The PlayStation (officially abbreviated as PS and commonly known as the PS1 or its codename PSX) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released on 3 December 1994 in Japan, on 9 September 1995 in North America, on 29 September 1995 in Europe, and on 15 November 1995 in Australia, and was the first of the PlayStation lineup of video game consoles. Wow your list is really good. Final Fantasy VIII doesn't get enough love. Tekken 3 is also probably the best fighting game on the ps1
Brave Fencer Musashi doesn't get enough love. One of my favorite games growing up, it's a hidden classic gem by the legendary Squaresoft.
I don't think something can be hidden and classic. Those are pretty mutually exclusive terms.

Ahh the start of disc 3 is amazing. I love how it feels like you "won" but life carries on and you have to deal with the consequences and carry on with life.
Then everything kicks off again.

I have very fond memories of Metal Gear Solid. I remember my dad was stationed in Korea at the time, but before he left he warned my brother and I that we weren't going to have our playstation for awhile. The reason being was because he went to get it modded there because it was cheaper to do it there than it was here in the states back in the late 90s. My dad finished his job in Korea and when he came back he came with a stack of CD-Rs and cases along with them. One of them was Metal Gear Solid. My brother and I were blown away, and then we stayed over at our cousins house to show him the game and even he was like "whoa this is amazing!" Good times~
Man. I remember Christmas 96. My sister and I got a PlayStation we played Tekken 2. I grew up with a Genesis so when I saw what the PlayStation could do I was forever changed.😎😉

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver deserves a mention. One of my favorites.
It's a work of art in it's own right. The angular graphics and textures really fit into the gothic futurism vibe.

Yep, loved Soul Reaver back in '99. However, I went back to replay it a few years ago and the graphics just don't hold up. This game needs a Remaster or Remake.
I love it, to. But the puzzles would knock it off my list. But oh, that story and those performances are top tier indeed.

Silent hill is a true piece of art.
LOVE Tenchu. And, I'm going to go against popular opinion, but Tenchu did stealth better than Metal Gear Solid.

Tekken 3 is still a game I play to this day.

I cant count how many times I played Die Hard Trilogy. One of my favorites back then!
I still put the game into a cd player and listen to the soundtrack. Other great ones you can listen with a cd player are GTA, GTA London and Duke Nukem 3D for example.

Legend of the Dragoon and Star Ocean: second story are must plays
Fear Effect. Syphon Filter. Medal of Honor. Granturismo 2. Great times.
"Star Ocean Second Story" is an absolute PS1 classic.
I'm playing First Departure R. I hope Second story gets the same treatment on modern platforms
Star Ocean is such an underrated series!!!! I personally feel that SO should have gotten just as many games as Final Fantasy. It could have been even greater than FF.

Front mission 3 doesn’t get enough love.
For all my gamer friends around me at the time FFT was all the hype but for me it was FM3. Because Emma's storyline though.
When you trigger ROF UP many times in a row and completely destroy the enemie's wanzer.
When you don't have great graphics to rely upon, you have to tell a good story. And a major part of that is the music. Incredible work by the composers here.
@@ItsMeBarnaby For the time they were the best, agreed. I remember being amazed at one of the Tekkens actually looking 3d. However, how blocky the graphics were was obvious even then. Still not great graphics. Especially in comparison today. And gameplay was also often clunky.

I may have mentioned before that I came into the PSone era very late - 2001. My exposure to the console (and the games surrounding it) was very limited but when I saw the opening cinematic for FF8 (via a bonus disc for FF7) I knew I had to play it. It took me 3 years to rinse the game inside and out and it still stands as my favourite Playstation 1 game to this day.

Syphon Filter was a gem I remember fondly, the stealth and action was spot on. The resident evil games especially 1 and 2 were ahead of their time, but I remember Clock Tower being pretty tasty also.

Some of my favorites back in the day, that you didn't already mention, were The Legend of Dragoon, Spyro 2, Breath of Fire III and IV as well as Star Ocean II, which is probably my most played game on that system.

Vae Victus -- suffering to the conquered. Ironic that now I was the one suffering. Not anything as pedestrian as physical pain. Rather the cruel jab of impotent anger -- the hunger for revenge. I didn't care if I was in Heaven or Hell -- all I wanted was to kill my assassins. Sometimes you get what you wish for. The Necromancer Mortanius offered me a chance for vengeance. And like a fool, I jumped at his offer without considering the cost. Nothing is free, not even revenge.
The original Syphon Filter. You really felt like you were in a James Bond movie, and the taser...ah the taser. And I really loved Tomba!
Some of my personal Playstation one favourites: Tekken 2 & 3, Croc Legend of the Gobbos and Croc 2, Medievil, Resident Evil, Star Wars Rebel Assault 2, Medal of Honour etc. Yep - I know some of the above are guilty pleasures 😄

I was playing through the first Croc again earlier this year. I thought it was quite good and I had a lot of fun. I originally had the Saturn version, but the camera was too zoomed in. The PS1 version is much more playable.
@@ravagingwolverine Glad to hear you enjoyed the replay. I think Croc is a highly underrated game franchise. The platforming is up there with the likes of Crash/Spyro.
Yeah, I didn't mind a bit of Croc. Rented it out once or twice back in the day. Wouldn't put it on my "top 10 platformers of all time" list but it is by no means a bad game.
Final Fantasy VII had a huge impact, not just on the RPG genre but also for the PlayStation as a new game console. I believe it shifted the balance of power at the time from Nintendo to Sony.

