I was fast off the mark to get one of these, but even then only just managed to get the last one from Olivia's Trains. For some reason, Hornby had designated them as the only agent to fit sound and I wanted sound, even though I only run on DC. It still works on DC enough to up the experience of running. It is stunning and has real gravitas. I did notice a few detail painting errors and omissions, so have corrected them. These include painting the brass coloured pipework to copper, whilst leaving the brass cast items as brass. Some black pipes were also repainted to copper. The gloss black smokebox was given a coat of matt varnish. The wheel axles were painted steel silver including the front pony truck wheels, where i made a little application tool from one of those small dense Tamiya cotton bud things. Then a very light weathering of the underframe to emphasise the details including on the tender. Finally a slight rusting of the firebox. I think it looks really good. Shame we can't add photos to these comments.
I've now got their 2021 range Dublo Merchant Navy loco on order, as has a mate who was impressed by my Duchess.

As a separate comment based upon some others wish for new Dublo A4 locos. They already exist, well not as Hornby but as the superb Dapol Black Label A4 range (currently out of production). I very much reckon Hornby thought that if little Dapol can do diecast, then so can we. The Black Label A4s have, sound, lights and smoke as standard, which all work to a lesser degree on DC. This is what allerted me that sound works on DC, and now I'm hooked. The sound blows my mates Hornby TTS A4 into the weeds, because its a suburb sound file and speaker, and synchronised. The fan driven smoke is also synchronised to the sound, plus the smoke goes through the whistle when played. A real tour de force and the way ahead, which I'm sure Hornby noticed. However, Dapol need to be canvased to run another batch if you want one. Here is mine, though the smoke isn't at its best once I realised I should have used the full fat smoke oil, not the low odour stuff :

Hi Jenny, fine review, lovingly carried out. It is a splendid model. I too missed out, when I could have ordered one, but I have found one and purchased it, albeit at a hefty premium. Still, it will be worth it, if I actually get my hands on it. One comment; you expressed disappointment at the tender shell being molded plastic, but that was what Hornby did to keep this model as true to the 1948 model as possible. (See page 8 of the 2020 Hornby Catalogue).Cheers from Beautiful East Texas, John Gondol

Yipee :) Having been let down with my original pre-order I managed to find one still for sale in The Little Train Shop, Tasmania, Aus. and it arrived today. So it has already been all around the world, starting off in China, then shipped to Hornby in the UK, then sent to Australia only to be shipped back to the UK. It looks amazing and really is a very heavy loco, I can't wait to see it run. Dave

Jenny great video you really are an inspiration to us new modellers. With regard to limited edition locos I emailed Simon Koehler and had a right go. I wanted the rocket which I think had a 500 limit. It was sold out very quickly. I said to Simon I thought Hornby was in the market to make a profit and thought the rocket should have been 1500-2000. He did not agree so we left it that. I did manage to get a rocket not the limited edition but even the unlimited edition I understand is nearly sold out so think I was right to argue my case. So Mr Koerler be very careful not to lose Hornby dedicated fans by adopting a negative marketing structure.

