    Cyan's swordtech is good when he is paired up with Sabin.
    Sabin's Fire Dance has the longest animation, which buys Cyan the time needed to charge up the meter.
    Though I usually only charge it to 4, the quatro strike.

      Or just have Cyan go last as everyone else unleashes their spells or moves if he uses his sword tech.
      Although when you pump him upto lvl90 with at least 20-30 levels of +1 speed, vigor, etc... quadra slam is better than quadra slice due to damage cap 'n all that.

    There seems to be some misconception on how the charge up works in pixel remaster. In the SNES you have the bar and have to wait. In the pixel remaster you can choose right away, but the higher level sword techs have a charge up time after the selection. Both still charge up, just in different ways.

    • @Chadius
      @Chadius 7 месяцев назад +12

      The biggest difference being (in the 2014 mobile port & Pixel Remaster) that the rest of the party can act while Cyan is charging. In earlier versions the party has to wait for Cyan to charge up.

    • @Odbarc
      @Odbarc 7 месяцев назад +6

      In the SNES version the other characters had to wait for Cyan to finish and everyone would have to wait. Exceptions if they were using Dance, Rage or Umaro. A fair strategy would be to party Cyan with Gau, Mog, Gogo or Umaro for that reason.

    The Quick spell essentially negates Bushido's drawback, as the charge time doesn't matter because everyone else is frozen in time anyway. I wonder how this list would be, if Quick entered the math... Tempest would probably be first, obviously.

    • @veghesther3204
      @veghesther3204 7 месяцев назад +5

      Even with the Quick spell Cyan is better off doing 2x 5000 to 9999 Ultima spells even at lv 99 so Sword Tech still SUCKS and on the PIXEL version despite NOT choosing the Sword Techs from a lv 1 to lv 8 meter the skills still have a take forever charge up time that I still killed all the non bosses at lv 99 even before the lv 4 or lv 7 ones go into effect.
      So Sword Techs are still worthless AFTER the Floating Continent besides using the lv 1 on to kill Cactuars with Cyan in the party.

    • @MrVariant
      @MrVariant 7 месяцев назад +2

      @veghesther3204 I just use oblivion to instakill regular enemies as Cyan can't even equip the OP ragnarok sword lol he is katanas only similar to ff5 mystic knight and fft holy sword bs not working with katanas. Boost helps a ton let alone cast slowga.
      Thanks for the quick spell info (it also works on fft mime's targeting themselves to get an extra turn to move and align to hit with normal class abilities and the caster goes again to be copied) as I generally dismissed Cyan especially when he would take up the menu doing bushido. Edgar's Chainsaw autokill is way better, especially as undead in pixel remaster don't regenerate.

    On the SNES I would pair Cyan up with members with long turns. Like Terra (Gem Box) and Locke/Celes (Offering+Genji Glove). If Terra is doublecasting something like Ultima or Pearl I can immediately shuffle the turn order to Cyan and start charging Tempest. Terra's casting time for both spells is usually enough of a delay to charge Cyan most-all the way up to 7. Having Dragoon Horn Mog as the 4th character landing 5 hits+proc with the Pearl Lance will give you ample time to charge as well.

      Using characters with auto-attacks like Gau, Mog, Gogo, Umaro, or a berserked default attack user (say Fixed Dice Setzer) means the charge time won't prevent them from acting.
      I usually play with no magicites. That doesn't make Cyan GOOD, though. I just love to use Gau.

    • @takigan
      @takigan 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@InsanityForce
      The advantage with Locke Celes and Terra and Dragoon Horn'd characters though is that their extensive attacks stops the enemies' ATB bars once they've filled whereas the auto-battle characters keep cycling. It doesn't stop the enemy from queuing their attack before Cyan finishes charging--so the enemy will still go before Cyan--but it keeps the enemy from building up more ATB and cycling more attacks while Cyan charges because they still have to wait for Terra/Locke/Celes to finish.

    You can actually synergize an entire party around Cyan. All you need is Celes for her Runic ability, Edgar in the Dragoon build(Jump Boots, Holy Lance, and that other relic that increases attacks and jumps), and Gau with a good Rage(though it's a pain to get what you want in a timely manner). Celes can block most magic, Edgar with his jumps works well with Cyan's Bushido gauge, and Gau of course acts on his own once the rage you want is activated.

