Set Up Windows 11 With Only A Local Account

- ➕ Setting up a Windows 11 machine without a Microsoft Account is possible, just not in the least bit obvious.
➕ Windows 11 with only a local account
To set up Windows 11 with only a local account, select “Set up for personal use” during setup, then “Sign in” at the Microsoft account prompt. Enter “no@thankyou.com“, or the email address of any locked Microsoft account, as the email, a random password, and proceed despite the error. You can then create a local account with a username, password, and security questions.

Still possible, just well hidden.
On Windows 11 Pro you can also just choose the work account option and then just choose domain and it will let you create a local account

This worked perfectly!! Spent 2 days fighting this trying to set up 2 pc's for a clothing store. They don't use Microsoft. What a pain. You solved my problem in 5 min.
Thank You!!
Just tried, and did not work. After "oops something went wrong", when you hit next button, it brings you back to " Let's add your Microsoft account". I tried it four times.I don't know what to do next.

It's possible it will still work on new machines, as computers sold in stores have Windows 11 versions from six months ago when they were manufactured. If you are doing a fresh install from a new Windows 11 ISO, it is likely patched.
This worked like a charm! I didn't realize the old bypass no longer worked, glad there is a solution.

Worked for me, I used nothanks as the password, got the oops message and continued, but no other screens beyond that, I can always change the privacy settings from settings.
Lmao, did not realise it was this easy to bypass 😂 thanks
Unfortunately I'm trying in late June and it no longer works. Try the email address and a password but i keep end up coming back to the login screen. Thanks anyhow.
Set up a NEW win 11 laptop just yesterday that NO work around worked on. Had to use an old dummy account and then change out the Administrator account. I spent 5 friggin hours on that Microturd to get it Cleaned out.
If you don't want security questions, leave the password blank. Voila! No security questions. Once set up, you can go into settings and add a password.
is this still an option if i only have a digital key for windows? my guess is that as soon as i activate with my real microsoft account, it will change the login type
additional question: i just purchased an nvme drive and plan to have a clean windows install on it. will i be able to duel boot from my current drive? (so that i can access anything i currently have installed and setup while i am transferring across). even if it isnt a proper duel boot and i have to change the boot drive in bios each time i want to access it, that would be fine. (windows 10 for both drives btw, as my cpu isnt supported by 11)
Microsoft does "encourage" using the Microsoft account when you sign in to other services, so I would assume activation counts as well. However it's always been an option, so be careful to watch the messages and options available as you do so.
I just setup a new laptop with a local account only by clicking the Create account instead of putting in any email address and it worked. It did not ask me to actually create a microsoft account. Not sure if this would work for everyone. I wanted an account without it being attached to One Drive and the file path to user\onedrive. I uninstalled One Drive completely. Now I can login with my Microsoft account without having to use One Drive, now everything is saved locally on the laptop.
This doesn't seem to work anymore. Could someone else verify? I ran into an issue with Win11 virutal machines where the no@thankyou trick kept bouncing back to the signin rather than continuing to a local account.
Exactly - MS has gotten wise to the fake email trick. I'm looking for the new solution now as well.
@@floridapctutor It's great how Microsoft respects the wishes of their customers.🙄
to me what worked is to not chose a personal account and to choose a work / school account, and then when it tell you to enter an email you select something like "sign in using another way" and then something like "select domain" and then i entered local account information and it went through.
Hi, I have done his before, however m/s bullies as of 9th July 2024, they have stopped local accounts now, it keeps coming up something went wrong. It's amazing how they are so desperate to take control. Some what similar to a couple of guys I went out with. Lol Just had to throw that in.😊
It now allows you to click on the link "I don't have Internet" to proceed with local account. Not sure why now Microsoft allowed you to do that now.
How can i remove or delate mistakenly signed on windows 10/11?
Tom, Dick and Harry approves this video😅
Leo do you recommend we use pc with only local or with microsoft?
It's not a strong recommendation, and I do both myself on different machines, but in general: MS Account.
Thank you for your answer 😊
I have had clients on multiple occasions using a Microsoft account and it will randomly stop working and says your password is wrong. Then you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to reset it with Microsoft. What a pain. Also, I don't want to have to connect to Microsoft just to log onto my computer. No thanks to MS account sign-on.
Hi Leo,
I have a question, what will happen if I already have a local account(Administrator) with Windows 10 Home and I want to upgrade to Windows 11 Home for free via "Windows Update", will I still have my local account with Windows 11 like I did under Windows 10?
Thanks.
You should, yes.
You will have to log in to Win11 properly.
Thanks Leo. I went ahead and opted for a Microsoft account.
I'm still on Windows 10, but will probably have to switch to W-11 in the future. I'm a little confused with accounts -- I use a "local user" (non-admin) account on my PC. I'm not signed in to my Microsoft account, but I use Office 365, so I must be signed in somewhere in order to use it. What you showed in this new video -- is that different than the "Local User" type of account I'm using? Thanks!
If it's an email address, then it's likely NOT a local user. If it's just a username (like "leon" in my examples) then it's likely a local user account.
@@askleonotenboom Yes -- I have local accounts (my name, or variations of it, not email). Also, when I go to settings/accounts, it says "local account". Now I'm trying to figure out if I update to Win 11, will it delete my 2 local accounts ....

