Replaced my Fanatec CS 1.5 shift with a much more expensive ProSim H pattern shifter. The key feature the ProSim has that mattered to me was centering spring tension adjustment. Both shifters have an adjustment for how hard it is to push the stick into gear, but the CS 1.5 centering tension has always felt to soft to me which makes it easier to miss a shift. Just purchased the VNM Shifter for my PS5 using a drivehub instead of this. Purely down to the horror story's of mis-shift issues with the Fanatec. It's about time they made a Mk2 version of this shifter. It's not a case of "What's not broke doesn't need fixing" because these always seem to break! lol.
Pretty good review, this shifter have been on my wishlist for a while, but I can't try it IRL anywhere, so I'm still not sure whether it's worth it or not because it's so expensive for a shifter, also the fact that I don't think it will improve my laptime but only for the immersion.
Yep that's a tricky dilemma. It's a shame you can't try it somewhere. It's really good, but if you drive a manual h-pattern in real life, you cannot expect a piece of sim hardware currently to give you the same feedback as a real gearbox does. It's a lot of money, but i suggest looking at the price of them second hand. If they're selling for a similar price to new, then it's worth the risk. You wont be disappointed as long as you are expecting a good piece of sim hardware, and not a like for like experience compared to real life.
Also, anyone willing to slap down that much money on a sim racing piece of equipment usually will have taken very good care of it. Unlike a piece of equipment that is cheap where people are more likely to not be so careful. Unless the owner is some rich asshole who just doesn't care because they can buy 5 more without even hesitating. But in my experience, the really serious sim racers who spend a ton on their equipment will take care of it. So buying Fanatec equipment used isn't as risky as, say, buying like a Logitech G29, which is cheap and less likely to have been carefully used and maintained.
Pretty solid video. You talked about how wheel bases and pedals evolve and shifters don't, and there's a simple explanation I can think of - a shifter gives you absolutely no advantage in racing, you can do the very same job using paddle shifters that came with wheel and be just as fast. High end pedals allow for more precision and consistency by having loadcells or higher resolution, DD wheel bases offer more detailed and faster FFB, meanwhile high end shifter will work the same as logitech ones, just offering more rewarding experience.
Yep I did mention that too that you can live without them. It’s an immersion tool more so than something to make you quicker. You’re right in everything you just said I think...
Hmm. being able to rev match and slip the clutch in a corner is sometimes nice, especially a tight 2nd gear corner with a car that has a touchy throttle
Laurence Dusoswa I would but I live in oz and there is a distributor here so shipping wouldn’t be as high for me. Also I am looking at the peddles but might be going with the HE sprints. But I noticed in the vid I mention cable length and now looking at USB extension that is of high quality and a USB hub as I will need that regardless.
For people with unintentional misshifts with the fanatec: I had frequent misshifts with this (otherwise fantastic ) (newly bought) shifter. I fixed it by adding a piece of insulating tape on one of the connecting boards. Apparently something made contact sometimes, what caused a shift in 3rd or 1st or reverse unintentionally. It was an easy fix, no risk doing it myself. After that, problem solved. ruclips.net/video/16SoByd8ycg/видео.html
The tape is apparently a placebo for just taking off the top, playing with the connectors and putting it back. Nothing in there is moving that would cause the contacts to touch, but since the device is using hall sensors to detect shifts, any electromagnetic interference or grounding issues can cause the values to jump around. Some people have talked about ensuring proper ground, but I've found just taking the top off and rechecking the connections does the trick (note: I did the tape thing as well).
@@ModMINI Correct about the tape, I've come to the conclusion it wasnt' the tape, but build up of static electricity (which points to a grounding issue. Removing the top, fiddling around, probably discharges and the cycle begins again. Rinse and repeat every so often.

More exotic brands than fanatec? I'm new to sim racing and I just got a g920 because it was perfect for the budget and I looked at what I would want from fanatec. It cost $2,000+ for wheelbase, steering wheel, shifter, handbrake, and pedals. How much more exotic can you get? I know there was some direct drive wheel base for $2600 or something but that's literally insane 🤷♂️
Yep it tells a story... but which one? Are people lazy because you can just use paddle shifters? Or is it not worth the effort to put more research and development into the products? Or both?
