Red Clay = high iron oxide (rust) content The white is Kaolin clay. The difference is in how the soil got there. The white means it didn't travel and absorb minerals from the soils and water as it moved, the red on the other hand was deposited by water that contained a lot of iron. As a bonus the white kaolin is actually edible! It was the original binder in kaopectate before they changed it. It's also use in a lot of pills and cosmetics as well as a common paint additive.
Was just gonna post that I thought it was Kaolin clay, lol. THen seen your comment. It's also the clay used in fine ceramics to make the ceramics pure white.
The white clay is likely Bentonite, It's used in the oil industry to line mud and brine pits when the soil doesn't have enough clay. Farm tanks (ponds) are also lined with it. Its also used for kitty litter.
The red colour in clay is caused by the iron content. Mica forms incredibly thin, flat sheets & when eroded, it helps make clay containing it somewhat faster drying & less elastic.
Yeah was gonna add that FE+ oxidation sometime in its formation similar to the processes of the Red Rock Conservation Area (So Nevada). I wonder how many samples were taken and at what depth because there was soil transported from 'across the street.' Just curious...interesting content for sure!!
Early NC potters would have loved that white clay. We have a great potting and brick making industry in NC because of the soil. And our clay comes in red, white, and blue! (The blue is more common further west of where Chris is.)
Here in Southeast Alabama we have sand that is red like the clay. Spread this red sand on your lawn as a top dressing and watch your grass turn a very deep green. I have always been told that to iron in the red sand is what caused the grass to turn green.
When you were scratching that stuff up in yesterday`s video it looked a lot like the 'hard bottom' of your neighbor`s lost pond in the woods you reclaimed last year. That black horse appears to have gotten used to the machines and the noise. Chalk up another fine pond build by Guins Excavating.
According to the all knowing internet pure clay is white due to the base material being silicates. ( white clay is the rule and not the exception) Colored clay is due to the other minerals contaminating the silicate. Who knew.
That light colored material looks like what we hit at 8’ deep when digging our pond. It was so hard the tractor would not leave tracks even with water on it. It was light blue/gray in color and they called it hard pan
Glad to hear about the non-red clay. While you were digging into it, reminded me of still being clay but just not red. Supports my thought it was also clay (which can be the coat of many colors) and helps your project. Good to have the analysis to know.
Here in Vermont we call it white pigment. There's actually a plant in New Haven Vermont called White pigment, which a mile up the road from my house a place called kaolin pond was where they used to mine that white clay stuff. I don't know what they extracted from it at the white pigment plant in New Haven but it was a banging business I remember as a kid it was real busy trains would always be there loading up so I'm not sure but it's kind of cool looks like the same stuff
Just doesn't get any better for us Chris Letsdig18 subs. Two pond build series going at the same time. One a mega series the other a nice little residential private pond on a horse farm.
Another great video , now seeing the dozer in the pond next to the overflow , puts the pond into perspective , I did not realise how "big" the "small" pond is . As usual another fantastic project by Chris and John.
Enjoy hearing and discerning bout types of soil. So interesting. Pond shaping up so well. All manicured as usual. Uncle John and u are good team, luv how u work so well together! God's blessings and take care of of you 🙏
We learned a Lot - that white Clay is as good as the Red Clay ! Little Pond come along in Leaps and Bounce - just Great ! Hey - the Horse is checking You out again and he approved ! GREAT PROGRESS indeed and looking Fantastic already ! Also a Great Video and many Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
Interesting. I would’ve bet my left arm that white stuff was a silica based dirt. Hard to tell from a video watched on a phone, but the way it fell apart looked very sandy
The name of the clay is Kaolin, or “China clay,” and It has also been widely used in the making of paper, rubber, paint, and heat-resistant products. And one main use is making porcelain China, and when this clay is fired at a high temperature, it becomes translucent.
The pond is coming out great and its going to add value to all of the property by it. This would be a great opportunity to use the skidstear and your new power rake to dress out the this project.
It's gonna look great with the "White Clay" to line the Pond bottom ... it should give a really different and cool look to the color of the Pond: "The Caribbean is such a light a shade of blue due to the tendency of the Caribbean coast to scatter sunlight. The fact that the sand is light colored and the water is relatively shallow also makes the water appear turquoise."
in ga running along the Fall Line which runs roughly from columbus to macon to augusta. Kaolin clay is present. Basically it is the line of an old prehistoric coast line where this is present. Your white clay could be some type of clay similiar to this.
You could always do a small test and make a bowl shape of the white soil compacted about two feet or so than pour in a couple gallons of water and see what happens
Mica is a sheet like clay mineral, it’s the platy shape and electrical charge of clay minerals that gives clay is properties. The red colouration in the clay is due to the iron content
Cool information on the white clay. Did a little reading after that, "pure white clay because of its high kaolin content". Red clay is more organic and has a higher plasticity. Thank you and have a great day.
Not sure the white clay is the same stuff (kaolin clay) but from what Little I know about it Josiah Wedgwood had 5 tons shipped from NC to England to be used at his famous pottery factory.
If I remember my soilscience lecturer (as part of winemaking studies). testing clay you want to make a ribbon in your hand with some water.. if it falls apart (friable) it’s more sandy. If it’s red it has iron. If it clumps together into a ribbon, it’s clay (there are dozens of different types of clay depending in its ionic bonding). If it sparkles, it has mica. It was a good 20 years since that subject… but I do recall making hundreds of ribbons and filling out evaluation forms.
Kaolinite clay. Usually found in sheets of rock type material. One of the major uses today is in making sheetrock. But has been used for centuries in making fine china and porcelain.
That's a first for me. I've never seen clay that white. My guess would be other than no mica that one of the micronutrients/macronutrients is either extremely high or low causing the color difference. It's just weird why that one area is like that than across the street back to regular color. Strange and interesting
Look up China clay (in Cornwall) it was mined here to make porcelain once we had stolen the process from the Chinese. Before then (1750) til 1580 all our pottery was red.
To get a sense of how steep a slope Chris is working on I tilt my phone till the trees line up with something verticle. Those pond banks are pretty steep when he's on the dozer near the riser
Finally taking shape. The white clay looks like fine beach sand. Did I understand you say they may line this lake? Do you think it might leak? Dam and overflow look good. See you tomorrow. Good job Chris.
Good to know for future jobs, about the light colored clay. I love watching you get on that finish dozer Chris !! Man, you got the shit on point now, I mean make it look good !! That's going to be a nice little pond there, got it coming right on along !! You and Unk always get umm knocked on out...lolol... Great as always Chris !! Have a Great Evening Man... And, On too the Next !!
The white clay you have is called China Clay, mined here in the UK, Cornwall, used to make fine pottery but mainly used here for the manufacture of plasterboard for the building industry, exported worldwide, the company here is English China Clay Co. or ECC for short.
Thanks for the video Chris, I was wondering if you or John had discussed with the homeowner the benefits of stump removal from his lawns while all that heavy equipment is on site? I definatly would want them removed!
They didn't happen to mention the name Kaolin or Kaolinite? That clay is used in producing china plates and dishes, even in cordierite for spark plug insulators.
Looking great, never ceases to amaze me how you get the rough in and finish grades to come out so “ slick”, as you say. Thanks for the ride along sir.

