I'm just starting Bo Staff, and seeing your vid taught me the most important thing: WEAR A HELMET! I never saw anyone else wear one, so you are the trailblazer!! Glad I saw this! lol Good vid!
Another way I’ve found to make your second spin faster is to hold the staff slightly off center. It makes the center of gravity off from you hand and extra weight will fall down, creating more energy.
With the first spin you do, hand positioning changes direction. If your left hand is on bottom, it moves clockwise. If your right is on bottom, it goes counterclockwise. (From the perspective of the person holding the staff).
We have all hit our heads or our knees with it. I bashed my knee with mine during a form at the tournament. I just carried on. You're also missing basic spin 4. I practice Shaolin do. Learned the 4 basic spins in one class. Bo staff is not my favorite weapon because my arms are hyper extended and it feels awkward to me. Try the Quan moves next. Now thats a challenge but fun.
Did u completed your kung fu training ? How was that ? And can u plz tell us how many things u have learnt and how many things will you try to learn ????? This is the big question in my mind 🙃😎 And tell us about yourself
Great teaching, great video. The fist one skip catch is not a martial spin. Only used in movies so the camera can see the stick, by you tubers and baton twirlers. The upper cuts especially one handed always put your right foot forward (if the stuck is in your right hand, the body needs to be able to turn with the stick, start with two hands as the left hand can help guide the stick and don't hold the stick in the centre 2/3 infront. Oh you got to that :) Great video. Technique is everything & practice. Awesome
A lot of these techniques have been easy to learn from watching movies :D And since I'm working out at the farm, I actually use an (unbalanced) pitchfork. So to not hit me, I'd be extra careful with the sharp end, whenever it swings past my head and legs. I've... hit myself, but I learned thanks to the risk being in my mind, teaching me much faster. I also noticed that spear-dancing is a thing of balance and style. Centre of balance and motion keeps it going. Keep the momentum going and your mission would simply be to just control that said momentum. Such an epic skill to have! I'm definitely needing a bo staff, however..
for the 2nd one... try holding it off balanced.. the end that leads, should have a little more weight.. and with that, you don't have to torque as much.. now it should feel more like swinging and axe or something.. and keep a smaller circle of rotation with your wrist.. not so much arm movements.. the smaller the circle, the faster the rotation.. hope that helps good luck!
Definitely a good skill to have, personally, i had a custom 2 piece steel staff, it screwed together in the middle, made it easier to transport in my kit bag, nice thing to have camping, makes a good walking stick, weapon, you can use it to pitch a tent, really versatile, especially if its a two piece staff, and i carry it simply because i did martial arts and figured i may as well use what i learned 😂 love hearing that staff sing though, half whistle, half beating the air like a helicopter
I've been doing this for 20 years, can do all this behind my back while spinning in circles myself, above my head, and tossed over the shoulder mid spin to be caught by the other hand behind the back.
Watch me train like Bruce Lee!

This is such a cool video --- thank you for taking the steps apart... great tips... AWESOME
A lot of these techniques have been easy to learn from watching movies :D
And since I'm working out at the farm, I actually use an (unbalanced) pitchfork.
2:37 Oh yess you mastered the
BELLY DANCER 🩰

It's funny that you are showing this, as I kid I loved the bow staff and I practiced all of this is out knowing. Amazing to me :)
for the 2nd one... try holding it off balanced.. the end that leads, should have a little more weight.. and with that, you don't have to torque as much.. now it should feel more like swinging and axe or something.. and keep a smaller circle of rotation with your wrist.. not so much arm movements.. the smaller the circle, the faster the rotation..
hope that helps good luck!
I Will sub man, this is strictly funny
Totally a new sub man, Keep it up
3:04 - oh geez. The helmet came in handy that time! I'm going to include protective goggles when I start to learn that one.
So fun! I love this so much!
5:12 makes me laugh every time😂
I've been doing this for 20 years, can do all this behind my back while spinning in circles myself, above my head, and tossed over the shoulder mid spin to be caught by the other hand behind the back.
Im a beginner and this is awesome dude!!!
Been looking into teaching myself to use a staff. This definitely brings hope
Ive been training bo staff for about two months now. A very fluent, dangerous weapon.
