Great points in this video. I think Hot Toys dropped the ball by not truly going “all in” with the Artisan line. They should’ve set the ground rules from the start. For example: “all artisans will have rooted hair, leather clothing, actual numbered figures w/ certificate, and totally new sculpts instead of reusing old ones.”
Sadly, it seems some artisan figures will be better than others when it comes to the longevity of the materials and truly unique features that make them stand out from older figures.

I 100% believe they needed to go all in on this line to make it seem worthwhile. The shortcomings of just the Anakin announcement was pointed out by you perfectly. It’s their most up to date and artsy Anakin and yet it’s still not the definitive version

It's literally the old figure just the head and hair is updated. It's tbh a cheap release. Redo his costume and body like Joker, who seems like the only "all in" artisan so far

I personally don’t think 5 artisans is a lot but more than that we will be collecting preorders. I don’t believe it’s going to fail because hot toys is 10 steps ahead of collectors and they know the competition (Inart). I do believe the first two releases will determine future releases because it’s going to show is hot toys can deliver a good product (Artisan)on time.

    • @mr.momcollectibles

Ultimately, I just feel like I don’t want it to be a situation where they’re adding so many pre-orders versus putting out figures, especially at these price points and seeing what we’re actually getting and how they vary from figure to figure. If the joker and the Anakin Skywalker come out and the quality is superb then their shows hope for this artist and series line, but they really do have to step up and really make collectors feel like they’re getting a lot for the price pay

It's a great point you make about the cost tbh. This is what is currently putting me off the line (although I have Anakin already paid up). The price of the figure is the same price as secondary market "grails" in some cases, and all we're really getting thats different is some wool hair. But hopefully the end product is going to far exceed expectations so I'm definitely looking forward to it. I ordered the non-artisan deluxe when it recently opened because of the proposed details along with a dozen or so older vids on the existing DX model. I like detailed bases because I don't own many HT figures nor do I seek a complete series of figures.

Artisan releases are still limited quantities, and they can only be flipped so much. As long as HT doesn't start doing Artisan 2.0's, the artisan line will continue to sell out and be often preferred. Prices were already high to begin with. Year after year HT prices on standard figures were would steady climb and I remember when people got real whiney about crossing that $250 average threshold. The artisan releases are more collectible in limited numbers, and as long as they execute well, they will be the premium of whatever characters they introduce within it. It's really just as simple as knowing a new Barr has been set. I myself look forward to converting everything I own into a Artisan, Rooted Inart, Kojun Works etc for the added realism. The inconsistencies between a standard scuplt and a well done rooted scuplt with posable eyes takes its toll on some of us that are more detail oriented than others.. I'm in that camp. Price points are a factor, sure, but we can all agree $5000 is still $5000 at the end of the day. It's doesn't really matter if it's isolated in a few ultra premium pieces or 20 various troopers. Both scenarios have an impact and make a statement on display. That's also just another side of being collectors doing what we do.

I would like Hot Toys to really commit if they’re going to keep on trying with the Artisan line.
One thing that bothers me with them more and more is that it feels like they’ll upgrade one thing and in their view that justifies a higher price, but they still use lower quality materials (pleather) or reuse the same parts over and over.
I primarily collect Hot Toys so still a fan but they do make aggravating decisions often.

The only Artisan figure I wanted wasn’t even an Artisan. It was the DCEU Wonder Woman.
But honestly…after taking a step back and realizing that I didn’t need to upgrade from the original BvS Wonder Woman (I’m one of the ten people left in the world who adore that figure), nor did I need to migrate to the upcoming Affleck Batman 2.0 from BvS that was recently announced.
That one almost tempted me to try and jump on getting both, somehow, some way. I resisted though. I want to focus my collection more on Star Wars going forward. Even though I plan to dial way back on collecting at some point in the near future, I’ll still pick up the occasional figure though.
As for the Artisan line as a whole, I didn’t feel the need to replace the Inart sculpted hair Joker (I mean, he just came out, the hell lol) or the Hot Toys Jack Sparrow. I have the most recent DX Jack Sparrow with the better tricorn hat from the DX release prior to that one. So, I’m good. And Artisan Anakin and Luke just don’t interest me. I prefer my original Episode 3 Anakin and I’m opting out of that Luke entirely, although I will admit he’s awesome as fuck looking.
If I were going to get one Artisan figure, it would probably be the Wonder Woman I mentioned, assuming they ever do her again. But then, I’d have to upgrade Batman as well. Not sure I’d upgrade my Man of Steel Superman, because he’s pretty badass as is.
I just really don’t see any desire for me to try and jump on ordering a figure that’s as difficult to get as the Neca Turtles when they first came out.

Going by the prototypes, the rooted hair on these figures falls some way short of what we're seeing from Inart. While it's a big improvement from the plug-in synthetic hair which Hot Toys has used in the past, I'm not convinced it will be worth the extra money over the sculpted options. Time will tell I suppose.
Pivoting a little, even though I have the new Joker on pre-order, my enthusiasm dampens the more I see of it. Outside of the makeup, it looks very little like how Heath Ledger appeared in the film and stills, and is by far the weakest likeness of all these Artisan figures. For some reason, Hot Toys has really struggled to capture Heath's portrait, getting nowhere near as close as they have to the likes of Yondu, Jack Sparrow, DX18 Darth Maul, and many more of their most accurate works.
