      When you have more than 1k payload of bombs, which is what the mission needs in a small time frame like this, you sacrifice speed. In this type of mission I choose bombers over a ywing that only have a payload of 10 any day
      Why are we nitpicking stuff like this in star wars? You know what other design looks old? Every ship after the the prequel's timeline. You know what design looks illogical? Millennium Falcon, deathstar.
      You know what goes down in space for no reason in the past movies yet no one complained? A star destroyer after being defeated.
      What's my point? SHUT UP AND STOP PRETENDING THIS IS A BIG DEAL!

      And it used "gravity bombs"
      It's a knockoff shittier space version of a B-17 bomber with no onboard defenses.

    It wasn’t Poe’s fault that all the bombers were taken out. It was the resistance’s fault for picking bombers that moved slow as fucking slugs instead of the far more agile Y-Wings. I'm like fairly certain spacing is important even in a real life military scenario. You don't want to give the enemy a lot of chances to take out more than one of you if they have the chance to take something out. Also funny enough, we saw that happen in the movie why spacing is key.

    • @barrycabbageM34
      @barrycabbageM34 3 года назад +21

      Well if we look back to the last time bomber formations were ever really used on mass in aggression 1939-1945 you'll find that bombers usually flew in a close formation, mostly for overlapping fields of fire to mutually support each other in case of an attack on the formation.
      Plus the bombs within the bombers exploding violently is silly... especially in anything past semi-modern bombs that have reliable safeties that require the bomb to be armed before it would detonate even if it gets hit by a stray round or piece of shrapnel,
      then adding the reasonable assumption that in with all this fancy technology they have they'd of likely found even safer explosives to use in bombs.
      not really defending the movie... the scene was a load of shit and could have been so much better.

    • @popo0129
      @popo0129 3 года назад +4

      @@barrycabbageM34 Curious, wouldn't those bombers be guarded by other attack planes possibly surrounding them? Wouldn't make sense for those bombers to be alone especially if those are the planes that will do some real damage and are meant to blow up bases or sadly at times, cities.

    • @sebastianvergara8332
      @sebastianvergara8332 3 года назад +26

      @@popo0129 Bombers flew in formations because that way the would have more firepower against an enemy attack (a B-17 had 5 turrets, usually .50cals, so more bombers = more turrets, and more bombers in a tight formation can form a "wall" of bullets).
      Despite all that, most estrategic bomb runs were made with an escort of either P-51s or P-47s (American side that is) because enemy fighters and interceptors were a big threath even with 50 turrets to protect yourself. Also keep in mind that these bombings had especific targets, industry, cities, military zones, etc; and the aircaft aproached target at 5-6 km of altittude so that anti air artillery wouldn't be effective.
      In the scenario the movie gives (some enemy ships aproaching allies) it would have been more efective to load a fighter with ordinance, something the US did during ww2 with almost all of it's fighters.
      The situation the movie pressents is a military failure, I keep wondering why didn't the First Order just fire all the turrets they had at the slow and big ships that were aproaching them, it also makes no sense to send a ship clearly designed to be used in a controlled airspace in a head-up attack against not only a bigger fleet, but an enemy fleet that has variety such as fighters, interceptors and "anti-ship defenses"

    • @popo0129
      @popo0129 3 года назад +2

      @@sebastianvergara8332 Yeah that makes sense then. Never knew about the turrets bombers had, that seems like a pretty good solid defense against other planes attacking at least.
      Yeah this scene had huge problems for me because these bombers did really have nothing for defense like turrets or possibly stronger armor against enemy fire. Just seemed like a giant disaster to happen which, it did end up being. Kind of feels like the writers just watched some scenes of military operations and just threw in stuff to make it sound more tactical and aimed more for visuals than something more logical. I can't remember the scene very well but I feel like one tactic that could have been done was getting most of their shits to attack the front then maybe a small fleet including the bombers flank from another position to bomb them. Even then though, those bombers are super slow so it feels like a vehicle you should just scrap all together lol.

