I grew up in the Philippines for 25 yrs and now in the US my grandma and I garden every weekend. We have hundreds of orchids ( Lady Dancing orchid, phalaenopsis and more) and we used charcoal and coconut husk.we have them in the tree bark and pots.we collected rain water and we never fertilize and we never worry about the crown getting water because it will dry up. Our orchids blooms non stop.. Now here in the US so far i have 3 orchids 2 died and 1 is surviving with new leaf growing ( excited).Miss the warm weather winter is not my favorite.
I am starting to consider orchid plants in my collections, this video gave me a detailed information on how I can take care of them properly. Thanks for sharing!
Wow I'm happy and proud to know that lots of phalaenopsis come from my home country Phillippines. I'm so happy to discover your channel very informative my lovely lady you are amazing. Got more than a hundred of phalaenopsis so I have to learn more each day
@Barbara - Please tell me you were being sarcastic? PLEASE! 'This Old House' is supposed to be trusted. THIS was scary. Because, with _this_ video... they completely dropped the ball. Been growing/propagating orchids of many varieties, for over 12 years.
If anyone is reading this the woman, Betty Lopez Eber, passed away in 2017:( I have met her in person and she is a beautiful and genuine soul. Rest In Peace
I have a Phalaenopsis that bloomed for 14 month , and I never watered like on the video, all I did was tut 3 cubes of ice like the seller recommended ,I sprayed once a week and kept it on the window sill with 3 hrs of direct morning sun(Connecticut),it is resting now...And about the rebloom cut,I red that you have to cut above the second knee,so I did for my other one and within 2 month it gave me a beautiful flowers...
if your environment is wet and cold.... moss is not a good media for Phals.... when moss absorbs full water.. takes weeks to dry out and easily rot the roots if you are not careful. but for a warm environment moss is good.
@Laura Larios - Hi Laura. I'm Hunny. I _just_ found your post. Personally, I have been growing Phals. for 12 years. Yet, I am _still_ learning & sharing my knowledge. I grow & propagate 'Flaming Katy's' as well as, many other types of plants for well over 27 years now. Typing that made me feel old. So, thanks. HaHaHaHa. We love our orchids. The RUclips comment section of most orchid videos is nice & filled with _real people_ trying to help each other out. Please, for any future orchid knowledge listen to my favorite RUclips teacher. 'Orchid Whisperer' If you are still interested in fertilization & more? She is my go to 'RUclipsr': #1 'Orchid Whisperer' She grows in the 3 main types of media, bark, moss & water culture. She is my favorite! She actually has real recipe cards with her fertilizations on them for herself. That she shares, with her viewers. She has Spring/Summer & Fall/Winter regimens that she's perfected & updated over the years. She lets you know the different things you could do during the blooming cycle of your orchids. To keep them in flower ALL the time! She is straight to the point. She has hundreds of orchids all over her house. (I am just a simple viewer, I don't know her or get anything for sending you to her channel.) She _has_ helped me saved several of _my_ orchids over the years. However, sometimes she doesn't have the exact answers you need. So, the others I swear by are as follows: - Roger's Orchids (he has his own homemade greenhouse, grows in bark & know artificial lighting. This man _knows_ his stuff. He posts all the time & answers questions.), - Samantha's Orchids (She purchases sick/discount orchids from the store & saves them, using water culture method. It really does work! She's not posting new videos much. But, she does answer questions.) - EdenMakers (she has her own TV show, on real TV. She knows her stuff & answer questions too.), - Michael's Orchids (he grows _all_ of his plants in semi hydroponic, he _can_ talk a bit too much about stuff you don't care about. A lot of time his videos are longer than they ever _need_ to be. But, just fast forward him 😁 . He does lots of things differently, it's interesting & you _will_ learn some crazy stuff.) I am really sorry, that this post was so long & that in took 2 years after _you_ first posted it for anyone to respond. If any of the information is helpful to you, a family member, a friend or a neighbour. It was worth the time it took me to write it. Please, Have a wonderful day. Happy growing. Your new growing friend Digitalhunny. *Hugz from this Canadian gal 🤗🍁 VENT: This is the _worst_ Phalaenopsis orchid video, I have seen in a long while. Especially, because, "This Old House" are TRUSTED! They completely dropped the ball on this one. Possibly killing a few orchids along the way t making this monstrosity video.
Sorry but you are mistaken. You could have gone to El Yunke, Puerto Rico It is the only tropical forest in the United States National Forest System. You could have gone there and experience orchid life at its finest.
There's a huge difference between a place having a rainforest exhibit and being a legit rainforest. Also, even if it were a real rainforest, that isn't the only one in the continental 48. We also have the Appalachian and the Pacific Northwest Rainforests.
Yes I cringed. Not just crown but stem rot. They are very sensitive to it some more than others. I have mine in no media and only water to soak then drain yet lost one to stem rot. The others are okay.
This is not either wrong or right, shes growing it on the space where ventilation and temperature is excellent, so in a couple of hours the water will soon evaporate , she did not mention to avoid watering from the top and especially don't water the crown in apartment or inside the house where orchid environment is partially acceptable
Its depending on the temperature, if your home is warm and dry during winter, yes you shoul, but let the media dry completely between watering, this is because roots need to dry out sometimes before being in contact with water again. They easily die by overwater rather than underwatering it.
If it's a Phalaenopsis orchid - like in this video - yes. The easiest thing to do is to buy an orchid potting mix from your local garden center. Alternatively you could get some tree bark that you may already have around the house and sterilize it. Not sure how to sterilize the bark properly, so i'd do a quick Google search if I were you :)
i mean.... in real life, orchids get rainwater and wet crown is a normal situation, but the thing is you see all her orchids are outside, so they dry quickly with natural ventilations. so, its not a big concern.
@Leonard Wenk - You are correct. Unless, you are me 😊 . Personally, I only use a light misting in the evenings. Because, I happen to live in an extremely dry house, during these Canadian winters. ALSO, only do this _if_ you know what you are doing. Having over 10 years experience & _knowing_ your Phals! 🤗🍁 'This Old House' has dropped the ball on this one. Completely! This was cringy all the way through. *sigh
Leonard Wenk nothing happens if you water the the leaves the only place you need to be careful with is the crown because if you leave the water in the crown the orchid will rot👍
I'm confused. You can't expose orchids to direct sunlight, but then someone said the roots need sunshine....how the heck do you expose the roots to sunshine without exposing your orchid plant to sunlight?
I didn't catch where they said that the roots need sunshine but they don't (orchid roots can photosynthesize, but the leaves do most of the work). What is important in terms of light is that the orchid gets a lot of diffuse but not direct sunlight, which will burn the plant. Sunburned orchid leaves have patches of light green, yellow or black where the sunlight hit them the hardest. This will cause the leaf to fall off eventually. If you are keeping your orchids on your window sill and you notice the plant getting sunburned, you can move it a few inches away from the window or use some kind of barrier like a sheer curtain to diffuse the sunlight falling on your orchids.
Fertilizing the day after it has been watered hasn't been necessary or even good since the invention of synthetic fertilizer. That rule was from about 200 years ago when they threw chicken poop in a bucket for fertilizer. There was no measuring and growers used to burn their roots. An orchid root that has already been saturated can't take up any fertilizer. That is all in the book Florida Orchid Growing by Dr. Martin Motes. As respected by the Florida orchid community as he is and as much of a presence that Martin Motes has at Fairchild, I can't believe that woman hasn't read his book.

