I was a competitive gymnast and this man saved my life! I was in university and missing classes because getting out of bed was so painful and sitting in class was unbearable. I only saw him once and his recommendations and education turned my life around. I was flexion and extension intolerant and surgery to fuse L2 and L3 was recommended. Within 6 months of my first visit I was pain free with no surgery needed. It's been 12 years and I'm still pain free. My personal trainer is the one who told me about him.

Did you see him on your own, or solicit the insurance?
If you saw him on your own, how long did it take to get an appointment? Did you contact him through his website. In other words did your trainer have direct contact, because that’s what I’d like to do.
Again Thank you for responding to my comment!
I’m happy your problem was resolved for you without surgery. Continue to enjoy Life!!😀

I went for an adjustment on Monday and the doctor pulled something on my left side of my lower back that has me in pain. I had a sciatic nerve flared up 8 weeks ago I could not walk for 6 of those weeks. I just started to walk slowly. But my doctor sent me for Chiro treatment and now this pain happened and I can't walk properly again. I am so worried. Oh how I wish I could get to see this doctor. Can you please tell me where in Canada is he located. I can tell my daughter who is living there to go see him because she suffers with her feet problems as well.

Watching this and Reading McGill's book about what was actually causing my back pain and what to do to prevent and help reduce it an eliminate it has made me fell the best I have in many years. I no longer wake up at night in pain. I no longer wake up in the morning barely able to get out of bed. I'm finally able to lift weights without fear of having to stop due to pain or wake up the next morning feeling even worse than normal!
Thank you Dr. McGill for all the work to figure out how the back works and then sharing that info in a way that I can use to reduce and pretty much eliminate the pain I had and get back to feeling good again! I try and share it with all the people I know that have any back pain at all, which is most of the people I know. Some refuse to believe but they do so at their own loss!

I'm a retired RN and fitness instructor. Surely appreciate this Q&A session. Currently having a bout of sciatica nerve irritation. Working on stretches etc that I viewed on Bob and Brads Utube videos.. I've found that sitting esp with one leg crossed exaggerates my symptoms. Trying to retrain to keep both my feet on the floor and stay connected to both sitsbones. Using ice and heat alternately. Four visits to the chiropractor with only temporary results. My self treatment seems to be gradually working. Patience is key and pacing my urges to do spring yard work which is what got it started:)

A good stretch for my life-long sciatica is standing on step, and with upright back and ahnd on support, alternate heel-drops, the other foot firmly with the whole sole supporting. I count slowly to 10-15 and move very cautiously. I do this both proactively and to release when in pain. Which stretch is your best?

This was such A treat to watch! I enjoyed every second listening to both of these gentlemen and their expertise. I found this relaxing and extremely helpful in understanding the mechanics of the body as it pertains to back pain. These approaches should be mainstream, A standard for all medical practitioners. I feel that so many if not most individuals are caught up in what I refer to as bandaid medicine. I wish all doctors/specialists were as thorough and practical in their approach as this man. I believe that this book will make for an educational and eye opening read so I cant wait to get A copy for myself.

    • @KaitAC
      @KaitAC Год назад

He's a PhD. doctor, not a medical doctor, so that explains everything in your comment. Also, his approach seems straightforward in the presentation here, but it's extremely involved, and these things could not simply be added to medical school. Medical doctors certainly need to be better connected to rehabilitation professionals to recognize when a referral there is needed though.
It's unfortunate there is such a disconnect between medicine and physical rehab but having studied both, I can tell you that they're very different, and in most cases, the type of people in medical school would not be successful in the rehabilitation stuff anyways.
For reference to support my understanding of this, Stu and I have the same undergraduate degree; he went on to a masters, PhD, and sees patients in a rehab setting. I went to medical school after undergrad. However, before medical school I was his patient and also attended his course for rehab professionals. Most of the students in my medical school class were completely unable to follow when I was talking about anything physical rehab related.

Absolutely there is periformis syndrome---and you cured me! Have had bouts of sciatica in different places since injuring my back in college 50 years ago, and then again 15 years ago which resulted in laminectomy and discectomy. A movement on an x-ray table about 4 years ago (for my knee) caused a click in my back hip and a terrible bout of what I thought was sciatica again. Got myofascial release and PT. After watching many of our videos I began to wonder if it was Perifromis. Saw the video where you hung your leg off the side of the table, and got that click to release about 5 different times in a few months until the pain stopped altogether. That was about 2 years ago. The orthopedics I went too both told me the same thing while looking on those looped up patient medical notes on the internet to give me the vague diagnosis of, "its arthritis". They did not even listen to me. When Dr. Stuart McGill said talked of the person who when walking their foot would buckle when led to performous syndrome and the need to devise a personal plan for the indiviudal is exactly what I need and am not getting. I had a lateral tibial plateau fracture that I healed on my own without intervention, and now this infrequent anomaly where my knee starts to freeze in pain until I manage to straighten it, and it usually corrects itself but not without soreness and inflammation targeted near the ulna and below the knee... now after some time an old herniated disc has reactivated up with the worst pain ever of burning, prickly pain, pins and needles, shooting pain, shocking pain, stabbing pain, throbbing pain, etc. that shoots around down my right front thigh and groin. I have been doing exercises on my own which help, but definitely would luv to find a "one visit" wonder Doctor.