@@LaurenceDusoswa imho it isn't an easy product to develop and build, look at Heusinkveld and their attempt at making one, which failed in the end after just one prototype. also, there aren't much people who are willing to drive historic cars with the rise of GT3 and similar categories all over the sims.

Apparently you're lucky with Fanatec products. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Fanatec even to my greatest enemy. After 2 weeks of use, Shifter began to make strange sounds and squeak as if it wasn't well lubricated. After less than two months, he stopped choosing the right gears. Currently, unfortunately, I am servicing it 3 times on my own, because I would sooner die than it would be properly serviced by Fanatec. Continuous blame on the user by this company and forcing to send dozens of videos showing the defect can upset even the most calm person. The Thrustmaster TH8A I had before was practically indestructible and reliable.
Violin construction was perfected in the 17th century and hasn't changed in design since the 18th century. So 7 years of being unable to improve on a really good shifter shouldn't be that big of a deal. ;)
Hahaha that’s true. But the violin is the real thing. The h shifter on a sim rig is for simulation. I think it needs to be closer to the real thing. Don’t ask me how to do that, but right now if you had a sim shifter in your real car you would not enjoy driving it as much.
@@LaurenceDusoswa That’s just ridiculous, to the point of being stupid; tell me, would you want to use ANY piece of sim racing hardware in a real car? How would you go using some Clubsport v3 pedals in a real car, having zero feedback for the clutch and brake pedals? In a real car one can actually feel when the brakes lock and with practice one can feel when they’re just about to lock, and stay on the threshold of locking to achieve the maximum possible braking performance. And with a clutch pedal one can feel the rpm drop and the engine starting to bog down if either not enough rpm or letting the clutch pedal out too quickly. Obviously since nothing like that is even remotely possible on a sim racing setup, your remark seems completely asinine.
A real problem with Fanatec handbrake 1.5 Supposedly quality gear but cheap crap. My cord broke three days after I hooked it up. Cheap plastic 8th inch jack to a cheap RJ-45 that’s German quality for you! = made in china
@@LaurenceDusoswa I've done it a few times, dont get me wrong its one of the best out there and i prefer it, but its not as reliable as some of the others. Ive had to fix mine several times. There’s a big difference. No company is paying me for this. If my community wants to use my links I make a small amount of money with each completed purchase. That helps me buy new hardware for more reviews. I wouldn’t accept money from a company whose hardware I’m reviewing. And for a reviewer to buy every single piece of hardware with money not earned by the channel is just not possible. Hope that clears things up. Definitely not sponsored.

I don't know anything about drifting, but isn't the feel better with an actual shifter compared to paddle shifters?
I miss speeds all the time with the g29 shifter. It feels like a toy and don't compare at all to a real car.
Hmm. being able to rev match and slip the clutch in a corner is sometimes nice, especially a tight 2nd gear corner with a car that has a touchy throttle
Great review I am about to drop some cash on dd and looking at this shifter and handbrake. Can’t wait.
I would greatly appreciate if you use my affiliate link in the description as I will make a commission but it won’t cost you a cent extra.
Nice! Thanks for sharing
I fixed it two times that way and it worked for a while and went back to misshifting. Worsed fanatec builds
Hi, i really love h shifter but sad to see that we havent many product to simulate h race shifter for old f1 car or groupe c.
Imo fanatec is good for some car class.
frex is perhaps the way for other class.
Good video
Thanks for the kind words! Frex looks good but I don’t have experience with them and don’t even know anyone who has one.
I really like my SQ 1.5 shifter but I am struggling to get rid of the common mid shift issues. Unfortunately there isn’t really an alternative unit. I would love heusinkveld to release their prototype h-pattern but it seems they have decided to not concentrate on it for now.
Yeah that has been parked. It’s a real pity you’re getting the issue. I haven’t experienced it. It would be amazing to have an alternative
Laurence Dusoswa I’m working my way through a few forum fixes to see if I can get it back working. But for now I can’t trust it. Hopefully I can get it back to working order.
I had the same problem. It was caused by a small pcb not being properly insulated which was fixed with a piece of insulating tape on the back. see ruclips.net/video/16SoByd8ycg/видео.html
@@deegeeooh yeah tried that, insulating tape all over it but still Mia shifts. Usually when going from 3rd to 4th it will select 2nd or reverse. Happens every 50 gearshifts or so
Bonsoir, shifter très bien construit, fait son poids,ai acheté Black Friday a l'air très solide.😻
Nice! The Black Friday sale was GREAT!
