    What I admire about your coaching is that you take away your emotions if you don't get the desired result and change how you teach depending on how you read the player.

    Thanks for sharing this Patrick! As someone who plays competitive tennis with virtually no vision in my left eye, I found this extremely useful. On my backhand side, I can so easily hit closed but always struggle on the forehand side (including serves and volleys). I've always known it was because of my vision but nice to hear it validated from a true professional! :)

      Backhand open stance --> Only if you´re righty and your dominant eye is your left or if you´re lefty and your dominant eye is your right. In the case you´re righty and your dominant eye is your right, your forehand should be open stance.

    As a right eye dominant person, this might explain why I always preferred open stance forehands. It might also explain why I prefer batting left handed at cricket, even though I'm right handed. Thanks coach, I learned something new.

    I had to chuckle at the end where Patrick says, if you hit with a closed stance (backhand) "she can hit you." It reminds me of when I was at camp (in the '70's) and when I was flipping my wrist (a no-no back then) my instructor said he was going to tape an ice pick to my wrist to make me stop doing it. Today I appreciate the topspin I generate with it. Times change...so does technique (and equipment).

    Nice one! Didn't realize the dominant eye concept, until tested it myself. Turn out i'm like her, having left eye dominant.
    Coming from 1HBH, where usually on the run can only hit it with closed stance, i did the same on 2HBH. But then i felt my contact was late. Trying more open stance on my 2HBH, and the contact feels more natural. Now i need the footwork pattern and power source to hit it better 😆😆

    Very interesting video. I remember that one of my coaches back then asked me to determine my dominant eye. I'm a right eye dominant player with an open stance FH and a closed stance one-handed BH. I guess that works! Since Dominic Thiem is one of the very few players who often hits one-handed BH with an open stance, I wonder if he does it because he's left eye dominant.

    Hello Patrick. I have learned a lot from your videos. They were recommended by my teacher. Please, I'm right-handed and my dominant eye is right. I was having trouble with the forehand because I was catching the ball tight/late (backhand was always easier for me). So I started prioritizing the forehand in open stance and it solved my problem, however hitting dead/short balls is not always very viable in open, and it also ends up being a strategy that is more tiring and can cause hip/spine pain (hitting all of them in open ). Would it be a good idea to use the eastern grip to hit the forehand in closed stance in my case? Would eastern help me not to delay the beat? Can you please suggest a good solution for when hitting semi-closed or closed stance?

    In addition to playing tennis I did many years of taekwondo, a kicking-oriented martial art. One thing I learned from TKD is that people have dominant legs as well as dominant hands and eyes. Almost every martial artist will prefer to load and balance on one leg and kick with the other (I would assume you would see this in soccer too). I think that has an impact on tennis footwork. As a lefty I preferred to fight right-side forward, load on my left leg, and kick with my right. In tennis I like open-stance forehand and closed-stance backhand because that keeps my left leg as being the stabilizing leg. Unfortunately I am right-eye dominant so maybe I should try to switch to an open-stance backhand but because of the leg issue it’s not easy for me.

    Unfortunately, I’m afraid you got the eye test wrong. The girl in this video is right eye dominant instead of left eye. I encourage everyone to look up the test in the internet. By looking at the comments, I see a lot of people wrongly believed their non-dominant eye is the dominant one. That is why I leave a comment here. (I left a similar comment yesterday and was deleted.)
    Of course, open stance or not and its benefit had a lot to do than just the player’s dominant eye. So this is still a useful video. Just don’t believe in everything said in this video before verifying it.
    Hopefully, this comment won’t get deleted this time.

  • @gindio1
    @gindio1 2 года назад +8

    I am a little skeptical about this theory that the dominant eye makes a huge difference in what kind of stance you chose to hit the ball. If you look at the players head when she is hitting in closed vs open stance, her head is in pretty much the same position, so she will be seeing the ball with her left eye equally good or bad. Open stance has its many advantages, but seeing the ball better is probably the least important one.

    • @victorious1177

      Sometimes it's not about making a "huge" difference immediately (esp at this high level). It's about making an adjustment that maximizes your edge, even if it's marginal. In the long term that can be huge.

    Hello Patrick. Great video. My 5 yr old son Max has started playing tennis. Would it be better for him to hit FH on same side as his dominant eye ex. If Left eye dominant then hit FH w/ left? I suspect he is left eye dominant but currently hits FH w/ right. However his left is as strong as his right according to his Coach. So I think he could swtich FH easily to his left. I am concerned it will be harder for him to adjust his right handed, 2 hand BH for left eye dominance than to adjust a left handed FH for left eye dominance. What do you think? Just want him to enjoy tennis as much as possible. Myself I am left eye dominant and have lots of problems hitting my right handed one hand BH :), as I lose track of the ball and open stance is tough w/ one hander. Thanks.

      Probably best, as most players have a better forehand than backhand…also, as shown here, you can still take a shorter backswing on the backhand side, so I am assuming it is easier to hit good backhands with nondomiant eye, whereas forehand requires a bigger backswing.

