    I am a developer and MS is making up excuses about this. For MS, using an online-connected account is a way to steal your data. Syncing settings and files are just a side benefit they are trying to amplify. MS thinks we are stupid but everyone know the same on Android. Android at least let me sync all important settings but Windows does not. I have dozens of computer logged into a test online account and the settings are NEVER correctly synced, especially those privacy-related settings... Even Edge browser syncing is really half baked. Google is 100x better than this and they respect what I select and de-select. It's this reason that I am more willing to log into an Google account on an Android device than I am with Microsoft account on Windows systems. Still a big no for me.

    For the last few years, when I have to install Windows on a computer, I use a Microsoft account for the install, then once the install is complete, I create a local account with administrator privileges. Once I have logged into the local account, I delete the Microsoft account from that computer. I suppose that still gives Microsoft a link that ties my identity to that particular computer, but at least they are not tracking my every move when I'm using the local account. At least I hope not. I also use the Brave browser and a VPN for privacy reasons.

    • @_w_w_
      @_w_w_ Месяц назад +2

      UUID of your computer is linked to your MS account. The UUID of your system is transmitted in various ways, so they can still track you.

    • @Lord_Funk
      @Lord_Funk Месяц назад +2

      For example your Windows OEM license key is often tied to the mobo/Motherboard, so if you either bought your windows key legally using a credit card, or your motherboard using a credit card in your name it can all easily be tied to you using the unique identifiers. Just like they can identify the OEM license key only being valid for that motherboard. If you bought it all for cash then it's not so easy to tie it to you that way, but as you said, if you set up your PC using a microsoft account from start, those unique identifiiers are already tied to you, so using a local account from then on is pointless. At least for privacy reasons. Your modems MAC adress is alreday registered that way with microsoft, your motherboard and windows license when installing and setting it up as well, unless you used a local account from start. Still your inteternet connection can be tied to you if you use any broadband service which you pay a subscription for. Only in countries where you could still buy SIM cards and not having to register it you could set up a hot spot on your phone using that SIM card and the connection not being tied to you, if that phone is also bought for cash and never registerd using a carrier subscription. Using a VPN does not make you anonymous. It only makes it so your ISP can not easily see what sites you visit. If you have cookies stored even that does not matter since then the cookies tracks you, no matter what IP adress you connect via google can for example track you if use chrome, microsoft if use edge etc. You need to go through so many hoops to try and have some privacy or at least make it difficult for the same tech company, google, amazon etc to track all your movements. You would need to compartmentalize all your surfing. Use different browsers for different things. Like maybe Chrome only for google/gmail and youtube. Another browser, say Firefox for banking stuff, then yet another browser for say Amazon shopping etc and never accidentally mix them up. That way each tech company can only track what you do on their service, using their browser or sites. Then your ISP can track you unless you use a VPN all the time. However Microsoft is more than a browser, so they can basically track all you do, even your keystrokes. Collect anything they want basically (unless some local laws prohibits it, like some restrictions in eu).The only thing you can try to prevent is microsoft tying it to you as a person, but that ship has already sailed once you set it all up initially using a microsoft account, or when you bought your license key or motherboard using a credit card. Online privacy is more or less dead, unless you use Linux and avoid Chrome, Edge etc and still use a VPN. Also that you did buy the hardware/pc with cash and use a hotspot via a cash SIM card in a country that do not require that you register all SIM cards. More and more western countries pass such laws now (taht all sim cards needs to be registered), so soon that will not be an option anymore. All in the name of "for your security", "for your convenience", "to fight cyber crime or money laundry"...yeah riiite... 🥸
      They are also cracking down on old account created back when you did not have to give out your name, adress, size of underwear etc, by again saying it's for "security reasons". Going to force people to use new verification methods that tie the log-in to you personally. It will come for Outlook/Hotmail in September. No more log-in only using a user name and password. You will need to verify your log-in using other (called more modern) methods of verification tied to you personally. Especailly in countries where every sim card has to be registered in a persons name to even be able to be activated. If you verify the log-in using any sort of phone app or even a code sent to your phone then it will be tied to you in person in those countries, since the sim cards are tied to you there. Like I said privacy is dead, or soon to be. Yes, even in the those countries who's not gone that far yet, but soon will. Like an Orwellian dystopian nightmare.