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil 7 месяцев назад +1

      the problem with this list is that he doesn't really choose which version he reviews and we get a weird mish-mash of ideas. In the original game the charging is so long that #6 and #7 shouldn't be put higher than #1 unless you use them with Quick, while on the PR, since the charge time is the same for all abilities, #4 shouldn't be higher than #7. in the PR, #2 should also be very low because it's crap. My conclusion : this video makes no sense.

    I think you need to separate the list by game versions as the strategy would differ between the two. On the SNES, not only do you have the slow charge but if you are charging up to 7 or 8 then that means you cannot use any of your other party members in battle and I do believe the enemy still gets to act while you charge. This doesn't matter in the Pixel Remaster as the charge time only affects Cyan.

    My opinions of the Swordtechs;
    [1] Replaces Attack for most of the game and gives you ignores defense.
    [2] When alone (like your first fight) is even better but those situations aren't really likely. Without bug exploits, easy to ignore the whole game.
    [3] This can have two major benefits; In low level games high HP enemies can take significantly more damage than other attacks can provide but also it tells you if an enemy can be one shot with Death, Odin, X-zone and really any other instant death attacks.
    [4] Having four hits can be nice early on. If you have Gau and Celes waiting with her Runic, this could be an excellent move to start charging up after your 4th members command is input.
    [5] Spammable to keep yourself at full health and/or mana
    [6] There's only one enemy formation I like using this on (mostly for safety in a low level game) but it's good for hitting formations with bigger numbers (5~6) or vulnerable to stop.
    [7] Use Quick and then this twice can kill the final boss with enough Vigor. The charge up generally isn't worth the damage and is my least used out of all the sword techs. Exception would likely be made for the Pixel remake but I generally played SNES version.
    [8] You mentioned it bypasses the on-death moves which proves to be more valuable as you get later into the game (where you're more likely to have the move as well).
    If you have Vanish, Float Exp. Egg and fight Tumbleweed there's nothing anything can do to hurt you, exp. is almost as good as Tyrannosaur's.
    PS1 port is kind of horrible with the delay in combat but you can use a Game Shark for it which is better than Game Genie if you have that and like to cheat.
    GBA version is also great but it removed the Y button change character and kept the X button change character which I don't prefer as my only real complaint. (Lack of buttons being the issue).

    Here's a fun thing I've been meaning to try with Retort (Sky?)! Give Cyan the True Knight/Knight's Code, which lets him cover allies with low HP, and have him use Retort. Keep all the other members at critical HP, so that Cyan will consistently cover and counter, and all the other party members can have chances to do their critical attacks.

  • @valiantparagonvideos2383
    @valiantparagonvideos2383 6 месяцев назад +1

    My only real criticism this time would be that I would move Dispatch up to 2 or 1. Taking 4 over 7 is the right impulse, as it takes so long to charge Tempest that you basically could get two 4's in by the time it goes off. But at least int eh meter versions (havne't gotten to PR yet) DIspatch has no charge time and just does a bunch of extra damage. It's usually all you actually need and is the bulk of Cyan's utility. It at least lets him keep up with Edgar and Sabin for a while, even if the Figaro bros are ultimately just better.

    The best part about cyan in the late game if level him to 110 in vigor, is the fact that he doesn't need the sky render to hit for max damage (giving you 2 end game spears to make edgar and mog dragoons so they can do the pogo stick thing if you want) . 4. No Merit Award. Self-explanatory and I'm not sure if Illumina or Ultima Weapon enable runic and swdtech.
    When Gogo is the only party member Mimic copies the last move you use. So if you charge up a swdtech and Mimic it, you can use it with no charge up until you switch to another Swdtech. You have heals and damage built in but it plays very fun and different to a regular play-thru. So bosses you have to brute force swapping heals and quarda-slam.
    I have completed this challenge up to Kefka on the android version. FF6 and Chrono Trigger are my favorite games of all time so I like challenges like these when I replay the game. I've always thought it would be a fun challenge to give someone else And I'm thinking about replaying it myself And Actually beating kefka with it.
    Juat wanted to share, feel free to give it a shot.
    Edit: forgot to mention, you can cheat for Cyan's dream to get all swdtech akills unlocked. It is damn near impossible to do it with just Gogo because of Wrexsoul.
    Also for party splits like Phoenix Cave and Kefka's tower you can just do one side with Gogo, exit, and do another side with Gogo and have moogle charm on the other party. Kefka's tower has alot of resets with the 3rd party but you can jusy deck someone out to survive and run from all battles (if possible).