Great videography! Thank you for including console details 😉
Thanks Flea! Console gamers are people too! Apparently... 😂😂😂
For those who don't have a fanatec wheel base, buying the fanatec shifter and the Handbrake means they have also to buy 2 usb adapters ??
Yep that’s what I had to do :(
if im bying shifter and handbrake and dont have the wheelbase,do i need 2 usb adapters(one for each part)? Great review also :)
Yes, I had to buy two adapters! If you’re buying, please consider using my affiliate links (in the description)
@@LaurenceDusoswa ok,thanks! sure, ill try to remember that when im buying.
What track is that you're using? Thanks !
A lovely little technical track with only 3 real corners :) it’s bikernieki! One of the best mod tracks out there in my opinion
Group A Escort in Dirt 2.0 is a 7 speed manual h pattern.......
Oh yeah? Interesting! Didn’t know that
More exotic brands than fanatec? I'm new to sim racing and I just got a g920 because it was perfect for the budget and I looked at what I would want from fanatec. It cost $2,000+ for wheelbase, steering wheel, shifter, handbrake, and pedals. How much more exotic can you get? I know there was some direct drive wheel base for $2600 or something but that's literally insane 🤷♂️
You can spend as much as you want to in the game. There’s no upper limit :)
There is company based in UK who makes H-pattern shifter for 1.2k£
I'm curious to see whether the VNM Shifter does better than the Fanatec 🤔
Check out my VNM shifter review ;)
the fact that the best H shifter currently available is a product made in 2013 tells a lot
SuperMonacoGP It’s a complex product to develop for sure but it’s just surprising that there isn’t a better consumer grade shifter out there
If you were to use the the drivehub, would you be able to use the fanatec shifter with a Thrustmaster TS 300 on a ps5?
As far as I know, yes. But I’m no expert, I have never used a drivehub before
bruh, that shipping is atrocious, one would think that because you're already spending hundreds of dollars with them they would offer free shipping.
I think that if you buy other stuff, the shipping is way cheaper. But if you just want a USB adapter you’re gonna get screwed :p
Ooh I spot an S13. Nice!
A subtle hint that I’m a car guy ;)
I have a question will this shift work on ATS & ETS those are the only games I really enjoy hope to get and answer.
On pc this shifter should work with any title as long as you can map controls. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with either of those but have a quick google to make 100% sure
Long time no see its a nice shifter. But I perfer th8a from. Thrustmaster to me it feels more stable..i tried fanatec its good but gears are too close..sometimes I mess gears
I have a TH8a shifter review coming in the next few weeks ;)
@@LaurenceDusoswa ok cool
You end up doing this th8a yet???
I wonder if there's a mod to make an actual metal H-gate like in old Ferrari's?
The H gate is actual cast aluminum. (it's inside the big black box)
Do I need the USB adapter if I’m playing on pc of PlayStation?
Or*
The USB adapter is only for PC unfortunately. If you're on playstation, you can only use this with a fanatec wheelbase and do not need a usb adapter at all
Pro sim H Pattern shifter is the best but out of most peoples budgets
I’m getting one for test in the coming weeks
@@LaurenceDusoswa me too.
Did you get the black and gold special edition?
@@LaurenceDusoswa oh, for testing. You'll want to keep it 🤣
Hahaha I wish :p
I'm about to buy this. Could I use this on assetto corsa on ps4?
Yes you can, but only if you have a fanatec steering wheel base. Please consider using my affiliate links (in description) if you're going to buy ;)
@@LaurenceDusoswa absolutely
Throw is distance. You meant resistance. No way to adjust the former.
Not sure which part you’re referring to but yeah, there’s no way to adjust the throw other that using a longer gear knob or replacing the shaft. You can only adjust the resistance with the hex at the side.
can i use this fanatec shifter on the thrustmaster t300rs?,.
On PC, yes. You need a USB adapter for the shifter
@@LaurenceDusoswa Thank you!, planning to start sim racing and want the thrustmaster t300rs as my first wheel, and upgrade to fanatec in the future after having some experience and learn tweaking
Hey quick question can u install cube wheels to thrustmaster ??
