Interesting review and two different viewpoints on how ‘authentic’ cars need to be in terms of their history, perception and parts sharing. It’s clear Richard loves the engine and ZF ‘box. In my opinion, he’s not wrong. I think it’s one of the best drivetrains in the business for the money. Torquey low down, happy to rev, goes like stink, makes a great noise when you’re on it, quiet when you aren’t, silky smooth and with decent economy, at least as long as you’re not ragging it all the time. Brilliant.
I thought the reason why the Mk IV was revered and idolized was because the body looked futuristic compared to the wedge'y Mk III, and the fact that the 2JZ engine was functionally indestructable (also Gran Turismo/F&F hype)
I was looking at the Supra, but ended up with a decent 2nd hand F-Type V8 R (AWD) no regrets. Saved myself time on having to mods and have instant fun. Cheers lads...
Hey I've got a non turbo 6 cylinder Subaru and... *remembers I actually wanted the JDM 2.0 turbo version of the legacy, but had to settle for the 6 cylinder UK model because insurance, and I don't really like it*
I agree with Jonny about the gearbox - should have had a manual option. I don't like this slide into automatics. These cars won't be tracked mostly, who needs the extra second to 60? The point of it is to be fun...
This thing is really growing on me. I still don't love it but seems like a good value for those looks/speed while still being a fairly good drivers car. But for a car that small with less that 400hp, manual should at least be an option. I'm waiting for that
The thing is people have always slagged off Japanese interiors for being cheap and plasticky. So Toyota give us a nice one with one of the best infotainment systems from BMW and still no ones happy. They use the best current straight six engine available and still no ones happy. They use the best gearbox on the market and still ones happy. They build us a new Bloody Supra when sports car sales aren't great and still no ones happy? What a bunch of cynics we've become in this country. The Mark 4 was pants compared with this car.I'd love one these cars, if only they were just a bit cheaper. I'll be keeping a good eye on the second hand market.Well done Toyota.Good video chaps.
Jonny's got a point on Gazoo. Now that we've seen the Yaris GR.4 and its headline specs, I want a Supra GR.4, with a bespoke engine and drivetrain and lots of mad bits. Maybe a GT3 version would encourage that sort of project (Super GT won't because that's all silhouette racers unrelated to reality anyway). They must have plans to tune it themselves. Even Nissan have done their own in-house NISMO jobs with the "uNtUneABlE" GT-R...
Good episode! Now compare this car to the original Z4M (or Z4) Coupe. Same rear shapes, same ’double bubble’ roof, same (but better) general proportions.
Before F&F & Gran Turismo most Japanese performance cars were almost completely ignored by the British car enthusiast. The UK & US market MKIV Supra had more power than the JDM version, these cars were expensive for their time though so most people wanted a Porsche instead. There's an old Tiff Needell review of the MKIV from his time on TopGear, he really liked it, I'm sure most magazine articles of the time were favourable too.
Great episode, please don’t chuck in doing the vids for a podcast, would it be feasible to just put up an audio only version on the likes of apple podcasts etc rather than doing a full blown podcast at the expense of weekly uploads on here. Just because these are so brilliant compared to much of the other content on YT getting churned out just now
Not to be an internet know-it-all, but the M2 engine is not the same as the Supra engine unless something has changed recently. The M2 has an N55, while the Supra has a B58 :) The B58 is the engine you will find in an M140i, M340i, or of course the Z4. Absolutely cracking engine though, I recently got an M140i X-drive and it is the most entertaining car I've ever driven, and nobody knows how fast it is until you disappear at a set of lights :)
I'm of an age that I can remember the original Supras of old. They were a bit hairy chesty, rusty and naff. If I were in the market for such a vehicle now I would choose the BMW version based on image alone. I have a feeling the US market feels differently about Supras in particular and Toyotas in general.
I know the model a Yaris Hybrid quad turbo with supercharger GTS.... putting out an eco 36bhp :-) you have to be careful in driver focused machines like that. Didn't someone say speed kills. :-)
The BMW boring line of buttons are one of their best features. They can be programmed as short cuts to anything, such as sat nav destinations, call a contact. A useful antidote to the shitty obsession with touch screens that you have complained about before.
