- Traditional Jazz, recorded 8th of October 2010 in New Orleans Royal St - as a special request for me! Great performance! Yes, this is Doreen Ketchens - for all those who wanted to know her name ;-) +++REVISITED DOREEN, WATCH THE VIDEO+++ • Doreen Ketchens - Just...

Doreen became a friend when I lived in New Orleans. She and her family played in the street near my work. I was stunned hearing her the first time .. .and every time thereafter. She is a mother, a grandmother and a friend to all who know her. She's started her grandchildon percussion right there on Royal Street. When not playing, she's got that little one right there doing homework! When I moved from New Orlans (The home of my heart), I saw her and said good by - waving from my car. She stopped playing came over and reached in giving me a hug (and a CD for the road) and said, I lovey you, God loves you. What better way to be sent off on my next adventure.
Thank you for sharing your story! I love to read personal impressions and experiences! Yeah, hope her music still accompanies to your present adventure :-)
This needs to be pinned - what a legend! Thank you for sharing!
Your work?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Doreen who?? Is she on RUclips
This lady’s playing gives me goose bumps.
She made me cry
The LUNGS on this woman. I found this video almost 10 years ago, every time i go to the french quarter i look for her. Im sure shes on to bigger things, i know shes done some bigger things than street performing in the jazz circuit. I love her so much. The chills i get....WHOOH
Hopefully you still find Doreen every time you pass French quarter, but yes, you are right, she has performed in other places, as well.
I like how the sousaphone player has the maraca too
Lol that's what I like about the tuba is that you can play other instruments at the same time
Ophis tuba: any valve instrument.
It's a tuba
It’s a SOUSAPHONE!
@@yeeturmcbeetur8197 not a trumpet really you need the other hand to kick that slide out for the D's
I saw this lady perform in person while I was stayijg at New Orleans. She has the voice of a Blues godess and lungs of steel.
Towards the end, that one note she must have held for almost 2 minutes. She has amazing lungs and carries herself so well. I'd pay her and the tuba player along with the drummer to record the old songs that jazz was playing back in the 30's and 40's. I wouldn't care about the cost or if the recording made money, it would be an honour to have Doreen record songs that I grew up with and listened to most
of my life.
I also saw her playing in NO. Her singing and playing is amazing.
Because she is GOD***
Without a doubt, Doreen Ketchens is one of the best clarinetists in the world. When I heard her live, it was a transcendental experience
Absolutely, had to visit NOLA again in 2015 for Mardi Gras and for Doreen ;-)
In my 64 years, I've listened to all types of music, this lady is out of the spectrum. Took me to another galaxy!!! Harmony, pitch perfect, range all enveloped in pure soul, like WOW!!!!!
I think she’s today’s Louie Armstrong.?.
just when you think you're good at clarinet, there's always that one person out there to school you
Disbounded x watch the clarinet player from Switzerland play Jingle Bells. I was blown away.these two are really talented💚
Be inspired! But I know exactly what you mean.
I am surprised the better ones isn't Asian (it's a joke, just in case😅)
Well that's an overused joke
She's not just first chair... she's ALLL the chairs
Who on earth would dislike this?
A trumpet player 😒 😋
did you mean: the instrument that over powers the rest of the band
Exactly, They're fantastic.
Kerry Taylor Kanye West.
NEVER LUCKY Louis Armstrong actually studied Larry Shield's clarinet licks though when he was first starting out
Man, I'm a high school jazz drummer/tuba and I'm not used to hearing the high register of the clarinets without squeaks. She is just a wonderful performer. Givin' respect.
Yesss beautiful amazing & very talented she's truly mastered the art of rockin the clarinet. Took me over a year to be able to play altissmo notes successfully without squeaks I'm still learning with along way to go. This just fuels my inspiration 💖
This lady shares her gift from God openly and freely to anyone who will simply listen. I happened upon her one Sunday morning walking to Cafe du Mon and was stopped in my tracks. This soulful spiritual rocks you to your core and force you to pause, and be thanks to God from which this talent comes. I bought her CD and searched later to learn that she was an accomplished artist, not surprised but felt even more grateful for having witnessed her humility on display and all I could do was smile.
