      @EckhartsLadder your wrong and here is why: 1) your critic of the separatist artillery not being durable is invalid because it is artillery. the point of artillery is to NOT be durable; the point of artillery is to carry a long ranged gun that can use indirect fire methods lobbing high explosive shells and etc. in other words it is meant to give a giant middle finger to the enemy long before the enemy ever actually endangers the artillery and its support teams or the main units ahead of them.
      2) a SPG or self propelled gun should be mobile so it can deliver its punch much faster and be easier to move around
      3) the republic artillery is the ANTITHESIS of the point and being of what an artillery piece is (the one you picked for them anyways). first off it is direct fire; even early gun powder artillery was not direct fire only. this limits the actual punch it has as a artillery piece significantly don't get me wrong it is powerful but not as a artillery piece. it would be more accurate to call it a anti-orbital platform or heavy AA. EVEN THAN HOWEVER the republic "artillery" is not great at this role due to it being direct fire.
      4) for all of these reasons the republic artillery should be LAST no matter how powerful it was/is. it does not fit the role of artillery in any capacity. an the top two artillery pieces should be from the rebel alliance and the CIS with CIS being first.

    Honestly, the Grand Republic Army is one of the best armies in Star Wars. It has a wide variety of troops and vehicles, clear troop and commandstructure, specialized troops etc. But their navy... is utter bullshit to be honest. Their mainstayship is a carrier, they have no real dedicated battlecruiser, battleship, light frigates/corvettes etc. If they would have treated their navy like a real navy, they would have probably won the war.

    Realistically, if your artillery needs heavy armour protection, you're using it wrong. The rebel artillery, probably by virtue of coming from an RTS game that wants units to be balanced (at least until the Forces of corruption expansion came along), is the best actual artillery.
    That said, in most star wars media artillery, and long ranged weapons of any kind really, are being used wrong. So, go nuts with the expensive, hard to transport glorified heavy tanks masquerading as artillery.

    • @adammullarkey4996
      @adammullarkey4996 4 года назад +8

      A lot of real-world self-propelled guns are armoured. That doesn't mean they're not artillery.
      I'm not saying you're wrong - just that you aren't right. Artillery with armour just means that, if it is unfortunate enough to get into close quarters, it can survive long enough to either run away or defend itself. Besides which, you say that artillery which finds itself in close-quarters combat is being used wrong? Even artillery used perfectly can find itself outmanoeuvred occasionally, and when that happened, I'd rather have artillery that can take a hit.

    • @Santisima_Trinidad
      @Santisima_Trinidad 4 года назад

      The rebel artillery fails in one major aspect (well, two, but we'll get their). It has short range. Short range artillery has it's uses, but it's just generally not a particularly good idea, a better one being to make your artillery in such a way it can fire at short range, it just isn't designed specifically for that purpose (the CIS artillery is the only example which could fit that role in this list). Now, if they designed it to be a sort of tank with a higher focus on firepower rather than breakthrough, it having short range would be fine, except it clearly isn't, because it lacks armor and shielding. The empire probably has the best artillery piece out of the lot, it's platform just isn't suited for artillery, and the republic seemingly decided that it would be a good idea to utilize a capital ship weapon for ground battles, which is overkilling the overkill.

  • @XepherTim

    Excellent video as always! I will admit, my first thought for Republic artillery would actually be the AV-7 Antivehicle Cannon, which we see in the Clone Wars show at the Battle of Christophsis. It is a bit more of a traditional mortar-like piece, while your list seems to be using more varied, mobile artillery pieces.
    And as much as I love the SPHA-T, I'm not entirely sure it is capable of arcing it's shots, which of course be a significant downside to any artillery piece, as it would then require a direct line of sight to its target. Wookiepedia(my only source because I'm lazy) states as much. Also apparently the gun had limited charge, and would have to be replaced with a different gun after firing, I suppose that is there downside instead of reloading.
    Personally I think a better choice would have been the SPHA-C, a variant that instead fired concussion missiles, the downside of course being limited ammunition. Although it exists only in text-form in reference books, so might not work as well for the video.
    (derp, forgot you mentioned it in the video :p)
    And while the AT-IC is an interesting idea, I'm not sure it works quite as well in practice. One issues is that, simply judging by the one images we have to work off of, it seems as if the walker would have to face away from the battle/target, so that the Ion Cannon can fire at it, because the remaining body of the walker would get in the way of the cannon. This decreases the ability of the walker to defend itself from closer ranged attacks. Additionally, removing a large amount of the original volume of the walker significantly decreases its ability to be used for its original purpose, transportation, with most of the remaining space likely being needed for power plants due to the large power energy requirements of the Ion Cannon.
    Anyways, these are just my opinions, love your videos, keep up the great work!

    • @XepherTim
      @XepherTim 6 лет назад +8

      Alright searched around a bit more. In the 2003 Clone Wars show, the (presumably) SPHA-Ts fire more traditional turbolaser style projectiles, with some definitely arcing. Although in the Attack of the Clones, the do seem to be more directed energy beam weapons, however the wiki does state they use a heavy turbolaser beam(although a turbolaser beam doesn't doesn't quite fit with our working knowledge of how turbolasers work? idk might just be me). Although the 2003 show isn't canon, this could just be explained as different variations of the base SPHA, which as you mentioned has many canon variations anyways.

