Open Or Neutral Stance Tennis Forehand? Pros & Cons

    The question that I get often is whether one should play more open stance or more neutral stance forehands.
    The open stance forehand has been quite fashionable in the last years because TV commentators and tennis coaches have been pointing it out a lot and some have even suggested that you should play open stance forehands all the time since that's the modern game now.
    If you observe the pros carefully you will see that that's not the case and that they use a stance that's just the most comfortable and effective for the situation they are in.
    You will learn for which situations is the open stance most effective and for which ones you should use a neutral stance.
    Hopefully that will put your mind at ease but if not feel free to ask any question you have about stances.

    Thank you so much for all your excellent videos! I have taken private tennis lessons for many years, but lately I feel I have been learning MUCH more, just from watching your videos! My forehand and serve have improved A LOT over the past few months.

    Quite a few videos casually mention the different stances as part of forehand or backhand technique, but without explaining what the stances actually are and when to use them, glad this one did! Very useful.

    Excellent Analysis as always! You hit on every point! Today you need to know how to hit several forehands and then feel your way when you're in a match. It's actually a lot of fun to hit a short ball to these modern "power hitting" base-liners and watch them try to deal with it. Also, I'm a little jealous that you're outside wearing short sleeves, it's 5 degrees where I'm at, LOL.

    You are a Guru who knows how to explain and make things easy enough to understand touching fundamentals of physics and biomechanics. I am from India where very few people know or follow tennis. And hence, no wonder, why we don't get good tennis instructors here. But with your lessons and techniques I am improving daily. I daily watch your one or the other videos. Thanks a lot for all the generous knowledge.

    Thank you very much sir for this, Everytime I step into the court I do not put these things in mind I have a good forehand 2hand backhand but the stance I always forget about this, Then I watched this video and apply it on court then voila I'm much consistent with open stance and I do agree with the 'torque' thing as you rotate your hip with the open stance unlike in neutral at some point when I go close stance I rely much on my arm's power which makes my arm's hurt.     I am not sure that I agree 100% regarding the power. I feel like the open stance is generally used when the ball you receive is close to the baseline and you don't have as much time to set up. Otherwise if one has enough time then it might be better to set up in the neutral stance and unload on the ball. Of course I am not a pro so take that with a grain of salt.

    Particularly with the wind coming towards you, the speed of the ball can be so high off the bounce, that it is only possible play using an open stance. (It took me a while to get that yesterday :))

    Thank you Tomaz for never talking down to us (students of the game) and explaining both intellectually and
    physically what has to happen. Having been refused private lessons once because I asked too many questions
    and this upset the coach. He was the pro and I should just do as I was told. Your instructions are perfect for me.
    Please can you sometimes mention Doubles, when there's a difference in tactics or positioning? And I do admire
    how consistent your left arm is. If only!

    If you have time to hit the ball, use close stance or semi close. For fast coming balls, use open stance with load/unload.

    Damn the mechanics of the body are confusing. You would think it would be easier seeing that we all have a body to figure out how it works.

    I find the 45 degrees stance uncomfortable.

    This is the way Andy Murray had problems to the waist.
    When you're open the rotation comes from the shoulders first.

    Use open stance if u have more time for shot. use nutural stance to hit w quick reflex. Theres no correct stance. Answer is its all depends on situation.
