Balance both Beaters - Double Bass Drum Pedal Settings
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- 1. Get beaters to same position and angle 2. Set ideal spring tension for right pedal 3. Set same tension for left pedal 4. Decrease by 1/2 turns on left and test until you get 4-8 swings from both beaters that are similar. Hope this video helps you get an easier to play double bass pedal from having more even pedal settings.

Now this is a great quality use of RUclips shorts, good job
Thanks man but this info is incomplete though. Check the pinned comment! Appreciate your kind words!
yeah i like in my feed
I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for this. As a newbie, it's incredibly hard to find a straight to the point video like this on RUclips. Thank you so much.
You're welcome, but this video ain't complete too. Just to complete it, even if I'm using full tension, I don't think beginners should use full max tension from the beginning. Do something like progressively tightening your springs every month, until you get to the ideal tension you need for your playing after 6months. And also I have a dw5000 pedal. My spring is going to be different from yours. For example a pearl demon drive or tama iron cobra has a stiffer spring so max tension on them is much heavier than max tension on my dw5000. But generally if you have a more budget line pedal, they have lighter springs so max tension is going to be slightly looser than my dw5000. Hope that helps even more!
Two of your shorts said everything I needed someone to tell me. My pedals work like new again.
Woah awesome 💯 which other video helped? The trick shaft one?
Update: I've gotten the trick drum shaft upgrade, watch this video to find out if it's game-changing ruclips.net/user/shorts7dacaTqWOhc
I got the trick but it doesn’t fit my tama
damn can you return it? Which tama pedal do you have, my friend got one for his speed cobra and it fits.
I put a Trick Custom shaft on my DW 5000's, and the left pedal swung for longer than the right. No joke. Those Trick shafts are amazing.
Dammit that's what I need lol, I wanted to order it last week but its out of stock
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ Yeah, I've noticed that. Such a bummer.
Found it in stock at sweetwater. Well its on its way!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ Right on, bro. Mine was a total game changer.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ get an ACD darwin
This was an absolute to the point fantastic short video. Good stuff!
Thanks 👍 check out this other one though, gives you a bit more insight to the main problem - the drive shaft ruclips.net/user/shorts7dacaTqWOhc?si=35QngCuCzJ4sgp9h
Thank you so much for this
I was wondering about this for the longest and this video answered all my questions
Check out the pinned comment, there's things that I missed out. Thank you kindly though :)
Thank you for the information and tip.
lol ! great to find this out now. i always just have gone for the feel and sound similarities by playing and had given up on trying for them to be completely even in spring. seems like there was a reason i could never get them to spring perfectly together
Yeah the shaft hardware really affects this, more so on other pedals. Unless you have the trick drum shaft upgrade or acd pedals. Those are really even
Very useful, cheers
Glad to hear! Cheers
Thanks for this video very informative
Glad it was helpful!
You need to buy a decent made drive shaft, ADC or trick are great drive shafts and are definitely worth buying for performance
Already did! It hasn't arrived though
Trick shaft. I'm ordering one soon. My pearl redlines perform better than my 9000s
@@PhireXZ I got mine for my speed cobras, completely changed the slave pedal for the better
ADC pedals are the dream!
The driveshaft that comes with the Machined DW pedals is actually pretty good compared to the Trick one.
Awesome. Thnx
Welcome!
That makes me feel better knowing price and quality only matter so much. It’s never going to be perfectly balanced
Hahaha Thank you!! I needed this haha now I'm clear watching your DW pedal 😁😁😁
Happy to help! It really is impossible to get low to mid range pedals with the stock shaft to be identical. We can only tweak it to reduce the difference as much as possible :D
found this short at the right time
Change drive shaft to stop left pedal drag. DW drive shaft is a “square or cube” type… circular drive shaft are more efficient. ACD Darwin makes a drive shaft that’s not only circular but has 8 upgraded ball bearings!
Yes I upgraded it to a trick drum shaft, but the acd one is definitely the best there is
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ do you recommend this shaft or ACD still?
The Trick driveshaft is a great accessory for any double pedal.
It's on its way :)
Its awesome you’ll love it!
Agreed, installed one on my 16 year old Pearl power shifter 2 weeks ago. First time I’ve been able to get the beaters balanced since I bought them
awesome. never knew this
Hey this info isn't complete. It's got some holes, check my pinned comment
My strong leg and ankle uses more spring tension. Setting them exactly the same makes no sense at all unless your leg strengths are the same. AXIS🎉
I have a DW 5000 double pedal as well. Spring tension maxed out like yours. Your right pedal swings for days! Mine is like it’s stuck in sand. I checked the bearings and found the outer bearing (7/8”) barely spun while the smaller, inner bearing (3/4”) spins freely. Cleaned the bearings, not much difference. Bought new bearings and will replace today but spinning them by hand, they don’t feel much different. Would love to know your process. Thanks dude!
