    • @inspiRational99
      @inspiRational99 3 года назад +10

@@whereschavo3953 I've worked for many years in both public and private organisations. It's such a lazy appraisal of the complexities at play.
Firstly - the government is (more) accountable to the public than a private company.
The checks and balances that can seemingly add dead weight to a bureaucratic organisation are harder to trim given the prevailing motivations.
Secondly - private companies would not develop as readily as they do if they were not backed by an overarching government.
Do you consider how many technological advancements (that you probably take for granted) have been borne from governments subsidising or fully paying for research initiatives?
Thirdly - to avoid mincing words, the point being made is factually true. But for armchair observers, oblivious to the realities of governance structures (private and public) they will passionately agree with such an obvious, seemingly bold statement thinking that a billionaire speaks for them.
It also sounds like he's speaking "off the cuff". But the issues surrounding Packer's tax evasions were already well established so it's unlikely he wasn't well rehearsed on these affairs already. And whilst he speaks to the average person's minimisation of their personal income tax, drawing parallels to his unscrupulous use of offshore tax havens to circumvent the spirit of taxation is a clever trick - which largely fools the average idiot watching that clip.
      ...
Anyways... sorry for the long winded reply. It's hard to find a fellow Liberal voter on the internet that isn't a moron these days.
The party has gone to shit with the Libtard press that stupifies everyone. Including the Lib voter base.

@@inspiRational99 "Secondly - private companies would not develop as readily as they do if they were not backed by an overarching government" this is the most incorrect statement ive ever heard in my life. see what you are is someone whose studied everyones opinion except the one that disagrees with your own.
the government has no inclusion or any involvement with innovations in science and technology, like at all. to think otherwise is foolish. seriously you think the government creates ideas in peoples brain?. whats the last great innovative thing that the government came up with. go ahead ill wait. . . . people create and innovate. government regulates. i think you have a misconception of government as being some ultimate power.
and the part about tax havens actually made me laugh, cause the evidence is all there just look back at history when there was less taxes. this is all statistically factual. more people paid more taxes when the government implemented or had less taxes. the more taxes the government creates the more incentive it creates for people to find loop holes which are all perfectly legal doesnt matter how you FEEL about taxes, what matters is that the economy is better for average working class people when there is less income tax. dont believe me i suspect you know who DR thomas sowell is?. if not i suggest you research some of his findings. and or books..
i would believe a billionare who clearly made something for himself that only the smallest handful of people can do you. you have a higher chance of becoming a professional athlete or entertainer then you do becoming a billionare.
i would believe that guy when he tells me not to trust my government and buy gold and silver, before i trust a government that takes 30% of my income and tells me we need more.
government is important do not get me wrong. for some things anyway. but politicians and the people running the government are not. they bleed tax payers dry and act as if they are a protected class. and can do no wrong. useless bastards.

I saw this exchange when it happened. Mr Packer clearly knew his business and that is why he was such a success. His responses to the committee just confirmed that many had little understanding of what they were trying to achieve. He was a very generous man, one such example was when he gave 2.5 million dollars to the NSW Ambulance Service following his heart attack to fund a defibrillator in every Ambulance. Vale Mr Packer.

