Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series. Its historical timeframe precedes that of Assassin's Creed III (2012), though its modern-day sequences succeed III's own. Black Flag was first released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October 2013 and a month later for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It was released on the Nintendo Switch as part of Assassin's Creed: The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue in December 2019.
The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and describes the player as an Abstergo agent. The main story is set in the 18th century Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, and follows notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, grandfather and father of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton and antagonist Haytham Kenway, respectively, who stumbles upon the Assassin/Templar conflict. The attempted establishment of a Republic of Pirates utopia (free from either British or Spanish rule) is a significant plot element.
Unlike previous games, gameplay elements focus more on the ship-based exploration of the seamless open world map, while also retaining the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. Multiplayer also returns, albeit with only land-based modes and settings. The game's setting spans the West Indies with the three main cities of Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, along with numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. Players have the option to harpoon large sea animals and hunt land animals. For the first time in the series, naval exploration is a major part of an Assassin's Creed game, where Edward Kenway captains the Jackdaw, a brig he captures from a Spanish fleet in an early game mission.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag received critical acclaim and was one of the best-selling games of 2013, with over 15 million copies sold as of 2020. Critics praised the massive open world gameplay, numerous side-quests, graphics, and improved naval combat. The light-hearted pirate theme and engaging story were well received by critics. The modern-day story, however, received a slightly more mixed response, while criticism fell on aspects of the historical story missions which were considered repetitive. The game received several awards and nominations, including winning the Spike VGX 2013 award for Best Action Adventure Game. It was followed by Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Rogue in November 2014.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is an action-adventure, stealth game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. The game features three main cities; Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, which reside under Spanish, British, and pirate influence, respectively.[9]

my favorite is Assassins creed 2
Loved seeing the fantasy footballers in that Opera GX ad! I see Jayvee too is a man of taste 🧐
I get what you mean in this video jayvee. I love this game too. But my number one favorite game is AC: Brotherhood. AC: Black Flag was number 2 until AC: Valhalla came out. Loved this video.
For me, the Ezio trilogy was my favourite, specially Brotherhood and Revelations
@@brokenbridge6316 glad you loved it!! And wow, that’s high praise for Valhalla! I’m just curious, what is it that makes you rank it so highly?
For a pirate of his time Edward had just the nicest white teeth
😁
knowing about Ubisoft, they could've made an ad about some toothpaste brand
Yeah... I tried to play Black Flag and that was the first jarring thing to me was how insanely white his teeth were. First 3 hours of the game were boring so I just gave it a quit. Maybe I'll try again later
EDIT: I didn't stop playing because of the teeth folks, I stopped playing because the start of the game was too boring. Relax.
@@big_narc when you get to Nassau things will start to get more interesting, trust me, black flag is an amazing game

Black Flag is one of those games you wish you could play again with no memory. I've played it a few times and I still LOVE sailing with the Jackdaw. But it makes me sad that I'll never feel the same emotions I had when I sank my first warship and sailed away whilst me crew sang these wonderful shanties. It made me feel like I am the captain of a pirate ship for real
It’s sad that it got boring after my 5th gameplay

I’m about to do that...haven’t played it in years forgot almost everything except there is a fat friendly guy that sells sugar and stuff like that...I remember I had a lot of fun playing it but forgot about the story and the gameplay
The end scene when anne bonny sings and you see all those lost makes me tear up every time! Sailing along listening to sea shantys brings me pure joy. Unbeatable in the AC series
When his daughter shows up 🥺
@@RestInValhalla And that smile that just shines from Edward the moment he sees her face. He is looking at the most beautiful treasure he will ever see.
@DasTemplar 96 Yea is an incredibly touching moment. Just reading that notification almost made me tear up lol
I just completed the main campaign in Valhalla today. It was great, but emotionally, it wasn't on par with the depth of Black Flag.
The Viking in me loved it, the soft boy in me wanted Black Flag levels of storytelling
Lmao u cry???

I still really wish Edward got a sequel.
Hell no, imagine how today's ubisoft would fuck it up.
@New Alfa i feel your pain, but maybe some things need to be left alone. better to cherish the legendary memory, than to live a tainted experience.
Why not try Assassin's creed Rogue?
Would not buy enjoyed all the pirate bit but the whole assassin's creed bit was weak as fuck
His story was complete tbh
I've swum across the entire map in Assassin's Creed Black Flag. It took me 4 hours and 51 minutes.

