In this video, we assess whether replacing a PS5's HDMI port at home is feasible and whether it's worth all the hassle. What could go wrong...?
** Please note that some of the points made in this video are for dramatic effect such as " millions die due to HDMI failure, and millions more die of heart attacks when they ask repair shops how much they charge to fix the issue". The real number is likely in the thousands. **

Hello everyone, good viewing🐼
I actually dont like paperlike... sorry man

Yo phone repair girl you’re the best dude ever you make super cool videos
Please giveaway a ps5 to me
Not even kidding when I say I spent over 12 hours fixing this thing. Micro soldering is no joke. Shoutout Northridgefix for the amazing tutorial videos, expect more content like this in the future!
Oof
Its hard even for starters
F
@@DababySellz definitely is a skill issue
@@PhoneRepairGuruhe is right tho it only takes me 2 to 3 hours of micro soldering for old tech like ps2 fats n stuff.
This is definitely ambitious, watched a repair on this issue not so long ago and it looked difficult. I'll finish watching the video now to see how you did
Update: unfortunate some mini components came off but you gave it a really good go. Look forward to seeing future micro soldering attempts
@@Lordhitchy Micro Soldering is actually pretty easy if you have good hand skills just buying the right components would do the job IDK about others but I've been soldering for the past 9 years and I still mess things up but when things work it'll be a game changer because you'll be able to buy car ECU's and fix em for a good profit especially german cars.
As someone who's been doing soldering and micros soldering for over 10 years you did a really good job, that retrace looked amazing. And I'm sure you're ready for the more stuff!
That means a lot thank you!
@@PhoneRepairGuru looking back at your older micro solder attempts, you really have improved quite alot, im pretty sure you couldve got this ps5 working if there wasnt a billion other things wrong with it as well... trust me keep practicing and youll get so much better.
Wasn’t expecting another long format video so soon. Really love these ones
trying to get more consistent with these :)
@@PhoneRepairGuruThat’s great! It’s sad that repair of this PS5 failed tho.
Also at 7:17, why couldn’t you just replace the boards? Wouldn’t donor board work as a replacement?
@@shadow.aa1it had its own issues. Technically yes but I really wanted to get the original board working
@@PhoneRepairGuru Oh I see. I misunderstood the “donor” board. I thought that it was a completely functional board and you used it to fix the broken one🤦🏻♀️ My thought process sometimes is deadly. Thanks for the answer
I've replaced a fair bit of HDMI and other connectors from several devices.
If I can give you some tips: use aluminium or kapton tape to cover the surrounding components if you are new to the game.
This will effectively shield the other components or close connectors from overheating and help you direct the heat towards the faulty component.
Low melt solder is not needed really, just have good (lead) solder and add this.
Don't overheat your components so you don't damage plastics, but use sufficiant heat to get the solder melding without spending too much time doing it.
Take some other broken boards to practice desoldering, you will be amazed how fast you will master this.
You have all the right gear to do so, just put in some hours of practice.
I charge 105 bucks for these. It takes some time to master them. But once you do enough of them you'll be able to disassemble them replace that HDMI port and reassemble them in no time. Takes me a little bit under an hour to do each one.
Can i mail in my ps5?
Are you close to Shreveport lol
Where are you located?
@@dmichele84ify Stevensville MD
@Cory21021 idk. I'm in Stevensville MD
5:17 you can see that wire is almost touching the other solder pad! Thats probably causing the issue
thats what i was thinking about
I redid the trace many times after that. Ruled it out, it wasn’t the problem
@@PhoneRepairGuru hmmm what could it be
@PhoneRepairGuru Check those components around HDMI with a multimeter (or other means), the cap at 7:27 looked weird imo.
Multimeter is your best briend, probably the HDMI IC Chip got shorted also, or the filters are blow up.
Maybe a small soldering iron like a C210 or T30 would make it easy also.