This just made me feel like picking up the clarinet again. Haven’t touched it in like 5 years.
Seems to be a special providence! Maybe you were just waiting for that vid to pick it up again ;-)
That's the America I want to visit!
Yep, that´s what I always to see...and I wanted to see a funeral...;-)
nemo227 Nobody cares about cali. This post is about the SE
DJRU2 Good luck to come back alive.
***** Sorry, but that's just not true. You think wrong. I'm not knocking California, I think the state is absolutely beautiful. Just wish your ocean waters were warmer...freezing, even in August.
AnAscendingAngel I would like to spend time in Nola how is it? Race wise, is the weather that bad? And can you fill up a day with activities there, I heard it's so small?
Some people take their craft or their gift seriously. That girl can play!
+Richard Winston I was thinking the same thing. she's outstanding on that clarinet!
with anybody, anywhere. True dat
Gift or... practice and hard discipline (she studies too much for that)
This right here is the reason I love New Orleans. Music is the lifeblood of that town. I have actually seen this woman playing in the French Quarter. You don't only hear her, you feel her. Let the good times roll.
What an immensely talented woman!
Holy shit she's freakin amazing. There's not enough money in the world to compensate her for her unique approach and musical gifts. I'm now completely obsessed with Doreen Ketchens!
Someone Get This Woman A Record Deal!
She deserves it!
When you go see them on the street in NOLA, as I have twice, Doreen will sell you their CDs.
Praise the Lord! Lookin forward to the days we are with the Lord and worship with brothers and sisters in Christ like this.
honestly when she picks up the clarinet again ... chills
Lady, you are the queen.
she brings me to tears....every time, what a GIFT to all!!! Thank God for you Doreen.
Wow! this woman should have a album!
I'd buy it! That sent cold chills all over my body
...i see and hear her everyday...she's is definitely a jewel...
Actually, she has quite a few CDs, but she sells them there on the street out of her case. Her fanny pack is full of cash used to make change.
"Her fanny pack is full of cash used to make change" LOL
I've never been to New Orleans , But This Makes Me Want To Visit Asap
You should have gone before Katrina, (before 2005). Most of the black people
have been forced out. They even bulldozed the projects with people's clothes
still in the house!
GooglFascists have you ever been there? T hasn’t changed at all. And no, the flooded houses were not bulldozed. They are all still standing
Stevie1derr totally worth it if you ever get the chance dont think twice just go
Stevie1derr, save your money and pack your bags!! There is a spirit in this city that no other city has that I have ever been too. You will have fun, eat good food, meet great people and cry when you leave because you know you've never experienced anything like Nawlins!!
It's worth it. I live 30 mins fomrom the city and still love going whenever I can
I have never heard a clarinet being played so well... until I saw this video
Man, Miss Doreen straight up TORE IT UP on that clarinet!!! WOW!!!!
Mamma You Rock!!!! That brought tears of JOY Streaming down my face God bless you Soul Xx
so glad I wasn't the only one crying.
hearing that stirred my soul
Me too i swear I feel like I lived here in a past life or something this hits my heart right to the core
She is GOD MOTHER of Humanity African women we are GOD***
There are alot of good people out there, if we show more of them instead if all the bad ones alot of people will feel better, God bless these persons
I feel this woman could unite the World.
I was confused why this wasn't the first thing that popped up when I searched clarinet player.
Right!
OMG. Someone give her a dollar for me! She's amazing
What about the tuba
Don Richards I gave her 5$ she's great
Daniel Peterson It´s a sousaphone, Daniel ;-)
i know
haha Thanks Mr.Martin
YES THIS IS WHAT NEW ORLEANS SHOULD BE ABOUT WHEN ANYONE VISITS SUCH RAW AND PURE TALENT FULL OF JAZZ, NO WONDER IT WAS THE FIRST JAZZ CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.