Man I don't know how to troubleshoot that, something really wrong with the part(s) bring it into the shop or get a professional drum tech to troubleshoot. Or if it's too much trouble sell this one and get a new one
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ I appreciate your reply. Swapping out the bearings today and will also clean up the hinge bearings and swivel bearings. If I’m still in the same spot than I’ll replace them for sure. I didn’t even know these pedals could swing as fast and freely as yours. Thanks again.
My single Tama Speedcobra pedals, even though identical, like all pedals, are very hard to tweak the EXACT same ...
I will try oiling and maintenance, with lots of patience. Thank you bro.
Yes it's really not possible to get the low to mid range pedals to be exactly the same like I showed. However I found a solution that could help. One of my followers recommended an upgrade. Buying the Trick Drum double pedal shaft, or the ACD shaft to replace your stock pedal shaft. The ACD shaft is too expensive I reckon (250-300usd with shipping), but I might try the trick drum shaft and see how much of a difference does it make (it's currently out of stock though)
ACD Unlimited is a small company that makes many upgrades for many different pedals, driveshafts are one. Those DW machine drives aren't nearly as smooth as a Trick, Czarcie Kopyto, ACD Unlimited Darwins, or even Pearl Demon drives for example. All of those have better balk bearing driveshafts that don't need as much maintenance.
You sound convincing... But this is only the truth for some. Strength, technique and personal references will make what you are telling people untrue. Practicing makes this untrue too
Does testing it by checking the swing balance of both beaters really saying anything?
What about the Canopus replacement bearing for the DW 5000 series pedals, it's called the Speed Master Bearing? I have a DW 5000 single pedal, I might get the Canopus upgraded bearing to see what difference it makes.
I have no experience with those
great tip. I've always wondered if my pedals were of lower quality. time for some maintenance :)

If i didn't have a cracked china AND a cracked crash, pedals would be next on my list of things to replace. I'm still rocking my $100 pdp pedals 😅
Honor your skills Tommy. Cymbals, even cracked, can be bashed forever, and won't affect your chops improvements and won't increase your tightness and speed.
Yet Quality NEW pedals could ....
Cymbals can be bought for good prices if you buy used off the classified.
And real cymbals, the ones that don't crack, never age. Buy a bottle of cymbal cleaner, and your new USED $40 real cymbal, will become like a brand new one, with all of its original brilliance.
Then use your money for the real game changer, NEW quality pedals.
@tommyppatton3556 Keep rocking the pdp pedals, but you can consider an upgrade instead (just found this out from one of my followers) Buying the Trick Drum double pedal shaft, or the ACD shaft to replace your stock pedal shaft. Hi. I have an old and abandoned tama speed cobra 310 double pedal. It's rusted here and there and somehow feels really light, which i don't know if it's supposed to be like that since i haven't do any drumming in years. Any idea on how to restore a pedal?
Ahh, to remove the rust, you want to soak the rusted metal parts overnight in WD40. Then a lot of sanding. And repeat the process until all the rust is gone. There are more details videos on youtube to walk you through the whole process and the tools you need.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ ah thank you. can you give me the link to the video or maybe the name of the channel?
These 2, the 2nd one shows way more rusted tension rods. ruclips.net/video/GWHgenv7ruA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/_I3er0Welag/видео.html
@Art Of Drumming HQ thank you so much bro
Everyone seems to like high tension and I try to play with as little as possible. I even practice with the springs off
Yes I know of drummers who do that, one of my heroes Jojo Mayer does that. You do you as long as you can play whatever you want. All the best to your drumming journey 💯
Funny to see that kind of advices. My left beater is at a higher angle than the right one and the left spring is looser because my left foot is simply not the same as my right foot. It does not have the same sensitivity and same precision than my right foot. Reason why my left pedal settings are totally different than the right pedal settings, if that makes sense!
Matt Halpern, one of my favourite drummers has different settings for left and right too. And it's totally okay. If it works for you and you can play at superb levels that you set for yourself. You rock man. There are many ways to arrive at the same result. Cheers :)
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ exactly my point. Settings are there to serve a better quality of playing. Those settings might not work for some people and vice versa. Thanks!
PS: love the channel btw
@@StefBelgium You'd make a great teacher if you aren't already one :)
I've always wanted to know that how these pedal work so similarly and accurately and what do you call that small rod looking thaing that allows the second pedal to move
That's called the shaft. Apparently you can get the ACD or trick drum shafts to replace your stock ones and they do wonders!