Man I wish I had this Dr. when I was evaluated last year. The mask hid a lot of what my dr. was thinking and I know he had no clue what I was feeling. Except by my words. The first thing suggested was lyrica to treat the tingling in both legs. I immediately declined. (Went home an d saw the side affects & grateful I declined). Next was the spinal injection which changed the transitory tingling constant. Next they wanted to put in an implant. I said no thanks, I’m not in chronic pain, so I’m going with the diet path and eliminate sugar. (Should mention here that I was placed the previous year on a statin. One side affect of that drug was nerve damage). I stand most of my days since sitting makes things worse. It’s so hard to find competent doctors these days. I need to check out your book. Glad I discovered this interview. Thank you!

@@youtubeisajoke2546 Me, too. I'd support any racist Trump-voter with my firmest wish to heal and get pain-free. Find help and support! Take good care of yourself - body, mind and soul! Be careful with whom you listen to. Assess what I tell below and consider its worth for you, I share what has helped me and mine. Be careful with medication, you might get addicted and the pain is a language that you need to learn, not to ignore! Try warmth and cold and breathing and relaxing and supports.
You need healthy nutrition and maybe supplements to be on the sure side, not just for your muscles, but also for nerves, bones, ligaments and tendons, too. Books on nutrition by Ornish and Mateljan have helped me.
You need lots of rest, like it or not - try to find supported positions were the injured part doesn't hurt so much. It is better that you sleep and rest in small portions than even less. Give you body time to change, adapt, heal.
Don't do anything that makes the pain worse. Keep the part that hurts absolutely still in the least painful position. Move very cautiously. Try to move, alternate tension and relaxation in body-parts that don't cause more pain. Because you need all the fluids in the body to circulate, or you will not heal.
Here in the middle of the pandemic I got an herniated disc again. I followed my advice above. In my mind's eye I also constructed a muscle harness round my core to keep that part of the spine still. I knew it would cause a problem later, but I couldn't get to the hospital, and they would not have done anything for me anyways, because other problems, among them that painkillers don't suit me.
Well, in three months the bulge had gone, but now 6 months later I very gently try to dissolve that muscle-hardness I created by keeping so tense and motion-less around the herniated disc. I now very gently wriggle and bend, not for long, but shallowly, very shortly (I counted first to four and moved half an inch, a centimeter). No yoga-poses for now. No lifting, no running, no bending. Cushions and pillows to prop pain-free positions. I hope you, too, find methods and knowledge that help and support you. Try to trust in the self-healing power of the body and mind, and if you listen with attention to your body and your inner wisdom, it will tell you beyond any ideology. You can do what you need be doing with patience and gentleness! All the best wishes!

He's got a great youtube video in here somewhere about a golfer's lift. I look like my weimaraner about to bless my fig tree but up my leg goes whenever I bend over. Between that and permission to do no lifting or bending in the morning, I've not thrown my back out in over 2 years. It's still sore often but that root-canal, ice-pick in the ear, spine piercing pain fest has been noticeably absent. Thank God for Dr. McGill.

I have a bulging disk in my low back and I am flexion intolerant. Also, have a herniated and 2 bulging disks in my neck and spinal canal stenosis in my neck. I recently bought back mechanic and working through the big 3, taking micro walks, and focusing on keeping a neutral spine all the time. Honestly though, after reading the book, it makes a lot of sense, but now I am confused more than ever about my neck. Dr. McGill doesn't believe in stretching and found through his research that it can make low back issues worse. He talked about how he believes the McKenzie extension stretch for the low back can potentially make it worse, depending on your specific issue. If I am understanding Stuart McGill right, its better to keep a neutral spine and focus on stiffness vs stretching because by stretching, you can trigger a pain response and make your body more pain sensitive by your brain sending more pain receptors to the site of inflammation to have "more information." What is the Stuart McGill equivalent for the neck? Do you just focus on a neutral spine, no stretching, and neck strengthening exercises that keep a neutral spine?

I'm still working through higher progressions of the neck exercises and having faith it will help.

I have spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, bulging disc. Standing up straight, and in one place are big issues for me. I had a spinal fusion about 11 years ago. I did well until about 4 years ago.
Since I’ve been to PT three times no resolution. Now I’m seeing a neurosurgeon, and he wants me to do P T again, and take the injections, which I’ve done also... very painful only lasting 1 week or so , not 3 months as they say it’s suppose to. Is there a fix for me? Prognosis does not seem too good. I’m bent over from not being able to stand straight up. I was told that the six hour surgery should last for the rest of my life. I was 54 years when I had that fusion surgery. Now I’m told there is degeneration going on. What suggestions do have if any, for me??

You asked him about nerve blocks. I'm to have 2 diagnostic blocks at C 5 thru C7. Then if those are successful then a medial nerve block in those areas. He didn't fully answer your question. I hoped he would because, HISTORY:Was in an accident 1 1/2 years ago, whiplash, headaches, shoulder surgery, PT, frozen shoulder. MRI for arm and hand nerve pain, Finally placed on Gabapentin, two steroid shots. Now on Cymbalta to help pending procedures. It's taken a big toll on my mental health living with pain. Dr McGill was so spot on about that when pain becomes chronic.