I think these bombers were definately impracticle, but if they were faster and combined with a larger fleet would be useful. You're listening to the wrong people. Those bombs fell whilst inside a gravitational field obviously generated by the ship. Now, you can't SEE this thing, so it looks like, there's just space RIGHT there OMG SHE's IN SPACEEE, THEY'RE SO STUPID HOW IS SHE ALIVE" She was at the bottom of the stairs, breathing normally etc. So there was obviously gravity inside that bay, Just because you couldn't see a force field to show where the gravity stops, what does that mean? Well, nothing. Look at the original movies, on multiple occasions in the original movies,m such as when palpatine arrives on the first death star, he lands in the hangar, and speaks to vadar, you can clearly see, that ship he was on flew through what appeared to be just a big wide open black entrance. With no masks on etc. Meaning what? Meaning that hangar was using some kind of force field that was generating gravity and air. But you can't see anything over that door can you?
      So obviously the same thing was happening here she was breathing and ok, so they'd obviusly thought we understoof that just because there's no Blue forcefield or something there, that obviousloy the ship, like other ships in the universe we've seen still have them, you just can't see them.
      So what does that mean aboput the bombs? Welp, if SHE could fall down really fast and KO herself, Then the bombs could fall right? as they were also in the ships fake gravity field it generated. So now it's easy, with the conservation of momentum theory, obviously, whatever speed those bombs were traveling when they left the gravity field of the ship, they would keep that exact same amount of speed for eternity if nothing was in the way. And thats the truth
      it's actually embarrassing how many people, i think it's like 95% who think that JUST because there's nothing to show that there's something generating gravity inside the bomb bay of that ship EVEN THOUGH there's a f*cking Ladder there for people to climb down, and manually drop bombs, they MUST be just in open space then??
      Again, Other ships in the original star wars films didn't show anything guarding doors out to black space
      And lastly. About the "ERRRR Her ship flew through snokes ship in lightspeed"""" That is SO retarded, why don't they make bombs with droids blah blah. Thats because these idiots ALL believe (because someone said it and they listened) that during lightspeed/hyperspace, the ship SOMEHOW goes out of existance, goes into some kind of wormhole or something, and then just appears on the other side., When we can clearly hear Han Saying in the first movie "Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?" .. so how do you fly THROUGH a Star, if you're not actually travelling in space but a wormhole, and why can you fly through a star and get killed, but not a ship? ffs

      @@Smerpyderp so why the hell would you design it to shoot 'down' instead of forward? You're in space, you have no benefit in 'dropping' them. A forward firing rail system has the advantage of range and greater penetration, as the projectile would continue to accelerate in null gravity (nothing is slowing it down), actually increasing it's effectiveness with range. And greater speed at point of impact equates to a greater release of potential energy, making them more effective
      a forward firing configuration would give you better manuverability, since you just have to point the nose of the bomber at the target for a few seconds to launch the payload... you wouldn't have to slowly fly over a potentially moving target that probably doesn't want to make your job easy....
      basically those bombers are designed to make life as difficult for their crews as possible, instead of taking advantage of the conditions of space combat to make themselves more effective. They're laughably slow and forced to get within suicide range to be of any use, however they're supposed to actually 'drop' their payload.
      'magnetism' is a really shit answer to the problem Rian's laziness created. Star Wars needs to start hiring some actual professional science fiction writers if it actually wants to patch these plot holes. This is really basic knowledge to anyone who's read hard scifi.