Great fun to watch. Styling is perfect; I think if Toyota turned the chassis and engine up by 15% and made the interior a bit more bespoke, then this would be a 5* car.
The Supra is interesting when you compare it to the NSX and the GTR, it's a more retro approach but it's like they've chosen not to compete with their Japanese cousins at Honda and Nissan.
Is there not a Lexus engine they could have pilthered ?? Weird how you can see in to the boot, and weird how it's smaller than a GT86. Not sure what I think about it - just can't see a time where I'd ever buy one - it's almost too soft for my liking, the Nissan 370Z (for example) is your anti-Cayman option for those that like a more physical car - think this should have been more physical
The issue for me with the new 'Supra' is not whether the engine / box etc are good. Clearly they are, as seen in the BMW Z4. But I wanted the 'Supra' to be genuinely much more of an alternative to the Z4, not a variant of it. I mostly agree with Jonny Smith here. The least they could have done would have been to put their own cylinder head on the block. And before anyone argues about the cost, this is the same company which has just unveiled the massively expensive, homologation special GR Yaris!! The Supra was lazily executed!
But thats them making a new chassis, new engine, new car to the market, and having to put money down on factories on a low production car that their trying to sell worldwide. Vs the yaris thats been around forever and is much morr relevant in the car market than the supra is.
The BMW interior would NOT put me off. The infotainment system in my M140i is excellent. More than excellent. The exterior of The supra is really good looking. One thing that puts me off is the lack of rear bulkhead between boot/ trunk and the interior. WTF is that all about. You’ve got to have a secure luggage compartment, never mind how small. But a PORSCHE Cayman has TWO!!
I have a BMW M140i. So the drivetrain is similar to this, along with the interior, dashboard, infotainment etc. Seeing as that stuff is all absolutely excellent, what’s the problem? The looks are brilliant. So much better than the BMW Z4. However, I couldn’t buy one with that hole between boot and cabin. a) noisy b) unsafe c) offensive aesthetics. They’ve ruined the whole car for want of a simple bulkhead.
Pretty much share your opinions on the Mk4 Supra. I do love the looks of this new one , also like the GT86 also but it's hopeless to drive, had two 370'z both modified, one supercharged but think a modified new Supra will be a beast, tuners are getting stonking power out of them with a chassis that can handle it, I go as far to say they will be a classic in years to come. As for the interior yes its too BMW but the Japanese have never been great at interiors unless you are into black shiny plastic and Toyota cant build a sat nav for ****. Great engines are what make sports cars imo and that B58 is a peach, as said without that BMW drivetrain it wouldn't have happened and that would have been a shame. Would I buy one ? Nope probably not, I think it's priced 6-8k too high
The mk4 supra is dangerously overrated. It’s a grandads car, extremely reliable and comfortable. That’s it, the all cast iron inline 6 that could hold 60psi of boost and make 1500bhp is just a silly side bar because all people ever do is put a twattish exhaust on them and sprinkle salt on the arches
The new Supra is a awesome looking car I stood and looked at it ,a true stylish car unlike all the modern day fodder we get fed. You know a Supra when you see one... an SUV is just an SUV until you see a brand badge. An SUV's is just a large shopping trolley on wheels. Utterly pointless for the 85% population.
guys, are you trying a bit too hard trying to diminish MKIV? As if you didn't know anything about MKIV and it sounds strange for motor journos. I mean a lot of things you are saying are true, but while you are trying hard to diminish a myth of MKIV you are hitting hard the car itself and it is not really justified. Especially when talking about UK specification MKIV, which was a top spec on power and gismos if I remember correctly.
