Red Clay = high iron oxide (rust) content The white is Kaolin clay. The difference is in how the soil got there. The white means it didn't travel and absorb minerals from the soils and water as it moved, the red on the other hand was deposited by water that contained a lot of iron. As a bonus the white kaolin is actually edible! It was the original binder in kaopectate before they changed it. It's also use in a lot of pills and cosmetics as well as a common paint additive.

Was just gonna post that I thought it was Kaolin clay, lol. THen seen your comment. It's also the clay used in fine ceramics to make the ceramics pure white.

The white clay is likely Bentonite, It's used in the oil industry to line mud and brine pits when the soil doesn't have enough clay. Farm tanks (ponds) are also lined with it. Its also used for kitty litter.

The red colour in clay is caused by the iron content.
Mica forms incredibly thin, flat sheets & when eroded, it helps make clay containing it somewhat faster drying & less elastic.

I wonder how many samples were taken and at what depth because there was soil transported from 'across the street.' Just curious...interesting content for sure!!

According to the all knowing internet pure clay is white due to the base material being silicates. ( white clay is the rule and not the exception) Colored clay is due to the other minerals contaminating the silicate. Who knew.

If I remember my soilscience lecturer (as part of winemaking studies). testing clay you want to make a ribbon in your hand with some water.. if it falls apart (friable) it’s more sandy. If it’s red it has iron. If it clumps together into a ribbon, it’s clay (there are dozens of different types of clay depending in its ionic bonding). If it sparkles, it has mica. It was a good 20 years since that subject… but I do recall making hundreds of ribbons and filling out evaluation forms.