You don't have to know squat about music to know that this woman's clarinet is the definition of PERFECTION.
And I don't know how anyone can walk by this. I don't care where you're going or what you have to do -- it won't save your soul the way Doreen can.
Absolutely!
I was in New Orleans last week for the first time. I saw this lady play. Damn, she can make that clarinet talk. It was hard for me to walk away. Thankx so much for posting this. Lawd have mercy, I had a good time. I will be back.😎
Wow, wow, wow, and wow some more! These fine musicians make NOLA a magic place!
Seen her on the street the best I have ever seen or heard live or recorded. Plays highly technical and with passion.
I think if I could visit New Orleans I'd have to have loads of cash to hand out to incredible talent such as this!
Why does this make me cry?
me too!
if I was rich I would give them millions of dollars
If you wish to be a success in the world, promise everything, deliver nothing. Napoleon Bonaparte.
If you were rich, I'm sure you never would have seen this video.
They aren't doing that bad . Probably killing it , rightfully so. You don't suck and play in the French Quarter. To much competition.
They'd never play for you again.
Doreen is absolutely amazing.
Indeed, she is !
Good Lord, NOLA has the most talented musicians. Spent a week in the French Quarter watching so many amazing bands. They make it look effortless, like Jazz music just runs in their veins. Watching this makes me miss NOLA so much! Ouch.
This woman and her band are awesome. Love "Just a Closer Walk". Amen!!!
ONe of my favourites as well! Want it for my funeral!
I love her so much!
She is clearly a Master Clarinetist and a Master Performer!
Absolutely! Thank you.
Young people today ,need to see this great lady play,She has super talent
Keepin it real.
All kinds of people can rub elbows and enjoy this God given gift that is undeniable love
That just blew the webs out of my soul thank you I feel so blessed
and now we clarinets laugh at the people who say we dont belong in jazz and that "Saxes will always be better"
*Morgan Freeman giggles in the distance*
You are so right!
The main problem with Clarinets though is all the white girls who play them. LOL
Never me. I worship the late, great Benny Goodman!
Hue hue xD so truue
We have clarinets in my school's jazz band. They outplay the saxes! I'm just the bassist, lol
Not so...my very black daughter played the clarinet in elementary school. And what's wrong with "white girls who play jazz?" Love me some Candy Dulfer!
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this it always surprises me and Wow
Thank you! The same here!
People are like, why do you wanna go to New Orleans? This is why 😍😍 I wish jazz could still just be about playing and having fun. It’s just so formal nowadays when youre a student learning it
IMPRESSIVE is just a very very short word. AMAZING is, aswell. Jaw Droping clarinet!!!
Woman you got serious some serious skills!
H
Every time I listen to this recoding I sob like an absolute baby, but yet here I am again.
God bless New Orleans , Jazz, and the muthafking Blues!!
She plays that clarinet like it was in the crib with her. Breathtaking!!
I guess it was... ;-)
We were all amazed by you Doreen. You are a national treasure.
I have NEVER heard of this woman until just now!!!!! She is the BEST clarinet player I have EVER heard, BAR NONE!!!!! WOW! JUST WOW!!!
I've listened to Jazz most of my life and heard all manner of excellent clarinet players but none touch her. She's amazing.
INdeed, she is!
I still love this Lady and bow down to her talents. Do y’all know how hard it is to blow a high C on a clarinet? And she takes it beyond that beautifully ten some. Give this artist her props! Much love from Ga!
People from New Orleans must find every other city boring and hell.
+Oprahs FatAss Oh I agree
Well, here in Vienna we have also street music. Wouldn't say it's boring here... just different style. 😉
+bucaneromax1 yeah just different styles 👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿
we do
They find them Interesting and then they want to go back home now...lol
This woman is serious on that clarinet. Amazing!!!