OK so what to do if we have signed in and want to get out of it! I created a local account, but I created a second sign on and I signed into a University account (using office 365) and now it's on my PC, can I avoid it?
Not sure what you're really asking, but "Sign Out" is an option alongside shutdown and reboot. You can then sign in to whatever account you want that's on your machine.
the biggest problem whit the security questions are that its 6 out of 6 easily googleble questions.
Like I remember when I at a company where my user is my first and sure name and on the password creation was meet whit please insert 3 security questions.
all 3 been easily googleable.
thats a masive problem I say.
now If and I seen many other places where that's the solution of write 3 questions and 3 answers.
And it had a good list of suggestion/topics.
Like whats your First X, (and a note that was not something that can be easily googleable so dont use car but use stuff like a movie you watched or the oldest Cinema move not the name of the cinema thats easily googleable).
Is another way possible? Will another or easier option be given if try to setup without an internet connection?
yes, if it can't find the internet during install, it instead takes you directly to create a local account.
THANKS@@MarkWhich
Found the new workaround on Reddit. Perform the following steps before the RUclips procedure.
Setup Windows 11 until you get to the Microsoft Account creation screen.
Press the Windows + R keys to open Run dialog, then type "ms-settings:recovery" (you might need to click around to get the Run Prompt to appear)
Select Reboot Now on Advanced Startup option. The unit will reboot to recovery mode.
Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart. This gives us access to the advanced options during restart.
Once the Advanced Options appear, select option 7 - Disable Driver Signature Enforcement. The unit will reboot back into OOBE with the ability to use CMD.
Follow Instructions from above Video

It should.
Microsoft is gone crazy by implementing the new policy
Doesn't seem to work for me, it just kicks me back to the sign in page over and over.
No longer works as of May 2 2024 . Goes back to sign in page.
im assuming you can still activate if you have a key?
Activation is unrelated to your login account. (But yes.)
It doesn't work for me.
yes, but how about a new laptop with win11 already installed..how do you not have to set up a microsoft account?
Can you do this with upgrading from Win10 to Win11? My updates keep telling me to update to windows 11 but I dont want to unless I can avoid the stupid windows account BS.
You should be able to. At worst you might need to follow the instructions in the video if it tries to force you to use a Microsoft Account.
It is NOT BS, not at all. And nobody should be telling you it is. A grave disservice, indeed.
@@Drew1903SG It is to me. I don't want to sign into a Microsoft account to use my personal desktop computer that I own and paid for.