1000% agree about Ridge Racer! It was the game that got me into racing games, I had the racing wheel/pedals and played for days! The music is still timeless!
Great era. Wish Sony hadn't muffed the PS Classic so badly.
People should never have whined about what games were on it because they should have realized that the modding community would have all the PS1 games on it with extras. I guess I cannot complain because I picked up my classic from Best Buy Canada for $10 brand new instead of the launch price in Canada of $130.
The best era, we came from the 16bit/8 bit era of greatness and before the last era prior to online gaming taking off, long live the couch co-OP wars
It's an open source emulator, its meant for you to add roms.
Wish they would release a PSOne Mini with a different line up of games, and actually good emulation. Though I agree with the previous poster that the lineup doesn't matter much, as the best thing to do with these mini consoles is to hack them to add all the games you want.
Once flashed this is the best mini console out there!
FF Tactics has some of the best plot, characters, setting, and storyline in all of gaming but I think that's overshadowed by the fact that it's a tactical strategy game which is outside the norm for a Final Fantasy. It's a shame we were never given more games in the world of Ivalice with direct links to the War of the Lions / Ramza and Delita era.
I would add to the list Silent Hill, Wipeout and Breath of Fire IV.
Breath of Fire 4 is genuinely my favourite JRPG of all time. If the franchise wasn't dead I'd be jonesing for a remaster... as in, exactly the same game but with the 3D elements brushed up to meet the artists' original vision. Headcanon for me was that the demons and dragons were rendered that way to show they were truly from a different dimension.

I picked up a used, mint condition PS1 model 9001 the other week, and I must say, the system is generating so much nostalgia...it has its own gravitational force that keeps pulling me back.

The PS1 era is something so special and legendary, just classic after classic, it made me a die hard fan of RPG's and fighters. I'm still playing the PS1 trilogy of Final Fantasy to this day.

Soulblade was really tight fighter that needs more love. It was a groundbreaking game. Wipeout 2097 was pure adrenaline with its top playability, gfx and awesome music.
Seeing Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, and Final Fantasy Tactics on this list made me so happy. Your top 10 is nearly identical to mine. I really loved Saga Frontier and my favorite survival horror of all time is Clock Tower.

Johnny the editing in this episode was amazing, I liked the little ps1 transition you did. The footage from the framemeister looks amazing and i'm happy to know your able to play the original consoles and capture footage from them upscaled, i've been waiting for you to talk about some ps1 games for a long while now and i'm happy to have seen this, it made my morning. Will you ever be able to do a that copy games episode btw ? I would love to know how that was like back then.
I was 7 years old when i first watched my brothers play the Final Fantasy 7 demo in 1996/97 and when i got my little hands on it it changed my view of video games from a short moment of entertainment into video games changing my view of games into a more serious medium on the same level as movies and music and life in general. Never will i forget what that game did for me and my life and will remain my all time favorite game of all time. And the music is the best in any game in my opinion.

I grew up with PS1 and N64 and love both, but the PS1 has aged so much better and I find the graphical style so charming these days.
There are also still amazing games being made in this graphical style such as Anodyne 2 and Banned Memories.

Johnny you have the EXACT same taste with me when it comes to PS1 games but one game I'll fight for to the death in order to get some recognition and fame is my FAVORITE PS1 game, that is the claymation classic "Skullmonkeys", the sequel to the PC Puzzzle adventure game "The Neverhood", both made by the same team that made the Earthworm Jim series during the 16-bit era. I feel it's a criminally forgotten series, it's so strange and imaginative, and the soundtracks for those two games (The Neverhood & Skullmonkeys) are some of the coolest bizarre tunes you'd hear on the PlayStation considering the PlayStation track record on amazing soundtracks. If your reading this Johnny check them out sometime, its something different even if it's not your cup of tea, I just don't think they should be forgotten.

when i was young i was obsessed with graphics and "next level" type of stuff. i wouldn't have even looked at some of these games and i think that's a bit of a shame. thank you for that video! i will at least give some of these titles a try!

Xenogears, MGS, FF Tactics, Suikoden 2, Castlevania SotN, Dino Crisis, Star Ocean 2, are just some of my favorites on PS1.
I loved Square Soft games so much, and there are some good hidden gems for the PS1. A couple that stand out are Brave Fencer Musashi, and Einhander. One is an action RPG, and the other is a side-scrolling shooter.
Final Fantasy VII waz my verry first FF game I have ever played back then (in 2018) and I got addicted real fast.
I played it again in 2020 around the exact same time its remake was released,it was perfection. 💯

@@mastertarpolin had the same problem but then i got my hands on a PS1 with a region block overwriting chip. these are available on ebay as is the game. PS3 on a US acc setting also has it in the store. then there is also the PSX rom, but sadly there seems to exist no real functioning ones.

Xenogears is still one of my fav games of all time. Square was truly on top of their game with the playstation. Xenogears was a masterpiece.
I really hope they remaster Parasite Eve. I'd love to play it on PS5!

Thank you so much for the PE2 praise. The story's not much to write home about, but the gameplay genre crossover is second to none. The atmosphere is also awesome, as well the fluff text with your hunter investigations.
Port FFT War of the Lions to modern consoles Square!
Preferably without the terrible lag that was only in that version. Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game of all time, but they butchered it on the PSP.
Tactics117 they did fix it in the iOS version if I remember correctly so port that version to modern consoles

Alpha 2 was my favorite SNES fighter
So many great games on the PS1. When you mentioned how great the music was in all these games, that just reminded me of a really cool feature that a lot of PS1 game discs used to have. You could just pop the disc into a CD player and listen to the music as if it were a soundtrack disc. I remember first doing this with Tomb Raider and being blown away.
I used to do that with Star Gladiator and Rage Racer a lot. Even Symphony of the Night had a track you could listen to if you put it in a CD player.
