I was invited to drive one to Belgium to experience the most powerful Mini ever for myself. Is it fast enough and good enough to rival car like the Golf R and Audi S3 ?

I've watched almost all of your Mini Clubman's related reviews and I have to admit that these were very helpful. I've tried driving Hatch JCW, Clubman S, Countryman JCW and as I really like all of these machines I've picked Clubman JCW. British Racing Green was my choice of color. Now I just have to wait for it... 6 months! :-/ Thank you @Petrol Ped for helping me make up my mind.

@@d333my Totally true! Apart from the growing up part.... hence why we buy Mini's, we just make mini copies of ourselves and need child seats :-)
This is honestly one of my favorite cars I've been able to drive MINI / BMW nailed it with this car. I had reservations of the lack of stick but it just drives so damn nicely. The steering feels great and gives nice feedback. It's very torquey throughout the power band, it makes all the right sounds. Best I can say is drive it if you can.

Great review as always. Looks like a great car with the 4 wheel drive system and the extra power. I’m on the hunt for a practical car but also something that is fun to drive, this is definitely something I’m going to be looking at and test driving

I drove a JCW hatchback last year (2018 model) and that had an auto box and I loved it. The handling and ride we first rate and the seats were so, so comfortable and grippy too and not slippery like the leather seats on the Cooper S I have.
This one though, in the Clubman spec, with the twin opening doors is really good looking. Can't really see a fault with it.

Excellent stuff, really enjoyed that. Especially having been on Belgian roads recently. Will be asking about a test drive to see if I could live with the auto box for GP3 purposes, and glad that proper MINI noise is back.
I could live with the box, even if I'd like a manual more 😜
I’ve always hated the idea of the Clubman but for some reason this JCW really appeals to me. Maybe I’ll have to consider this when the time comes to replace my Golf GTI! Great video Peter 👍
I was never a fan until I drove the previous Gen Clubman. Still drives like a Mini but WAY more practical, and now by some margin the fastest Mini you can buy 👍

Flipping mental standard jcw clubman all the aftermarket modifications manufacturers out there will be having a blast to upgrade that and the jcw mini 2wd may have torque steer maybe why it is automatic to help control very much enjoyed this one don't leave ruby alone too long when you get it cheers 🎩

Fantastic review Ped, love the noise it makes from standard, my neighbours would still hate me first thing in the morning. As you say GP3 could be a fun drive with FWD, clubman is on my radar to replace my current Mini in a couple of years time.

I've got the F44 M235i Xdrive - stuck TDI tuning box on it - boom 306 to 367 and its absolutely insane. I know its not the mini but that engine and the Xdrive combined is the nuts
Love the Mini Clubman,it's a beautiful car,but the gear box handle could be design better.Next time you guys chat with the bosses at BMW Mini mention to them to put into production a compact SUV and a double cab truck with all the mini touches in it.I would really like to see a well design SUV and truck with the Mini logo on it.

We were in Bruges last week! Our Golf gti edition 30 broke down on the way, but via a motoring forum we met a kind ex pat who amazingly trailered us all the way home from Belgium to Kent at the end of our holiday!

I currently drive a 2018 M140i but have owned both a 2006 JCW as well as a 2016 JCW 3-door (the later being what I sold for the BMW) and I can honestly say that despite the BMW being faster, the Minis have been 2 of the most fun cars to own and the crackles and pops from the newer JCW made it such a blast to drive. This has me wanting to book a test drive when they finally launch here in SA! 😜

when I bought my countryman JCW 231hp. I thought that when Mini puts 306hp 4WD on the 3 door hatch it would kill or arm the competition pretty seriously. It would be the ultimate car :306 hp , nice design , kart feeling when you drive, 40k€, bmw technology...This would be my ( and of a lot of people) car wet dream. When I change next year I’ll take the hatch JCW and modify the exhaust to free the sound. Come on BMW engineer do the hatch version of the 306 HP JCW. Don’t let us down!!!!!
The JCW GP already has the 306hp engine from the JCW Clubman. Having talked to lots of people at Mini I am pretty sure we won’t be seeing an All4 version of the hatch. The homologating expense is simply too high 😢
It is a very sad news to read at breakfast my friend. 😆. The costs of homologation for neutering the exhaust isn’t not high for them but a hatch 4WD is😆.
The GP is a hell of a car but I am not sure about having 306hp on FWD isn’t too suicidal 😬. Anyway thanks for the feedback, videos and let’s enjoy these toy cars properly before they switch them to electric
I like your videos about the MIni, but I watched a video which explained how difficult it is to repair a Mini if you want to fix it yourself, because it can be very difficult to reach an area for simple repairs. Many many years ago, I fixed a simple hose pipe, but to get to it, I took out the fan with fan belt and other small parts just so I could do the repair on the leaking rubber pipe because I couldn't get to it from underneath the car. It would have been a repair job of about 10 min, but because I had to take out other parts to get to it, I think I spent at least 2 hours on it. I'm not a mechanic and the car wasn't mine but I got there in the end. I was thinking about getting a Mini, but after watching a video on the new Mini and which brought back memories of those good old days of do-it-yourself and bleeding hands and fingers and swearing on the job, I am having second thoughts, especially when I see that BMW didn't seem to improve that side of things when designing the new mini. Thanks all the same for some great videos, which I enjoy watching.

