Has anyone ever asked you to build a 20 acre pond? I love watching the pond builds, could not even imagine how long it would take and how much dirt it would require.
It’s because I have between 15 and 30 feet of sand on my property that I have a pond at all. About 35 years ago the state needed some sand for a new road project. The former owner worked for the state DOT so he worked out a deal to sell them sand. So they came over and dug out the sand till they hit the clay layer. So he then had almost an acre pond that varied from 10 to as much as 30 feet deep when it’s flood level full. And got paid for it. I bought the property 12 years ago, cleaned the junk out of the pond and got the trees off the small dam and the rest of the shore line. Then added 5 pounds of minnows, a few blue gills and a dozen catfish. 12 years later I have plenty of catfish to eat and lots of bluegills for the kids to catch. I feed them a bit in the winter but otherwise the pond takes little maintenance. Long story short, sand can be a good thing.
@@nathanscott7910 Absolutely. Good catch. Mine is a sharp, clean sand, not smooth, soft beach sand. Sharp sand is what you use for mortar and concrete. That’s why the DOT wanted it. My property is in an area of low rolling hills. They took the sand from a low area at the bottom of the hill. Made a great place for a pond. The house is up on the top of the hill, maybe 55 or 60 feet higher in elevation. There is about a foot is sandy loam topsoil and then 20 to 50 feet of sand, then gravel, then some soft sandstone, some gravel, some more sandstone then a few feet of very soft lignite coal. It’s not thick enough, or of high enough quality, to bother mining. Then you get another layer of sandstone, then a layer of small gravel about 30 feet thick, which is where I get my water. Only about 190 feet down thank God. And then comes up to almost 70 feet so I have plenty of water in the column. But yeah, the variety of sand really matters.
The sun angle and the view you got on camera, really reveals the topography that John's talking about - 'just grade it off.' I think I can see the clay deposit off the edge of that waterway.
You made good use of the time and situation caused by the down truck. Another pond in the making, look forward to seeing it go in. Thanks for the ride along sir.

I noticed that the horse was watching but otherwise was unconcerned when the dozer was pushing dirt right at it, and then the tree comes down and the horse is unimpressed. It definitely got used to all the equipment and work by now. Horses are amazing.

Not only was that horse not bothered by the trees falling, it didn't care that the dozer was going toward it. Those are great horses to have. Love watching you move dirt.

Soil does change often rapidly and seemingly without reason on occasion. As one who used work as as forester in the woods nearly every day in the Deep South I saw it regularly and frequently
@@johnleake708 I have a degree in Turf Management. Soil deeper in the ground or a couple feet depending on locations don't change that much. This is proven be we can still see natural disasters that have happened thousands and millions of years ago. While soil level will raise over time very little happens under the ground to a certain depth of course. My comment was only pointing out that it would be awesome to see how things ended up the way they did, like a fast forward or rewind remote but for time itself. The white mucky clay is very interesting though that's why I said that.
Odd how the soil turned from dark to a pure white fine sand. I can say you never are at a loss for work. You just more around until the tire is fixed and knock down some massive trees. As always good job Chris.
Chris I noticed in the bottom of the pond as you were digging your first Trench there seems to be a lot of Rock in that area I am assuming you're going to have to put some clay into that too, also it's a great thing that you had Uncle John with you that's why you were able to get as much done as you did great job fellas continue the great work enjoying each and every video and learning a lot

It's nice to have John double as an excavator operator! Couldn't help but notice there's an awful lot of sandy veins in that soil. I hope there's enough clay on site to line and seal the pond. If not, a couple of truckloads of sodium bentonite might be needed. Just saying...
What depth of a clay do you need to stop water from going through it so can you form up your base with soil and then just put a clay pan on top thank you
Strange how as we say in my neck of the woods 'You wait two days for a Bus and then two turn up at the same time'. This evening as I watched DP on his site he had the tyre man out to fix a flat on his dump truck. Two hours for the man to arrive and thirty two minutes to replace the tyre and he was back lugging dirt. Come onto your site and guess what another dump truck with a flat tyre. I feel yours was a straight forward back on the rim and seal the rim and add air, if so good as I think it cost DP about $3,500, costly things to have to change.
Well now, this was a pleasent late afternoon surprise to have pop up in the middle of watching an episode of Pysch on Amazon Prime. Of course I had to pause that and switch over to Chris. Ended number 23 on the like list. You guys are lighting fast on the trigger fingers. But that's because it's an Uncle John and Chris pond build episode. Like blood in the water to sharks with Chris's subs. We swarm immediately when we get a notification he has unloaded one.
The camera doesn’t do this job justice it is very deceiving on which way the pond wall was going.great job I have learnt a great deal from watching you work it has made me a better operator on my little machine thank you
Seen some folks that would just sit down or go home when things go off the rails . Those are the folks you do not hear about because they are not around long enough to make a good impression . Chris may not get done what he had planned , but , he got plenty done anyway . That is a winner .
Where you see a sand layer like that it's because at one time in the past a creek or small river ran thru that area and washed it in leaving behind that layer when the course of the creek shifted or it just dried up because the source of the water did. Geography was one of my favorite subjects.

