@mark it absolutely does not mean that. For the price they paid, it was a no brainer regardless of JJ or his injury. It is most likely insurance for Darnold this season and the possibility of a back up to JJ next season if the Vikings like what they see the next 2 months. And if they don’t want him, they can let him go and possibly get a comp pick for him if he signs elsewhere.
There are no downsides here. He’s not signed to be a starter, Dimes get to rehab his image, he’s on the PS for pennies, and either he’s a long term JJ backup OR he’s signed elsewhere and factors into the comp pick situation
I don't understand how this move is anything but good news. I don't believe there is even a conversation between who is a better backup between Jones and Mullens. Mullens is not quite QB2 quality. He screams QB3/desperate team QB2 to me. I believe Jones is going to be a solid career QB2. He just needs to learn the playbook first.
The Jones signing is only significant if Jones acclimates well, and is willing to serve as a long term back up behind JJ for the the foreseeable future. That means signing an extension for back up money. Is this possible? The fact that the Vikings were able to sign Jones to the PS indicates that perhaps it is, as any team who had aspirations of inserting Jones as a starter at some point could have signed him. The league may be done with Jones as a starter, and if so Minnesota was a good landing spot for him. If a QB needy team wants to take a chance then all this was is a high profile signing with no real impact for the Vikings. I see no downside for the Vikings.
It's possible Matthew is over-thinking this. IMO Sam isn't going to be affected at all by the Jones signing. He is going to be the starter for the Vikings the entire season assuming he stays healthy, and the Vikings are going with JJ next season. I believe Jones changes nothing for Darnold, and Sam knows this. If anything, the Jones signing is more of a concern for Mullins because ramifications could extend past this season.
who knows JJ could be a bust or for that matter injury prone. He still has not taken a regular season snap and you already think that he will be a star. will wait and see
@58:34 your absolutely right but mullens throws alot of picks as well ... i just really believe in koc and regardless what happens its not like jones will ever be more then a backup here
Matt its OK. I know it hurts when you are faced with the horror that is losing your ragtag collection of Viking journeyman backup QBs. Mullens is an older QB and its time for him to go to the farm. Sh, Shhh its OK. Just like Sam - Daniel will be overhauled and detailed and be ready for next year.
You don't have to worry about another team picking him up from our practice squad because Jones has to agree to go. He can turn it down and based on him coming here, he will
Mullens is so underrated by Vikings fans that it's disgusting. Throwing for over a thousand yards in three games spans is not common in the NFL. I doubt that Daniel Jones has achieved that ever in his career, yet all the comments you talk about that people are saying Matthew state that he's better than Mullens. I am so happy they are not in charge of personnel on this team. Mullens even has a higher quarterback rating yet they think Jones is better. Mullins has come in at quarterback twice this year and completed both passes with no hickups. He's fearless and he should be our backup quarterback until he retires. In addition, if Darnold takes the team to the Super Bowl, then I hope the Vikings trade McCarthy to the Chargers and roll with Sam and Nick. I think Sam knows how good Nick Mullens is and that's why every time he's had to come out for an injury he's made sure to get back in as fast as humanly possible, so Nick Mullens can't continue to put together an impressive resume here in Minnesota
Wow disagree with ya Matt. If they're planning for next year that means they can't afford Sam. That means Sam's happy because he got paid and he will owe KOC a lifetime debt for changing the dynamic of his family lineage. THAT is what Sam wants Also why not replace Rypien instead of Mullens? It's no distraction. Hey Sam, in the hallway, we're bringing in DJ as the 3, cool? Cool.
Now, you are going to have Darnold looking over his shoulders. Mullens will be unhappy to be demoted and added pressure to J.J McCarthy if he is not performing to standard next year.

Options are good. QBs are only one play away from not playing. And we don’t know the conversations KOC has had with them. Also, competition is good.
There are no downsides here.

It’s win win for the Vikings

Jones still has a good skillset....koccan straighten him up ..Darnoldize him
This is a win for both Danny Dimes & the Vikings. He’s better than any other backup QB on the roster. No brainer to me!! 😊
Yeah, you right

IM NEW, WHAT IS A COMPIK?
Good signing we need a better backup

I would tag Sam and if you get a great trade offer for him. If not JJ can learn behind Sam

Think back to Green Bay,For years Aaron Rodgers sat as a backup for Brett Favre. They stayed there till Favre left and the rest is history!

Yah Bri I think your over thinking this whole tithing and Sam
Kwesi draft picks do not work out.sign darnold.
My take, KOC’s kids are getting old enough to become annoying, so now he has another reason (working with Jones) to be at work more. 😂
No it isnt!

It means mccarthy is not comming back.mullens should leave now.
From a torn meniscus. The most common sports injury. Just admit you don't know what you're talking about.
