It's a nice anti-SUV.
Great review guys, I purchased an Alpine A110 PE back in September, still to this day it feels extra special whenever I get in and take it for a drive, great fun
I take it you are a intelligent, affable man then?
@@aukanmeister affordable? I think not
How does it ride? Would you agree with Gordon Murray's assessment?
How about to this day?
I have a Captur as well as one of these! I bought both as I love the control stalks so much....
In a way, not being manual actually saves us from that detractor from all things stick shift, namely a shonky, wobby gear shift! And getting the shift to feel right on a rear transverse layout, is really difficult, especially when using a left-over front wheel drive transmission where all the linkages come out the "wrong" side of the transmission.......
Good point. Took them ages to give the Elise a really good gearchange. And I'm not sure the MGF's was ever that good. Richard
My favourite review team. Coolest lightweight roadster from France.
The Renault Alpine A110 - Not driven by pricks.
Not true, I just ordered one :-)
Just discovered you guys a couple months ago. Love the banter of two friends with a ton of knowledge on a topic in which I also share a passion - talking crap endlessly.
As for the car…..it seems like an absolute hoot. I love the sounds (the reedy exhaust note and even stuff like the turn signal). Am a huge fan of light cars that value sport over comfort……especially when mid engine configured. I agree with you, however, that cars like this (and the Alfa 4c and 781 gt4) that have fabric straps or light grade plastic to give the optics of weight savings. Put 20 more kgs (probably less) all over the car in the switch gear and it will feel like a greater quality item without having any discernible affect on the driving dynamics.
I will - however - go further than you both on the choice of transmission. Perhaps it’s because I’m an American (and proper manuals have always been more scarce than in the rest of the auto world), but for a sports car, it must be a manual for me. It’s not only a shame that they didn’t build a manual choice, it’s a mistake. If the economics didn’t allow for a choice, make it manual only. Get an auto in your estate car for Christ’s sake.
In any event, very well done!
A day trip to Bedford, how exciting!
well done, you managed to talk about lightness and don't mention Lotus in the full video! LOL ;)
Great and fair review - I don’t have an issue with the small amount of boot / storage space - teaches you to stop carting so much needless stuff around - great drivers car
Bloody cup holders. Only second to distraction by mobile phones. Driving a car, any car, is not about leaning back, sippin on your coffee while scrolling on your phone. if you are driving an Alpine a cup holder is the last thing on your mind. If you are driving anything else, well, you are driving the wrong car.
Came for the A110, stayed for Eldorado. What next, a 'Families' (granada tv) episode with a Holden / Vauxhall cross over? Maybe Jude Law as a guest driver?
Glad I'm not the only one that finds the AMG (and audi RS and all the cheaper versions, especially golfs that have a crackle pop tune) just silly.
I like an authentic bit of popping from a car or bike that actually can use a decent tune, can handle it. Seems authentic. But the lads that drive to these sizle pubs at 180 decibels and get out thinking they are all that just do my head in.
"Its got a spowt button" lol
18:42 there's an intake resonator mounted to the bulkhead, see David Pook's Alpine Instagram.
Ohhhh yea. Thanks for tip off. Interesting. Richard
For some reason, that is more acceptable to me than a sound played through the speakers. They're both artificial, but at least the noise comes from an actual engine.
The weight of 1100kg is a critical factor. I'd have one as its not another clone. Only thing is, the Golf R is cheaper and faster cross country, but also has room for the family and stuff!
But looks like the poverty spec diesel that your mum owns.
Not related to the video, but I saw an Audi Q7 with those tinted film plates fitted, broken down & stranded on the hard shoulder of the motorway earlier.
It made me smile and I hope it brightens your day too :)
Something about the interior reminded me of something and it's finally come to me. It's the air vents from a Renault Wind.
He always looks like he's wearing his kids pajamas.
jesus christ you're right😂👔
I had those audio controls in a rental Dacia Logan in Bucharest. Lovely car though. Oh the Alpine, too.