What gets synced in case of a Microsoft account?
If one does use a Microsoft account (e g. Hotmail), does it sync properly moving on, meaning all the info like Profile Photo, Account name etc will be in sync between PC and web?
Also, why do people recommend setting up PC with a local account instead of a Microsoft account?
I don't think in Windows 10 it's difficult setting up a local account. Why it's different in Windows 11?
If you use a Microsoft account things like profile pictures and such get synced. Signing in to Hotmail is separate, unrelated to how you sign in to Windows. Some people don't like the additional intrusiveness of a Microsoft account, or the way Microsoft is pushing it so hard.
"I don't think in Windows 10 it's difficult setting up a local account. Why it's different in Windows 11?"
Correct. But in Windows 11, Microsoft has made it more difficult to circumvent their insistence that everyone use a Microsoft account.
"Also, why do people recommend setting up PC with a local account instead of a Microsoft account?"
Many people (myself included) do not want to be at the mercy of a Microsoft server.
If Microsoft should have a service outage, and you can't get a green light from Microsoft when you are logging in, you could get locked out of your own computer.
If you have no internet service, perhaps due to an outage in your area, you do not want to get locked out of your own computer.
Yes, you will still be able to login. But for how long, or for how many times, before Windows deem it that you must get permission from their servers?
Microsoft will collect even more of your personal data from your computer, when you sign in to a Microsoft account.
It is none of Microsoft's business (or any stranger's business) when you login to your computer.
Microsoft appears to be moving to a "You own nothing" business model.
They push their Office suite, via a rental. Now they are working towards you renting your operating system, where you need their permission to use your own computer that you paid for (you paid for the hardware and for a Windows license, and yet you still need Microsoft's permission to login).
With a local account, you will never be locked out of the computer and operating system that you paid for; that you own.
By the way, our host created a local account, which by default, is an administrator account.
I recommend that you then use that account, to create yet another account; a standard user account, and never use the administrator account again, except for a rare need.
Using your computer with administrator privileges can cause you to inadvertently mangle your computer, because you will have permission to make egregious mistakes.
#3. Because Windows has tightened things up to not allow people to get away with these signanigans.
#2. Nobody ever should recommend that.
#1. Yes. Once you sign in with your MS Account everything syncs straightaway.
no@thankyou Leo!
So if I don't use MS account, do I still get the _free_ 5gb OneDrive storage?
In addition, do I get two sets of free 5gb storage if I have one local and one MS account on the same pc/laptop?
5GB is a Microsoft Account thing. You can still use a local account on your machine, but create or have a Microsoft account online if you like. You won't be able to sync unless you sign in to OneDrive on your PC using your Microsoft account.
@@askleonotenboom As always, thank you for your clarification.
There are heaps of things & funtionality you do not get or have including optimum security.
I already installed with the Microsoft Account. Can I un-do it? Also, does the local account affect installing a new version of Microsoft Word or Excel?
There's no undo other than reinstalling. You can create an additional local account, and switch to using that instead, but the originally created account using your Microsoft account will still exist. Shouldn't affect Office, BUT it'll be very easy as part of that to accidentally enable the Microsoft account, since for those tools you need to sign in to those tools using the MS account.
@@askleonotenboom Thank you. When the Windows 11 was installed with the pre-loaded Word and Excel, those programs only operate in "compatibility mode"- constant "upgrade to 365" popups at every dysfunction. So will having a Windows 11 local account then make any difference?
Does not work win win 11 home as of June 2024.
So just not connecting to the internet doesn't work anymore? On the Windows 10 you could bypass all this by just choosing not to connect to wifi/internet in that question where it asks you to pick an internet connection.

Can you still use microsoft store after switching to local account
Yes, but you'll need to sign in to a Microsoft Account to actually get anything. AND it will "encourage" you to make that the sign-in account for the machine if you're not careful.
@askleonotenboom thank you, I'm trying local account on surface pro x after upgrading ssd
The trouble with signing into a Microsoft is that they require your email password. Kaspersky has warned me before about using the same password for both accounts. If I try to sign into Microsoft with a separate password, it's rejected. I think that Kaspersky is right here.
MS does not know, want or care about your Password. What an outrageous thing to think or say❗ The address & P/W are used to sign-in to YOUR account, the P/W goes nowhere (else). Once signed in use a PIN or biometrics for all future log-ins.
@@Drew1903SG On Windows 10, I tried to sign into Microsoft and "only" my email password worked. On Windows 11, I've shut off their Copilot and with Britec09's privacy video have shut down all telemetry that Microsoft is collecting (spying) on us from all their apps and eliminated all the bloatware that's installed on the system. Microsoft is truly a "MALICIOUS" company, they have locked out my D drive. A D drive that I ordered and "paid" for on my Dell XPS 8960 PC. It cost me $3,280.13 Canadian to have it customized to the way I want, Microsoft didn't pay one red cent. The joke is on them as I only use external hard drives and I have Kaspersky Premium keeping an eye on them.
