colosseum and gale of darkness live in my brain so severely that i occasionally have dreams where they get a new game in the series made by the same developers all these years later. i genuinely think that they're better games than the slop pokemon company puts out these days 😭
I’m with you on that! Even with the dated visuals, the pokemon animations are fantastic and the music is stellar. If you haven’t played it already, there’s a rom hack of colosseum called grand colosseum that’s really good! It changes some of the pokemon, adds physical special split, fairy type, new moves, annnd alola forms! 😮
One thing I loved about these games are the Pokemon animations. They are SO much better than the current main games that's it not even funny. One of my favorites is Wailord because it actually looks huge. You can see so much personality in each of the pokemon.
Colosseum and XD are amazing. I get their flaws but they are so different it's just refreshing to revisit and I do often. I also still have my Lugia ganecube and my childhood copy of the games :)
I like Colosseum more, but I do like XD too and approve of the changes they made to Shadow Pokemon. Like in Colosseum, I sometimes just leave the Shadow at half hp before trying to catch it just so it can either weaken itself and not risk getting it low enough that the attack I did was enough for it to ko itself with recoil from Shadow Rush
the way I interpret the coliseum games is very simple. they were PROMOTIONAL GAMES to help market the new Gen 3 feature of double battles since Ruby and Sapphire had so little of the mechanic in the game itself.
the final fights having multiple pokemon you can snag really adds a layer of difficult too. You essentially "wasting" turns to try and capture the difficult pokemon, which takes multiple pokeballs usually. Whilst also not trying to faint the pokemon. Really adds so much to the fight which is already difficult.
I feel like GF introducing regional variants in the main games is actually an idea I feel a sequel could utilize quite well. Setting the game years after Gale could yield some interesting Orre regional forms that could adapt to the environment. Great vid!
I think this is the first video essay I've seen that acknowledges the existence of Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon Go. You've earned respect for that. And while your point still stands, I actually have a Pokemon that I strongly associate with Orree. Vibera. Its a long story. But to sumerize, when I played Ruby and Sapphire I had no idea Vibera and Flygon existed. I may have saw one or two Trapinch, but never realized it was part of that same line. Then I played Pokemon Colosseum, saw a Vibera for the first time, and it has been one of my favorite Pokemon from that generation ever since. And I think that's part of what Orre did so well as a region. It made you look at Pokemon you may have originally overlooked and experience them in a new light.
I love your story, its so funny because I also associate Flygon with something other than Ruby and Sapphire but its not these games either, when I think of flygon I always remember the movie Pokemon: Jirachi Wishmaker which is my favorite Pokemon movie

I recently played a Pokémon XD ROM hack called POKEMON XG: Next Gen. It was pretty good and made me really enjoy the game again. The added difficulty and new Pokémon from Sun and Moon made it feel like a true Gen 3 experience, which I've always associated with Pokémon battles.
Technically bonsly made its first appearance in XD though it was a cameo and uncatchable. Though i think in terms of new pokemon, these side games had to fill in the gaps from what was missing with the GBA reset. So largely most of their dex was filled with johto.
I remember spending so much time just to try to get Ho-Oh and Lugia since they were the only ways for me to get them at the time. It felt like it took years getting them...which probably wasn't. Another memorable time was my experience in trying to get the Jirachi disc since this was a like a year or two after the Colloseum came out and it was also a time before I understood the concept of pre-order bonus. I knew as a kid that they were already rare, but I didn't give up so I ended up going to almost every different Gamestop I knew at the time. It was store per week since my parents could only take me to a different mall on the weekend. I finally managed to find one in the farthest Gamestop I knew at the time, which was probably about 2 hours away from my home by car. It probably cost less than $40 since my parents bought it for me with no problems. I can't remember if it was used or new though, but I remember I was shocked when the employee just casually said they have a copy of it since I had no expectations at the time. Probably one of my luckiest hunts as a kid.
That’s such a nice memory, and one of my favorite things about collecting things, the hunt is part of the fun and what sticks around in your memory in the end
I love Colosseum. It was a genuinely different type of story to have and as a huge fan of double battles, this was heavenly. I enjoyed XD but felt like it wasn't different enough. It was still worth playing though and im glad I got it when it was new all those years ago now it is so expensive
That makes sense, I feel like XD hit me more because it was the first of the two that I played and so going back to colosseum that game felt like it wasn’t as complete. Both games are definitely worth playing though and a lot of fun
What's super fun as well is these games are the first games to be based off of America, long beore Gen 5. These games are based around the area around Phoenix Arizona

Just responded to someone else about this too lol, I totally misunderstood the mechanic. So you should be able to get Tediursa to be purifiable on time unless your get really unlucky and they don't enter reverse mode like at all.
If you thought Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness have been forgotten, Pokemon Channel is the one that's always forgotten about, despite me enjoying that game as much as Hey You Pikachu....

But when we moved in May 2002, and later on in the mid 2000s, somehow we lost the game cartridge to the old Hey You Pikachu, resulting in my mom throwing out the N64 thinking it was broken when it really wasn't. So we ended up getting another N64 console in 2014, and eventually I bought the game back in 2021/2022 from a seller on Ebay whom had a copy of it form a blockbuster in Alaska (Pretty cool if you ask me). As for Pokemon Channel, well after 2016/2017 the disc broke due to too many scratches over the years so, I figured we wouldn't bother to buy it and just have it on an emulator instead...But we still own the original copy from 2003 nevertheless (It was my older sister's gift back in the day).

