The bo staff is an ancient weapon used in martial arts or kung fu. It's a well balanced weapon with many use cases. But this week, I learned how to spin the bo staff because it looks really cool when mastered.

The staff bounced off the side of my head, broke my brand new glasses and sent my dentures flying out of my mouth to half way across the other side of the room. I very nearly knocked myself out. Yep -- correcting your stance really helps. With weapons, if you're right handed you'll find yourself in a southpaw stance more often than not. Also, learning spinning without bo fundamentals is part of why you will get banged up when learning. You need to develop an awareness of the bo as an extension of your body for proprioception. It's why we don't teach this stuff till advanced levels. But hey -- you did it despite all the hard knocks! Well done!

Its transferred into the Bo Staff quite a bit and its interesting to see someone begin from scratch vs when I started from scrath and could do the leading pinky with ease. Great teaching, great video.
The fist one skip catch is not a martial spin. Only used in movies so the camera can see the stick, by you tubers and baton twirlers. The upper cuts especially one handed always put your right foot forward (if the stuck is in your right hand, the body needs to be able to turn with the stick, start with two hands as the left hand can help guide the stick and don't hold the stick in the centre 2/3 infront. Oh you got to that :)
Great video. Technique is everything & practice. Awesome

As a staff amateur myself, when you were excited about how fast your staff can spin i knew immediately through the power of the force that you would bonk yourself and it such a satisfying sound when it's not me getting bonked

Terrific video! Not sure that you will see this 3 days after posting, but I think you'd make the next level of 'effortless" progress if you engaged your Hua. The two example videos that you watched show them moving their hips rather than their knees or arms, as the power behind the staff. It looks like you are using your arms and shoulders for power. If you can 'wiggle' your hips (kinda of like moving a hula hoop) and transfer the power through your shoulders more like hinges, it might make everything more effortless (in your sleep) and relaxing. Of course, you have to go through the steps that you showed in this video to get to that level of control, so that you can shift the center of momentum down to your hips. I don't know if "Hua" is a Kung Fu or Tai Chi term? If you can make another video after you figure out and implement what I'm trying to say, I think it'd make a very cool comparison to this one.

Ive tried this standing up on a kayak and spin the paddle it acts like a propeller good way to strengthen your upper body and balance.. the paddles on the end make for a slow and steady motion it's really hard though. I'm sure we'd love to see you try it

Definitely a good skill to have, personally, i had a custom 2 piece steel staff, it screwed together in the middle, made it easier to transport in my kit bag, nice thing to have camping, makes a good walking stick, weapon, you can use it to pitch a tent, really versatile, especially if its a two piece staff, and i carry it simply because i did martial arts and figured i may as well use what i learned 😂 love hearing that staff sing though, half whistle, half beating the air like a helicopter

I was inspired to learn the bo staff by gimli from lotr lol. I thought it was so cool the way he flourished in moria. My parents had issues with me playing with axes so I used an axe handle, then I heard about bo staves and how(relatively) cheap they could be

LOL, The video made me laugh when you hit your head with the staff, but respectfully, because I've been there and know how much it hurts. 😵 I've banged my body countless times practicing with staffs and nunchucks. Great video!
