Hey Ola, thanks for the review I asked in one of your FAQ's. I requested one for the ESP E-II FR7 BTB. didn't expect that you would ask colleagues to do this review for me.. :"D Ola, you are the best!
For young and aspiring metal musicians like me, this series is invaluable! I have learned so much from these. It's so awesome to see pages out of other established musicians lives. It has kind of helped me realise how much effort I have to put into my future. Please keep these coming (^_^)
Crazy story Doc and Dallas’s uncle was my high school art teacher. Really nice guy and let me listen to metal during class while drawing etc. I was wearing a Randy Rhoads/ Ozzy t-shirt one day and asked if I liked metal. I said yes for sure. He asked if I had ever heard of God Forbid, I had , and he told me they were his nephews. Small world : )
Doc , your guitar tones, riffs, and harmonies with your Bro on those records are outrageous. Lost track of you til Ola and am blown away by your new Band/Brand success. killer bro
yo Doc nothing wrong with talking if you have stuff to say that helps people understand where youre coming from what youre doing and where youre heading! Keep it up brother!
Fantastic interview. Loved seeing you in God Forbid several times in the UK back in the day, and thought your comments on the industry and also metalcore scene were really spot on; same with Job For a Cowboy (latest album definitely the best). Will have to check out the podcast now!
Some of this hit me really hard. I had the same experience of being in a band for most of my life that defined me. We broke up, and I didn't have any of my own brand or identity as a guitarist, only as a member of that band. I didn't bounce back with Doc's drive. I stopped playing for a few years. Now I'm 37 and starting over, and it's intimidating. His message to say yes and just start getting back into it is something I needed to hear right now. Edit: Fuck, forgot I turned 38 today...
Man, Doc is one real dude. Almost everything he said about the struggles of being a musician proper resonated with me - even for someone like me who only really has local scene standing. Great interview!
@@warriorthawitt9971 it's not for everyone. Usually if I am not into a song or band I give it a few years before I try it again. Sometimes I feel I am not "ready" for the music. Just like Mastodons Blood Mountain album. I didn't like the album one bit. It took me over a decade to listen to it again. I was blown away as if I was listening to something completely different.
Ola Englund, thank you for interviewing Doc. When I was really attacking the idea of being apart of band was right right around God Forbid's Gone Forever and Constitution of Treason, which are ridiculously overlooked albums, especially Treason. I was lucky enough to meet and hang out with the guys of God Forbid twice when they played The Boardwalk in Sacramento, California, and Doc was an amazing gracious man, entertaining my stupid guitar geek questions, "how's the Randall working for you? Do you prefer the ESP V or Eclipse? etc." I even drove their singer Byron to Jack in the Box to get the band food and paid for it, mainly because there were not enough people at their show for as good as they were, I blame the label not backing them enough in the advertising side of things. Ok now I'm rambling, long story long, thank you for the awesome interview.
Got to meet doc on god forbid final tour ... one of the nicest people i have ever met and had the pleasure of talking too and jamming with him and matt was the highlight of the night .
This was a great episode. I appreciate that Ola knows how to not speak over his guest. Also that each episode is it's own. With Jensen there was a more obvious rapport and back and forth, vs here where Doc really drove the interview.
Oh, Ola… If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am now… Big fan of Doc and the Bad Wolves. Great seeing you two talk music and gear.
🥯☕🥐🥰🤩wish I was there to help Ola with the coffee. I love the wildlife outdoors and the way you come across so positive. So beautiful the riffs u play.
Doc is such a great guy to listen to. Inspirational even for an old guy like me who has played music his whole life. It’s all about drive and work ethic. Top work Ola 👍
Awesome episode! Really enjoyed hearing what Doc has been up to since God Forbid days. Met Doc post show at a gig in Birmingham UK back in 2006(?). God Forbid should have been huge and are still missed...
I still remember vividly "No Masters" coming on my RUclips music app while working out and was like, "holy shit, who is this"? I was an instant fan of Doc's playing!
Extremely thought-provoking, insightful, and inspirational musician. Most of these are light entertainment, but this one was genuinely somewhat eyeopening to watch. Thanks Doc!
I used to take guitar lessons from Doc. And I've had the fortune of meeting a bunch of LA guitarists(like Nita Strauss) and musicians through him and my own former band. We had this joke about Doc. We'd always say "Doc Coyle: forever committed to being in some band." He didn't mention it here but he also used to do a jam session at the Whiskey where local known musicians got together and performed cover songs.
