I would never use a ND filter at night! You are reducing the available light by using an ND filter, if the light is already limited, you don't want to block it even more.
I can't give an exact number, that's not how it works. You could need an ND16 just like you could need an ND64. You have to put an ND on and see how it looks (make sure the ISO stays low)
Just leave it on fully auto or just set everything manually. For a day to night, you will want to make the day part a little bit darker to have the night part a little bit brighter. You should do some test to find the right settings.
Loic, you have a superb presenting style. Your videos too are excellent - thank you. I discovered you yesterday and subscribed. I believe this video by someone else accidentally demonstrates so many things that you talk about in this video. The moment it starts (with a time lapse), I thought “there’s no motion blur” - the water and vehicles are both choppy. As the video progresses, he reveals his settings - 24 FPS and a shutter speed 1/80th of a second instead of 1/50th. He comments that it’s overexposed as he drops the shutter speed from the correct exposure of 1/120th of a second to 1/80th - having watched your video, I thought “he needs an ND filter”. I don’t mean to criticise him (I’m not - I’m learning from you and him) but I’d appreciate knowing if I’m right - are the cars and water choppy in your opinion? The video is here: ruclips.net/video/g3ZGxZcYiYM/видео.html. Thanks. Keep up the superb videos.
Thanks, it's much appreciated! 😊 I just checked and you are right, he definitely needs some ND filters to make the timelapse look better 😉 I see two errors with what he has done: 1. 1/80s doesn't blur anything, the water and the cars are relatively sharp (for comparison, my timelapses had a shutter speed of around 1/4s to 1/2s) 2. When using the RAW photo recording, the minimum interval is 4 seconds. Combine that with a shutter speed of around 1/80 and we are missing almost 4 seconds between every photo. With that much time, the cars don't appear to be moving: they pop in and out of the frame. It's an annoying limitation from the DJI Pocket 2 but it's important to keep in mind. For example, in my timelapse of the sunset or the waterfall, it wasn't a problem because nothing moves fast enough and the blur "hides" the fact that we are missing frames. It's not perfect but it also works on the highway shots because the fast motion + exaggerated blur make it look chaotic (but still natural) because our brain process it as us moving really fast!
Oh also, when making a timelapse the rule of "double your framerate" doesn't work anymore. I usually go around 1/10 to 1s second depending on the amount of blur I want. The faster the output of the timelapse/hyperlapse will be, the longer the shutter speed should be to create more blur.
@@loicba Thanks. See, I’m learning from you! As you say that when using the RAW photo recording, the minimum interval is 4 seconds, I’m intrigued to know how you would have performed the same time lapse (the one of that bridge and river). Would you have done it in something other than RAW so that you could select a shorter time interval? If so, roughly what settings would you have used? Also, I’m not sure what you mean by “the faster the output of the timelapse will be...”. Do you mean the faster the objects are moving (in this case the river and the cars) or the shorter the time interval between frames? Thanks for educating me.
Nice to hear that! I am still learning too; I might not be 100% right on everything I say. If I have something moving fast, like cars, I don't use RAW but it's okay with the water if you use a ND filters. There are two solutions: 1. Use a 1/25s shutter and use a 0.5s interval. This should be enough to slightly blur the cars and the small interval will avoid having huge gaps. 2. Use a 1/2s shutter to create lots of blur and use an interval of 2s. You will still be missing frames but everything that is moving will be quite blurry making it look a lot better. I meant that if that if you are taking a timelapses (let's say 10 minutes), you will need more blur if your interval is higher (let's say 10s - output 2s video) than if your interval is short (let's say 0.5s - output 50s video) because everything in the first one will appear to be moving a lot faster, hence more blur will make it look a lot more natural!
@@loicba (This comment is really for anyone like me who is learning). Here’s another example of someone apparently getting it wrong - a time lapse of Hong Kong. It’s interesting seeing the difference (in the same video) between the time lapse of boats (moving slowly so the video is less choppy) and cars (moving fast, very choppy). It’s interesting seeing your advice in action - or not in action in this case - and seeing the effect. ruclips.net/video/tuu789m3cgQ/видео.html I’m only coming across these videos as I’m watching them to learn.