    The Clone Wars Era has always seemed more advanced than its successors. Both the Republic and Separatists were extremely innovative. And then there’s star killer base. Another Death Star that’s simply bigger. Oh boy, big surprise they were able to blow it up. It’s almost like I’ve seen that before, *twice*. well it is a technology purely for war we are talking about here. It's logical that during pretty much the biggest galactic-scale conflict in the history both sides would have an arms-race and try to come up with the most destructive and powerfull war machines and ships. Just look at Malevolance for example. Hell it was one of the main topics of discussion in the republic senate at that time if they should sacrifice more budget for the war or not. It's just more needed in times of war.
      During the Empire they didnt had to try anymore, they still did some cool shit from time to time but overall they mostly used the same technology they used in Clone Wars, if not worse ones to cheapen a mass prodcution. They didnt have to be creative anymore, The only real threats that were left to fight against were rebel cells that had very poor equipment and planets that are opposing the Imperial occupation. That's why pretty much all Clones seen Stormtroopers as inferior with their cheap armor, shit training that revolved around brain washing them into loyality and crappy blasters. Rex has no respect for them in Rebels, he even shows that despite being old he can take a fuckton of them without suffering a single scratch.
      As for New Republic era, they demilitarized themselves so it COULD explain why the bombers here might infact be really fucking outdated pieces of technology, but dont take my word for it im basically writing fanfiction here, i just assume that those two things might be closely connected to each other.
      All though if they are modern the holy fucking shit did Johnson even seen Clone Wars? Anakin Skywalker crashed an entire Cruiser into a separatist command, destroying the entire Ryloth blocade with just one empty ship. Separatists wanted to do something simular later in the war by sending a republic cruiser filled with fuel tanks into a meeting place for commanders and generals, and if they would succeed at detonating it in a right spot then everyone in that meeting place would be dead as fuck. AND STILL despite them failing to do that they managed to still take a few cruisers with them when it exploded too soon. God you can excuse the technology but you cant excuse the absolute stupidity of those grown ass people in the movie. It's just not excusable

Metacritic is more reliable, in that they haven't done the extra legwork to find politically-driven reviewers the way RT has. Actually they didn't... because to force the "even the weakest dork nobody can become a hero" lame bullshit down kids throats (which is the whole purpose of this trilogy), the stronger sister had to die so it could inspire her nobody dork sister to become a hero and save one of the main characters... because "love triumphs against hate" kid of bullshit... + to become his love interest, because romance it's a crap that has to be in any generic audience movie so it makes the sentimental portion of the women audience feel satisfied when exiting the theater. It's just another tick in the usual Hollywood's cliché checkbox.
      Every step of the movie is to prove that initial point. That's why Rey's parents are irrelevant, because you don't have to be descendant from a strong Force character, you don't have to be someone of status. You can be the poorest piece of garbage in the galaxy and still be strong (bonus if you're also "... with the force") and go out there fight evil. That's why the Resistance will thrive now... because poor bastard slaves will now feel inspired to overcome the oppression and whatever. It's all about the old "hope" factor...
      Long story short: this is the overused plot of weak becomes strong against evil, which is relatable to the common folk out there. And what did these 2 movies (so far) did for the Star Wars story franchise? Absolutely nothing. It was a rehash from the previous SW movies (specially the original 3) and that makes them nothing more than "nostalgia fan service".... specially Force Awakens, god, that was shameless copy-paste to make old fans go into hyper ventilation mode after so many years. And the next one probably won't do much more than that.
      Rogue One was the only proper SW movie recently and is still was about old loose ends. At least it did it properly. Solo was just stupid and a fan "compensation" for the death of Han in Force Awakens nobody asked for... and when they did it, they failed miserably. Obi-Wan with Ewan McGregor was the one people wanted, but if it would to be made like Solo... well, I guess we dodged a bullet...
      Star Wars has an entire galaxy of stories to tell, and there's plenty of other things people want to see, they want new Star Wars.
      Can't wait for this Skywalker story to be finally over... If they plan on doing something with Obi-Wan/Ewan, better be a TV/streaming show, because the movie standards are just too limiting to make good non-generic material.

    • @JokeeGA5
      @JokeeGA5 2 года назад +7

      I mean bombers used a tight formation too. It was safer that way, but once set upon by enemy fighters, they’d fan out to allow the gunners better field of fire, while minimizing damage from a shot down plane hitting someone else. This movie showed us exactly why. So one tie fighter wouldn’t take out 3 bombers without even meaning to. It’s just stupid.

    • @Mobius118

      Hey, I’m your resident aircraft dork, and while you’re basically completely right, WW2 bombers did use tight formations as it gave them better and mutual coverage from all the bombers guns against enemy fighters. The death star in episode 4 had the same issue. They could have built 10000 star destroyers and spread them all across the galaxy. But no they have built a huge ball that could be destroyed by a few x wings instead.
      So then in episode 6 they did the same mistake again to then repeat it in episode 7.