But for a beginner job that was pretty clean, everyone starts like that, spending over 10 hours on one device that didnt even got fixed, but the experience comes quickly.
Thanks! I used the multimeter to check the hdmi encoder but there was no evidence it was shorted.I replaced it anyway but still the same issue. Hopefully in the future I'll know from experience what the issue is
You’re getting better and better with your work. I’m pretty sure that in future you’ll be able to swap microchips on phones motherboards! Good luck PRG, I’m your huge fan!
Thank you! It's a work in progress for sure
if there are no missing pins u can do this with any heat gun and some flux
u did a amazing job tho idk why it wouldnt work there has to be something somewhere else
Love the long form videos, keep it up 👍
Guy is so optimistic
Gotta be lol
I love your channel ❤ you have honest videos. no bluff.
0:04 PLAINROCK🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love your video Bro, 💓❤❤❤❤💕❤❤💓
happy to watch it
Love your sense of humor throughout! Keep them coming!
i do 15 to 20 of these a week and for someone who has not done this before you did great
Hey, just check diode values, fix it and HDMI will work again! And be more relaxed during soldering. But great job! Nice to see next guy who makes this kind of repairs :)
I just managed to repair one of these HDMI ports the other day, it was my first successful soldering job!
The plastic part of the HDMI had been pushed in, and the pins had been cleanly sheared off. Luckily it had no ripped pads. I have a hot air gun and soldering pen (that i can't put tin on, it just won't stick to the tip). And the repair went pretty well. I also had to resolder the little capacitor next to the port, it's so close and it's tiny.
I don't have a microscope, so this is pretty much the limit in terms of scale, any smaller and it gets hard to see what I'm doing.
Torx is great. The screwdriver and screw head are so snug and tight it's just MMMMM!! SO good!
Micro soldering scares me. I did a bunch of practice on dual shock 4 controllers by replacing the analog stick that had drift and that hate me tense. In the end I could never really get the drift to go away.
Unfortunately all non-magnetic sticks get drift within a thousand hours or so. If you game a lot, they're basically disposable. Also, aftermarket sticks are all trash. I've bought dozens that came, sealed, with drift. Try to use OEM parts where possible, or similar parts through vendors like ifixit.
Would it have been better to tin the hdmi port; tin the pads and solder the hdmi port?
Then you could go on with the trace repair and mask if ater you have made a secure connection.
(I remember when I asked you about how to learn microsoldering, I've been doing it for 6 months now, thanks !)
Very enlightening video, despite the failure. Certainly worthed the time / money spent.
I'm going to make my friends ps5 this weekend he says that the port is completely trasjed so he is sure it's the port but this will be my first time doing this repair. I work alot with the soldering iron and hot air but never a hdmi port so I'm very excited!
I did it bro 😊 i took one all apart , in bent the broken on back in place in soldered it togther carefully in it worked 😊
2:50 "Now we can move the body aside"💀💀💀💀💀💀
A walk in the park for Tronics fix.
One of the best phone repairer i have come across with😂❤❤❤❤
well done. what is your miroscope?? and are you using lenz??
@PhoneRepairGuru use some Kapton tape around the HDMI port to prevent knocking components off the board!
To make it easier, you can get solder pads, that can solder on one side and use UV mask on the other, so that it is fixed in place and it is mostly like factory pad :)
Hey PRG,
Didn't you say that your gonna upload a video of the Vision pro parts replacing?
When will it get uploaded :) ?
God bless you PRG your my favorite phone repair guy. Thanks for inspiring me!
My pleasure!
Wylie makes ready to go solder pads with a tail so you can solder it to a trace. They have different sizes for the pad themselves
Hey man, which battery brand would you recommend for replacement for 12 Mini?
I love the microsoldering videos. Definitely would love to see more!
I just finished one of these today for a customer. He had 4 ripped pads and a very mangled port. I got it up and running first try and was happy with the repair. It ran for 6 hours without a glitch. As soon as he got it home. Screen flickering. Needless to say I'm getting it back tomorrow. These playstations HDMI ports are extremely delicate and hard to do even if you have done hundreds like me.