    Thanks for this Jenny!
I'm surprised and delighted to discover the new "Dublo" Atholl is in metal! I'd assumed until now that it was just a limited edition of their plastic model in a fancy box for the centenary year. How I'd love one of these now I know the truth! Totally hypothetical of course as even if they were more easily available this is way too expensive for me unfortunately,
I totally agree with you about them doing more Hornby Dublo but would contend that they need to be diecast if they are to have any advantage over the regular range. Diecast locos have something no plastic moulded model can ever have. They have weight. Which probably explains why the gloss finish suits this so well as you noted. In an ancient Triang book from the early 60''s Terence Cuneo wrote an article explaining how to make Triang plastic models look heavy - this was, he contended, the secret to making a convincing model. There was a lovely colour plate of his example which was a Triang "Nellie" 0-4-0T and it looked amazing and... heavy! This Atholl needs no such subterfuge. It looks heavy because it is. You can sense that just by the way it sits on the track.
I'm sure there's a market for a modern premium Hornby Dublo range of diecast locos like these and have a sneaking suspicion that Hornby might be thinking so too. I find it difficult to believe they would invest the massive development costs this must have incurred to produce just 500 models. That would definitely not be good business sense.
We've been missing diecast since the old HD models disappeared with the demise of G&R Wrenn. Let's hope this is just the beginning and that within a few years we'll have access to three range levels of Hornby locomotives:
    - Railroad (entry level)
    - Hornby (standard high detailed plastic)
    - Hornby Dublo (premium diecast)
We shall see. In the meantime I'll still be running my old Dublo models. They might be much cruder than their modern equivalents but in terms of build quality and "feel" they still hold their own.
Well done Hornby and bring on the Dublo A4, 8F, Castle, Bullied Pacific, 4MT and N2! I'll start saving...
    All the best, Robin.

Australia is very much a backwater for HORNBY. Most of the catalogue is hard to get, especially accessories. I a finding that there is more disappointment in their Engines when considering price, with the majority not living up to expectations. Your reviews help to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

Thanks for posting so quickly, I am glad now Rails cancelled my order as I am not impressed. Like the guy in wheelchair from Little Britain says "I don't like it". The paint work is horrible and the detail not a patch on plastic. The coal load looks fake. What a relief for me. After a horrible month of being upset that I missed out from the Rails cancellation I will sleep tonight better. Glad you liked it though, seeing that you had the old Duchess/City class its a nice classic.

Hello Jenny, this looks a lovely version of the Atholl. I run classic Tri-ang, Hornby, Wrenn and Hornby Dublo DC but still like seeing the new state of the art products. I enjoyed your review and seeing this loco run on your layout. The only thing I find disconcerting is the fact they fix the rear pony these days. On anything other than gentle curves the strange sight of this solid rear overhanging the rails spoils the look of the model in my eyes. Apart from that a great model and looks stunning in diecast. Still going to stick with my old school DC running though, not ready to get digital yet. Best regards to you

Hi Jenny, At least Hornby took care to observe a severe Quality Control to make this 'exclusive model' ...almost 'perfect'. Wish they do so for ALL models they sell !! ...even if it would cost us a few £ more so to have 'perfect RTR' instead of Ready To Repair !
A 500 limited number is indeed another big mistake from Hornby ! Thanks for sharing.

A very nice piece of metal work. I know what you mean by it feeling and looking heavy, kinetic power impression. It would've been nice to see a tin top on the tender; considering the tin-plate station Hornby made recently; but the effect would possibly have been difficult to model the level of detail on the loco itself. Cheers for letting us see the locomotive in action, especially the enigmatic 000 Numbered Certificate. Hey-ho. Honesty pays in the end. I'd love one but again, I missed the run and couldn't afford it if I was offered one. A lovely model indeed. Cheers Jenny! Stay Safe and Keep Well now.

Hi Jenny, Another very informative video from you. Thank you.
I can relate so closely to the cardboard ‘repair’ box with the perforated label on the end.
Mine is the one used by Binns Road to return my Duchess of Atholl in April 1964, following conversion by Meccano Ltd to 2rail.
The original loco was supplied in it’s 1948 train set box with two LMS coaches, oval of 3rail track and the black controller!
She and the coaches are all still in service to-day and Im fortunate enough to have the HD 2rail versions of the 0-6-2T and 2-6-4T plus, just the other day, an 8F to keep her company, on shed.
All die cast bodied locos and still wonderful performers.
    Keep Safe and Well,
    Regards,
    Tony (T 🚂)

I have been lucky enough to receive my pre-order directly from Hornby. I can imagine the disappointment of the many people who missed the boat. Nevertheless, having opted to take the financial plunge and order this limited edition I would be a bit peeved if Hornby flooded the market at a later date. I am very pleased with the model although my layout hasn’t reached the stage that I can give it a good run. The only thing I need to sort out is the tender that derails at the slightest provocation especially if running tender first. It is very light so maybe a bit of extra weight will do the trick. I also had a point motor pin that protruded slight too far that caught on a low hung dangly bit underneath the tender. The only thing I intend to do to improve the model is replace the plastic coal with something more realistic.