      Patrick has a video on eye dominance on the Serve. If you are a right fe and right eye dominant you shouldnt do a Federer type of throw (to the side) you will turn your head to much and coil to much and lose sight of the ball at contact. Fed is left eye dominant, that's why it works for him and not for a lot of people who try to copy him.

    • @miguelbarahona6636
      @miguelbarahona6636 2 года назад +1

      Serve: throw the ball over your dominant eye (of course a bit in front if it´s a flat serve, a bit to the right if it´s a slice serve and a bit over your head if it´s a kick serve - for righties). 1HBH, keep using closed stance (if the pace of the rally allows it) and follow the incoming ball with the tip of the nose (that will prevent your nose blocking your dominant´s eye field of view)

      If your dominant eye and your dominant hand are on the same side of the body, no problem with closed stance 1HBH. In fact, in this case, it should be your most natural shot. Examples: Wawrinka, Gasquet. Federer is crossed eye dominant (his dominant eye is the left), he had to work on watching better the ball, that´s why he keeps his head still on each shot. A tennis tip: your nose should point to the incoming ball (this prevents your nose blocking your dominant´s eye field of view).

  • @mistermj651
    @mistermj651 2 года назад +2

    PM is a tremendous coach and looks to draw out the last 5% of elite players (which can make all the difference) ... but this dominant eye theory is 100% overcoaching/nit-picking and finding a new "reason" for commonplace problems. A player doesn't want a closed stance because it can restrict the hips and limit power generation. Also, early preparation and movement are hugely important - so of course, hitting with a very closed stance prevents the ability to get both IN and BACK into proper position. I mean, look at the drills they're doing in the video - the balls are thrown far left (e.g. backhand crosscourt from the other side) so it's not like the gal has time to take that extra step into a closed position. It's two-big-steps-and-swing over and over again ... there's just not enough time to take the third step for the closed stance. So this has nothing to do with dominant eye bunk - it's all about being able to put yourself in proper hitting position and position your feet to generate the right power/timing AND then having the correct footwork to return back to the middle. So this video is really about efficiency of movement - taking LESS steps to hit just as cleanly.

      Why? As long as you know what you are you can make way with it right? I am a righty and right eye dominant. Fh open stance and backhand closed. It is funny because that indeed (without knowing I was right eye dominant) is the way I have been hitting balls ever since I was a kid.

    • @imrizzle83
      @imrizzle83 2 года назад +1

      @@sergiosimbula you’re correct but when you’re a kid unless your coach is really aware of it they never talk about eye dominance. So as a right eye dominance I can have a closed BH but should ideally have an open stance on FH - I’ve worked so much on closed stance FH for power that I only use open stance on very wide shots or on the run. Typically I find BH much more consistent even though it’s my weaker shot. So to answer your question, I think it would be great to have that additional comfort on my strongest weapon (FH) not to mention the benefits left eye dominance can give for a righty serve (I.e. Federer)

    • @sergiosimbula
      @sergiosimbula 2 года назад

      I understand your point. Yes you are 100% right. In my case I might have been lucky or it was intuition I don't know. But it might be worth it to still make the adjustments. Because actually what you are saying... Closed stance for more power don't necessarily make much sense. When I was a kid I would hit open stance out of laziness and would almost fall back, but nowadays and just look at the pros... With open stance you can actually generate more power. Having a much wider stance, be lower. Use the legs a lot more. Loading the back leg and transfer weight foreword through the shot. With the more traditional closed the stance you don't get this. It also depends a lot on your grip of course. Semi western lends itself for open stance and the traditional eastern grip goes with the closed stance. If you have a semi western grip AND are also right eye dominant I would definitely try to start using the open stance. And of course I do and every pro does to hit closed stance sometimes like when you hit a forehand approach.

    I love PM and find his technique tips better than anyone else. But this dominant eye thing as why a person with normal vision can or can't hit/serve a ball standing a certain way... I think is complete baloney.

  • @TennisHacker
    @TennisHacker 2 года назад +2

    No just no! When you look at the ball, you will be using both eyes and binocular vision.
    There are so many other visual skills that create issues on court.
    Without fully assessing someones vision it makes no sense to blame a timing issue on eye dominance.

    it's not the good term. He tells about the guiding eye, not the dominant eye. The dominant eye is the one that disturbs the vision the most if it is disturbed. It is the same eye most often but it is not obligatory

      You´re right, because your dominant eye sometimes is not the eye that sees better. I have a simple solution: watch the ball with both eyes (try not to block any of them, with your nose).

    Dominant eye? Oh coaches are Podiatrists now? That dominant eye stuff is bunk. Also, you CANT hit every backhand with a closed stance. You can’t every every backhand with an open stance. Offensive backhands are closed (more time) and defensive are open. (Less time) Now I absolutely KNOW that Patrick is incapable of building a player from scratch. Look at the ATP and WTA match videos. Players must do BOTH. ALSO. You CANNOT hit backhand approach shots with an open stance. Sorry not convinced that Patrick is THE coach.

      You always have a dominant eye. 70% of population have same side dominance (right hand-right eye or left hand-left eye). 30% have a crossed dominance (right hand-left eye or left hand-right eye). Federer has a crossed dominance.