I did the @axis balance test over 20 years ago at NAMM Since then everyone is trying to get a Balanced Double Like Axis
the ACD Unlimited Darwin pedals are so smooth the left and right beaters swing almost just like one another, only getting slightly out of sync right before stopping at almost the exact same time
Oh yeah haha I got a trick drum shaft upgrade after this video, made a video about the upgrade and the difference. The acd I suppose are even better :)
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ oh yeah, they are (ACD even makes Trick upgrades) and driveshafts that fit just about any pedal.. Other upgrades include a heel block upgrade for Axis pedals (common failure point on them) anyways, good news about the new driveshaft though, will take a look at the video
❤
Its the drive shaft, not the pedals. If the pedals are similar with the same sprint settings etc. the bearings in the drive shaft also make a difference
You got that right, upgraded the shaft here 😉 ruclips.net/user/shorts7dacaTqWOhc?feature=share
Tried this and got them equal but this made the left spring much looser so I had to tighten it
Change your shaft, makes a big difference ruclips.net/video/7dacaTqWOhc/видео.htmlsi=uJIqWrDXaHyExb8T
It's strange, on my Tama Dyna Sync, I have to put more tension on my slave pedal to achieve the same swings, should I still put less tension or still go with it ? I'm trying to find the perfect settings and it drives me nuts, help guys hahahaha
Oh hey it actually only makes sense if the slave is tighter to achieve same swings. Check my pinned comment, I left out the fact that I wanted the left pedal less stiff. But that's about to change too as I've just gotten a shaft upgrade. Hope that helps!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQThank you ! It helped me alot to undersand more about the pedals, also like you mentioned, the shaft plays a huge role! I have a z-link shaft and maybe thats why I have to set the slave pedal spring tension tighter than I would usually set it on a pedal with a more basic shaft. So many years with double pedal and I'm still learning about them it's crazy
@@ArtOfDrummingHQlet me know when you do the upgrade ! Thanks alot
I got the upgrade and I made a video showing the before and after ruclips.net/user/shorts7dacaTqWOhc it's game-changing!
What if mine has like no swing to the pedals at all js stops after one or two
What pedals do you have? They're probably not well built, or some part of the mechanism needs maintenance or changing.
I have pearl p930’s or smth I’ve changed the beaters and got the trick shaft and they are brand new as of Christmas they are the cheaper demon drives basically and I’ve done every mod I could minus a couple things that cost over 100 bucks and they js don’t swing and it feels rlly stiff and ik it’s not me cuz when I tried out dw 9000’s my playing greatly improved but I don’t have the money to afford something like that
👌👏🎼🥁👍
hey the information in this video is incomplete and lacking, check my pinned comment. cheers!
ACD unlimited Darwin pedals have equal motion. Just saying
Oh yes totally, I'm so late to that party LOL. But I have a trick drum shaft on the way :D
1.4 k?!!!!
Tension slows you down. Lowest tension possible for me
Doesn't work at tempos beyond 200bpm. You have to work your muscles extra hard to push the beaters faster with so little spring tension. But if you're never ever going to play close to those tempos, then certainly lower tension helps you save energy!
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ yeah, I’m nowhere near 200. Maybe that’s why I haven’t reached that yet. 🧐
In the end it's not really important. If you learned and built up muscle memory with the not synchronized you will still play the same as someone who has synchronized one.
Yes, but how many people can do that? Most people would not want a more complicated route. And this is simple because it doesn't require any muscular effort to adjust your pedals.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ yeah true that. I bought the trick drive shaft thanks to your video 😎 and I am curious how it will improve my tempo of gaining muscle memory. Because when I train ankle motion on my main paddle it's so much easier to get the swing then on my slave pedal.
The difference I can achieve by changing my vanilla pedal settings with the standard shaft is really insignificant.
Wait so the slave pedal is slightly looser?? HuUh
Just showing my settings at the end, it's only 1 turn looser so that it gets 5 equal swings, yet doesn't make the left pedal too stiff for me to play. If it's too loose, then the beater swing will be too slow compared to the right , however being easier for left foot to apply force. This is just showing people you can't get a balanced swing unless you the best equipment. But I should have been clearer in the video 😉 well gotta make another one now
mine doesnt swing at all LOL
Damn hahaha
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ is it possible to make it swing without getting a whole new pedal??
Change the shaft to the trick drums or ACD one. And check that all your moving parts are in good condition, well oiled and remove any rust, might need some good maintenance.
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ ok thank you 😊
Why would you want to perfectly balance the pedals. Your one foot is always stronger. If you match the slave to the primary pedal its bad. It wont make your slave foot stronger it will make it harder. Forget all these videos about beater distance and spring tension. A video will never make you better. Spend some time and figure out what is best for you not what is good for someone else
Even that one can’t do even swings. What a POS.
Lol kidding of course
😂 lol. Found out from my followers the ACD or the trick shaft works wonders, so maybe I'm gonna get those and see how they do with my dws
Why are my 400$ speed cobras waaaaaay better than those 1400$ DWs? It has nearly perfectly equal swings, with the heads competing the same number of oscillations.
The dws have really bad shafts it seems hahaha. Cool you're tama gear is fairing much better!