@@stephendowle4266 Really? So I could've done the whole journey in 4 minutes and 51 seconds?!!
@@stephendowle4266 Edward would pistol whip you for calling them boats.
The ship combat in this game is still unbeaten today.
The way you could unlock more and stronger guns, giving you more options as you level up in terms of fighting is amazing.
And the aiming with the cannons while sailing feels so nice, i gotta play this game again.
Yeah and it says something about the naval combat in games, if this is the best
@@tj-co9go That's true this game's combat is super fun but there isn't much to it. I guess a lot of games just don't call for naval combat.
I finally finished black flag yesterday and I teared up at Edward's beautiful character arc. His line of "For years I've been rushing around, taking whatever I fancied, not giving a tinker's curse for those I hurt. Yet here I am... with riches and reputation, feeling no wiser than when I left home. Yet when I turn around, and look at the course I've run... there's not a man or woman that I love left standing beside me." Was such a beautiful line
Best line in the whole game.
At the end, when Anne Bonny starts to sing The Parting Glass, and Edward sees all his dead mates...brings a tear to the eye everytime.
Playing the game was like watching a movie. After all the time I had spent playing it to get to the end, this was a bittersweet moment. I haven't played BF since 2014.
@Felix Butterfield I'm playing Valhalla right now. I haven't played an AC game since BF. Valhalla is too much an rpg, and takes away from the fun. So far there isn't much assassination to it. I'm pretty old, and not much time for games anymore, but I might revisit BF. It was the best of them to me.
@Felix Butterfield I'm only in it for less than 20 hours right now. I might make it to 21.
yup one the most memoriable moments of gaming for me, even just hearing that song gets me everytime it plays
Fucking cried when Mary died
I missed when we had actually animated cutscenes and lip-syncing was never a problem.
Mo cap, baby!
Yeah, ik. I love the new games especially origins and valhalla but that is reaaaly fkin annoying
Cant argue with that
ME Andromeda facial animation level: Legendary
Or when they focused on immersion still and every AC game wasn’t just a bloated rpg with micro transactions... A Valhalla vs Unity comparison vid popped up on my recommend page, Unity was by far not the best AC game, but it’s really sad to see just how zoomed out everything is in comparison now, and how there aren’t really any crowds anymore, or special effects when you take a leap of faith, hell even just the way fabric moved seemed leaps and bounds beyond what we have now, and graphically.... all in a game released 7 years ago. Today’s AC can still be enjoyed, they aren’t all complete trash, but it’s sad to see what things have become
It's also my favourite AC game. And as a Portuguese myself, it was incredibly refreshing to not only SEE the Portuguese Empire (the longest lasting European Empire btw) represented in the game but to HEAR the NPCs speaking my mother language in proper Portuguese and NOT in Brazilian as it often happens.
I would really love a careful remaster of this game to the new gen consoles.
The closest we have for now is the rebel collection on the switch
The colony has surpassed the colonizer it seems haha
How do you colonize a land then get mad about “proper” Portuguese, 😂 if you wanted it to be kept pure maybe you should’ve stayed on the Iberian peninsula
I’m not Portuguese but I do recognize and know some history of it and the different accents and was also surprised when I heard European Portuguese instead of Brazilian good job Ubisoft
I personally really liked the little puzzles for hacking the computers in Abstergo, and it felt kind of cool to know that all the games are connected with little details like the reason you have to repair/calibrate computers in rogue is because you hacked them in black flag
“Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag is my favorite of them all.” Yep, enough said! There’s so much to like about this game. I’ve played them all, most all of them multiple times. And Black Flag, for me, is still the best of them all.

Playing all the games from valhalla to the first and this one is the best!

Black Flag was the only game that I finished 100%, I enjoyed it so much, was so tropical so nice to play, a lot of things and side quests to do.
Edward's story is crazy good. In his quest for fortune he loses all the things that really mattered.
I finally played Black Flag for the first time this year and was amazed that a game from 2013 still holds up so well in 2021. The water, the foliage, the lighting, the sound design. And that's not even including how it managed to mix the free running assassin stuff and ship-to-ship combat so seamlessly. I FELT like a pirate exploring a tropical paradise during the golden age of piracy. No game has done sailing better. When you catch the wind just right and your ship rises over a swell as the crew breaks into song? Perfect.
Absolutely. The ship battles are so epic, I could not believe they are from 2013!
And the thunderstorms were brilliant.

