I am not a licensed contractor, but I never did any work that I didn't check all of the necessary codes. I always went over the job with the person I did the work for to make sure they were satisfied. I am 74 years old and have been doing construction work sense I was 27. In my retirement I have worked at Home Depot and Lowe's. When anyone who came in doing home repairs, I would always tell them what codes were involved with the work they were doing. I always told them to check with the local building department to make sure they are doing the work correctly. If you do any work on your own house and have a fire or water leak it may not be covered by your insurance policy.

This is why I only do work in my own house, then I have no one to blame but myself. Lol
I kind of learned the hard way to not trust contractors anymore. But It motivated me to do everything myself! It's cheaper and very rewarding. My dad helps me and teaches me a lot!

None of it is difficult. I’m in the building trades but I’m a commercial multi family designer. Thankfully, the first company I worked for had a management training program that required us to work each and every job in our shop/factory for a minimum of a month and up to six months depending on the complexity of the station. Not only did it make me a better designer but it also instilled in me a respect for the skills of those who’s work follows my own. The most useful side benefit is that I can frame my own additions on my own home and those of my friends and family to code with ease. I also know which options are the most cost effective ways to add value to the work (BTW Energy Heels cost almost nothing and pay themselves back in few mere months on greatly reduced heating/cooling costs 😉)

I have been a remodeling contractor for 3 decades...Many times the cause of these sorts of situations is because the people often will hire the cheapest contractor...Often, in a multi bid cattle call project, where the client calls a bunch of us out to look at something, the scope of work changes with each contractor, so by the end, the first guy whose bid is thousands cheaper than the last guy gets the job and the homeowners believe the same scope will be done for the original price...It's all a matter of communicating...But, that's not to say there aren't tons of ripoff assholes doing this work...But Caveat emptor! Let the buyer beware.
If your contractor doesn't have a project under permit or a recently completed one, they are most likely fly by nighters...Ask them where they are working right now...Ask to talk to their most recent project client( if they start ham'n and Hal'n, don't ignore the alarm bells....Ask them to take you to a job they did 5 or 10 years ago...See what condition it's in...A great contractor has references that date back years...

Great job guys! Come to my town and expose the 'phony' contractors! (I am a 35 yr contractor.. This kind of crap make it tougher on the one's that are competent.. Thanks for exposing this fake!

I get calls from home centers all the time claiming their contractors can do any fix to my home. I prefer to deal with real contractors and not amateurs.
I’ll stop short of saying that changing your number in the modern era is a life changing experience - especially when your business is 100% tied to it. HOWEVER, it IS inarguably a huge PITA due to having to inform everyone you know of your new number. Bottom line: He KNOWS he changed his number. There is zero chance it slipped his mind even when put on the spot.
Many license contractors almost never use a hammer on the job, they hire someone else and most of them only know the technical not the practical part of the job

Bad builders should be shot. In fact, you should have a legal right to beat the crap out of builders that don't do the work to your satisfaction.
i totally agree, i do contract work, and i always make every installation absolutely perfect, and i get such pride out of that, but pieces of shit like this that screw people and give contractors a bad rap just need to be tortured and killed

The pick one of the three options sounds good but soft. I would've forced him to pick two out of three options e.g., help finish the job and either give the money back or face the family in court.

Good and bad builders exist like all business. Hire licensed and INSURED contractors and do your homework before a hire.
Nobody is going to buy the season.
I am having a house build by stylecraft builders contractors and I have found so many issues with the new house that I am not going to accept the house. the contractors build the house as if they did not care. at every place where there is a angle there is a gap. and to top it all they put a plug in the closet high on top of the wall close to the ceiling. what am I going to plug in there I cant even reach it. the kitchen counter have a big gap between the counter and the cabinet and lots more things I cant even mention. I am disappointed with the contractors they use
Plug in the closet close to the ceiling is probably for an alarm system they"ll usually mount the panel for all the wires there and it needs power.