Good review. I’m sure the car will be a success. Flappy paddles really don’t have any place in the GP3. Same as my M2 comp. I couldn’t put my finger on what was missing at first. After realising I spent more time in the wife’s manual Mini clubman copper S manual the penny dropped. If you plan to daily then paddles. For weekend fun it has to be a stick. I really hope the GP3 didn’t disappoint.

When you was trying out the gearbox in sport /manual it does not operate in the same way as the dual clutch auto box as for instance in a Cooper S. I’m wondering if that was part of the problem you found when testing it out.
Surely one of the most bizarre cars of modern times, a very strange combination of body type and specification, but honestly who'd want one? Four wheel drive with zero ground clearance equates to a pointless conundrum of a car. Appreciate your quality review as always, cheers.
4 wheel drive isn't to go major off roading. It's to improve drive and cornering if you have to go on rally style roads/ tracks and bad weather..
4 wheel drive there to add traction and stability and not for off-roading. Much like Audi's Quattro and BMW's X-Drive 👍

I've. Had 6 minis from the first right up to the present day sorry to say but the 5 door hatch s does it for me but now I'm beginning to doubt its capabilities but as a mini fan KEEP IT MINI lol
I’ve had a golf R and was great fun so it’s good to see another Choice to choose from! Is it better than rivals that’s tricky but plenty of opportunity for test drives

It’s a lighter M135i with the same drivetrain. I love my clubman Cooper S but the depreciation on it is a killer and the run flat tyres are awful at tramlining.
I like the new rear lights and not using the ugly bumper for brake lights at all times. But I wonder why they didn’t just redesign those bumper lights and make them thinner!
Only car I've ever owned is a used 2012 base model Mini Cooper. This Clubman is amazing, would be an awesome upgrade

Good luck at Coombe! I had 15 minutes there last year and could have fried eggs on the wheels afterwards! The lack of run off also worried me. Seriously hard on the brakes as well. I am trying my luck at Bedford Autodrome tomorrow which should be a lot kinder.

Turned out is wasn't much kinder - track temp at 30 degrees resulting in 4 melted ContiSport 5's. I tended to limit it to 2-3 laps at a time too. Great circuit though.

Hi there, done castle Combe in my seven type kit car last two years and would agree it can be dangerous due to lack of run off. Would advise anyone to get some tuition as it’s amazing what you don’t know your doing wrong until someone shows you!! Also been to Bedford on the Palmer experience track days which is a incredible experience driving 7 cars and would recommend this to anyone to really feel how down force works. Not cheap mind. I’m also a speed Marshall would advise to build up your speed as there is always someone faster on the day! Good luck on next track day
Is it just me or do the pair of them look like a couple of school lads that nicked their dads ride ..... honest review once again and I think the GP3 is going to be fitted with the all wheel drive system alas the Golf R and the Focus RS as the power and especially the torque will likely require it !👍🏻🇨🇦

Hello pal. Finally got Wi-fi so I can start to catch up. On our 2nd week of a total of what will be 5 weeks in all honeymooning lol. Back for a week next week, then off up to Whitby, then down to York. Missed not having signal big time. Nice looking lil growler. I’m itching to drive a Mini again.

