Why did my new mysteries snails both die on the second day? One the first day they crawled and moved a bit but after that they didn't move and began to smell. Thank you!
For anyone that has an existing tank put any inert filter media you have lying around in, when you set up your next tank you can simply put a piece of that cycled media in or next to your filter, as most poop and uneaten food will flow there, I personally have never had fish die because the piece of old media wasn't enough to detoxify the water, you might wanna do more frequent water changes and gravel vacuuming for the first week though.
Since my parents used to own a LFS, we still have a whole warehouse full of tanks. Despite that fact, I just ordered a white glass nano tank with rounded edges and I blame you entirely. I miss my channa but I'm still grieving and it's probably gonna be a while before I feel up to getting another snakehead, so for now, I'll start project betta. Already looking forward to my new friend.
Hey, I recently discovered your channel after I bought a betta fish and I fell in love with aquascaping and how you set up your tanks. I have a major question and I hope you see this. What is your opinion on the Fluval 5 gallon tank? Anytime I try and feed my Betta the food either sinks or goes away due to the filter being too strong even on the lowest setting, and I also noticed he kinda hugs the filter. The petco clerk even suggested to not use the filter for the tank bc it’s so small, but I feel like it’s a waste of money to even have the tank. Should I return it for another option? Do you suggest I get a 5gal similar to what you have in your “how to” video and then get a attachable filter? If you see this could you please link what you used?!! Thanks so much.
Bettas don't like a strong current. A sponge filter is the best choice or you can super glue some filter media to the discharge of your power filter to break up the flow. You can use a floating feeder ring to place the food to avoid the current and I recommend using tweezers to hold the food (blood worms, flakes, tubifex worms etc) live food is best, frozen is a good second choice. Breeding brine shrimp in a 2 or 3 gallon container is pretty easy and your Betta will love it. Watching a Betta hunt for the 10-15 brine shrimp is very entertaining. If you get another 5 or 10 gallon set it up planted and add guppies or similar small fish and feed them the extra brine shrimp 🦐.
@@ComancheWarrior63 Totally agree on this! And my bettas love to eat from tongs, maybe this would be worth a try? They'll jump for it, so maybe be careful but it's so cute!
@@sneekyalexa2657 It's pretty easy to find tweezers that come with protective rubber tips. The purpose is to avoid injury and they are removed before use. If you leave the protective tips on then they are safe for use in feeding fish. If you are looking for a long pair of tweezers then I suggest searching for stainless steel surgical tweezers. They are available in several lengths and won't rust.
@@ComancheWarrior63 thanks. I think the best option for me is to just return my fluval 5 gallon and then get a rimless 5gallon and then add in a sponge filter like you suggested. I’ll save a ton of money then. But then what should I do about a Lid cap for the tank so he won’t jump out?😩
@@smokinaces8133 cover the surface with floating plants. Pick a variety of plants for the aesthetics. Make sure you pick plants that are small in size. By choosing 2 or 3 varieties you can get a very picturesque scene as some plants will have longer roots, you have a variety of leaf shape and slight variation of color. This will also be beneficial because the Betta will often come close to the surface to look for food. The surface vegetation is a visual clue for the Betta or any other fish of the location of the surface and usually prevents the fish from leaping out of the tank. You can also get a clear cover with spacers so there is a gap between the tank and cover. This allows good air circulation but water may condense on the cover if the water is several degrees warmer than the air temperature. Another option is to cover the tank with a nylon or plastic screen. I would even recommend, with financial consideration, that you consider upgrading to a 10 gallon or possibly even a 20 gallon long. This allows you to have additional livestock such as shrimp, guppies (no more than 10), one of the very tiny loaches, small freshwater crab, small snails, more land mass for aqua scaping (plants, stone, wood). Your Betta may decide to eat the shrimp, snails and baby guppies but that's very good food and what they would do in a natural habitat. A dense carpet of short aquatic ground cover will help with predation. You should also consider a resting place for your Betta. There are a variety of available options such as a ledge that attaches with a suction cup. If you have tall background plants you can get an artificial "cave", also suction cup, that you can hide in the vegetation. Or my way, super glue several lightweight stones (pumice stone, slate, shale and corral) together and then attach it to the tank using aquarium safe silicone.
I have some co2 capsules to whipp cream laying arround. I just don't put cream in thr creamer and spray a bit of the gas in the direction of my sponge filter pump once a day. It doesn't get much simpler than that I am still experimenting with it, so i would not recommend to do this without care
And just to clarify the beneficial bacteria does not live inside of the tank water it lives on surfaces so adding the water will only add nitrates which may have tracked the bacteria but will just add to the nitrate level of your fish tank overall and ultimately bad for the fish
The betta video is why I’m here. Also Chris, I am getting a filter that has a cartridge with a hole for water flow. If I switch it for a sponge instead of the cartridge should I cut a hole in it as well?
You can play around with it, see if it makes the flow of the filter different if you switch it to a sponge, and if it does, cut the same sized hole or until it matches the normal filtration speed with the cartridge :)
I always wonder though, why people put soooooo much hardscape and elevated substrate in. the amount here would easily make that 5 gallon tank only hold 2.5 - 3 gallons of water, not to mention limiting the area of free swim space. So aren't you effectively creating a tank that is too small? It's a real questions, I'm not being a smart alec, I've always wondered this as so many fish keepers crowd so dang much hardscape and bring the substrate up so high in the back...
You said that you could put existing fish tank water into a tank start the cycle what might help start it putting used filter media in there is way more useful
What are your thoughts on betta sorority tanks? I am thinking of making one eventually but I know that people are pretty 50/50 when it comes to sororities.
I did a sorority with 12 females in a 70 gal heavily planted tank and one by one they all died. I kept getting new ones and couldn’t figure out why they were all dying……but eventually there was just one left…the most dominant one. I suspect they all died from stress from the dominant girl punking them 24/7 (even with 70 gallons of space and a bazillion places to hide)…and would not do it again, or recommend it. In the end, I just felt guilty for trying something because I thought it would be pretty, but was not ideal for the fish. 💔
