    Finally someone else who points out that the color of the lettering on the cam covers isn't a reliable way to identify the different 4A-GE's.
    I can certainly appreciate video's like these, but you are pretty focused on the head design. I know that's where the terms 'Bigport' and 'Smallport' come from. But there are some differences in the cylinder blocks of earlier and later 4A-GE's as well.
    Very early 4A-GE's (In both the AE86 and the AW11 MR2) used 3-ribbed cylinder blocks with 40mm bigends on the conrods instead of the 42mm bigends and 7-ribs of the later blocks. They also used 18mm piston pins which were pressed in instead of the 20mm piston pins which were held in place with retaining clips.
    So both the cylinder blocks and the internals were beefed up with later blocks.
    Not a direct difference between smallport and bigport 4A-GE's, but still something to look out for if you are looking at the 4A-GE engine in general.

    big port had the faulty designed oil pump, the small port have redesign improve oil pump ( which the 20v 4age also use). small port has higher compression ratio, make 130hp vs 112 hp. stronger block and crank. over all, the small port beat the big port in every cat, the down side is finding one cause it was only made from 1990 to 1991 so there are not alot of them around.

    • @antrinh5525
      @antrinh5525 3 года назад

      @@darylthorne3225 the different is in the teeth of the pump, the first generation oil pump got the square teeth shape. and over time it caused crack inside the oil pump. the second generation oil pump got a more thicker inner teeth with round shape, it create less friction and don't cause crack like the old one did. the second pump was used from 1988-1991 4age, 1988-1999 the 4age is still the big port with tvist but the oil pump is new. the 1990-1991 the 4age small port came to birth. no more tvist which is a good thing cause now the intake port all open up all the time vs the tvist system which close some intake port and only open all when a certain rpm reach. the small port compression ratio is 10 vs 9 from the big port. back in the 90 compression ratio of 10 is consider advance at that time.

    How hard is it to put small port into ae86..is it just change intake around..??

    • @Tuned4Speed
      @Tuned4Speed  3 года назад +2

      Well if your getting a smallport from an ae92 which is fwd. Then youll have to transfer some components off of your rwd in 4age like for example the wateroutlet housing by intake side of the engine is different on the rwd smallport vs your rwd 4age. Basically youll have to transfer your rwd 4age parts as well as get the smallport intake. Also the smallport has a knock sensor while your bigport ae86 doesn't. So just some small differences but once sorted out it goes really smooth

    why is the small port is better for turbocharging like I seriously want to know.

    • @Tuned4Speed
      @Tuned4Speed  3 года назад +2

      The bigport can be turbod and still have a great setup but The smallport is better because all small ports had a 7rib reinforcements on the block when the bigport only had it in it's 2nd generation. Also the smallport had oil squirters, a better cylinder head that provided smaller ports which got rid of the bigport 4ages main issue at low rpms hence why they deleted tvis in the smallport 4age . Oh and They all added a knock sensor.
      4age smaller ports increase air velocity down low to improve torque and power at the lower rpms
      In general both 4ages can do great with turbos but the smallport has it's advantages but the bigport has it's as well.
      Hopes it helps thanks for watching!

  • @25kmgb
    @25kmgb 2 года назад +1

    Have to give a thumbs down because you didn't explain the difference between early big ports and the later ones. 3 rib to 7 rib block, increase size of crank journal and piston pin size and oil pump gear design, plus oil squirters- all happened before small port head was introduced. Your not the expert you portray yourself to be.

      But to help you out the bigport 4age made around 112 to 115hp depending on which generation bigport you had.
      The small port 4age made around 123hp to 128 hp depending on what market you were in and if you had a maf or map sensor.