AC 4 Black flag is one of those games, where I can barely wait at work to finish off, and get lost in the awesome game world. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe it's the setting? I dunno
What makes Black Flag's setting special was the use of negative space with the oceans. It felt alive and dynamic and it allowed for all the locations on the sea to feel unique so it never felt like we were going to the same place twice. I feel that is something that is lost in the new AC games.
It's the entire game, not just the setting. This game has what no other AC has or probably will ever have judging where Ubisoft is going. I mean the sea battles of this game is better than some new games, let alone the rest of the content, amazing story, the NPCs, the setting and everything else lol. The only bad thing about this game is that they could have remastered it or even remade it with the OG crew just to bring the graphics up to date. It would have been better than AC3 remaster imo
@@justjoe5373 yeah problem is that ubisoft doesn't care a out the best remaster their only goal with those is that you can play em on the new platform
so with ac3r out every ac game but the first one is playable on ps4/xone gen (and should be on ps5 but there is a bug with syndicate) so I think maybe they'll Release a syndicate patch for ps5 and a AC1 remaster in 2 years and then they won't care about the old games anymore
It was the variety of things to do. The story, assassin contracts, naval contracts, treasure maps, creed stories, fort battles, hunting, smuggler caves... not to mention the ship battle economy. The locations are also super varied. Villages and underwater areas and caves and cities (3different ones) and the open sea. It wasn’t bloated like odyssey though. You always had something cool to do.
The setting is certainly part of it :-)
Something most people might not appreciate when playing black flag is the historical accuracy.
Ubi always deliver on history, but with this era they had so much to pick from. Almost all the supporting cast are real, historically recorded pirates.
"A merry life and a short one" Is a real quote from Black Bart, as are many other quotes from other characters.
It's the ultimate pirate fantasy ever.
As a stand alone story, I would say it is the best game in the series. Edward’s arc, is really well written and well thought out. Also Ralph Ineson’s voice. Ralph Ineson is really just a fantastic actor.
fun fact: torres in real history was a pretty good guy, building orphanages for the kids left behind, hospitals for the sick and an alround stand up guy.
ubisoft wrote the story of torres well
Torres is also a good guy in AC4. It would be better to call him an antagonist, rather than a villain. He doesn't lie. He opposes, not just dislikes but opposes slavery and encourages his Templar subordinates to also move away from it. He believes what he is doing for the good of mankind and, to borrow a phrase from the man himself, "wears his convictions well".
Like Haytham, I consider Torres to be a shining example of what the Templar Order truly stands for. He doesn't seek control for power's sake. He genuinely believes in the "new order" the Templars are trying to bring about, and believes that controlling humanity will be the best way to ensure their peace and happiness.
@@onesaucdragon Still, that is the excuse of tyrants every time. Salvation for the human race. Great villains though
@@onesaucdragon isnt it ironic how he seemed to be against slavery yet he wanted to control humanity through artifacts
Well, he was also accused of corruption so I ain't too sure about that.
But still, he is a pretty well written character, not a one sided antagonist and not a flat boring one.
I'm a simple man. Whenever I see a video praising AC: Black Flag I instantly click the video! Great work, by the way, such an intriguing game on so many levels!
Hahaha well said! Thanks so much, I'm really happy you enjoyed :) It is such a gem
@@brantwilliams8173 he just said in the vid
I just loved the variation in missions and islands. The traveling feels the absolute smoothest where it doesn’t feel even on slow sailing that you’re mindlessly going forward. I actually totally forgot about the story until I had most of the map complete and islands explored, which is the one area I wish there was more
At 30:30 Hey, I just want you to know...In real life, because most bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, the order is actually the bullet hitting, then the sound of the gunshot catching up. So it isn't bizarre that you see the bullet fly yet hear it afterward. Actually, that is more accurate.
Just to be that annoying guy… most weapons (especially pistols) back then would have worked differently and been slower than sound. Good point though!
I got emotional playing the game when you see everyone that died sitting at the table, and it happened again when i saw the clip in this video. kinda shows how much i really loved this game

One of my all time favs. Not just in Assassins Creed but videogames in gereral. Edward holds a special place in my heart.
I've played it numerous times and still get a little tear eyed when he talks with his daughter on the ship. Her asking if theyll see any pirates, and him saying there are no more pirates.😭

The thing that I noticed and appreciated from Black Flag story is that it has that light Red Dead Redemption coming of an era type of story. No more outlaws, no more pirates, all gone and replaced by an orderly society and a more civilized one. The main characters also have the time to redeem themselves and right the mistakes they did.
The graphics seemed so ahead of its time. The story was phenomenal as well. I was also iffy not having Desmond.