Thank you for the video, what kind of fertilizing could I use for orchid ?

lol who else went crazy when did not dry the crown
I figure there's rlly good air circulation where they are but was def waiting for them to mention to avoid that if growing indoors!
Chris Roberts t,he rain man
OMG I can't believe she didn't stop him! All I could think of was, well toss that one soon from crown rot!

Very knowledgeable but I also want to learn how to grow orchids from temperate area such as Cymbidium kanran.
What if you cut off the flower spike all the way off??
is the orchid will still grow if its only a branch of a flower?
do you still need to water the orchids if you place in top of watered rocks?
+Cynthia Andrade yes. once a week.
the water on the rocks is to increase humidity.
Cynthia Andrade I was wondering the same thing. Good thing someone answered for usx

I cringed when I saw the guy pouring over the crown ...
Artemis El me to 😫😫😫

Do repot your orchids directly after shopping them, as this is the only way you can save them from root damage, bugs, rootrot etc....
What's the best thing to use for fungus on orchids
Girlie Hanooman hydrogen peroxide 3%
Girlie Hanooman you can find it on medical stores easily, very cheap and effective..
I like
awesome from Philippines
my orchid is growing in soil. should i transplant to something else?
If it's a Phalaenopsis orchid - like in this video - yes. The easiest thing to do is to buy an orchid potting mix from your local garden center. Alternatively you could get some tree bark that you may already have around the house and sterilize it. Not sure how to sterilize the bark properly, so i'd do a quick Google search if I were you :)
If it's a terrestrial orchid like a lady slipper orchid it needs a special soil not bark
Paul Bassen YES!!! Soil is not the adequate media for orchids do to that soil is kept to wet use bark
Can you say crown rot !!
Ellofez Yes major crown rot.
+Ellofez Hi
No one speaks on that word. Not here!
thks you so much,,
He watered the crown😩😫😔🙀
i mean.... in real life, orchids get rainwater and wet crown is a normal situation, but the thing is you see all her orchids are outside, so they dry quickly with natural ventilations. so, its not a big concern.
That phalenopsis thats been watered in the video it didn't have healthy roots!!!
DONT WATER ON THE LEAVES!!!
@Leonard Wenk - You are correct. Unless, you are me 😊 . Personally, I only use a light misting in the evenings. Because, I happen to live in an extremely dry house, during these Canadian winters. No fertilizer every week
They don't natrully get lots of nutrients
And they have growing periods
S EclipseStar most of them have growing periods
You cannot water in the Core
Auto correct I meant crown
CROWN ROT
wrong, the PNW has the actual only rainforest in the continental U.S. , check your facts dude.....
Only temperate, not tropical rainforests.

Didn't explain how to fertilize. also she didn't clean water off leaves
Bernadette Kennedy if you put water on the leaves nothing happens but you always need to dry the crown of the orchid
CONTINENT OF THE UNITED STATES WTH?
Lol I asked what not where
Wo
Trash, misleading about "convert a new orchid to water culture!", nothing about water culture.
What is this about cats weaving between plants? What is this madness? They are mortal enemies and always will be.