      I work in tech, in fact, these exact modern communication-enabled device. Trust me, there are sooooo many ways to track you and all it takes is one "positively-connected" identification that slips through and we can build an entire graph of information that can identify someone. I have been a life-long MS fan, but switched to Google instead. Google collects information, but they do things slightly different. Google wants your data and it makes it known, but it asks for permission first, and once you confirm or turn on a possible data collection feature, it will then take your data. Microsoft on the other hand does the opposite, it takes your data first, then pretend it didn't happen with "...oh here is a new feature we turned on by default.." Even if you then turn off that feature, that data was already collected and in many cases sent to mothership. This is the single biggest issue I have with MS lately, and therefore, it would never log into any MS product unless it's absolutely needed for the basic function.
      Case in point of how bad this is - I have location disabled at device-level and app-level. In 90% of the cases, MS doesn't hold a location history on me, but then I found my location history got recorded during a period last year... after much digging, it turns out MS had a "bug" and started taking location data without user consent - it started to store derived location in location history. This kind of crap happens with Microsoft more often than you can imagine.

      What is your definition of fragmentation in the Linux-sphere of things?

    • @robertdeckard2136
      @robertdeckard2136 Месяц назад

      I don't think fragmentation is a real problem. The various distros are mostly the same under the hood. The differences are mostly in the package manager and default desktop environment. I've ran Arch/Gentoo/Debian/Mint on different machines and if there's some new software I want to set up and try out like a local instance of stable diffusion or godot or whatever I can follow the ubuntu install instructions, or a youtube tutorial made by some guy running Windows and it usually works out fine. Also, if it's not in you're package manager, flatpak exists, and if you're a snob like me and don't want to use flatpak, compiling from source is a thing.
      I think the biggest hurdle is lack of knowledge/education. Public school spent 12 years teaching everyone to use microsoft office and powerpoint. If they spent a fraction of that time teaching about bash commands, linux would be pretty easy for most people but they didn't. I used Linux for years without knowing that I could hit ctrl-r to search for prior commands in my bash history or search the man pages with apropos and I only found this knowledge by accident.
      The second biggest hurdle I think is adobe products and games.
      I suppose fragmentation is a perceived problem when someone first starts entertaining the idea of switching to linux but they then realize there's hundreds of distros and they don't know how to choose. My advise to a newcomer is to ask themselves if they absolutely must have photoshop and fortnite. If that's not an option stick to windows. If they'll be fine, then try linux mint. When they learn a bit about bash, maybe writing their own scripts, the terminology(for easier googling), about dotfiles then they can really use any distro they want. Or they can stay on Mint if they prefer. It's popular for a reason.

    • @pedromain
      @pedromain Месяц назад

      fragmentation s**ks, packages are the biggest fragmentation hole, tar.gz files are a nightmare, what do I do with that? hahaha.
      I tried Linux many times and never liked it, found it interesting but never liked. Now im trying Fedora with Gnome, is great!
      The things i've learned, is that us, the regular users, need to ignore people recomending distros like Mint, MX, Garuda, etc. We need to go to the main distros the others distros are based upon and they are Fedora, Arch or Debian, all others are not well mantained. Next thing is choosing the interface like Gnome, Cinnamon, etc. When we understand the workflow of Gnome everything becomes easier, it works with workspaces as the default, not like windows where we minimize things, apps stays maximized and we navigade trough workspaces, not Windows. Distros like Fedora are raw, this can be a problem, it needs codecs, drivers, softwares, personalization, but is better making it your own than trying obscure distros that promise "user friendlyness" without the solidness of Fedora, Arch and Debian. The fragmentation of Linux will end when we the masses choose the winning distro among them and all will eventually orbitate around that particular distro's tech culture. I made my choice, is Fedora, because of it receives updates of new software tech that we dont see on the other two, arch and debian. I hope other regular users like me decide to choose Fedora so we force Linux into being a trustable choice.
      I wish Windows had Gnome btw

    On Windows 11 24H2, the tech giant has decided to force users to provide an OFFICIAL Microsoft account during installation, which might have been registered on another device even if the source device was not Windows-powered - in this case, it would be near impossible to create a local account and it must be connected to the Internet to pass the installation phase.