I think some journos like to go against the grain just to be different. I'm 38 so I'm at the age when I remember seeing the MK IV new, the MK III had the medallion man image, newly divorced & bought a MK III because all of the Ford Capris were up on blocks by then. The MK IV was so much more modern looking, & yes it was much more powerful at 326 bhp but the price was really high at the time, but that was the same for any of the big Japanese coupes of the era. I'd definitely argue that its the star car of The Fast & The Furious, Dom's Charger had practically a cameo at the end of the film. People in the UK are for the most part utter badge snobs, even if a product is far superior they will still select the lesser car with a 'better' image.
R32 didn't become stuff of legends because FF or Tuning scene. It was all about Gran Turismo games the first 2 why it became such an icon of that generation.
It is interesting watching this review back now that there is the Grrrrrrr Yaris, could Toy-yodda make their own chassis.. No...maybe...? but it just seems lame that they used so much BMW stuff on a car that was meant to be a halo project and I'm not sure that people really wanted it.
I think people blame BMW too much in this situation, they was just the ones that made the car, its toyotas fault for being lazy cheapskates not redoing the interior, all that money that theyre worth and they couldnt even be bothered to redesign a few interior bits and change a couple door chime sounds.
It seems like a car you are happy when other people buy, but yeh I personally dont want one. Tbh for £50k ish I like all the mentioned cars but wouldn't buy any. Would rather spend £30k ish on a golf GTI tcr
party Yeh and while I have had a couple of non performance lexus cars, I don't really know who buys them. Dispite this they keep bringing out RCF special editions. Again they look, and sound amazing but I think most people just go for m3/4 or c63
This Supra looks like a dog's breakfast - what is Toyota thinking? Seems that Toyota, these days, never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity - they COULD have made the new Supra a much more interesting looking mid-engined completely new look. But no . . . it is SERIOUSLY, as he says, CARTOONY, and how! I think it really WON"T sell - at least not in numbers that Toyota hopes it will!! YECHH!
Couple of issues - that is one fantastic engine, Toyota should have spend a little time in convincing us we are in a Toyota once in the driving seat .... Which is a conflict to me as BMs are in a different league inside to the current Toyota vehicles, which are generally made from fisher price cast offs. But spending cash on reworking the core BMW drive train would be pointless, that's what the after market exist for and would negate what Toyota hopes the hard core Supra buyer will do. Then it's your shitty cameras I have seen your plug for the brand and did consider getting one in support of you boys! .... have they not shouted at you both yet? for making us all think they are pants 😵 ...
I'm sorry but the mk4 supra is a legend and very iconic you've not driven one so you wouldn't understand the love around it. The hype for the new supra would never have been so big if it wasnt for the mk 4 and if there wasn't such a massive fan base for the mk4 Toyota would never have made this z4. It does need a manual that makes it a proper drivers car because you actually have to drive it not just put your foot down and go. This new supra has no personality nothing special about it
I have a simple test to determine if a car should be manual or auto. If the answer to this question "Would i ever take this car out for a drive, just for the sake of it" is yes, then it should be manual, otherwise, no, auto. And this Supra is nowhere near special enough to do that imo.......
I don't usually comment on RUclips videos, I don't approve of interaction, for the love of god will you please get a better camera with better low light abilities. Please.
New Sniff and Smith? 42 minutes long? I'm stiffer than an LFA.
Geezer J HA
With each year that passes, Mr Smith looks more and more like an out-of-work magician who's down on his luck.
He reminds me more and more of the landlord in Plebs
🤣drop it out...Mr Smith is a legend
Spot on! And oh dear those turned up half mast jeans and sickly coloured boots/trainers!!!
This channel should be at 1M + subscribers - it's brilliant. Plus 10 points for talking about Smokey Nagata - who looked like a local accountant.
i've got a growing affinity for the bulbousness of these reviews.
Dominic Tourettes-o, you boys nearly had me on the floor with that. Cheers lads!
Is Sniffs jumper made of pure static!
That parcel shelf priest hole thing is triggering my OCD. Is that a home brew kit in there?
99% of people who bore everyone senseless with how good the Mk4 supra is have never driven one.

I think Mr Porter quite liked it... how about a manual gearbox similar to what the S2000 had.. This will be a nice secondhand buy...