They should’ve at least had some sort of shield system to justify the bulky size and slow movement, but no let’s just make the payload twice the ship size, place the bombs right on the walls with no room between them, make the bomb holders loose enough so that they can bang into each other before being deployed, AND, ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, NO SHIELDING!!!!!

      @@laynebonham3968 I think this is a valid point, the "magnetic bombs" would stick to the insides of the bay.
      @ Aryan Sadat You are right as well, magnetes will attract, if unequal polarisation is turned towards each other, and they will repel, if equal polarisation is turned towards each other.
      What is the problem with that? -> How to realise this!
      1. My assumption is, the polarisation of the bombs is static -> everything else is impractical
      2. The inside walls of the bay need to have the oppisite polarisation of the bombs, whichever side they face.
      -> What is the problem with that?
      The bombs are dropped in rows (according to footage)in free fall , meaning you can have the oppisite polarisation to the side of the bomb, but nothing prevents the bomb/bombs from spinning in mid-air, while traveling down! So it will stick to side!
      3. The bomberbay has 4 sides, but you can have only two polarisations!
      -> If two sides are without polarisation, the magnetic bombs will stick to it either way!
      ----> Possible Solution: There needs to be a rotating highenergy, magnetic field, with high frequency. It needs to be strong enough to have an influence on the bombs! remember: magnetic force is normally really strong over short distances, and really weak over long distances!
      It needs to be rotating with a high frequency, otherwise the bombs get just juggled around and smashed to the walls, which is asking for disaster!
      ----> How can you do that? -> you could induce an highenergy field via high voltage and make it rotate (with a spinnig cylinder made out of conducting material inside that bomberway walls? Oo)
      -> I wonder, wouldn´t it be really dangerous(due to high voltage) to be inside the bomberbay whenever the field is on? Rose´s Sister WTF? XD
      -> This technology would be extremely energyconsuming and therefore costinefficient, because this bomber with this much of expensive technology and material would be blown to pieces in, I assume, 9/10 times LOL
      4. There is no magnetic field present in bomberbay, therefore the bombs can´t be magnetic!!!
      -----> Due to my explenation, that there needs to be an rotating magnetic field, to make "magnetic bombs" work at all, we would see a phenomenom, that we don´t see in movie.
      --------------------> Because of the rotating magnetic field, and due to lining up to the constantly changing magnetic field, the BOMBS WOULD ROTATE in midair while falling down, either in a straight line, or in a slight spiral!
      We don´t see anything like this. The explanation "magnetic bombs" makes no sense in this movie.
      If you want to make this explanation work in the movie, just show us the consequences, that come together with the explanation/technology!
      If you don´t, you are just lazy, RYAN!!!!
      If we don´t see it, we think :" bullshit!", because most of us have at least an intuitive understanding of physics.
      If you don´t take this into consideration, RYAN!, you will have to anticipate even more backlash in your next movies :)

    The Empire might have been inspired by Nazi Germany but the space battles are more so inspired by the naval battles that took place between the US and Japan, which is why you have destroyers, frigates, corvettes and battleships, and larger capital ships which launch fighters like a naval aircraft carrier. The thing is, these battles did include bombers, but not slow moving fortress bombers which bomb large land targets, but fast moving dive bombers. Dive bombers are probably what Lucas had in mind with the Y-wings.

The ship having a larger and stronger field should push all of them away even as the lower ones start pushing back against the bombs above them. But this explanation also doesn't work because all of the bombs dropped straight down and in a system with only repelling forces the bombs would start spreading out instead of dropping in a straight line. Most ships have anti fighter turrets to give some defence against smaller craft. If you watched rogue one, which i assume you have, then you should know that a fair amount of fighters were shot down with turrets through out the movie. So even if poe was a more effective combat unit than red gold and blue squadron put together, the bombers should have still met some form of defence. Not to mention if a tie fighter decided to take one for the team.