I’m pretty sure he would rather you tear up the pretty green pasture than pay for clay to be hauled in!! Haha. Every project is definitely deceiving until you finally get into them. That was some luck!! As a kid (16 - 23 years old I used to do a lot of work on those tires,all the way up to mining trucks! The equipment they have access to today is so much nicer than we had back then. They aren’t too bad to work on, but there’s mo real room for mistakes!! They can be lethal in an explosion, or limb destroying if they shift, drop on your fingers or hands and of course if they are off the haul truck, tires that size can be fatal if they fall on you. I always though they were pretty cool to work on though. I’m 59 now and a bit broken from the years. No way I could work on them now,,,, even though I’m 5’8” tall, 195 lbs and pretty lean!! I’m strong, but my back is fragile.
What kind of dealership swaps out the flywheel and then doesn’t notice a flat tire?! All dealerships are good for is draining your bank account! Thanks for sharing Chris!

Looks like the white sand that was over at the other horse farm he did. That had ground water coming in as he dug down though as it was much deeper. Have to wait and see where this goes. 🤠

Let me tell u that it takes a hell of a good guy to do what u r Chris. Most people would have quit uncle John when u first bought the first piece of equipment. U have learned a lot working for that company and I would say more than how to operate equipment and clean out ponds. I’d say they showed u how to b a man

The white sand and what looks like a seep or spring seems to be right where your core trench will be. If so how do you deal with that, out here in California diverting it with a pipe and Bentonite cap would be a possibility but not a shure cure.I'm very Impressed with all your work it shows what pride and hard work looks like ,you don't see that very often anymore good fortunes to you and yours

Funny that DP just had a tyre changed on Bubba Dump ,as his tyre needed repairs! I'd be looking for a second hand rim and tyre as a spare ,still be quicker to go and get it ,fit it and keep working earning it's keep ! Yes there is a cost involved,but losing valuable time that a machine is not working is just as costly 😊😊😊😊,if it rains and causes delays and puts the job back a day or two is also adding fuel to having a spare wheel and tyre . A mechanical breakdown is different 🤗

Regarding the 250 power & speed: I recall when you tested the latest model of the 250 (at the factory or a demo day) that you said it was as or almost as fast as your 220. Any serious thoughts about getting a new 250?

This owner has done a great job managing his wood plot. Kept the trees thinned enough that they all grow into nice worthwhile big boys.

Some are good at just draining your wallet. Others are great partners to work with, the hard part is finding the good ones willing to work with you

The white sand and what looks like a seep or spring seems to be right where your core trench will be. If so how do you deal with that, out here in California diverting it with a pipe and Bentonite cap would be a possibility but not a shure cure.I'm very Impressed with all your work it shows what pride and hard work looks like ,you don't see that very often anymore good fortunes to you and yours

I swear you guys get more than your share of rain. Most of the country burning up in drought and rains there seems like daily.
We had it the spring. North east Missouri. Late getting crops M and now we are in basically drought. Up until now we had timely rains.
Except for when he wanted to burn the tree scraps at Bealy Good's pond.
Funny that DP just had a tyre changed on Bubba Dump ,as his tyre needed repairs!
I'd be looking for a second hand rim and tyre as a spare ,still be quicker to go and get it ,fit it and keep working earning it's keep !
Yes there is a cost involved,but losing valuable time that a machine is not working is just as costly 😊😊😊😊,if it rains and causes delays and puts the job back a day or two is also adding fuel to having a spare wheel and tyre .
