Nobody's gonna think ur lying doll. TOOL does 'things' to everyone- with or without their permission. 😉 MJK's name is pronounced like may-nerd. But it's a stage name based on a character from the tv show MASH. His name is actually James Herbert Keenan- he goes by Jim. He also has 3 bands- all uniquely different and all brilliant. TOOL A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. He is definitely a mad genius. MJK's lyrics are always multi layered in meaning- but that's one of the transcendent qualities of art- it's subjective. To understand what the meanings are to him though- it's extremely helpful to have a working knowledge of hermetic principles philosophy math and science. Especially the psychological sciences. Jungian to be overly specific. But luckily- u don't have to have these to simply enjoy the music. Please- IF u would- do 'Eulogy' or 'ÆNIMA' next. U will dig them both I think. I really enjoy ur reactions so far. Ur a sharp kid. Kind of gives me hope for the future- something that is lacking these days. Jmo.

It might blow your mind to find out this song is structured around the Fibonacci sequence. The syllables start with 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. Maynard follows this in different parts of the song. Also, the musical count can be expressed by the Fibonacci sequence as well. You can do a deep dive into this song alone :)
People often mention about the first verse and this part of the sequence. It goes beyond this though.
The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)
This repeats.
Maynard then begins the prechorus with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. There's also the time signatures 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is one of the numbers further along the sequence like you mentioned. The length of the verses are a number in the sequence. The moment he starts singing is at 1:37 which is 1.68 minutes the golden ratio that expresses the spiral when you tile the plane.

You would be hard pressed to find a group that focuses on every note ,every pattern to deliver the highest quality experience. They are different.
No competition intended here. But the only example I can think of that meets the same criteria, is Radiohead. They are to Pink Floyd, what Tool is to Led Zeppelin.
The colors are literally like babies start to see the world. First we only see black and white (dark and light), the first colors we recognize are red and yellow. The other colors come in later.
Please give the whole Tool catalogue a listen and the Tool Army will continue to support your channel. It's life changing music. Much more dense and meaningful than the average band. It's much more than "just a band" a band to many of us actually.

The drums feel like they are coming from the four points of the compass, while laying here with my eyes closed. For a time I felt descending had toppled lateralus, but it has scrambled, scrabbled and clawed it's way back, it is the all time best song ever to be written.
Oh we KNOW you ain’t lyin. That song can literally make my head spin. And I get goosebumps. It’s a joy to watch your journey beginning.
Danny, the drummer, is the GOAT. No joke. It’s like he’s lived a dozen past lives and was a drummer in a different part of the world in each one. Now we are blessed to witness the culmination of aaaaaaalllll of those lives in the drummer he is today.

No bc this band is just that good. It makes you feel. It makes you feel everything all at once you get what you need from it. Every-time you listen to it where you are in life is what you see and what you get from every song. Its beyond music its spirit, mind, body and soul.
Leanr about the Fibonacci sequence. This song was designed around it. His lyric cadence is literally in syllables in order of this mathematical sequencez not inly do the lyrics make perfect sense it is literally flowing along with this sequence. This song is a literal masterpiece.

Some other good introductory songs I'd suggest are "46&2", "Vicarious" or "Sober"... Tool can have some pretty technical music, so starting off with some more 'simple songs' (by their standard) is easier to get your feet wet with their music.

When all the Tool fans tell you to spiral out, this song is why. Also, I see have basketball jerseys in the background. The drummer Danny Carey, is a huge basketball fan as well, it's in the contract that when they play basketball arenas, they have to give him one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Tool fans show up but they can be real douche bags. Be warned. The majority of us are just super happy for another fan in the army and for new TOOL content. Just my opinion but...Lateralus is the best example of them working as a unit. Or Rosetta Stoned. Songs that showcase the talent of the individual members well, in my opinion are: Maynard James Keenn/vocals-The Grudge, Justin Chancellor/bass-Descending, Adam Jones/guitar-7empest. Fight me TOOL army! First listen don't do live or music videos. It can distract from the music. Always have lyrics. I think that's everything. Spiral out homie. Oh. And their bass player is British.