Thumbnail (the one containing “Broken HDMI”) scared me a little because I once did a small fix on my ps5’s hdmi when it ended up being a bit looser than it should have been.
Also i did happen to notice Plainrock at the start of the video 😂
Hey @PhoneRepairGuru I have question do you remember the techrax video with the 6s? That your comment send it over ? What about it?
You channel makes me want to work at a shop like this :D
I enjoy HDMI port repair. I have ubsc on Nintendo switches with the hidden pads.
Im an EE and i wont even do this haha great video for trying man. Hdmi are high speed ports so the pads and its surrounding components matters a lot, am surprised its the most common issue our beloved ps5 has.
I don’t know if it’s still the case, but with the iPhone XS Max I had my Lightning Port serialized so Apple CarPlay simply would not work after swapping my board to a donor phone.
Micro soldering is a great technical skill
You can if you know what your doing and have a hot air station but if you dont know what you are doing and are trying to do it to with a soldering iron youll have a bad time .. hot air is the only way to do a hdmi port or even analog stick swaps on the controllers
Hey I’m wondering if I should get my phone checked out because it is reaching 20-30 degrees sometimes even 40
love your vids !
Thank. yousm!
Not into repairs that much but your videos are just amazing.
Cool that you showed a video not being able to finish a job...alot of techs make this seem easier than it really is..cheers brother
See if you can make the necessary repairs to the donor board and if swap it
I can understand that pain. I converted my redmi airdots from micro usb to type c after 5 hours and I forgot them on airport while travelling 😭
1:29 DANKPODS REFERENCE
That or they're two sides of the same tim tam
nugget
The HDMI IC (The Panasonic one) could be faulty too
Hey man. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 with a broken screen(touch not working either). I got an adapter from USB-C to HDMI and usb to connect wireless keyboard and mouse but for some reason I didn't have the same pattern as my new phone(thought I had the same one). Can you recommend me an app or something to remove or change the pattern(lock screen) without losing my data, saw a lot of programs but they are saying that they will erase all data.
You are amazing and entertaining. Somedays I wish I was you😊
Bro's dedication is next level 🤯
0:25 as someone who has soldering skills I can confirm this is how you hold it if you want to get 3rd degree burns.
Hi, Can we put swap the existing 2800 mah battery with new model 4000 mah battery in moto razor 5g ?
A single ripped pad is "bad" for this guy. Man, its fantastic! Never seen such a meesed up port with ONLY ONE bad pad!!
"They went all out with the cooling" is that why I see a lot of them get returned either for HDMI issues or because of overheating.
4:30 Massive ground plane in the PCB: "Nice soldering iron you have there. Would be a shame if someone wicked all it's heat away."
Phone repair guru oiled up🙏
top comment right here
Try and go back to the pins make sure that they don't touch each other and that the pins are making proper contact with the pads. I have done a few ps5 hdmi ports and they are not that diffucult takes me just a few minutes. You can also 'flood' the anker points with solder to make sure that the port isn't going anywhere. If you are willing to sell the ps5 let me know.
You should've coiled more wire to the missing spot then apply UV glue all over it then scratch the soldering joint and better use the hot air gun with the solder paste.
@PhoneRepairGuru I've replaced probably close to 100 of these (near Toronto). There is definitely a better method to doing this but you didn't do too bad.
Try to to clean the motherboard snd if that doesnt work try to replace thermal paste and if that doesnt work get a brand new motherboard from ps5 and replace it and reapply thermal paste
man when I tell you I tried everything, I even reballed and replaced the panasonic chip at one point, also re did the trace a few times. I think this specific ps5 has other issues
You need to replace all filters and the transmitter (the blach chip near hdmi port) because the previous solder job shorted the solder lines. Your repaired trace also looks very bad. You need to use proper trace repair pads instead of 0.01mm wire
did you check if the light goes to white light if not then you have a probleme else where (southbridge or hdmi chip .....) try also resoldering each and every pin with the soldering iron and check for continuaty whit multimeter for each pin
if a ground pad is ripped off the HDMI cable could just be replaced and the output stuck on 1080P resolution as theirs tons of ground on HDMI
If you can spare the cash, I'd really recommend an iron made for micro/pico soldering. An active Weller pen with replaceable 0.2 or 0.1mm tips will go a LONG way.