Seven years later I saw them Sunday October 24, 2017 1:00pm on Royal Street. The young girl with her school books is now all grown up and playing drums with them and they added one trumpet player and a white dude on guitar. The highlight of my day.
I like how the little girl in the back ground gets this awesome playlist going for her studies.
i love doreen. and what i love the most is she has played all over the world and for four presidents and she prefers to play on Royal St. New Orleans, LA USA. I saw her the other day as i walked down the street. God bless Doreen and her husband Larry on the sousaphone.
She's playing the hell out of that thing. Just incredible.
Watching Oct 1 2021 and it says this is 10 years ago
I hope that she is in good health and will play for years to come continuing to make people feel happy
And that she plays all over the world to spread her talent
Doreen is timeless...;-) I revisited her in 2015 to hear her again and made the same song request... I really do hope, she and her band are in good health today, without her, NOLA wouldn´t be the same...
Who is watching this amazing video in 2019!!!! 🔥😭
Jonathan Corral 2020
Doreen know she did that song proud. She and the band moved me to tears of joy.
When I was filming, I also had tears in my eyes!
Next to my 12 yr old grandaughter learning clzrinet Dorren is my fav. Hope she can play forever she gives such joy to America. Oberlin Ohio
What a joy Doreen gave to us Europeans - this music is not heard a lot at least in the area where I live. We have to come to the USA to enjoy it...
Once upon a time I was good. Really good. And those were not my words. But I'm sure that I've never been even a bit close to this woman. She is simply amazing. It would be my great honor just to meet her. To shake her hand and take my hat off. Just those who have ever played this instrument know what she does. Unbelievable. I'm shaking.
How can ANYONE not like this awesome woman's talent and the music????
It´s the envy...
Been a fan of Miss Doreen since sometime in the 1990's. Just so sweet. Thank you...
Thank you for your comment! :-)
Ive been reading about new orleans Jazz since i was 14 and now im 46, and the mystery of these wonderful people still amazes me, so much talent in one place, i really wish that one good day i will be able to set my foot on that land even just for a single day, i will kiss the street, hug at least anyone who wishes to take a photo with me in front of a sign written New Orleans, then i will have peace, with love from Botswana
Doreen Ketchens and her little ensemble have got it all. Their amazing control of their instruments (their lungs) and the musical instruments is one that can hardly be duplicated and will come around only once in a generation.
Benny Goodman was just such a person. He had the breath control of an opera singer and the mastery of his
instrument that hardly anyone could compare to. This is now my favourite music video and will be for a long time.
She breathed and blew out so much soul. I've never heard a clarinet sound so beautiful. Amazing raw talent.
Another sighting of music in it's natural habitat. It's bit illusive but when it doesn't feel threatened, boy it sound unbelievably good.
Damn, imagine being this happy doing what you love with people you love.
THIS WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE REMINDS ME THE FAB 20'S...
She had just been crowned the queen of clarinets! She's awesome and I own one of her CD's. My uncle goes to New Orleans all the time and he actually met her, that's how I got the CD. And, did you know the guy playing tuba is her husband? He's actually not a bad player either.
Christine Martin, what's this lady's name? I looked for her name in the thread but wasn't able to find it. Her playing is phenomenal.
Doreen Ketchens
Incredible.
I love how the kid is just there doing homework in the background. This is freakin' awesome.
Now that's who I call a musician
For those actually interested, her FULL name is: Doreen Ketchens
A 'few' of the commenters here didn't think to put a full name to the artist ..as they seem to have felt the need to rattle off how much 'they' like her ;-)
You are absolutely right. I have already added her full name.
Music from heaven
She's the whole package- best jazz clarinet and voice
Thats one of the finest solos Ive ever heard, from any instrument.
I could never make my clarinet sing like she does! Amazing! Beautiful!
This is New Orleans , was land of dreams! Before Katrina , of course.
Gog Bless New Orleans forever , and all that wonderful jazz musicians.