    i feeeel like his mechanic is lacking (obviously) i think it needed some kind of bonus to him DURING the charge time. like, a 'trap' that would trigger if he is attacked during the charge. i think it should be like you are trying to 'predict' the enemy behaviour. Sort of like Celes' "runic", you are predicting a magic attack that you nullify and absorb. basically, every bushido should have some kind of behaviour like 'Retort'. setting traps is so satisfying and it makes it feel like hes actually doing samurai sht. even boosting his attack if he gets hit during his charge time would make the longer charge time beneficial.

    Pixel Remaster made a huge buff to Cyan, since it no longer wastes your other characters' turns.
    Flurry has a charge time but does 2-3 times the damage other characters do in a single action throughout most of the game, well worth the wait. The exception is Edgar, who is just an overpowered character, especially if you're avoiding leveling up your characters. Bushido does more DPS than Blitz, but Blitz is more versatile.
    If you have high stats, Flurry outclasses both Blitz and Tool since it can bypass the 9999 cap. Master Scroll and effective use of Genji Glove and Ultima Weapon will outclass Flurry but those are limited equipments.

    if you could set the level when his turn came up and then control the other characters in combat I wouldn't mind using most of his higher techs.. but that you have to literally wait and let the enemies wail on the entire party while you're waiting makes this ability stupid. Also, 'retort' is good if you give him the relic that makes him protect others as retort does a huge amount of damage.
    anyway, he's kind of a useless character. I know upping his speed helps with the charging but this is so late game.. cyan is almost a useless character.

  • @GuiltyKit
    @GuiltyKit 7 месяцев назад

    I think my biggest problem with most special abilities in FF VI is how many of them just become not worth the action economy of turn based games, when you could just be using a super busted Attack command powered by relics, or just having everyone bomb the enemies into the stone age with Ultima, or what not. Same problem I have with the majority of the moves added in the fan-made FF1 Renaissance. A whole lot of "why would I use this over just Attack" with some exceptions. It's really, really hard to balance this kind of thing.
    Especially when the creators have to make a game where they don't know if the player will actually go get all the optional, best relics or espers, or how much they'll grind.

      @GuiltyKit 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@Raizhen010 I mean yeah, but you can do that in any game, short of a challenge that literally makes the game impossible. Take the Crissaegrim in SotN for example. Yeah you could "just not use it", but its existence takes up a drop that could have been there that wasn't ultra-busted.
      I just prefer the way Valkyrie Profile did it, where all the super broken characters and items were exclusively post-game, and could only be used in the challenging post-game secret dungeon. That way you got to have all the crazy power, but only within an environment where it made sense, after the main game was done.

    • @Raizhen010

      @@GuiltyKit Meh, I like havin super powerful ways to become overpowered. Just played Star Ocean Second Story R and I wouldn't want the crafting systems removed or relegated to post game. Yeah, I can make weapons that have over a thousand attack power before I leave the first continent, but I like it that way. It's an option I have and that's all it is. An option. FFVI allows me so many options to play the game. Using things like the unique skill command each character has, using super powerful magic, setting up dual wielding attackers, using cool setups like dual tempests for double wind slash. I wouldn't want those things removed just because they're too powerful. Same way I wouldn't want Materia neutered in Final Fantasy VII, or orbments being neutered in Trails.

    • @GuiltyKit

    • @Raizhen010
      @Raizhen010 6 месяцев назад

      @@GuiltyKit I have no issues with an easy mode being included, but if someone wants to either use a guide to break a game or just figures out how to use the mechanics to become overpowered with little effort, I don't see how that's ruining the balance for other people. You don't have to teach everyone magic in FFVI nor do you have to abuse the crafting system in Star Ocean games. They are simply options for the player to explore. Most games that are so finely tuned tend to have very little options for the player. A hard mode option would be better imo, which would force the player to use the overpowered mechanics. Universe in Star Ocean Second Story R expects you to abuse crafting just like Nightmare in Trails expects you to fully abuse the orbment system optimally.