@@george8873 Yeah, I know some folks who would kill for a source like that up here.
I was thinking bentonite clay
This really is a fun little pond. Glad the neighbor is so accommodating about the dam. This looks so good, and the horse is not caring once again!🤣
The white clay is likely Bentonite, It's used in the oil industry to line mud and brine pits when the soil doesn't have enough clay. Farm tanks (ponds) are also lined with it. Its also used for kitty litter.
Chris and John learned a new thing about the soil they have in the state of North Carolina. Learning and improving is the best thing in my book.😎
That has to be the most chill horse I've ever seen.
That little pond is looking good . Those folks are going to appreciate the great job y’all have done
The red colour in clay is caused by the iron content.

true! 👍 Here in France we have Limoges clay, makes lovely porcelain ... quite expensive too!! 🤔
Early NC potters would have loved that white clay. We have a great potting and brick making industry in NC because of the soil. And our clay comes in red, white, and blue! (The blue is more common further west of where Chris is.)

Defo iron, my parents live in Iron Acton, no surprise their local sandstone is deep red. But the name comes from mining the iron
Neat little pond. Interesting about the while clay. Love watching these take shape.
I never get tired of watching you operate that bucket like it was your hand ... so gentle and precise. Good on you. God bless.
We are getting a large expansion at work 40 million, and one of the contractors skid loader has a big ole LD18 decal on it!!
To make clay grow grass add lime to the soil. Mix in the lime in large quantities and plant. Sprinkling a little on top isn't enough.
According to the all knowing internet pure clay is white due to the base material being silicates. ( white clay is the rule and not the exception) Colored clay is due to the other minerals contaminating the silicate. Who knew.
That one ingredient must be the one that doesnt stick in your bucket!😉

Wow!! That white dirt looks like a fine ash!! Never would have thought it would be like clay!! Enjoyed the video!
Great video 😎👍. Sure is odd the way the soil changes so much in that area. Neat stuff

