I just did mine and the nut was crazy tight and the yoke was pure hell to get off the spline. I have seen other youtube videos where they do come off much easier, kind of like your. Though I counted threads when I took mine off, when I put it back together and went for a test ride, the rear hummed like mad. I ended up taking the whole pinion section out and replaced the bearings and races and crush washer. Then I setup the preload to 30 inch pounds and put it all back together. I did check the pattern with the yellow paint and it looked good. The diff sounds good now. This rear was a mess when I got it, it had about a pint of dope in it and a axle bearing was bad. But, after much cleaning and fluid changes..its good now.

Me personally would have talked about the crush sleeve and what if? I also would have added some RTV silicone on the splines of the yoke to keep gear lube from leaking through the splines. And last, a new pinion nut. But at least you used some low grade Loctite.. Next time, also try making sure your driving your seal evenly and get a better hammer.

You mark it to count the number of turns it takes to get off. Then you know exactly how many turns to tighten it to keep ur rear end play within spec

If you picked it up from Napa do you have a part number

I got it from napa but was months ago and don’t have the part number. Definitely take the old one into the store to make sure it matches

uh oh. There is a whole procedure for that, o.e.m manuals aren't that expensive, and thoroughly explain. That pinion nut is what is used to set the relation of the pinion gear to the ring gear, with a crush sleeve and shims. If not removed and replaced in exactly the same place, it will be too loose, or too tight. Trashing a rear end. There is supposed to be preload on that nut, measured with a beam torque wrench.

I appreciate that knowledge! I’ll look into all that!

The pinion nut definitely shouldn't have been that loose. Looksike it was an interference nut meaning it's a one time use, so someone probably was in the before and didn't replace it. Be sure to check hat periodically as a loose pinion nut can change your pinion depth significantly which can cause premature failure up to catastrophic failure.

I appreciate that advice! I’ll be sure to get a new nut for it and replace it asap

I did the pinion seal on my 12 bolt last weekend and mine was as loose as yours!