I love NO and Just A Closer Walk With Thee is, by far my, preference or my funeral. Amen
Yep, I´d like that for my funeral as well...there is no song matching better for your last travel!
bucaneromax1
Thanks for the post.
The first time i heard this song was at Preservation Hall, january 1974, Sweet Emma Barrett singing and playing piano with all those great old cats. Great times, man, great times !
Nice to meet you. Bucaneromax1.
Fabio from Brazil!
*****
Hi Fabio, sorry for the late answer! Are you kidding me, you heard Sweet Emma Barrett??? I envy you! Just saw an old video of her, thinking wow...I wanted to see her live...and Lizzy Miles, too! Julia from Austria :-D
Yes my friend.
It was january 6, 1974 ,when I had the privilege to see and hear Sweet Emma Barrett and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band with all these old cats at Preservation Hall NO.
I bought an LP there and a folder named Old Jazz ,with 6 beautiful lithographs, made by an artist named McBride, of Sweet Emma, Blanche Thomas, George Lewis , Albert "Papa"French, Wildren "Frog"Joseph an a New Orleans Function of a NO Parade Band.
40 ys. later I remember this night, as today. After the show ,my pregnant wife and me returned to the Holliday Inn Hotel walking by the streets feeling and flavoring the rich sounds and people of French Quartier.
We are still happy remembering this.
That's Life. " Memories are made of This " !
Wow! These are memories for life!!! I know what you mean, just strolling down the streets of NO...I want to return asap! I´ve been there only once, but had a deep impact on me! Well, thanks for sharing your memories with us...I´ll check the artists you mentioned. At least here in Austria hardly anybody knows them...:-( Have a nice day!
Thank you Sister Doreen for reminding me that it is high time that I have that closer walk with my Jesus! God bless you all!
her vibrato is amazing
new Orleans new Orleans
the city that never stops Jazz
I've never heard that instrument played like this! INCREDIBLE!!!
Doreen’s so freaking awesome! I love the unique sound she always brings to the songs she plays :)
She puts the clarinet to a new level!
My God she is AMAZING!! NOLA is like no other place in the USA!!!
She accompanied the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in March, 2018. She was so humbled to have been invited and the Philharmonic was graced by her participation. (Not to mention, as usual she knocked it out of the park). Love Miss Doreen ❤️
Thanks for that interesting detail. Doreen´s talent would be a welcome addition to any orchestra!
You can look for they vídeo in YT...
Take the gifts God gives you and USE them like this group does. I liked Doreen's clarinet, but then I heard her sing! Perfectly!
Imagine actually saying this, downplaying all the hard work she's done to god giving her a gift without doing anything. You're a piece of shit.
The Black women is GOD*** NO MEN GAVE HER THIS TALENT!!! Mother of Humanity is African Women*** she is GOD we Black women are the Beginning and the End.
God is a myth, but whatever works for you
This is why I want to live in New Orleans!
little girl doing her homework.little boy practicing his flute. Mama singin and playin her heart out. Beautiful. The band so laid back and humble. New appreciation for the clarinet.
Ah New Orleans! Your jazz music is just everything.
That´s true.
This is so cool
I would die to see this irl
Cameron Whitten
I have. It's crazy, but her albums are so expensive XD
I used to live in NOLA, I would stand there in the French Quarter for hours listening to her. Always made my day. I miss it so much
Jonathan Bergeron I went to see Tool in late Jan of 16, weekend before Mardi Gras, beautiful weather, not too busy. I bet I watched her for three hours Saturday, and would have more Sunday but friends from the coast showed up. I lived in Biloxi for 27 years and did the things 18-25 year old guys do. I spent two nights there that weekend and had a blast, prolly moreso during the day. I want to go back and be a tourist now.
dude i did in new orleans and i got a video... it was lit
What an amazingly gifted and talented lady!
THIS is music, not the shit on the radio and all the garbage on all the so-called "awards shows."
My spirits have been lifted by this great jazz.