@@natoklord That's the thing, they like it. I hated it in every game like poison. To me minimizing it only made it better. Not one trailer is about today's time. Black Flag was my first Assassins creed game I ever played and is still my favorite
Me too
I was ok until 19:05 and that song made me teary and made me remember how good this game was, great video btw
That's the thing about this series, it was never marketed as the assassin's fantasy but moreso the pirate fantasy and it works because of how well the game actually mixes both into edward, him having the combat capabilities of a pirate while having the stealth and agility of an assassin is blended together so well that they compliment each other.
Edward at the start: money money money money
Edward at the end: I'm a dumbass, I was wrong now I will do everything to make it right
Scrub in the comment section: Let me spoil the game for those who haven't played it
@@vision821k4 Complete dumbass in the comment section: I hope people don't get spoiled from the comments section on a full video review of the game.
So basically Arthur Morgan but a pirate. Cool!
@@sirwaylonthe1st239 well yes, but actually no.
@@godzillas_tail ah, I see now.
just remembering the ending scene, where his young daughter ask him about pirates on sea gives me chills
This bring backs memory and reminds me of the hole that the new Assassin's creed games never filled. Love this game.. this got me through difficult times, i loved and enjoyed it soooo very much. Would love to see a remastered version of the game or they make a sequel and show his story as an assassin and become a master assasin in England and all over. ❤️❤️💪🏻💪🏻
My favorite quote from blackbeard is: "if a man plays a fool, then it's only fools he'll persuade. But appear to be the devil, then all men will submit."
Can you imagine, black flag remade with the new engines?
Keep the story, characters etc. But a whole new fully immersive world.
Unfortunately I feel it would be too much work and Ubisoft has reached insane levels of greed these days. It's not about making a genuinely amazing game anymore.
All about the $ and the $ alone anymore. Gone is the passion.
Yes. And imagine if they sured up the sword fighting a bit and made it so where a stowed sword doesn't just float along side the character. Also I'd love the choice to just use one sword over two (without having to pick up an enemy's sword, that is). A remake of this game would have me opening my wallet for this game yet again
@@TheForbiddenOne55 I dont know, I thought the fighting was rather on point (pun intended). Bad the random instances where you stab the button and nothing happens. But that seems to be an AC trend throughout.
The limits of map size to me was one of the worst factors of older games, and much improved in the most recent few where you can just dock anywhere and hop off (I never liked the jungle runs, just not natural or engaging). I think this would be where the story would struggle to work though.
I remember trying to take out that huge ship. It was a huge mistake.
Haha, me too. Will try again in 2 weeks ;-)
@@maltimoto i fucked 3 man o wars together without fully upgraded jackdaw. They had me almost. But i still won i got shot from every direction with 3 man o wars 😂
My favorite memory of playing Black Flag was playing it on Halloween night and kids were trick or treating. This one kid was with his mom and after giving the kid candy, he shouts to his mom. “He’s playing Assassins Creed!” After I closed the door. Hope that kid is having a great life.
That profound impact and those happy tears are why i fell in love with anime.
This game could use a remake to look as good as Skull and Bones and seamless transitions sailing into cities would be an amazing game. A crouch button and combat like Ghost of Tsushima might be nice too.
It would be cool of we were able to explore more of the islands. Imaging having all of Cuba to explore.
Yes, pretty much completely agree, though I do like black flags combat due to it’s fun and almost arcadey feel
Why would you want a remake when you can get a sequel?
Atleast a 60 fps patch would be great
Stop advocating remakes. They will be the downfall of gaming, remakes and monetisations
That ending with “the parting glass” literally gave me chills and I teared up seeing all the characters that died
I really liked your critique. The storyline and dialogue of this game are simply amazing. I will always remember the hours I spent playing it and the joy it brought to me.
So I started playing AC Black flag some days ago. My first time ever but I always wanted to. The whole thing reminds me of old movies and how fun they used to be.
Matt Ryan is such a great actor, he doesn't get enough credit.
Agreed, such a brilliant performance. I especially loved the performance of Matt Ryan after Mary Read's death. He really did an amazing job at portraying a broken man trying to rebuild himself into a man of principle
the Kenway family needed an entire trilogy
Bro The Kenway family HAD a triology
@@raes704 more of a duology right? Since they only make an appearance in AC3 and AC4
@@cajunseasoning1846 Well yes, but their era has a triology, and events of Rogue are a result of Black Flag, and at te same time they make possible the events of lll
You know they get one already AC 3, Black Flag and Rogue
@@smoker5989 Rogue doesn’t focus on a Kenway. Haytham is just a side character in it
Gosh, its 37 mins and I never realised until you said thanks for making it to the end.
Man... Hearing the theme song after all these years really brings me back
If there is something I would say that I really love about Black Flag's story, is that it basically slaps the fantasy stereotype of pirates after treasure and that jazz. A new perspective and understanding of the Creed that could only be viewed if you are someone like Edward, and what happens if you misunderstand it. It's all different, and it remains at that high note.
I love taking out forts and then engaging in battle inside the fort. It’s so cool when I’m running by massive amounts of people clashing with explosions happening all around me
Games are becoming more and more scripted. I understand the more you script a game, the more detail the game can have, but even I can tell older games were something else.
I'm getting so emotional just from the soundtrack in intro. BEST AC GAME PERIOD
When he meets his daughter at end of the game, that moment always gives me a goosebumps cuz deep inside I know how Edward feels when he saw his daughter after so many years......and thought, what he becomes now .....A real man!!!......This is not just a good Game nay undoubtedly The legacy of a Man who came for a found the fortune but instead found himself. Truly Masterpiece 💜🖤💙
This has always been my favorite due to story and just being able to be a pirate. I listen to the shanties through iTunes. If I have a bad day, I listen to the shanties to cheer me up. 😅
I have never understood how people enjoy the shanties. I hated them always kept the song muted. I mean it’s not a bad thing but we’ll just can’t understand how people find them fun
@@ahmedsachwani2868 Wish I could explain it. Lol. It might have something to do with my enjoyment of the time period. I also enjoy Celtic style music as well. There is a small local band I listen to with this style. There is even a pirate metal band I enjoy!
@@FreeSamples4U I listen to some cleric music sometimes I just sit close my eyes and just listen to ac sings but the shanties never made sense to me