I very much like the new Supra but I have an impression that Toyota's still left quite a bit in the tank for a more focused variant.
I thought the reason why the Mk IV was revered and idolized was because the body looked futuristic compared to the wedge'y Mk III, and the fact that the 2JZ engine was functionally indestructable (also Gran Turismo/F&F hype)
Just for general information; Most of the fake vents cannot be turned into ducts without serious modification i.e. cutting through metal
Did Porter bring his hat box, or is that actually a massive wheel of cheese?
Sorry, that is my late Nana's shopping bag, which comes to every S&S shoot. Why? Because it contains camera mounts and cables and stuff.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Oh interesting , thought you were doing a bit of plastering on the side lol

F type is an excellent machine, you made the right choice
I am liking this Supra more and more. I was not keen when it first surfaced. I would rather have this than a BMW Z4, no question!
Excellent BobbyLew impersonation at the beginning, Mr Smith. 👍🏻
Judging by the builders bucket in the boot perhaps a Corsa van would be more appropriate for you too.
The older Alpine's are not pants !!. I love my 88 GTA V6 Turbo. 220bhp and 1000kg. Whats not to like it goes like stink and handles amazingly.
Love the new Supra, looks really good, especially from the back. Nice video guys👏
Please do something about the video quality when your inside a vehicle. Its very inconsistent. Consider switching to GoPros..
+ maybe think about the sound as well. The engine/road noise was masking what you were saying quite a lot.
Love this..hate scripted content
It’s “you’re “ inside a vehicle....

Another great review.

Yes!
That was after it was evolved, it was a 2jz at the time of the record

The Supra is interesting when you compare it to the NSX and the GTR, it's a more retro approach but it's like they've chosen not to compete with their Japanese cousins at Honda and Nissan.
It never was a competitor to the NSX or GTR so would the new one be?
Is there not a Lexus engine they could have pilthered ??

Which is a conflict to me as BMs are in a different league inside to the current Toyota vehicles, which are generally made from fisher price cast offs. But spending cash on reworking the core BMW drive train would be pointless, that's what the after market exist for and would negate what Toyota hopes the hard core Supra buyer will do. Then it's your shitty cameras I have seen your plug for the brand and did consider getting one in support of you boys! .... have they not shouted at you both yet? for making us all think they are pants 😵 ...
Max power was better before it went Japanese mad, cars you might actually own, rather than another 45 yr dentist with his 800hp R34 GTR. 🙄
BMW Z4 coupé?
Shitting biscuits.
Nice car but if I had the money I’d just be boring and buy a Cayman.
Those with the dosh would be missing out if they don't try it
It is just a BMW. And owners will be reminded of that when it's out of warranty and something brakes in that engine bay. It's just a matter of time.
For less money you can have a manual E46 or E92 M3 which will provide far more pleasure. Case closed.
Not really 'case closed' if you're comparing 6-20 year old used cars to a brand new model. Different markets.
This new supra has no personality nothing special about it
The mk4 is a dog until you put £30k into it.
What the bloody hell is Brian wearing?
Ian Conn there's noone here called Brian mate
Ian Conn his names Brian Walker
Hideous exterior, bland interior, no manual, droning Bmw engine. Electrical nightmares as soon as the warranty expires. No thanks.
Sat in one last week - horribly claustrophobic.
I have a simple test to determine if a car should be manual or auto. If the answer to this question "Would i ever take this car out for a drive, just for the sake of it" is yes, then it should be manual, otherwise, no, auto. And this Supra is nowhere near special enough to do that imo.......
You can literally drop a manuel from a B58 bmw and you'll have a manuel. It'll be slower but it definitely won't touch it's auto.
Double bubble roofs have been ruined by the Peugeot RCZ. Bloody hateful thing
I don't usually comment on RUclips videos, I don't approve of interaction, for the love of god will you please get a better camera with better low light abilities. Please.
As cool as it is that Toyota teamed up with BMW this vehicle is a snore fest
