The reason for the 7th gear lockout is because you would lose the wall that makes it easy to shift from 4th to 5th. If there was no 7th speed lockout you'd have to manually feel for the 5th gear gate all the time. Also the reason 2nd to 3rd doesn't have that problem is because the neutral center spring makes the shifter jump to the center, which is where 3rd gear is. you essentially just push up from 2nd and it will pop into 3rd by itself. Not the case with 4th to 5th.
Love your videos Karl. Your authenticity and optimism is awesome! The 7th gear lockout is super odd... all I can think is it might prevent you from accidentally shifting from 4th to 7th, and they have the 7th gear position mostly if you want to put reverse on the other side of 6th gear. My Camaro has Reverse in that position where 7th is on this shifter. So if you preferred reverse being on the opposite side of the first gate, that 7th position is for you. Fortunately not many cars have a 7th gear.
@@KarlGosling That’s a good point, although I’d prefer the option to have reverse in 8th gear, it feels more natural, more logical and closer to the cars I’ve driven in real life. That would have mean a new contact had to be added so it was probably cheaper to go without it.
@@KarlGosling I’m not a big fan of Fanatec but it looks like this will be my first purchase from them. I currently have the TH8A and need more realism and easy change between sequential and H-pattern. I have not found any shifter with quick change like this one (at least in this price bracket).
My only issues with the Fanatec shifter are when combined with the Fanatec handbrake as well. The handbrake will block one of the shifter's two switches for 8/H mode, and if you have it on the left it'll also block the tension adjustor. With it on the right, it seems impossible to switch between 8/H and Sequential modes because the left switch gets stuck immediately if you try to move it on its own. The handbrake is a huge PITA to install and remove, too, because you have to open the housing of it, and then remove hex screws that have zero clearance around them (unless you have a hex driver that can go right through both sides, but that means it's
i undrerstand the push down 7th gear, for people that have never drove irl, they cant miss shift, also for the agressive shifters out there haha. i think i like that its push for 7th but i dont think id use 7th much, very rarely actually and if i did need to i think id be in sequential. thanks for sharing
Thing about the push down gears, is it's ok with reverse because you're always going into reverse from neutral. Not the case with 6th to 7th. Not a deal breaker for me as I don't know a single H-pattern I would drive that has 7 gears, but still. That's a pretty weird thing to implement.
I just got mine 2 days ago and installed it yesterday and had this 7th gear issue on the mind. I find that pushing the shifter in while in 6th in preparation to go in 7th makes it pretty seemless, but I have yet to try it with a 7 gear car.
There is a guy on youtube who modded the shifter . can`t find the link to put up but he just drilled the hole out where the allen key goes in and used a longer bolt with a hex head through the case to the outside and can now adjust it by hand .was a while ago and maybe a little more to it . not done it but sure anyone wanting to can find it .
I have this shifter and love it, but man i wish the whole gear stick didn’t turn when using it. I know there is a fix for it but I don’t want to rip it open totally. Also the usb adapter has to be bought separately.
in all fairness, 7th is not a very common gear in a lot of cars... most cars i've driven have 6 gears and a reverse i do agree, that it's kinda weird to make 7th a depress-gear, probably just boils down to engineering limitation/efficiency considerations
Good stuff. I’m really keen to add some transducers to my Prime rig, but not sure where to begin. Buttkicker availability / prices in the UK appears to be poor 🤨
I know it's an old video, and you might no see this msg, but how noisy it is when shifting compared to a Moza HPG? I got a Moza and I can't use it when my partner is home.
Its a great product and as you say, it`s well made but considering the price of Fanatec stuff, you would of thought that they would have addressed this very common issue. To send it back, the sender has to foot the bill, which i hear, is around £40. I agree with the 7th gear push down, don`t get that.
Any reason to change from the TH8A to the Fanatec? Is almost impossible to miss shifts in the TH8A, and with some cheap adapters it can be easily improved
As an owner of a TH8A shifter, I completely disagree about never accidently moving into 7 when trying to go to 5th. Especially in the heat of the moment. I am literally watching your review because I've had enough of the TH8A and its rarely used 7th gear causing me headaches. Thanks to that 7th gear I actually went back to my g27 shifter from a TH8A imagine that? EDIT: And yes I know about 7th gear blockers (I have one installed from RichmoTech, but I'd have to block both 7 & R to solve my problem.
I had that problem also in the TH8! How I "solved" it? I used an o'ring (20x2mm or so...) and a plastic serrated clamp tighten to the left side of the metalic stucture and to the gear shifter shaft. I adjusted the plastic serrated clamp so that the "plastic serrated clamp + o'ring" will be streched when the shaft is in the direction of the 5th/6th gear. If I wan't to put it in 7th gear or reverse, I will have to apply more force to the gear know so the o'ring will strech and allow the shaft to go all the way. This is a DIY you can easily do and create a "virtual wall" that prevents from shifting from 4th to 7th!!
This really is the best H pattern shifter until you want to spend big money IMO mate, the TM one is very soft, floppy and arcade like in comparison, although still a step up from a Logitech shifter.

With my one the spring for the SQ-function broke after using it a few hours in Dirt Rally and I saw postings in a forum from people with the same issue, but otherwise the sequential function feels good and Fanatec sent me a new one. At least for road-cars I don't think that there is any car with manual gearbox that needs the 7th gear in sim-racing, because this is usually the eco-gear for keeping the speed in low revs on the highway, but not for acceleration or topspeed. Otherwise you have dual-clutch or sequential transmissions in cars with more than 6 gears. Some trucks in ETS2/ATS have 14 gears, so at least some guys might want an easier accessible 7th. Otherwise the USB-thing is not part of the shifter and costs another 20 Euro. I had many issues with that.