Pokemon Colosseum was done by people who NEVER PLAYED pokemon. It was the first time the studio had ever heard of Pokemon. So Colosseum being a mess, makes sense; and at times a lot of the damage Calculations are wrong; Legends still has this issue.
On the subject of Shadow Pokémon, I don’t think Colosseum and XD are the first to implement the system nor do I believe that Pokémon Go’s implementation is based on Colosseum and XD. In the Gen I and II TCG, there was a variant of Pokémon called Dark Pokémon (Bad Pokémon in Japanese) and they can be had counterparts called Light Pokémon (Gentle Pokémon in Japanese). The aggressive nature of the Dark Pokémon movesets and the “aura” of the Light Pokémon make me believe that the TCG are what Go’s Shadow and Purified Pokémon are based on the TCG and only borrowing the purification system from Colosseum in order to tie the two archetypes together.
That’s really interesting, I collected the cards a lot as a kid but I don’t remember that, I wasn’t the most observant kid so that’s probably on me lol, it’s still fascinating that they would chose to bring that system to GameCube and then through to Pokemon Go, it feels like it still lacks any main line representation

Im going to catch the Scyther from XD and take him through every region to defeat all the elite 4's and then when he goes to the Switch after beating SWSH, i will evolve him in PLA into Kleavor. I just want him to have ribbons that prove hes been in every region. And hell be a very rare Kleavor that says he comes from a distant land. I wish all the pokemon that moved into Orre in XD would get Orrean forms.....
Love the tone of your video! Your love for XD shines through and I am always happy to sing the GameCube Pokemon duology's praises. I have a different perspective on some points however. I have replayed XD about 10 times and I don't remember having to go back and grind more shadow gauge on Teddiursa. If anything, I have Teddiursa ready and Poochyena and Ledyba not far behind. Maybe we take different paths though! The fact of the Orre region not having any new pokemon to define it does ring partly true. I strongly remember Colosseum's identity because it reunited players with Johto pokemon that were locked to gbc. XD came out after FRLG fixed some availability, but it introduced Bonsly and it's first playable experience (albeit very limited to battle bingo). Love the video, but I hope if others are curious about Colosseum and XD they will understand that there are many different experiences and some of those experiences were only available in the early 00s!
I played through the game twice for the video and both times my tediursa was nowhere close to ready, I went out of my way to fight everyone I could along the way so I’m not totally sure 🤷 I really hope people go back and play these games too because they do hold up really well and they are just a really good time.

Slateports a huge town can be traversed in a moderate amount of steps, one block is probably quite a few steps in universe.

That could have played a role, but the price difference wasn’t really that crazy. The GameCube games were only $50 while the Gameboy games were around $35.
How high were you when YOU decided that coliseum & XD were over looked? Search either title and there is so much love for it. This is 2024 muchacho, this video of pokemons first 3d story game should of came out when x&y came out on the 3ds or when Lets Go came out as the first console games. Hell even when pokemonGo started using Shadow pokemon or Shadow Lugia. All im saying is rename the vid
I think you’re missing the point. In fact I say it in the beginning of the video, there certainly is love for these games, and you’ll definitely find that love when you specifically go looking for it, but if you talk to the the general populace many barely remember or don’t even know about these games, so they are overlooked “muchacho.” Maybe watch the video before commenting next time.

On a technicality, bonsly and munchlax were introduced in XD, but you couldn't catch them or use them.

1:20 Colosseum and XD are great Gen 3 games, but just because they're using the battle system, doesn't make them mainline games. =P

I think this game came out too soon. If it were released today, it would benefit from regional fakes or regional variants.
I dont think they immediately get into different terrain in game universe as opposed to from our pov
I mean as much as I want to agree, I’ll never forget the route in RSE where its all grassy and nice and then bam its suddenly a desert
@@AndiDoesThing Nice, that route actually was the one in mind too but I think that cause boulders needed for strength for instance are assumed to be huge along with Cut trees being big enough to block a route. Slateports a huge town can be traversed in a moderate amount of steps, one block is probably quite a few steps in universe.
To be fair these games were made to fill out the dex for gen 3 and XD helped with giving Pokemon exclusive moves for competitive play
That’s interesting I never thought about that. Seems kind of convoluted since I have never actually met someone who owns the gameboy player for GameCube
@@AndiDoesThing oh nah you didn’t need the GameBoy player you just need a GameCube and gba link cable i believe it cost a tiny bit more or the same price as the link cable at the time

The problem rant about not having no new pokemon was not the problem with the games , it was just expensive to get them
That could have played a role, but the price difference wasn’t really that crazy. The GameCube games were only $50 while the Gameboy games were around $35.
XD Gale of Darkness is my favorite Pokemon game besides Soul Silver.
Both are amazing choices, I miss my DS and Soul Silver

This is 2024 muchacho, this video of pokemons first 3d story game should of came out when x&y came out on the 3ds or when Lets Go came out as the first console games. Hell even when pokemonGo started using Shadow pokemon or Shadow Lugia.

I think you’re missing the point. In fact I say it in the beginning of the video, there certainly is love for these games, and you’ll definitely find that love when you specifically go looking for it, but if you talk to the the general populace many barely remember or don’t even know about these games, so they are overlooked “muchacho.” Maybe watch the video before commenting next time.