I know poe took out all the large batteries in the span of about a minute and that dispite 30+ tie fighters being deployed only 3 decided to target poe. My point is why the dreadnaught had no light anti fighter turrets. You know turrets that are not bigger than an x wing. The reason that i don't consider the batteries in the dreadnaught anti fighter turrets is because they are so big, they would probably one shot small freighters. If you rewatch return of the Jedi, the surface of the death star and the executor are covered in small turrets. In a single frame of the death star surface during the death star assault, i can easily count at least 7 turrets on screen. The fact that these don't exist on the dreadnaught is ether the writers purposefully giving the first order a handicap or that the writers don't know anything about the medium they are writing about.

      the B-17 in WW2 was the first: Many planes with many defensive MGs.
      Something like the F/A-18 is the second: A fighter that can also drop stuff.

They have everyone do that whenever they do something we haven't seen them do. Not something we haven't seen. Just something we haven't seen them do. Rey likes shooting the gun. In Force Awakens Poe gets all excited at how fast a TIE Fighter can go...then again in Last Jedi when his X-Wing has that booster rocket. Finn gets excited shooting TIE Fighters multiple times and really just says "WHOO" at almost anything he sees. Han is inexplicably using Chewie's Bowcaster for the first time and actually turns to him and says he likes it which makes me absolutely crazy. Why do they always have to draw out attention to the fact they're doing a new thing and they're happy about it. This kind of technology is common place in Star Wars.
Thats because these idiots ALL believe (because someone said it and they listened) that during lightspeed/hyperspace, the ship SOMEHOW goes out of existance, goes into some kind of wormhole or something, and then just appears on the other side., When we can clearly hear Han Saying in the first movie "Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?" .. so how do you fly THROUGH a Star, if you're not actually travelling in space but a wormhole, and why can you fly through a star and get killed, but not a ship? ffs

This is to say nothing for the quality of the movie, but genuinely, the way those bombs are released, that is how they would fall. Like 100%, that’s real world physics.
      They are pushed out at a set velocity, and then they maintain that velocity. They’re in space, that’s how physics works.
      In effect, the ship itself is just a machine gun with a very low muzzle velocity, and because there’s no atmosphere, or gravity, once the bombs leave the end of the “gun” they neither accelerate or decelerate which is why they maintain their formation and move at the same speed, and therefore stay in the same formation as they fall

    The "the bombs are magnetic" response is the most hilarious, for several reasons
    1. The star ships are made of an alloy, kind of like aluminium, fighters are made from a ferroceramic material, meaning that these magnetic bombs are the wrong tool for the job because they would be attracted to the bomber they are in, or if put at an opposing polarity, would then seek out other fighters, maybe bombers or space shrapnel.
    2. If they are magnetic, they are moving far slower than magnets that have air resistance to compete with. The U.S. navy have a rail/ coil gun that can magnetically propel munitions at Mach 6.
    3. If they were magnetic, the bombs would probably join together in a big ring of death, joing +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
    4. If the bombs were magnetic, why are they not used via sling when fighting on Hoth? It would be way more effective than a blaster.
    Do these bombers have some kind of energy curtain that isolates the bomber's atmosphere from space?

      Yeah too bad they made a single movie. If only they never made one then it could have been everything you wanted

      Yeah I only acknowledge rogue one bc it doesn’t affect anything. That’s what they should’ve stayed to. I always ponder why in every instance the new trilogy creators decide “let’s make it worse”. Rey origin? Let’s make it pointless. Han and the princess relationship? Let’s make it pointless. Luke and his enhanced powers and legacy? Let’s make it pointless. Snoke? Let’s make him pointless. It goes on and on and on. Whenever they’re given two choices, awesome or pointless, they go with the shit option. It doesn’t upset me anymore bc I view it as non canon bullshit, but it is super disappointing bc they only get one shot at this. Carrie is gone and Han and Luke are dead. Fucking idiots man. Thank God we have the original trilogy with some prequels to mess with lol.

      When I first saw ep. 7 & 8 I was thinking: did they let a Star Wars HATER make these films?
      On the good side ep. 1 - 3 now seem to be marvels in comparison...
