    [Coury] I had no idea this was so close. Thanks for the impressions - I'll be buying this no matter what on day 1 of the US release. Ys VIII is a hard act to follow since it ended up being my favorite in the series, toppling Oath in Felghana. Looks like it follows the gameplay style of VIII, which I felt was a perfect mixture ofOath/Ark/Origins style and Seven/Celceta in a more grounded third person point of view.
    I miss the blue skies of VIII in the graphics, but I'm guessing this will open up a bit to more varied environments. I am glad to see Dogi looking more like himself again though.
    I'm glad it takes place following Seven story wise. That brings us one step closer to an eventual "Old Man Adol" game that I desperately want. I'm sure I'm not alone. I'd love to see a game with Adol as a more gruff and weathered adventurer. I have to be conscious of what I'm saying with that because its not like he ISN'T world weary at this point, but he still looks like a fresh faced young man. He actually looked a bit older in Seven, which was a great evolution of his older, armored style.

      I definitely want a Red Bearded Adol, too bad that Falcom wanna keep Adol as young as possible to appease the market that likes younger characters over there, but who knows~

      Agreed my good sir, Oath in Felghana was my favourite after Lacrimosa, and the blue skies were indeed a nice atmosphere to the game as well as the beaches. I will definitely get it day one and I’m looking forward to a video review from your channel once Ys 9 gets a western release!

    • @AlexRN
      @AlexRN 5 лет назад +24

      Damn straight. Ys8 wasn’t a high budget game either but a low budget doesn’t mean bad art direction as well and Ys8’s environments looks beautiful while I feel the exact opposite to Ys9. All throughout the video I was thinking “I’ll get a glimpse of a big colorful outdoors environment any second now” and I never got it. I’m certainly worried.

    • @RaifSeverence
      @RaifSeverence 5 лет назад +12

      @@AlexRN part of the reason you don't see any outdoors areas like in 8 are sorta 2 fold. One reason being you and everyone else in town are trapped Inside. (You do get out eventually. I left the town after about 10 hours or So.) and the second reason is also more to do with the location in this game. (An island lost to time where there are no people living on it vs. An actual city with society and all that brings with it)

    • @AlexRN
      @AlexRN 5 лет назад +14

      RaifSeverence I wasn’t even talking about how barren it was, I was just saying the look of the environment is bland and boring and that won’t get fixed with more NPCs. Also the fact that it’s inside a city doesn’t mean it should look like ass! Just look at any town in, say, Dragon Quest XI if you want to see how beautiful and colorful a town can be in a game with an anime look. Ys9 just looks dreadful.

    • @RaifSeverence
      @RaifSeverence 5 лет назад +3

      AlexRN it doesn’t really look like ass though. Although I do get why people would think it’s bland if their not into architecture.
      I do find it curious as to why this game installs less data than 8 does. (7 Gb for 9 vs. 16 for 8)

      Falcom fairly regularly polls for insight as two what they should tackle next for certain subjects, Ys 5 remakes have been on the list of options, but it's losing out to other choices like expanding some other IPs, porting older games to other formats (that's a thing that's outsourced since they are only capable of developing for Sony hardware these days, but still something they have to commit some resources and manpower to), and making new entries in series. Ys 8 and 9 sorta beat out a 5 remake, but it does decently well in the numbers, so it's a back burner project at the most right now. Anything would be better than the PS2 Ys 5 by Taito...that was baaaaad, so was Taito's PS2 remake of Ys 4 for that matter.

    Ys has a special place in my heart. Books 1&2 hooked me into rpgs back when I first played it on TG16 cdrom. I even bought the anime. Falcom however seems to using cookie-cutter production techniques. Those mob battles look just like the mob battles in Dana. Nah, the stories of the Ys games never were that good. They are servicable but often recycle the same plot points (for example, Ys VIII's plot is just a variation of the story of Ys Seven, and even Memories of Celceta isn't that different). And Tokyo Xanadu has a truly terrible storyline, not to speak of the clunky and way overlong dialogues. I love the gameplay, though. And, of course, the godlike soundtracks.

    I actually got into the Ys series with Ys VIII on the Switch, which was pretty fantastic. The story was pretty gripping, the music absolutely elevates the experience, and the gameplay is super great. I actually bought all the Ys games available on Steam yesterday and plan to go through them over the next week, just having finished the original Ys. I've gotta say, had I played Ys when I was a kid around the time it came out, my mind would have absolutely been blown. Hell, even going through Chronicles, I'm still blown away by the quality of the music composition for example.
    On the subject of graphics, I agree that compared to VIII, IX looks a little bland, and I think that problem could've been resolved if they scaled back the scope of areas a bit. That might've helped to make the areas seem less empty, and maybe allow them a greater opportunity to add more details here and there. I think aesthetically, I also just prefer the tropical setting of Ys VIII more, so maybe bias? Regardless, I'm so glad I discovered the series and I'm super excited for Ys IX on Switch!

    I really liked Ys VIII which I think was my first Ys :). But I'm still skeptical about Ys IX even after watching your video and hearing more about your first impressions ^^'...
    Inside the city, it reminds me about THE FIRST Trails of Cold Steel that I did on PS4 some weeks ago...! At least, Ys VIII was happening on an isle and it was more about travelling you know... In Ys IX, you see what you saw in thousands of other games 15 years ago, so... ^^'
    Plus, in your video, we can see the characters popping as you are walking... So technically, they really need to do something :$. I'm not used to pay so much attention about all of that but it will be 2020 when it comes out here...! I hope the relationships between characters and the music will be entertaining enough to make us forgive the technical issues :$

    Since 1989, that must have been pretty hard to import back then. Did you have to go to a speciality importer shop? How’d you do it before the Internet?

      @@HappyConsoleGamer That’s great luck. Around here there was an import shop that didn’t actually carry anything, you placed an order with them and for a fee they’d have it shipped to the shop for you to pick up. They went out of business when online shopping became a thing.

    To anyone that reads this I have a question: As someone who is just getting into this series, should I wait for this game to get a western release, or should I just get Ys VIII? I want to get whatever game has more content or better mechanics.

And when I learned that there will be this title, I might be getting it also. I like the combat system, I like the raid challenge, and harvesting materials.

    As long as you have been doing this I'm surprised you haven't just picked up learning how to read Japanese.
    I have to a degree, but still have a bit of trouble with kanji. Its the reason I have held off importing Sen no Kiseki III cause of how text heavy it is, but I feel Ys shouldn't be so bad.

    I've been thinking the same thing since forever!!! Zelda X Ys. It needs to happen someday. As for which Link (timeline), they could match with Adol's adventures.
    - Ys I & II, Memories of Celceta = A Link to the Past/Link's Awakening
    - Ys: Oath in Felghana; V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand; VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana = Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess
    - Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim; Seven; IX: Monstrum Nox = Skyward Sword/Breath of the Wild

    - it recently came out on switch

    I've played a lot of Ys 8. Liked that a LOT. Not everything (village defense I'm not too hot on), but most of it. Combat, exploration and of course the music. The main question for me is - how drastic are the changes? This will be a buy once an English version comes out, I just want to be prepared.