    • @TankHunter678
      @TankHunter678 5 лет назад +4

      I think the AT-IC as a platform could work, specifically if you swap out the direct fire ion cannon for a missile system, largely due to how the missile system could be used for either an AA role, or to augment its forward weaponry by firing missiles with thrusters to arc themselves down onto far off targets. One could also replace the ion cannon with a heavy point defense laser turret for helping deal with air targets. In essence while the transportation space is gone it can be made to function as a heavy escort walker. Especially due to that weakness to tow cables from fast speeders.

      Guessing it's be too similar to the Republic one. And now that very effective.
      It would require a lockdown phase like the rebel artillery, but it's far slower and even worse armored.
      The AT-IC while unwieldily, can at least fire while moving or actually withstand blaster fire, increasing chances of survival in case it all goes to hell.

    I like the MPTL, it is most relateable to modern artilery and is very effective in its role, Area Denial. Spotters are additional part of the package, makein this the only vehicle on the list that can actually work alone. It is defenceless, trough...
    The AT-IC not the most usefull weapon, since it is basicly a regular Arty stapped on a AT-AT. It does not benefit from its armour, since most of it is removd, it does not benifit from its hight, since it fires a arc, anyways... A very 'special' design.
    The DDT, while being only experimental, is the propably most usefull out of the batch. Its ammonition is able to destroy enemy forces while keeping the vaulble gear intact. It also got the biggest radius and since it is mountet on a modified AAT, it keeps some of the arms it had.
    SPHA... It is to big, it requires special craft to even reach its destination, its abilety to hit targets in the sweetspot betwen the pointdefence and the Artys reach is nearly nonexistent, because any arc this thing would be able to shot must be increadybly far... And it is so big, one could propably see it from space.
    Its followups, wich got downscaled for a reason, are far more reasonable weapons. The SPAH is the gustav railway gun all over again!

    • @Noah-zz8uw
      @Noah-zz8uw 3 года назад

      Yeah, the MPTL-2a also doesn't lack in firepower at all. Proton torpedos are literally designed to be effective against capital ships and large, heavily fortified targets. Spotter Droids are part of the package as you say. They increase the effective range, and greatly increase accuracy.

      @ВасилийДанилов-у8я 6 лет назад +8

      Alex Mauney it actually has a range of 120 km. And it fires guided munitions,which is pretty rad by MRLS standarts. I wouldn't be surprised if it could fire specialised ammo like ATGM's or AA rockets,or it could hit multiple targets in the same volley

    • @Jfk2Mr
      @Jfk2Mr 6 лет назад +6

      Well, that's a bit surprising, because in this list MPTL is most realistic - artillery need spotters, communications and change positions after few volleys to avoid destruction due to enemy response. Others are just bigger guns on standard chassis (Defoliator an AT-IC) or self propelled fortress (SPHA)

    • @ВасилийДанилов-у8я
      @ВасилийДанилов-у8я 6 лет назад

      Kuba Król Republic has AV7,which were used in the Clone wars toon. They would make much better artillery piece for this list. AI-IC is like a Surmtiger,superheavy assault gun used for attacking bunker lines and not lobbing enemy from afar

    • @Jfk2Mr
      @Jfk2Mr 6 лет назад

      Василий Данилов AT-IC is rather mashup of Archer (Valentine with 17 pounder AT gun) and so-called Flakbus with 88mm AA gun - mediocre in both roles (gun is IMO too powerful and cumbersome for shooting CAS and has too much limited firing arc for land targets). About superiority of AV-7 over SPHA I wrote in my other comment

    As I remember Empire At War, it gave the empire a rather light, dedicated artillery walker with a canon that seemd to be a smaler version of the SPHAs main weapon. I found it to be quite practical if well supported and deplyoed in some numbers. Definitely less odd than an AT-AT with a huge ion gun on its back.

    Interesting would be to see a cost/benefit analysis... An artillery piece carrying a regiment of troops as close protection is, imo, wasting a regiment of troops. How many of the rebel vehicles could you get on one of the unwieldy republic pieces? How much manpower would be used for an equal amount of damage when close support is figured in (Only reasonable to assign some protective forces to the rebel pieces after all).

      Its also going to be cheaper than the other contenders, since they're literally just swapping out the gun on one of their mass-produced battle tanks.
      The manual loading is inconvenient, but its probably easier to manufacture than an automatic loading system.
      Not to mention it still has 2 repeating blaster cannons and 6 torpedo tubes to defend itself with.

