 other people in the band other than me truly appreciated it, everyone else kept saying “what even was that? There wasn’t a groove the entire show” but I hope now they look back and realize how freakin cool that was. This is such different music, it’s so intense in ways I hadn’t realized in the jazz world. Mind boggling
