Seen exactly these on N42 & N46. The chain tensioner bolt might give you a small leak if the washer is wrecked but if it comes loose the it can produce a crazy flow that will empty the engine! The valvetronic motor gasket is another leak point.

Just done all of these on my bmw.
Another one which I found was leaking and needed the seal and gasket replacing was the eccentric shaft sensor.
Its next to the oil cap under the plastic cover.
When oil leaks into the plug your rev counter will soon jump about and eventually go into reduced power mode.
The seal and gasket on cost me £6 from bmw and took 10 minutes to replace.

These engines 46 and 46T are prone to oil leaks and at the same time known for high oil consumption. My E90 leaked the oil from all possible places, including Valve Cover, Oil Pan, Camshaft sensor both intake and exhaust, vanos sensors, Oil filter housing, crankshaft as well as Oil pressure sensor underneath. Despite of no oil leak now, every 5K KM i need to add at least 500ml of engine oil to these engine (and yes there is no leak inside, no black or blue smoke on the exhaust)..

Great video. I only had my daughters 2007 320i up on a hoist tonight after degreasing it a while back. I finally snuck in some hoist time from a friend and it’s looking like it’s the part you said was on the back of the head. From underneath looking up I can see some oil on the lower part of that mystery part.
I call it a mystery part because I’m an electrical fitter not mechanic.🤷‍♂️
There was some oil on the sump gasket bolts and gasket, on the driver (lower) side of the engine. It still could be coming from that part above so I wanted to look into it first.
I’d love any additional info on that part if you (or anyone else) has it?
Is it easier enough to get to from above, is it a gasket ( I think you called it an O ring in the video🤔
Any help will be greatly received👍

Hi Mark, just a quick question, you mentioned that oil could leak on that big silver bolt under coolant pipe to the block, strange enough my e90 320i N46, 2011 model has coolant leak ing out from that bolt. Any suggestions on that as I initially thought that the coolant leak was from that silver covered coolant pipe and replaced with new one and then saw it's actually leak on that big bolt. Is coolant supposed to leak from there? I am worried now as you mentioned on video that oil leaks from there. Is it possible to just get a new bolt rather as my one looks worn out?

    • @Marksreviewsandtutorials