    @playableelite5209 6 лет назад +2

    i believe if you used the elite atat in place of the at model you used, Of course that is my opinion based on a tactical analysis without bias of prequels or civil war era. This is also keeping in mind how effective the vehicles are from start to finish in a battle. the elite atat seems to be the most well balanced and practical in a warfare situation. here is a link to the wiki page starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Elite_AT-AT. also for those that are interested in knowing why technology is actually more advanced in the civil war era go to this link. its a somewhat long read but i think you eckharts should really read this. it may help in future videos like this one.www.quora.com/How-come-in-the-Star-Wars-universe-the-technology-is-more-advanced-in-prequels-than-originals

    • @playableelite5209
      @playableelite5209 6 лет назад

      For people who do not want to read what the second link has to offer. It sums up to the fact that in our eyes when we do not know the specs of each vehicle and blaster used. The visual affects are what people have to go on. which is why to someone who only knows the basics, would say that the primary walker of the republic is more powerful that the ATAT. It comes down to what we see instead of the facts. this is also why all the force users in the prequels seen more powerful than those in the original trilogy. and in both old and new cannon and eu. we know that is not the case.

      I'm late as heck, but I doubt that reach could survive a full Zerg invasion. Once ground forces are deployed, the UNSC is probably going to have trouble penetrating Zerg carapace, considering these calcs for Terrn C-14 Gauss rifles: www.reddit.com/r/whowouldwin/comments/8sqzgx/40k_bolter_vs_starcraft_c14_gauss_rifle_devils/, and www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/csdu7n/some_math_on_how_powerful_the_c14_marine_gauss/. If Gauss Rifles are anywhere near that powerful, it's probably going to take several squads to kill a few Zerglings, let alone a Hydralisk or a Roach. The best chance they'd have would be in space, but UNSC point defense systems are probably going to be overrun by swarms of Mutalisks, and Scourge, while Corruptors and Devourers deal the killing blows.

    This video would be a far better showcase for a discussion on what Artillery (or SPGs here) actually even are. The videomaker clearly doesn't even understand what it is, making this video all kinds of wrong.
    The only one that (from what I see as footage) that comes resembles artillery is the DDT, which immediately makes me wonder why the HAG was not here.
    [added]: With exception of the DDT and partially that last one, all these vessels require direct line of sight because their weapons fire in a straight line, on that account alone they fail miserably as artillery.
    I think the videomaker should've researched the subject of what is artillery a hell of a lot better.

      @@DevilYouDont I'm no expert on this topic, but artillery doesn't need to be enormous, or heavily armored, or able to defend itself against anti tank infantry and heavy vehicles for it to fulfill it's intended purpose. Most of these artillery vehicles are going to be be behind allied forces, which means that speed is very good, needing spotters isn't a weakness, and having heavy armor isn't much of a benefit.
      Case in point, the MPTL-2a should probably be the best out of the few vehicles he chose here (I'm pretty sure all of these factions have an alternative example of artillery that could be better). It can move fast, it can deploy and undeploy quickly, it's range and accuracy aren't great alone, but both of those elements can be completely enhanced with a simple spotter droid, and he's wrong about the firepower of the MPTL-2a lacking. Sure it doesn't create enormous explosions in a game meant to be balanced, but remember that proton torpedos by their very design are meant to be anti capital ship weapons. A single MPTL-2a should be able to clear the battlefield with extreme precision and accuracy at a great range, then reposition.

      @@Noah-zz8uw yeah I guess howitzers don’t have armour... the Paris gun from WW2 could move fast but it didn’t have armour or other weapons.

    Is this a reupload? I could’ve sworn it was posted before the 16th. I’ve got the weirdest sense of deja-vu.
    I think picking the one-off walker for the Empire was kinda odd when you could have used the Empire at War imp artillery.

    Dude, thats just my opinion, but your list doesnt make sense. None of your choice is relevant to the topic. For exaple, the at-ic is not an artillery piece. Its a walker, or generally speaking, a vehicle. So are the others (except maybe for the republic one). In the military, both in star wars and in real world, artillery is not the same as vehicle. Sometimes a vehicle can operate as an artillery piece though.
    So in conclusion, what you've jyst said is nice and cool, but has nothing to do. I dont hate it though, the video was nice and informative. But i really think you should take a better choice for each faction next time.

      Alpha Squad It would be way better and more even if he took AV7,J7 and SPMA for Rep,CIS and empire respectively. Defoiler and SPHA are too unwieldy and specialised,and AT-IC is more of an assault gun like STUG than an actual artillery piece

    You can’t even claim you aren’t biased now! You just downright ignored a huge disadvantage to the Republic walker! It *cannot* arc it’s shots! You plainly ignored this!

    EckhartsLadder i'd like to make an important distinction here "artillery" are immobile platforms all the vehicles your talking about are whats called Self Propelled Guns (SPGs) although SW might call them artillery there is a huge difference between the two

    Shouldn't the Republic have those wheel cannons(I belive they are called AV7) from the clone wars instead of that tanks? I think they might be better but still great video!

    Armor is not a necessary factor for artillery. Artillery is meant for indirect fire support so if it's getting hit you're doing something wrong. Speed matters quite a bit so you can move it back and forth as needed but nothing matters more than firepower.
    There is actually a similar design principle with modern tanks, speed and firepower > armour for survivability, the only statistic that matters.