Ola, this is your best interview so far .. Love Doc ... and I learned so much that I did not know about him .. well done ... keep doing what you do ... I am huge fan.
I’m not really into anything this guy’s ever done, but he seems like a good, genuine dude. But yeah, as someone else said in the comments, it’d be cool to hear the dude actually play a few notes (especially if he went through the trouble of bringing the guitar in.)
HELLO FROM NEW ENGLAND IN THE STATES, OLA...THIS GUY IS THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH, PRACTICAL, AND INTELLIGENCE METAL GUY I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED...SLASH WAS (IS) STILL MY FAVORITE ROCKER FROM THAT ERA....I WENT THROUGH 3 COPIES OF THE RECORD (YES, I'M DATING MYSELF....), I WAS 15 WHEN THE FIRST RECORD DROPPED AND I ACTUALLY SAW GNR AT THE RITZ IN NYC IN 1988 (FAKE I.D.)...MTV WAS FILMING, MAN WHAT A SHOW...SEEING THEM BEFORE THEY REALLY BLEW UP WAS MAGICAL...I'M GOING TO CHECK OUT DOC'S MUSIC...I CAN RELATE TO HIM IN A BIG WAY...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, OLA...PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST....
I agree with Doc, that widening your listening habits expands your musical pallette. Especially when it comes to songwriting. Interesting to hear this guys insight about his music career.
Wow Ola what a amazing show you had with Doc. The reality of how the evolution of the industry and self promotion of both artists. The two of you in your own ways ( similar ) to one another how you have to be self motivating and promotive in this day and age. Wow Ola look forward to more interviews with Coffee with Ola. Thank You I learned so much as in the same steps Myself have been doing in life in general and the different paths were choose to take to take us were we are today. Defiantly an eye opening show.
I miss God forbid one of my favorite bands and just killer guitar riffs and syncopation between both guitars and the drums just gets me hard everytime.
I was thinking about guitar companies, and to see such a young guitar company in a saturated market doing so well makes me stoked. Not because there are more cool guitars on the market, but because the competitive advantage of Solar, in my opinion, comes down to one thing: community. When you buy a Solar, you're part of this badass community. Other brands can make that claim too, but surely they blush when they do.
Additionally, I give zero percent fucks what this is called. I love the content, great interviews and I enjoy hearing "insight" from guitarists. Thanks Ola.
Great interview, Ola. I see you’re asking more open-ended, in depth questions and allowing the interviewee really open up. Love this series, it’s very motivating for me to keep learning to play!
I very much enjoyed this episode. I didn't know much about Doc before this and his story is very inspiring. I am now a fan of Doc and will check out Bad Wolves now. Cheers!
Really nice video and series. One hour + went really fast. I have one suggestion for a quest - Andy LaRocque. As a musician (and an accountant) + a family man myself, I don't have that much free time to "do" nothing else, but I always look up for your new videos. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this VERY interesting interview. I saw Doc Coyle a lot, back in the days of God Forbid, in my ESP catalogues. And, I have been around with the 'Metalcore-scene' that days. I never thought he would be such a reflective and open minded guy. It is great to see that. He seems to be a cool person hanging out with. And also the Jensen interview was great. Keep on doing and naming it 'coffee with Ola'.
Nutley, NJ in the house!!!, seriously think its so awesome that he mentioned 89.5FM WSOU! it the station that introduced to Pantera and so many others!!!
Got to tell you. This guy seems like a real down to Earth cool dude. Not surprising. Living in New Jersey all my life. A lot of guys from the area he's from are good fucking people. Definitely gained a new fan.
I remember what he was talking about. I remember hearing Cacophony and Voivod. Ministry, Skinny Puppy, The Sugar Cubes, The Cult, Motorhead, Ice -T, Rollins Band, Fugazi.
Love this episode. Have been a fan of Doc's work for a long time. I always felt it was unfortunate God Forbid broke up because I latched on late. Fuck, there is some killer shit there though. Glad to hear you're doing well and enjoying you journey. \m/ \m/
Had a great time with Doc, discussing the music industry today.
I’m so happy you have started doing this Ola Englund! I grew up on God Forbid lol! Also, I’m from New Jersey too!

I think Doc is a seriously underrated songwriter. Constitution of Treason is a great album and I still listen to it today.
God Forbid is the most underrated metalcore band ever..
