    Performance Notes
Is “Dire Wolf” the most cheerful murder ballad ever? Quite possibly! A tantalizingly ominous Robert Hunter lyric is wedded, with delightful incongruity, to a jaunty countrified melody by Jerry Garcia. The song, first performed live in 1969 and recorded for 1970’s “Workingman’s Dead,” was created during the all-too-brief period that Garcia was playing pedal steel guitar onstage with the Dead as well as New Riders of the Purple Sage (fun trivia note: since pedal steel required a musician’s full attention to play in a way that anyone would find listenable, it was damn near impossible to play it and sing simultaneously, Bob Weir sang the lead on some early versions of “Dire Wolf” so that Jerry could concentrate on the primary task at hand). Here, Dead & Company deliver the tune with the appropriate twang factor, and a fine John Mayer lead vocal. - Gary Lambert

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

John Mayer is a mighty fine guitar player. That solo is a master class in restrained technique. No rush. Plays the changes. Mixes in some very tasty double stops high on the neck. Just incredible.

We have been lucky enough to live through a time of unmeasurable change especially those of us in our twilight or mature years in the world of music and guitar playing. Some of us have music as the background to their lives, from major milestones and experiences to the smallest memory,it is the songs that are the soundtrack we each have every one unique and personal, the music takes us immediately back to the time we experience, the smells, the weather, the company, every tiniest detail. Some of us are only still alive because of the impact music has played and it is music that gives us the strength to go on and get through whatever comes. For me it was hearing shuggie Otis "chitlin blues" on my way to take an overdose of sleeping pills and whiskey as a teenager that was the moment my life was saved and since then it is music that has consistently saved me. The dead have been there the whole time ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸❤️ thanks for everything

Mayer, Oteil, and Chimenti are the perfect protégés for the Dead stylistically. I would love to see John Mayer in his solo material bring out that hippie jam side of him.

To be honest, I didn't know much at all of Mayer prior to Dead & Company's formation. I have to say his voice works really well with The Dead's sound, and it must be super cool for him as a Deadhead to sing all the songs Jerry sang! Obviously it's not the same thing but Dead & Co is still a pretty damn cool sound, not to mention, Mayer can sure play the guitar too, he's not just a voice!

In the timbers to Fennario, the wolves are running round,
The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground.
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
I sat down to my supper, 'twas a bottle of red whisky,
I said my prayers and went to bed, that's the last they saw of me.
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
When I awoke, the Dire Wolf, six hundred pounds of sin,
Was grinning at my window, all I said was "Come on in".
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
The Wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game.
I cut my deck to the Queen of Spades, but the cards were all the same.
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
In the backwash of Fennario, the black and bloody mire,
The Dire Wolf collects his dues, while the boys sing 'round the fire.
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
No, no, no don't murder me. I beg of you,
Don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.

as a new deadhead there is no way to compare the grateful dead and dead and co because they are two diferent animals. my dad has had them on my whole 14 years of existance but only two months ago have i realized how amazing they are. then i listened to a few dead and co shows and i thought they are terrible compared to the grateful dead, but i have soon come to realize that there is no way to compare them because john and jerry are such different singers and guitarists, if i had started by just listening to dead and co i would have loved the music just as much as i do the grateful dead and vice versa. they are two completely different aproaches to 1 great catalog and we should all enjoy them for what they are separately.

I appreciate that you are taking a close look and giving thought to this music. I have been listening everyday to one version or another of the Grateful Dead since 1980. I like John Mayer's contribution alot. On the other hand it seems Bob W (and perhaps the drummers) just can't or just don't want to keep a decent tempo anymore -- not to mention O'teil plays at about 10% of his capacity with this band. At this point DSO is more fun IMO. Have you heard the Dark Star from 9-19-70 or the Mountains of the Moon from Phil Lesh and Friends from 6-30-01?

I used to despise John Mayer as a young man because when he was really new and popular it seemed as though only females liked him. And my ex listened to him and it just brought painful memories back.
Then i stumbled across some of his guitar chat/tutorials on RUclips and then appearances with the Dead and I'm like in complete shock and amazement at how beautiful of a guitar player and singer he is. And the smile on his face when he was feeling that solo. Bro was on fire.

I think it’s great that the Dead has become a regular touring act. But at some point, they really need to write some new music. Nostalgia only gets you so far, and I think interest in the group will dwindle if they spend the rest of their lives solely relying on music that was written over 20 years ago.

This is the craziest comment I have ever seen about the Dead's music. A lot of the best music from shows was almost 30 years old when Jerry died almost 30 years ago. These songs are timeless. They don''t need new ones considering nearly every single great song was written by two guys who are both dead... Not sure where those songs are supposed to come from...

This isn't the Dead. It is nearly a cover band. Its great to have all this money to put tours together and try to make it look like a dead show, but it's not. You can even try to be gimmicky and have a five show tour and not repeat a song and try to fool people into think its the dead and its not even close. Every show i've seen has seemed forced and wooden. Hell, there are better dead cover bands than this one.

For Fare Thee Well which you reference here I remember every single one of the core four saying this "is not the Grateful Dead" " The Grateful Dead stopped in 1995" I heard every member say that. Dead and Company is not promoted as the Grateful Dead you'd have to semi regarded or extremely ignorant to think otherwise. Just members of the Grateful Dead playing with musicians the music that they've always played. Just slower and not as good ofcourse. Not sure but show me where Dead and Company are intentionally promoting themselves as the Grateful Dead kind of like Skinnard does.