Yes, it's a great camera for a travel vlog! It's small and compact, but also very good image quality and useful features like a wireless microphone and wide-angle lens.
See the many examples on RUclips where people just walk around with the camera providing a picture of their part of the planet to the rest of the world. Works well, especially with the immersive surround sound.
2nd , any advice on how to improve the audio on the pocket? planning to get the zoom H1N The thing with using ND filters to get that 180 deg rule most people watching videos don't even know about it and doesn't care.
If you have the Pocket 2, the wireless microphone seems to compress a lot the audio, it's already better if you plug the microphone directly in the camera. It definitely will be better using an external microphone and recorder. I know most people don't know about the 180° rule but they definitely should care if they are making videos! I also wanted to show that there is more to ND filters than just motion blur in video 🙂
@@loicba I'm still using the old dji osmo pocket, it's been a year with me. Not sure if getting the pocket 2 is worth it. Like should I get the base model $349 + zoom H1N ($99) or the pocket 2 creator combo $500+
@@MrRaychard123 If you planning to buy the Zoom H1N, I wouldn't buy the DJI Pocket 2. The main reason to upgrade is the wireless microphone but the Zoom H1N will deliver better audio. The Osmo Pocket also has more depth of field, better active track and easier colors to color grade.
The Pocket 2 internal mics are excellent for capturing a 360 degree soudfield, and rotating it to match the angle of the lens. The pickup pattern can be changed to front, or front and back, or all round. There's also a quite useful audio zoom function and you can also choose mono or stereo or wind noise on or off, plus level control. Chief issue is that there's no easy way to avoid wind noise (though some have sucesfully used DIY screens). Personall I have tried an external stereo mic with 'dead kitten' and it worked well, and I am about to try using a Zoom H2N with its five mics producing surround sound like the built in mics, but it will accept a normal 'dead kitten' over the whole unit. You can use it as a mic only, or as a recorder. A zoom H1N will give you good stereo sound with your Pocket 1, but you will have to combine the audio and video afterwards - not really hard, but somewhat tedious. Choices, choices...
Hey Loic, Have you tested side by side polarpro cine and DJI filters side by side? Is there any difference? Polar Pro are 3 times more expensive than DJI...
I don't own the PolarPro cine ND filters, so no. In my other tests, the Freewell filter have slightly more saturated colors but that probably the polarizing filter that is affecting the shot. I didn't test ND only filters from Freewell so I can't tell for sure which one is better.
Not great 😥The autofocus system stops working at around -10℃. It stars hunting for focus forever. If I need to use it, I heat the gimbal with my hand (it takes like 5 minutes) and then I can shoot for another 10-15 minutes but it's annoying. I have a lens warmer similar to this one: amzn.to/2M1zUid. I want to test it with the Pocket 2 to see if it can help.
Where are you shooting? Is it inside? Outside? How much light do you have? What are you settings? In good lighting conditions, I never have any problems. I can even get some clean shots at ISO 1600 at night with some decent lighting on my subject.
So we can't have motion blur and a perfect exposure at the same time, unless we use an ND filter?
I checked a few reviews and they were never as good, especially the wide angle angle ones. I always say that's worth paying for good filters because they will modify how your image looks (either in good way or bad one). Freewell is also specialized in making lenses where Neewer makes all kinds of accessories.
Because your questions was about Neewer and Freewell filters. I actually own a pack of Polar Pro ND filters and talked about them in my accessories video for the DJI Osmo Pocket. I honestly don't see much difference between Freewell and Polar Pro ND filters.
Yes, I have PolarPro filtera (that I bought with my own money) and these from Freewell. They both have a slight color cast but it's very noticeable. The color cast because more visible if your use the polarized filter on the Freewell filter.
The video is about creative technique. ND filters are a very important creative tool and especially an important tool for cinematic video. I was not paid or asked to make this video, I just thought it would be interesting to share...

What nd filter number can you recommend for 4k60fps shutterspeed 1/120 in a sunny day?