Would have one over a Porka anytime
10:42 "Store bought hair" :-)
I love that you drive around my 'hood in all these reviews, so I know what they're like on roads that I'd drive on. I'm not sure if I'm affable or shaggy-haired enough for an Alpine though...
Good to see you guys travelling through Bedford, I drive those roads every day.
I knew about El Dorado and the A610. My Dad is a huge Renault fan and also was THE only fan of El Dorado when it was on TV. True story.
Markus from Eldorado! Awesome!
I love the Renault music controls. They feel cheap but they're so handy
Jonny spends a disarmingly long time not looking at the road 👀😂
Jonny so wants to be like Tiff
The only GTA I ever saw was virtually new and broken down outside the Trebawith Strand Hotel in Cornwall
About half way through I became fixated that you were both wearing blue(ish) clothes. Don't think that was a concious effort to match the colour? - And no I'm not going to check your other vids to check for colour matching !
Rich's Evo article/tender knacker-bag test drive was fantastic!
Why would you get a vasectomy? Whyyy?!
My Dacia Dokker has the exact same audio control :P
Correction chaps, the GTA V6 Turbo came out first in 1985, then the A610 in 1991.
Was just about to say this. 10 nerd points to you sir
@@PluckinA_Connor Well i own a GTA Turbo ;-)
@@dj_paultuk7052 Jel!
I love these two. At times they are quite Partridge "modest amount of quilting", but do now please decline the verb "to lightweight"
Actually Rich it's about 8 people, cos I remember both the A610 **and** the Renault GTA. I don't know why I remember, but I do.
The fact that people like Gordon Murray , Nick Mason and James May , actually bought and paid for NEW GEN
Alpine A110 , tells alot about the purity of the driving experience !!
I wish more manufacturers would take a similar approach
Much prefer a lighter, more nimble and rewarding driving experience to the typical, over weight , over powered cars that seem to be the market norm
Currently I have a classic 2006 Mazda NC Miata MX -5 6 speed manual trany
with a www.flyinmiata.com Intercooled Supercharger set up
Also set up with a www.flyinmiata.com Free flow Dual exhaust, EIBACH lowering springs , thicker sway bars , battery relocated to trunk for better weight distribution
A factory LTD Slip with lower gearing ratio to take advantage and work in harmony with current 240 HP vs stock 160 HP in a 2450 lb car
STUNNING performance with current
Power to Weight set up
Seriously guys you need to stop stalking my life. Radwell, upper Stondon, Greetham with the Fiat 126. I’m expecting you guys to cruise past my dear ol Nans house next. Except that would be strange as it’s at the end of cul de sac in a less desirable part of Hitchin
Years ago I had a nearly New Lotus Elise S2 - round alacantara steering wheel tick☑️ manual gearbox ☑️ comfortable ☑️ air conditioning☑️ special ☑️ etc, ... Alpine - good for a first effort, but not the Daddy 😀😀
Lotus, especially the Exige, are great cars, but as a daily driver the Alpine is much better suited.
@@mkrause8466 I agree, but it's no-ones daily driver - the argument its driven by people with taste, because they have chosen not to buy a Porsche, etc, is nonsense too - the people (outlined in the video) who buy these cars, have Porsches, etc, ASWELL ... Truth be told - it's an old man's Lotus ... That will suit in the garage, and get used once a month by most
As an Alpine owner for over 15yrs, i think we were all a bit upset they didnt use a V6. And even more gutted they didnt actually go ahead with the A110-50 prototype. Thats the best sounding car on the planet, no contest !.
BIG ENGINES R NOT THE FUTURE BUT THE PAST !
@@didierlemoine6771 Yeh ok.... The A110 they should have built. ruclips.net/video/mQvIElMXxQk/видео.html&t=
Carlos Tavares was the Renault executive who launched the new A110 project. Since 2014, he's the CEO of PSA, owner of all the old european Chrysler brands.
I’m one of the “seven others” who remembers. Perhaps that’s why RUclips put this in my feed. Are all your videos as bollocksy as this one? If so I think I’ll subscribe.
