My favourite performer and "looker" by far is the DJ models J94. Brilliant loco!
Uma beleza de locomotivas Jennifer
I'll make another recommendation for the J94, which other commenters have mentioned. Looks great, has a short wheelbase which is excellent for shunting and tight corners, and with 6 wheel pickup it's reliable even over my dodgy track. Silky smooth even at low speeds. That's what concerns me slightly about the 0-4-0 models - do you find them ok running slowly over points?
14xx I know it’s not really a shunter but I love it
The new model from DJ models does look quite nice. I keep meaning to get one.
great set of locos. The Dapol LSWR B4 0-4-0 is out now. it should be a good Small Steam Shunting Locomotive
Think about the blue tank engine named Thomas who first came to Sodor had to shunt coaches and other trains
Some interesting choices but, being a user of insulfrog points, I wouldn't trust anything with a very short wheelbase like the 0-4-0 locos you showed us, and the Pug in particular is pretty hopeless for slow running, despite being a delightful model. The ancient Terrier works well despite its age, and is geared for slow running. The Hornby Austerity/J94 is also well past its retooling date but again does a good job as a shunter. I know we have to wait for your diesel video, but my personal favourite is the Bachmann Class 03/04; not only is it a very well modelled loco, but it performs very well indeed. Thank you.
I couldn't comment just yet on the diesel shunter video, but certainly the Austerity tank and Jinties were close 6th and 7th.
great video,nice models for a small layout,best wishes,jenny.jpj
Thanks! You're welcome.
I found the inclusion of the USA tank as a "small " shunter a little surprising as it's similar in size to a Jinty, Hunslet austerity or a GWR pannier. I would have thought the Y1/3 Sentinel would have been a more suitable inclusion.
All of the others you mention were considered for inclusion!
For shunting I would of thought a Jinty would of been on a top 5 list..... some of the 0-6-0 class did both shunting and local service.
Brave soul. From U.S. I'll disagree. Since you ask, my list has locos with at least 4 axles. My sentiments run like yours--earlier ones carry the day.
The US market would have a whole different set of shunters in the list I guess! I don't actually have any eight wheel shunters with the closest to that being the 72xx Mikado tanks but they aren't really considered shunters.
I suppose the pug is somewhat an 'oldies but goldies' models, it's simply classic :)
It is a lovely model, though performance is not a patch on more recent models; it could do with much lower gearing.
Another engaging and informative review. Thanks, Jenny! I like the new intro music, too.
Thanks! You're welcome.
Good interesting vid and I much prefer the far shorter intro🤗👍
I like the look of Barclay a bit more but I saw on some YT revews opinion that the Pecket runs better: quieter and smoother on low speed. Why do you prefer Barclay? I am asking because I wont to buy one of the two. Regards, and thank you
Quieter? Yes. Smoother? Not really, they're about the same