He was very well respected and it is a massive loss to this Great country of ours to not have Kerry with us now. He would have definitely taken the Government to task and we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today. He would have made a Great Prime Minister, but he was too smart for that, and realized that he could do more good from the private sector running channel 9 and using his influence through the media to wake us up to the madness that the Government was leading us into. "You have guidelines, and you have changed them. You've twisted them around in response to pressure from journalists. Now, you know, there are people out there who want to invest in this country. And they want to invest in it because they think it's a stable, decent country. The performance we have seen and the attempted hijackings of this company, in this performance, have taken people who I know over there who are saying, "Why would anyone invest in Australia? The laws get twisted and changed, the whole structure gets moved around depending on whether they like the colour of your eyes or not.... the clients that they have are worth hundreds of billions of dollars. And they're saying, 'Nobody could carry on like these people. It's not possible.' Now that's the damage you're doing, changing the rules every single day."
    ...
"Since I grew up as a boy... there must be ten thousand new laws been passed. And I don't really think it's that much better a place. ... If you want to pass a new law, why don't you only do it when you've repealed an old one? ... Every time you pass a law, you take somebody's privileges away from them."
    ...
"There's nothing wrong with minimizing tax. I don't know anybody who doesn't minimize their tax."
    _________
This exchange, reminiscent of Hank Rearden's trial in _Atlas Shrugged,_ is a perfect illustration of the chasm between the thinking of bureaucrats and businessmen. Politicians and legislators keep creating new laws, because if they don't, they feel like they're doing nothing. They _love_ having those laws with their names on them (Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, etc.) But they almost never repeal old laws. The _cost_ of the ever-increasing burden of legislation is something they never consider. Bureaucrats also seem to think that figuring out ways to reduce your tax burden is "unpatriotic." They don't look at it from a business point of view, where if you don't take every advantage that you possibly can, you will lose out to competitors who do. If there are loopholes in the tax system that allow some people to take advantage of them, it's the government's job to come up with a tax system that doesn't have those loopholes. But it's also necessary to keep in mind that the more you tax your own country's businesses, the greater the advantage you give to foreign businesses. If only bureaucrats and politicians had a grasp of the fundamentals of Austrian economics... but now I'm just dreaming. That will only happen when the _masses_ have a grasp of Austrian economics, and now we're talking pure fantasy, unfortunately.
Another problem with government types is that they think that the solution to any problem is more legislation, i.e., coercion. They never seem to grasp the simple concept embodied in Aesop's fable of the wind and the sun: the more you try to coerce people to do something, the less likely they are to do it. _If you want people to invest their money, create an environment in which they feel safe doing so._ When there's no assurance that interest rates and currency exchange rates and other market conditions will remain stable, people will obviously be reluctant to invest. The government response to this, of course, will be to implement low or negative interest rates. The people's response, in turn, will be to invest in gold or cryptocurrency, or overseas in countries that are more stable. In response to which, the government will introduce more legislation... and round and around we go.
One exception that strikes me, though, is that when Packer advocated no restrictions on foreign investment in media, foreign investment meant western investment. Now that we have players on the global scene whose ideologies are inimical to our way of life, it's probably best to reconsider that position.

1992 - there was an adult version of the show “funniest home videos” being shown on his channel 9 one night. I never saw it but it was animals humping, people being caught in the shower etc. Kerry catches it on his TV at home and calls the control room and tells them to get that rubbish off. The show stopped immediately and they put on Hogan’s heroes or something until the end of the time slot.
I’m sure there are many KP stories but I always loved that one.

Kerry was always such a scream at these political meetings. Nothing was funnier than when he was being queried about how little tax he was paying, and he came back at them with 'bloody right! It's in the interests of every Australian to minimize their taxes, given the way you lot spend it!" :) He had a blunt, take-no-prisoners personality, but was generous to a fault with everyday Australians without ever seeking attention for it, unlike so many celebrities who do it for the media attention. One of my favourite tales of Kerry Packer is of the time he was sitting in his office, listening to John Laws (king of daytime talk-back radio for decades) and heard a sob story from some guy phoning in who had lost his car to theft and couldn't get to work to support his family. Packer promptly called his assistant in and said - 'Call Lawsy, get the guy's number, and go buy him a car!' Typical Kerry Packer. He was one of a kind, and every cricketer in the world has him to thank for the fact they now make decent money from the game.

After working in the Fed Australian public sector I can tell you why there are so many laws and regulations. A quarter of them, because we need them, three quarters, to support an inefficient bureaucratic self-feeding machine. Busy work. Bums on seats. Jobs where people don't do much are easier to manage. Institutions that don't change are easier to manage.