According to google David Bellamy is alive and well and is in his mid 80's, did not know about Eddie Jordan's 3 wig collection and the Eldorado Alpine was an awesome car. This Alpine though tries to hard to be retro and looks ugly imho.
This car is the ultimate middle finger to all the manual or nothing car bores who dismiss any car that’s not a manual despite having never driven it. It probably the best drivers car on the market that’s not a back breaking Lotus.
The irony with the infotainment is that the Suzuki Jimny uses the same (re-skinned) operating system, but because it has permanent home, back & volume buttons it's actually easier to use that system in the £18k trucklet than it is in the £45-50k sports car.
Everyone check the A610/TR7 demise from Eldorado. Currently at 298 views.
Loved the review guys just found you today (new subscriber), It was a bit boomy though and a struggle to hear your voices. I will now however troll back through your other videos and see what ive missed.
The audio quality could be better. Use individual mics.
Nobody cares.
Great review! Just wondering which car brands Rich is alluding to that are driven by pricks? 🤔😉😂
When I was a young lad I was a Renault lover. Now I'm an Alfa nut. Maybe I'm just a masochist. Great review, now one of you needs to buy a Vel Satis or Aventine.
My wife would like to explore George Clarke’s dirty spaces.
That air vent is from a Zoe btw, except for the bezel of course.
The 'GTA' that blew up in Eldorado was a dressed up Triumph TR7.
I remember the A10! There was a yellow one in my car park for a while looking very shabby. Renaults interiors fall to bits.
So how tall are you Richard? You spent the whole trip with your head slightly canted over.
I'm 6'3". But I do fit in the Alpine, honest. Richard
Also looks like your kneeis on the aircon controls? Just the camera angle or does the seat need another click?
@@smithandsniff That sounds like the man-logic of a man about to buy a French sportscar.
Wasn't this supposed to be a joint venture between Renault/Alpine and Caterham?? Started development back when Caterham were in F1 I think.
True , but Caterham ran out of money so Renault took over research & development .
Is that not a pimped up Fiat 500 steering wheel I see?? I think it is😳
Who chooses who drives which car?
Keith Livingstone We take it in turns to either book them in, or one of us is too tired/hungover to bother driving.
I remember that like it was yesterday. Was too young to know it was a Renault at the time though
2:13 - why has Richard not got any shoes on 🤔
Is the one dislike from Eddie Jordan?
Or in this case maybe it is?
Bring back Matra next, a modern murena with 3 seats.
Very nearly bought one of those 25 years ago.
I love this thing! I'd buy one if I could! xD
The main reason why it’s not a manual is that the clutch would be too heavy.
The main season it’s not a manual is manuals are too slow. The same car bores who blather on about how wonderful manuals are also care about 0-60 times which are slower with their beloved manual box.
I've got an Alfa. I sort of want one of these.
Marcus Tandy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It needs a gear stick. Otherwise it's perfect.
Yes, if there was one car that would be better in a manual it’s this. Normally can’t stand manual or nothing car bores but in this instance it should at least be an option.
Is it me or do the indicators play popcorn when they are used????
Gareth Noble Yes, they do!
Good to see that you have colour matched your sponsors watch strap choice to the steering wheel stitching. Less good was the camera angle on the initial Start button push - missed the watch from the shot - poor effort, sponsor will not be happy
Gents. Another humorous and insightful review. I’m a massive fan and watch every Friday. Delivered, as ever, with the trademark casualness that only real mates can do. Only small criticism is, and we all have to earn a living, is the shameful flicking of wrists to show the brand that sponsors the channel. It’s good to the see the watch brand referenced at the start and finish of your films and awesome that you’re attracting commercial backing, but to display throughout just undermines the credibility of what you do. As you know, in any other broadcast or print media you’d have to declare it as ad funded because of the gratuitous product shots. What do other viewers think?
Rob Flanagan We don’t gesticulate intentionally - we’re both just animated with our hands. Seriously!
