Awesome Documentary!!! What’s funny is these rappers using gangsters names knowing they have no gangster in them and that they disrespect the real ones!

Inmate #132 is Charles Berta, the last inmate to be thrown into the underground dungeons (first used by the army then by Warden Johnston until 1939). After a brawl with several guards, he got overpowered by Associate Warden Miller, (who had him thrown down the stairs toward the basement) then thrown into a cell and finally Miller grabbed his handcuffs and locked him to the bars then left him chained up for 8 hours. The next day Warden Johnston decided to stop using the dungeons so he had the structure dismantled (guard Clifford Fish was the one who got the order by the Warden). Berta was then taken to a segregation cell and by the time he returned to the general population, he changed his ways and stayed out of trouble.

It was a very unique prison. Just the like titanic was labeled unsinkable, Alcatraz was labeled unescapable. The worst of the worst and those known for escape attempts served time there. It's a big part of history.

Just finished watching Escape from Alcatrz after my visit to the island. I found this to be absolutely fascinating!
But i don't think it should be torn down. It is History and it should remain. this is a reason why there is SO little to no history in the US unlike any other country, especially Canada (what a night and day). We have very little appreciationg in the US for history and culture :(

@typhon3808 You could make a prision 100% escape proof, but economics and politics of it all would make it unfeasible. Most of the maximum security escapes I've heard about have nearly always involved outside help..

does anybody have any information on this documentary, like who directed it, who produced it, when it was released etc. I'm hoping to use it as a source for my history project but can't without more info, thanks

I thought Joe Bowers was the first escape attempt. He was shot and killed while climbing a barbed wired fence.

This is a good documentary, and your right about Joe Bowers being the first escape attempt. I don't know why they said Cole and Roe were first either but in more recent times the Bowers escape attempt by some people was that it was actually a suicide on Bowers part. He had supposedly past mental issues and escaped right underneath a guard tower and was told several times to stop before the officer shot him and he fell to his death. I have had a lifelong interest in the place and been a volunteer out there for 14yrs , The Leo J. Ryan archives building in South San Francisco are were the inmate files are kept now and that is were the bulk of my information comes from.