    Before I watch I'll post my ranking. Let's see how they line up.
    1. Bushido 4 (SNES Quadra Slam) - The charge up time is easy to sneak if you let others attack first. 4 hits, slightly reduced damage compared to attacking once, but it totals more damage. Iffy in speedruns as it takes way longer than just attacking, but it's old reliable.
    2. Bushido 1, Fang (SNES Dispatch) - Basically no charge time on SNES, just mash A. Ignores Defense. Don't forget it!
    3. Bushido 6 (SNES Stunner) - Cyan's magic power sucks, but the chance to stop is too good to pass up. It's also an AoE and non elemental so there's no chance of hitting the wrong target. Saved me too many times against Demon/Poltergeist and Statue of the Gods Tier 2's Hit.
    4. Bushido 7 (SNES Quadra Slice) - Well worth the charge time. Ignores defense leading to massive damage. Takes a while to unlock. 4 random targets but the damage is way more than attacking.
    5. Bushido 5, Dragon (SNES Empowerer) - Cyan's magic power sucks but it's an easy way to refill his MP without wasting items. Low damage.
    6. Bushido 3 (SNES Slash) - If the enemy is vulnerable to Instant Death this bushido will cut their HP in half (up to 9999 damage) and inflict Sap. It's a good way to fight chunky enemies and peek at their remaining HP. Charge time is basically nonexistent.
    7. Bushido 8, Oblivion (SNES Cleave) - If the enemy is vulnerable to Instant Death they die. It's also an AoE. It's also the most accurate Instant Death attack. But it takes so long to charge the rest of the team could have killed them normally. It also unlocks way too late. It's good for the first two tier of the Statue of the Gods where one of the arms and Tools/Machine are vulnerable.
    8. Bushido 2 (SNES Retort) - It's a counter attack and Cyan hits as hard as he would casting Flare. It's also non elemental magic for some reason, and Cyan's magic sucks. It's good during the intro fight because he's the only target but after that you're throwing your turn away. Just use Bushido 1 or 4 already.

    This biggest problem here is Cyan himself: he's objectively one of the worst characters in the game. A strength-based character whose special move completely outclasses his fight command, and they all have fixed battle power with no regard to his weapon. Cyan hangs out in the back row for the entire game using the same weapon he starts with spamming Fang and Flurry. His most powerful Bushidos aren't worth the lifetime is takes to charge them, and the ones with short charge times are all outclassed by other abilities and spells. The best strategy with Cyan, like all the other characters, is to just turn him into an Ultima factory. He still does more damage that way overall despite his abysmal magic.
    I love FF6 to death, but over the past 10 years or so, I've realized that the game isn't really designed that well. Aside from the atrocious amount of bugs, the characters are really unbalanced, they can all equip any esper and learn any spells, and they all move towards the same thing in battle if you want to maximize damage (Ultima spam). This really makes me appreciate efforts like the Brave New World hack which, in my opinion, makes the game the way it ought to be.

    Ehhhh, I don't get Empowerer before Floating Continent, and while it's niche I wouldn't say it's actually BAD or useless, certainly not for the time it takes to charge up. Slash is more junky. Cleave is absolutely 3rd worst. It can instant Game Over you if you're really dumb about it. After that it's all good. In no way, shape or form, am I at Level 15 for Narshe.

    Cyan, a manchild? In a game with a guy like Edgar?? And Gua, the litteral man-child?
    Cyan is like, the third most serious character after Celes and shadow, whos personalities are 'serious woman' and 'serious man'.
    Cyan faces his inner demons, his fear of technology, and his lack of gillette fusion 5 razors. All after facing a truama that would shatter most of us. Cyan also attracts women in a way Edgar only wishes he could, why? Because Cyan is all man all the time. Like all real men Cyan does exactly 1 gay thing: he likes to make silk flowers.