Sure. In all of your brilliant films since the sponsorship began, you have both been wearing the watches and they have been very evident on both of your wrists. I know you both like to animate with your hands. Don’t change that. Perhaps remove the watches during the films, unless you both wearing them is part of the deal?? If so I think you need to declare it? I’m no compliance lawyer and I love your videos. I just think it’s cynical when bright chaps like you have to do that! To reiterate, I don’t have any issue with people making money and it’s great you picked up sponsorship so soon after your amusing vid asking for it. I think you’re both better than having to wear those watches because of an contract
Rob Flanagan To be completely honest Rob it is part of our sponsorship to wear the watches when we film. Aquadive’s sponsorship allows us now to at least break even once the pro editing is paid for. Doing a weekly vid for no profit is no easy feat.
Fair enough. And as I said; love the work and long may it continue. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I find the overly gratuitous sponsor product shots rather amusing personally. The opening bit with the writing on the hand was particularly well done. It's obvious enough that the vids are sponsored, certainly way more than when you see products in say, a television program or a film, so I don't think disclosure is really an issue that needs further addressing.
I'm still waiting for a bit where one of them rolls up a sleeve to check the time and reveals they're wearing 3 or 4 watches though.
Marcuuuusss had an A610
Faberlicious !

🥰Alpine
Was just about to say "Eldorado"!!!!!!!
MARCOOOOOUS!
Congratulations! You’ve just qualified for a very exclusive club ;-)
Guys! I couldn't finish this video because of a super high-pitched noise throughout the entirety of it. I know this noise because I also watch HubNut. It's an Olfi-camera noise and it cannot be heard by everyone (because aging ears, blah-blah) but it's really bad for people who can hear it. I can send you a slowed down sample of the audio so you can hear for yourself.
Weirdly I always wondered how you managed to get the audio to sound good with Hubnut's Ian always encountering problems with these Olfi cameras, even when replacing them. Maybe you used a seperate audio recorder? If you changed that now, I suggest changing back.
Great review guys, but I still prefer my 987 Cayman, as no bits of trim fall off!
Interesting observation, my Alpine is solidly built and no bits have fallen off...
But thankfully an Alpine hasn't got an Ims bearing ready to shit itself.
Shocker you prefer the car you bought, strangely most people think that.
Genuinely this as been my favorite car from the last few years, I'd buy one immediately if it was offered in the states. What a fantastic little beast, built so smart. Glad y'all could review it.
That blue accent on the top of the steering wheel and position of the red ‘spoartah’ button, gives it a bizarre resemblance to my Logitech G29 racing wheel. Look it up.
As is the way these days, too much bias on your attempts at stand-up comedy detracts from the subject matter
Nice review, you pretty much nailed it. I use mine every day and it's a lovely place to be. Handling worries? Not really, it's very balanced and easy to adjust - the car feels like it rotates right under the seats when you play with it. I don't know how the press cars came out, but from the factory, the tyre pressures were on 'economy' and the car was too edgy - on normal pressures the feel is transformed. Love it. Complaints? The indicator 'clicking' sounds really cheap :-)
The indicators sound like a horses hooves on tarmac its a clip-clop rather than than a tick
I imagine the upshift sound as some overtly arrogant French engineer caulking to himself.
Another quality vid. Instant annoyance when I spotted the centre console is out of alignment with the screen/controls. French cars...
What a bizarre thing to give a fuck about.
Carbon fibre trim in or on a car, real or fake, if only for decoration is utterly wrong. It smacks of sticky backed plastic 'carbon fibre' applied by a youth to their first car.
However, slightly flimsy plastic trim in a French car is somehow charming, as if saying "this car is intended to last as long as bottle of wine, or this season's fashion..."
Greatest into ever
What a load of waffle
Welcome to the whole point of these videos.
I love this channel because of the banter however this episode because of it is a noise box they are driving, is not so good as to why anybody would want to buy one these cars...no idea.
Loving driving is a start...
Because it's bloody wonderful, that's why. I didn't honestly find the road noise an issue when I drove one.
Have you driven one?