    I use a Microsoft account. I'm in the Insider Program also, so that shows how much I'm worried about telemetry. The fact is that being on the web, people have to go to pretty extensive measures to stop their information from being sold by someone. Lord knows, Google sells it. Their whole business model is about selling user information. Facebook is about selling use information. Steve Gibson is a security guy but the same applies to privacy. Convenience is the enemy of privacy. Most people do not care. I know I'm the minority viewpoint on here but just know that it takes quite an effort to have privacy on the internet.

I started using HoTMaiL back in the mid 90's when Microsoft was not part of it (before msn hotmail) and still have some really old game stuff tied to those old hotmail accounts, but soon no more hotmail for me. Migrating all those log-ins to other mail services now. A bit of a hassle, but worth it in the end. Should have stopped using hotmail long ago, but been too lazy. That new announcement made me finally get my thumbs out of my butt and leave hotmail even with those old things still tied to them. I have used other servcices for most mail stuff anyway for decades now. Just that I have had those old hotmail accounts activated still due to some old games tied to them. That is about to end. • @Lord_Funk
    @Lord_Funk Месяц назад

    Pretending to suddenly inform people of an option is just a smoke screen which only a fool can't see through. That option to log out of your Microsoft account and use a local account doesn't matter. If you already set up your PC with a Microsoft account that requires new log-in technology basically having to verify who you are irl, there is no point to log out afterwards. Your PC's unique identifier is already tied to you as a person by that time. Totally pointless from a privacy standpoint. Same if you buy your windows license legally and paying with a credit card, then that license is traceable to you and your machine once you activate it. Also you can not even use microsoft store to download stuff without an account. They even removed the legacy video editor in win 10 and replaced it with the new one (clipart or clipchamp or something, I didn't bother to get it)), which requires an account to download it and run it. They do all they can to tie unique identifiers to a person to then be able to harvest all your data and sell to 3rd party as well as share with law enforcement when requested. Privacy + windows is dead. It's been dead for a long time. It's also why they in September will require newer log-in verification methods to tie old accounts created long ago to specific persons (for exampe old hotmail accounts and such). In many countries you can not even buy and activate a cash SIM card and being anonymous, as it has to be verified and registered with the mobile operator before you can use it (laws passed in recent years), so if you tie any type of log-in (like outlook) to a mobile number in those countries, again it can be traced to you. All this is of course pushed unto us under the banner of "for your security", "for your convenience", which of course is balloony. Such a shame so many fall for it, or few even question it. The masses having been slowly cooked/weaned into it without realizing it. Kind of like cooking lobsters or crabs on low heat, gradually turning it up until it's too late. So, it will not matter anymore even if you compartmentalize browsers, like using one browser purely for google and RUclips, another browser for your mail, another browser for your online purchases, another for your bank etc. Microsoft will be able to tie it all to one person and harvest and collect it all tied to you (as a person) due to the Microsoft account. If wanting to keep some privacy using that method (compartmentilize browsers) you need to go Linux, which is not an option for all, since many other big tech companies and banks do not support Linux with their programs and log-ins which many people needs to use in many countries.
    They are all the same, google, adobe, microsoft, apple, banks (in many countries), the list could go on. Always online requirements, needing registration and a log-in. Gone are the days of buying a license with a physical media and owning that license and being able to use the program for as long as it can run on your machine. It's all programs/apps "as live services". All subscription style nowdays. Streaming services, games, O/S on computers or msdartphones, music, apps etc. You own and control nothing. Not even your own privacy and information, unless you move out to an offline log cabin in the woods. Still even there you would need at least a smartphone and a subscription with some operator to access your bank accounts in many countries, since that is the only option available in those countries now. The cashless always online society. It's too late to stop it now. At least in many countries where powerful forces of banks, corporations and governements are pushing this onto people. No other choices/options available. Whole of EU is going to launch the digital EURO in the not too distant future. Some countries are basically already more or less cashless and many shops and banks do not even accept or handle cash anymore. You need swish and other apps to pay via your smartphone, or at least a credit card in your name.
