  • Ys: Memories of Celceta review is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. The game was originally released for the PlayStation Vita in Japan in September 2012, and later in North America by Xseed Games in November 2013, and in PAL regions by NIS America in February 2014.A Microsoft Windows version was released in China in 2015, and worldwide in July 2018. A PlayStation 4 version was released in Japan in May 2019, and is due for release in North America and in Europe in June 2020.
Memories of Celceta is identified by Nihon Falcom as the 4th canonical game in the series, after they had outsourced the development of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun and Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys in the 1990s.The game follows the usual series protagonist Adol Christin, who begins the game with amnesia, as he explores the forests of Celceta with his companions.

@@legendredux1291 It's not as easy as whether they want to improve. Making realistic looking graphics cost a tons. There's a reason why SQEX decided to release FFVII: Remake in episodic format (hint: because they can re-use all the assets and engine).
Falcom is just a middle size company. They cannot risk investing billion of dollars on developing cutting-edge game engine. Look at what is happening to CD Projek and its Cyberpunk. Even a company with track records of publishing multiple AAA games are still struggling to polish its most anticipated title even when it had been developed for more than half a decade. If that happened with Falcom, the company should have gone bankrupt.
And I think the graphics from Ys III and IX don't look that bad (especially VIII). For me, I still prefer gameplay over graphics any day. If the graphics is not downright ugly to the point that I feel like vomiting, I'm fine the way they are.

Johnny, unrelated to this video but I've always been curious to see you do a full review or in depth discussion for Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. You released a first impressions video at about 11% completion but as far as I know haven't talked about the game since then. It was my first Wonder Boy* game and I was living vicariously through your passion for the franchise at each moment they harkened back to days of old. It was one of those games that reminded me why a much younger version of myself fell in love with the hobby to begin with. Can't thank you enough for bringing these franchises to the forefront once more, as I've grown very fond of Ys and Wonderboy!

    Great review!
One note about the quest at the tavern: this might be a reference to another Falcom game, Nayuta no Kiseki. The cook in the tavern is terrible but keeps asking for hard to find ingredients.
I think my favorite quest was the one where you had to find gold for some kids. At one point a soldier gets mad at you for finding one on castle grounds. An army general tells him off and apologizes to you. Later in the story you find out that general detests people who push others around because they can. At first it seems like a throwaway moment, but once you learn about him it makes sense.
Also I think having a weapon type pyramid (each type is weak to 1 other) helps to learn the enemies and forces you to use all the characters. I find it odd that in the PS4 release they removed weakness prompts for enemies. If you hit an enemy with a weapon they are weak to the damage number is yellow. If they resist that type the number is purple. It becomes easy to see just from that.
FINALLY: The Sacred Beasts' Lair music slaps on Vita.

What do you think of Ys Origins so far? Personally, I found it to be the low point of the series. Ugly portraits/character designs, poorly designed gameplay, and a lackluster translation that was literally bought from fan translators by the localization team. If you've never played them, I highly recommend downloading a PC Engine emulator and giving Ys I - IV on there a try, they're really damn fun! I love both modern Ys and classic Ys, but I think I'd have to give the edge to classic Ys.

This is actually my favorite Ys from the ones I've played so far. I played it first on the Vita and I think I prefer it that way because the smaller screen and the portability really work well for this game. I think this would have been better on the Switch than on the PS4. But idk, there's just something about this game that really drew me in and I fell in love with. I really love the music and the characters. I think logged about 40 hours back on the Vita, after doing everything from 100% the map, the sidequests, and crafting the ultimate weapons.

@@rambact5769 I agree, it all depends on the art style. I really dislike it when people say "3D > 2D, better textures = better graphics" when that's not true in the slightest. A lot of modern games go for a very bland, lifeless style that has no charm or value to it, meant to be functional and nothing else. I also feel that the switch to HD brought some really ugly lightning engines that make some games look 10x worse than they could look for some reason. I'll always judge a games visuals by how appealing they are, graphical fidelity has no meaning.

It's the first Ys game I played on the Vita and I think it is a very good action RPG. I love the characters and the music is awesome. I do not care about the old graphics, but it seems that the framerate has been improved at least. Anyway it is a great introduction to the modern style of Ys games !

I know you've made lists of your favorite jrpgs, but I'd love to hear your take on a list of jrpgs you feel are "essential" for people who have never got into the genre. Sort of a jrpg taste platter if you will.

Glad many other players will be able to enjoy this awesome game, I played on the Vita, and I don't like to play the same game 2 times (there are other games to be played). Anyway, it's a really nice games, gameplay and music is very compelling and exciting.
Definitely worth your money and time.

I have got into the Ys games and completed all the older 2d ones, and just recently started memories of Celcata, so this is the 1st 3d Ys game I've ever played.
Imo, it's great. It's such a huge step up from the previous games, not trying to say anything bad about the older games in the series.
It brought back some recent memories for me. I have been hardcore into the Trails Series and having completed the Liberl Arc and half of the Crossbell Arc started Trails of Cold Steel 1, and because I had got accustomed to the graphics of those older games, was left in something of a stupor.
I'm quite torn in regards to the graphical differences between the Cold Steel games and everything that come before it.

It honestly looks like a top down version of Ys 8. Even the dash animation is nearly identical. If it ever makes it's way to switch I'll give it a go!

Well, Ys 8 is built on the foundations made by Ys Seven and Celceta. If you like 8, those too are pretty dam close. Not as good as 8 but very fun to play.

Ys on the PC Engine was a graphical powerhouse in its day, and the music was years ahead of what could be heard on the other systems. Ys V also looks pretty damn good for a Super Nintendo game. It wasn't until Ys VI that Falcom started to lag behind on the visuals front, probably because of the switch from gorgeous spritework to lackluster 3D models and hand drawn art.

Does it still look blurry like the PSVita version? I remember playing this back in 2013 and was somewhat turned away because of the blurry resolution. This was after coming from Ys7 for the PSP which (somehow) looks better than Memories of Celceta for the Vita. Just from your footage, I see that the graphics still looks blurry somewhat, hopefully it's just my eyes deceiving me. I would definitely love to pick this game up and finally complete it.