Still the best pirate game ever made. Sea of Thieves doesn’t come close.
Skull of bones

Honestly if this game had multiplayer and the same concept as sea of thieves it would be 10x more replayable
Eeeh they are different kinds of games

@@asdasdasd9320 better yet l4d compared to back for blood
Your assassins creed videos are so good man
Appreciate you for the vid glad to see alot of pple share my opinions with black flag in loving it
I remember being high as crap off sleeping pills while doing the diving parts, that was easily the funest parts of the game for me.
It's funny, I think I've played this game four times in the almost 6 years that I've had it... And even though I know it's coming, that "Parting Glass" scene still hits me like a punch in the gut.
Also, I think this is the only AC game where I found myself cycling back to the original outfit. I don't know, there's just something about Duncan's robes that they just got so right.
Yeah I liked his too but I liked the upgraded one when he becomes a slave
@@shadrickwilliams2842 the armored look of it 😫
I think when people call it “a good pirate game but not a good Assassin’s game” they’re vastly overlooking how good of a story the game has.
No, you aren’t playing as someone in the brotherhood, but you are playing as someone important who’s stuck between the two sides of the major conflict. We get a good look at both, and how Edward’s journey leads him to one over the other. It’s arguably an even more pure Assassin’s game because we’re getting an outsiders view.
Everything second of this video hits the feels. Thank you
Thank you for feeling with me 🙏
You have no idea how I'm missing the characters of black flag like they are real people after playing the game, and I know playing it again won't make me feel any better.
Having authentic voice actors makes a world of difference to me, especially accents from the British Isles that I’m familiar with. Valhalla’s voice acting is really patchy, and having a U.S actor doing a British regional accent is always going to demolish the immersion for me
Just finished this. I played AC 1-3 about a decade ago. This was different AC, but a lot of fun. I loved it so much, I put about 90 hours on it. I have a few hidden treasures to find, and a legendary ship battle to do, but everything else was done. Not many games make me do that.
Playing Rogue now. I love it just as much for different reasons. Flame on.
I remember when I first played Black Flag, I felt like I was playing AC - but different. Loved it.
Also, the fact that I too am Swansea born and bred makes me love this game even more.
That lecture you did about Torres speach is great, never thought about it, thanks man, amazing video
Thanks dude! Really happy you enjoyed it :) Torres is one of example of so many well written characters in this game
I play it when I just was a kid and now, many years later i finally understand the story. thank you so much!
Just watching the trailers back then hyped me up to go thru them again as a kid. Now that I'm older, it's about getting a ps3 again and all those gems of games cause their dirt cheap now and just going thru them again...nostalgic as ever.
I remember watching the trailer for black flag and just thinking of how perfect it seemed, the setting, the character design, all of it. I really hope we get to see a remastered version at some point
Man I really really related to Black Flag so much I've been playing that game 16 times over again I've been loving it I can't wait for they going to remaster it like one thing I love the story line I love how he is Passion an arrogant but become a master at the ending and knowing what is wrong and right
I was going to replay this again soon, and watching this got me super excited to jump into it again. It easily has one of the best narratives in the series. Edward’s arc is an unforgettable one. I remember the first time I played the game I didn’t pay much attention to the story, and it felt unfocused, but on a second play-through, everything clicked for me and I was blown away.
Man finding blueprints and upgrading your ship in this game was a treat 👌