Yes you certainly can! They sell an adapter on their site. It does need to be hooked up to your pc via USB though as it won’t connect the buttons to your pc without a dedicated cable.
@@LaurenceDusoswa ok thank you..im check it out
So does this shifter work with a logitech g920?
On console, no. On PC, yes, but only with a fanatec USB adapter.
Will the pair with any of the fanatec wheels?
Yes! If you’re on console or PC it will work with all the modern wheels and if you want to run it on pc with another non fanatec wheelbase you can buy a USB adapter. I have links in the description ;)
@@LaurenceDusoswa nice, I just ordered this kit. One more question. If I buy the load cell pedal kit... that is just the one pedal to add to the base that comes with this kit correct? Its 139 dollars.
My shifter went bad after two months using it.. replaced the internal stuff, it worked for another week and shit the bed again. Fanatec never again.
I’ve heard of some people having a similar experience :( how long ago was that?
@@LaurenceDusoswa 6 months
Ah that sucks :( I’ve had no bad luck thankfully but I’ve heard some horror stories :(

absolutely no problem :)
@@MrFrosty888 I know you wrote your comment about 6 months ago but I bought some Clubsport v3 pedals, a universal steering wheel hub and this shifter and the postage was very reasonable. Also I’m just curious as to who is the seller you keep mentioning? Fanatec has their own Aus specific section of their site and a warehouse in Australia and don’t have any resellers or similar. For example, on Pagnian’s site they even say that they cannot match the prices Fanatec sells their products for and since they already have an Australian warehouse and very reasonable postage, why would you buy from anyone else, especially given that it’ll definitely be more expensive than purchasing directly from Fanatec?
Try a frex or if you are feeling very flush...a prosim
I’m tempted by the frex
I'm lucky enough to own fanatec DD one direct drive wheel also I have the formula wheel and a Porsche wheel set up all this is very expensive and not very enjoyable watching that money disappear but I'm looking at this Gear thinking maybe I've never ad Miss shift on my wheels but I still like idea using manual shift
manual shift is amazing especially for heel-toe and car control under braking!

I’d love to try one :) I emailed them and they had no interest in me reviewing it 😂😂😂
This is so true 👍. Well at least it's not as worst as thrustmaster Pedals, thrustmaster released so many great sim hub and they all have the same cheap plastic toy 🙄 pedals as thrustmaster think that the pedals are being used by little kids🤦🤣.
hahaha
I wish the prosim shifter wasn't 2grand
I know 😂😂😂 check out the VNM shifter though
Nice S13
Are you still having the wrong gear issue? I found a fix from 2Old4Forza that completely fixed the issue for me.
@@LaurenceDusoswa
That’s just ridiculous, to the point of being stupid; tell me, would you want to use ANY piece of sim racing hardware in a real car? How would you go using some Clubsport v3 pedals in a real car, having zero feedback for the clutch and brake pedals? In a real car one can actually feel when the brakes lock and with practice one can feel when they’re just about to lock, and stay on the threshold of locking to achieve the maximum possible braking performance. And with a clutch pedal one can feel the rpm drop and the engine starting to bog down if either not enough rpm or letting the clutch pedal out too quickly. Obviously since nothing like that is even remotely possible on a sim racing setup, your remark seems completely asinine.
I think that’s the exact point I’m making @Aaron
A real problem with Fanatec handbrake 1.5 Supposedly quality gear but cheap crap. My cord broke three days after I hooked it up. Cheap plastic 8th inch jack to a cheap RJ-45 that’s German quality for you! = made in china
Yeah most sim racing bits come from China :p I have heard of quite a few failures of these. Mine is still going strong though
@@designamk1160 Many of the parts and electronics do come from china. What gear do you use?
To the H good, SQ bad.
The sequential could be better for sure
Unfortunately they are unreliable
There's only one issue with misshifts that i know of and that's sorted quite cheaply with some tape. There are many videos on it
@@LaurenceDusoswa I've done it a few times, dont get me wrong its one of the best out there and i prefer it, but its not as reliable as some of the others. Ive had to fix mine several times. One recommendation is not to switch back and forth from sequential to h-pattern. Best to use paddles for for it

Just say it's sponsored.
If it makes any difference, I also paid for this product with my own money and have never received a single product from fanatec