It’s not a big pond but it’s a nice looking pond. I like the way it’s shaped.
Another great video , now seeing the dozer in the pond next to the overflow , puts the pond into perspective , I did not realise how "big" the "small" pond is . As usual another fantastic project by Chris and John.
The white clay looked like same material you came across in your Forgotten Pond in the Woods project.
Looks similar to what we have in north TX. Digging a hole by hand or even with a gas powered auger is like trying to dig through concrete.
I would still put a layer of the red dirt on the bottom cause the white dirt would allow more light in the pond which means more algae growth.
The little pond is looking absolutely awesome. Greta job Chris
What a lovely setting for a beautiful pond and you are doing a great job as usual.

ITS AMAZING THE FINESS you have on the mini. great little pond.

Lovely job, nice 'scaping.
Really looking good Chris. Take care & cheers 🐨🦘🥰
Interesting. I would’ve bet my left arm that white stuff was a silica based dirt. Hard to tell from a video watched on a phone, but the way it fell apart looked very sandy
Yeah. Looked like pumice or pearlite.
It looked like an ash it was so wispy
In Alabama it's called Selma Chaulk and it will perk...not good.
Carolina white face ?!

the little horse pond just got alot bigger. hope the soil guys rite and it seals good. nice job fellas. cheers.
Man, You are So Good... It just makes me smile to know that such quality work is getting done.
🤗
The pond is coming out great and its going to add value to all of the property by it. This would be a great opportunity to use the skidstear and your new power rake to dress out the this project.
Mica could be what is turning the clay white.
More likely to be a lack of the red iron oxide.

Interesting video about clay getting it done great video Chris and John thanks
Yes, damn how talented you are. Well done Chris, with team. Stay healthy.
I bet he could do his magic in sleep and come out perfect.
That white material sure looks nice. I think that would look good lining the inside face of the dam.
Cool information on the white clay. Did a little reading after that, "pure white clay because of its high kaolin content". Red clay is more organic and has a higher plasticity. Thank you and have a great day.
I see the weather is being very cooperative for ya, no slinging or pushing mud. 😁
That will be a very nice little pond when it fills.
great job buddy and great video as always buddy 😎👊🏻👍🏻 the pond is looking great
Going to have this one wrapped up in no time 👍👍
Lover the video that little pond dam is looking mighty fine 🙂
Beautiful work.👍👍👏🏻👏🏻
You do awesome work.
Not sure the white clay is the same stuff (kaolin clay) but from what Little I know about it Josiah Wedgwood had 5 tons shipped from NC to England to be used at his famous pottery factory.
It's also called Kaolin or China clay. I believe its used in certain medicines. True I googled it but I had a feeling that is what it was.
9.30 pm UK 👍

I wonder if it has a lot of calcium in it? Almost looks like gypsum
Your wife must love your hands 😉 love watching from Molalla Oregon ! Awesome work 😎
no women in his life
Just wonderful Chris 👍🏻
The pond should have a nice blue shimmer with that white bottom.
Kaolinite is a very weathered version of the iron rich clay above. It weathers from feldspar rich rocks high in aluminum silicates.
White clay like that can be used for pottery as long as it doesn't contain coarser material.
Coming along well bro it is looking good from where I sit. Bit of interesting information about the white clay too. Safe travels 👍
That white clay material would have given a beach look on one end of the pond.
Great video 👍 👍
...LOOKIN' GREAT, NICE JOB, KEEP SAFE...
Looking good the lite color clay just don't look like it would pack good thanks for the video
What a surprise…white clay!! Wonder if that’s what’s used to create porcelain ceramics 🤷♀️ This is turning into a real beauty!
It is.
Precision and Confidence!,,,Let's Dig 18,,!!! Over and Over again!!!lol
That stuff looks like beach sand
Nicely done chris I am amazed at how you turn things into that ( pretty 😍) as you say. Great job 👏 great videos 📹
Kaolinite clay. Usually found in sheets of rock type material. One of the major uses today is in making sheetrock. But has been used for centuries in making fine china and porcelain.
That is gonna be a fairly deep little pond. It ain't a cement pond like Ellie Clampett had, but the bottom is really close to cement!
Taking shape and looking 👍👍👍👍👍👍 good
As a 1 to 1 clay it has low shrink swell properties, so once compacted, it will stay compacted.
Just like I wait for 6.30am sydney Australia time

Actually that’s pretty cool that they know a geologist that can figure that out about the dirt. Who would of thunk? They look completely different!

It doesn't matter what color it is you make it all look great
I'd have thought the white dirt, by the way it was breaking up, was a decomposing shale.