I can't give an exact number, that's not how it works. You could need an ND16 just like you could need an ND64. You have to put an ND on and see how it looks (make sure the ISO stays low)

thanks! 😍
Amazing content, thanks! A question, I'm using Osmo Pocket 1. So there is no AutoMaxISO option, what could I do? Like for day-to-night timelapses.
I just checked and you are right, he definitely needs some ND filters to make the timelapse look better 😉 I see two errors with what he has done:
1. 1/80s doesn't blur anything, the water and the cars are relatively sharp (for comparison, my timelapses had a shutter speed of around 1/4s to 1/2s)
It’s interesting seeing your advice in action - or not in action in this case - and seeing the effect. ruclips.net/video/tuu789m3cgQ/видео.html
I’m only coming across these videos as I’m watching them to learn.
Should I purchase it ?
I want to start my travel vlog youtube channel.
Yes, it's a great camera for a travel vlog! It's small and compact, but also very good image quality and useful features like a wireless microphone and wide-angle lens.
Thanks buddy 😊
See the many examples on RUclips where people just walk around with the camera providing a picture of their part of the planet to the rest of the world. Works well, especially with the immersive surround sound.
2nd , any advice on how to improve the audio on the pocket? planning to get the zoom H1N
The thing with using ND filters to get that 180 deg rule most people watching videos don't even know about it and doesn't care.
@@Ozpeter if only I don't own the old pocket
Hey Loic,
Have you tested side by side polarpro cine and DJI filters side by side? Is there any difference? Polar Pro are 3 times more expensive than DJI...
I don't own the PolarPro cine ND filters, so no. In my other tests, the Freewell filter have slightly more saturated colors but that probably the polarizing filter that is affecting the shot. I didn't test ND only filters from Freewell so I can't tell for sure which one is better.
how is the dji pocket 2 in cold weather
Not great 😥The autofocus system stops working at around -10℃. It stars hunting for focus forever. If I need to use it, I heat the gimbal with my hand (it takes like 5 minutes) and then I can shoot for another 10-15 minutes but it's annoying. I have a lens warmer similar to this one: amzn.to/2M1zUid. I want to test it with the Pocket 2 to see if it can help.
Just purchased the pocket 2, but about to return it, because all videos are grainy, even at 400 iso, after that is unusable.
Can someone help?
Where are you shooting? Is it inside? Outside? How much light do you have? What are you settings? In good lighting conditions, I never have any problems. I can even get some clean shots at ISO 1600 at night with some decent lighting on my subject.
@@loicba inside my house, a lots of window lights, very bright
@@loicba tried 24p @50 and 200 iso and still noise
Did you try shooting outside? If it's still very grainy, that would be a problem. Inside do you have any filters on?
So we can't have motion blur and a perfect exposure at the same time, unless we use an ND filter?
First😁👋
Nice!
What about Neewer Filters? They are cheaper than Freewall
I checked a few reviews and they were never as good, especially the wide angle angle ones. I always say that's worth paying for good filters because they will modify how your image looks (either in good way or bad one). Freewell is also specialized in making lenses where Neewer makes all kinds of accessories.
@@loicba why you don't mention polarpro filters?
Because your questions was about Neewer and Freewell filters. I actually own a pack of Polar Pro ND filters and talked about them in my accessories video for the DJI Osmo Pocket. I honestly don't see much difference between Freewell and Polar Pro ND filters.
@@loicba do you own cinematographer or standard series?
@@a.b.5757 Standard Series. One advantage is that they are bigger so it's easier to get them on/off of the camera.
Did you notice any color shifts using this brand of ND filters? Have you used other brands?
Yes, I have PolarPro filtera (that I bought with my own money) and these from Freewell. They both have a slight color cast but it's very noticeable. The color cast because more visible if your use the polarized filter on the Freewell filter.
@@loicba thank you for responding. Which one do you recommend on getting between the two? Polor Pro or the Freewell? Amazing content btw!
this is a commercial of ND filters more than a cinematic shot video
The video is about creative technique. ND filters are a very important creative tool and especially an important tool for cinematic video. I was not paid or asked to make this video, I just thought it would be interesting to share...