Great review. I've fitted TTS and it is awesome!! Re your suggestion for a train set - a second edition as a train pack with 4 coaches (with lights fitted?) would be better - we don't need more track and another controller!! Also with a red and white slip case sleeve in true 2-rail colours and certificates numbered in Roman Numerals - thus one to run and one to display

Mine's in the post after The Railway Conductor suddenly appeared with two in stock the other day. I managed to get a Dapol black label A4 for cheap a while ago and the metal construction does add a certain something. If Hornby did a Duchess of Montrose set (like the one I destroyed as a kid) it could retail for about what people are paying for Atholl on eBay....

Managed to get hold of one. Superb detail, however, on unpacking the box I found that the right hand cab door and handrail were missing (fireman’s side) and there is an unsightly gap between the firebox and cab. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I have emailed Hornby accordingly and will await their reply. Other than these points, it is a lovely model. Excellently presented video.

They have everything there to do another production run and they will make a lot more money as surely the Moulds, jigs and tools are still there and later, bring out other Princesses. Come on Hornby pull your socks up and listen to your customers because as you well know when you have lost them it's much harder to get them back. Martin. (Thailand)

Good review but seems to me Hornby is catering for collectors rather than modellers, with limited edition, certificated runs that will no doubt end up on EBay at twice the price. Slightly weird seeing reviews of products very few will be able to buy, even if they had the money. I don’t see it as good business sense to limit production of something where demand clearly exceeds supply. If something sells make more of it is what Alan Sugar say. I’m sure local model shops would sell these if given more than an allocation of one.
Imagine if this were a review of the latest SLR camera but when you went to buy it you found it wasn’t available because they only made 500!
I have no issue paying high prices if the quality is there, and have paid a lot more for 16mm garden railway items that will last a lifetime, so disappointed to hear that some customers are still having quality control issues even with a limited edition top of the range Hornby model.

Glad you sourced one Jenny, I've yet to open mine! Super review, in your opinion is there a slight variation in shade on the livery between the diecast body and plastic tender? I'd imagine the paintwork on the body has more of a glossy sheen to it? Not sure whether to weather mine or not... (seems a shame almost, but double funnel places this version of the loco in wartime)

AKA David Baker - Another excellent review Jenny and I can't wait to get mine as I think I've found one :) I have been searching for several weeks, since I was told my original January pre-order could not be fulfilled and last week I found a store in Tasmania called The Little Train Shop that was still accepting pre-orders with an expected in-stock date of this week ending 6th Sept 2020 and I have just received my dispatch confirmation from them, so it is hopefully now winging its way back to the UK all the way from Aus. I think I got the last one though as the next day it was showing as sold out. So the question is, do I risk buying a TTS Decoder for it now, or play safe and wait for it to actually arrive ???

Great and informative review. Sadly loco seems more a hybrid than a genuine Hornby Dublo. Plastic tender, where’s the superb linear 1960s ring field motor in the loco body? Plastic boxing insert instead of yellow card, gloss blue box different to plain paper finish of proper HD boxing. Looks a superb loco, just not the original Dublo dicast model. Lacks nostalgia for me sadly otherwise would have bought one.

I thought the Heljan Garratt was expensive at £250, but this getting close to extortionate. They should have made 1000 and charged about £225 due to the diecast body and flashy packaging. Great review and I applaud Hornby for getting you the model and you been honest and giving them the certificate back. PS at the price that thing cost, you should really have gone the full TTS route.