Hi phone repair guru, I have been watching you're videos for a long time and I am nine years old and I have fixed a few iPhones in the past and I have an iPhone 4s I have replaced the battery in it the other day but when you plug it in via the 30pin cable it boot loops and then turns on a few minutes later the iDevice turns on and when you use a it for a while (maybe 6 minutes) it boot loops again and the battery percentage changes
Should send it to Alpha repairs in Ontario. Will make it like new ✨️
i don't know if this will work but you can try a USB to HDMI if the HDMI won't work(i've already tried it on my computer and it works ok but i don't know if it'll work on the PS5)
My ps5 is my baby! Had it 2 years now and still looks like new. I really do need an ssd already.
You should use heat tape to protect those components from the heat gun while you're fixing the HDMI port
I think this calls for a @Tronicsfix collab! Please make a collab to see if he can fix it
My PS has a similar problem out of the box but they're saying it can't be repaired and refusing to replace it
Did you ever figure out what was fully wrong with it? This stuff is intriguing.
I thought you said the vision pro video was next my guy
😂 love that doctor evil part
Hey I’m out here revealing trade secrets but we always replace the hdmi ic with the port itself 😉
Change the Panasonic ic chip that does the HDMI output.
Microsolder newbie here whos done about 4 PS5 HDMIs looks like the HDMI encoder might need to be replaced if that chip shorted it. its the chip behind the HDMI
Hey! I actually tried that with no luck
u should watch north ridge fix to have tips on how to micro solder
Guru i need the video fo transfering from one apple visoin to another can i know when i can watch i really want this i am from poland so sorry if my english is not good
PRG: if I can repair this then maybe you can too.
Me: I really don't think so
Watch North Ridge Fix.
It‘s crazy how fast he fix devices
you should solder pins
looks like the hdmi encoder chip could be the next possible issue
0:12 man that movie was a comedy gold😅 might just watch again tonight 😅
PhoneRepairGru my Dad is in the military for the Army for communications so fixing radios and he’s going to fix my ps5 hdmi port and I’m fed up with this ps5 and he’s going to fix it over the summer I can’t wait to get myn repaired correctly and by someone that actually has to fix on like mother boards
you might need to touch up the pin that got ripped off with the iron and flux maybe? the hot air may not have given a good connection with the jumper.
also for checking whether the pins are soldered correctly, you might find nudging the pins with a little more force, just enough where it wont rip the pads but any loose pins will still budge (you know which one isnt connected then)
Appreciate the tips! I did, the hdmi was definitely making a solid connection
ok , it was worth a try :)
Can you help me my phone when I put it to charge it doesn't charge but when I flip it it charge
yooo he featured plainrock’s ps5 destruction, +rep!
Micro soldering and ribbon cables are the arch nemesis for diy repair 😢some people with good soldering skill can do whole lot of repair but ribbon cables, man. Since they're designed specifically for that particular device, if you break one in "obsolete" device there's no way (to my knowledge) to recover from...like my broken iPod touch 3rd gen digitizer
one time… i had to solder a 2ds backlight cable straight to the pads because the connector broke. no spares available. 2ds works today, will be a pain to disassemble if it breaks again tho lmao
The title is personal
Awesome content, Definitely earned my sub. Btw how do people break Hdmi ports? They just shove in their hdmis YOLO style? Lol
I’m thinking of buying one and fixing but tbh I can’t pull this off
The wire you attached clearly short-circuits to the next pin, I think that's the problem.