Cracking review from an actual JCW Mini owner who told other JCW owners all we needed to know. I have a 2015 JCW & I adore it. It reminds me of being 17 again, when you just went for a drive, just to have a drive! Unfortunately now with 2 children the 3dr Mini isn't practical enough even as a 2nd car BUT I can't find a replacement that gives me the same feeling as the R56..... I may have just found it!
How did you find the blind spot from the back doors?
Does it come with the magic Bluetooth button option to bypass the silencer?
What MPG did you get... the Mini dealer I bought the JCW's from told me, "if you ever get 30mpg from this car you have to hand us back the keys, because you don't deserve to JCW!"
This could well be the car for you ! Didn't notice a big problem with a blindspot. Sadly new emissions rules means the JCW Pro exhaust with the magic button is a thing of the past. It does sound good but I'm sure someone will develop a nice after market exhaust for it. Sorry, didn't check the MPG, I was too busy having fun. Interestingly, my Stage 2 Roadster JCW will do 45mpg on a long run 😜
Get a countryman or clubman. Probably the closest you can find that will accommodate your needs,while keeping some kart handling

So having had my Mini JCW for nearly two years and thinking about changing it to a a mini JCW cabriolet I now don’t know what to do and just hope that the whole JCW range follows the JCW clubman . It looks lovely sounds lovely and I am sure it drives lovely can’t wait to drive one myself . Of course mini are currently offering 0% finance on the apparently the whole mini range I wonder whether this model is included and I bet lots of people take advantage of it if it applies

Hi Peter I'm going to take you to task over the JCW. At 37.5 k it's right up there with the S3 but it's more than 3k expensive than a golf R brand New. Plus the JCW s boot is puny with it's rear seats up compared to the other two. I'd take the golf R in a heartbeat. Regards Simon.
You are right about the boot, but the interior of the Mini is on another level compared to the Golf. Way more premium and funky. Horses for courses I guess 😜

I'm not sure but I think they might be trying to increase Clubman sales. Countryman already accounts for 25% of new Mini sales, whereas Clubman is only 11% 👍

It is a great car for sure, however for our main family car it would not quite be big enough. Certainly compared to the S4 😪

No, I don't think the hatch will get the All4 system and a hatch with that much power is called the GP 😜
Not sure the 3 door can fit the All4 system, maybe the 5 door can being a little longer? Audi managed it on the S1, which is similar size to the 5 door MINI

Very interested in if you have comments on the handling of this car vs the Golf R, WRX, etc. Even better if you got to compare those to the 2020 Mini Countryman JCW! I am actively looking at purchasing a AWD ~300 hp four door and the new countryman jcw is looking pretty great. The one thing missing is handling comparisons between it (countryman is slightly taller and slower than the clubman) and other AWD fast cars.
The Countryman does handle like a much smaller car 👍

Re gears in auto box. My first new car was a mk3 fiesta ghia with CVT which was awful! In recent years I’ve had Astras with 1.6i 6 speed auto. My current turbo (1.4 turbo) revs at 2,000 at motorway speed. Apparently, the 2020 model has an 8 speed automatic, 3 cylinder engine producing the same power and acceleration. How many forward gears do you actually need?! Great video as always. 👍🏻

Petrol Ped - you've nearly sucked me into buying a jcw clubman.... there are so few comparison videos, but this seems to be direct or similar competition to a golf R. You've obviously driven both - can you include any sort of content around how they feel, or why you seem so particularly in love with the jcw? Thank you!
I can look into doing that. For me though, good as the Golf R is it just feels and bit sterile and bland. The Mini has tons of character and puts a much bigger smile on your face 👍
@@PetrolPed Absolutely hear you on that - I had a 15 golf R for a short period, and several other VW's. They're great daily drivers, but they very much lack personality. The clubman seems like a great daily driver, WITH personality. Surprised I've never owned a mini cause they really seem to fit me.
It just needs some pops and bangs on up changes and it would sound mega (like the Golf R, TTS, etc). Inside, is that real or fake engine sound? It looks like a great stealthy B road weapon!

Is it an Aisin gearbox? Mazda's MX5 Turbo Mazdaspeed had an Aisin manual gearbox.
Another great review, very interesting proposition from Mini. I used to own the R55 Clubman JCW and I loved it although front wheel drive it was a riot to drive, does the 4wd make it a bit boring and predictable?
Certainly not boring. It still has that go-kart feel but you can just get on the power much earlier and the grip is immense 👌

Hi ped ive been looking at one of these vehicles. Ive gone to my local mini dealership amd have found a press launch jcw the one in the screen shots (btb) its at a good price £26500 with 2000miles on clock but would you advise to buy a press launch mini? Do they look after them or are they ragged about?
That is a very good price. They will have been put through their paces but not sure you should worry too much 😬
