I love the look dave and scott give john when he drops it back into the main groove - a little after the 16 minute mark. nice breakdown and heavy drop back in. great vid, of a great band! LONG LIVE THE DEAD!
John took them in limbo, for awhile, Russo wondering what's next(a lesson from Bob to John to Joe), a few notes of Althea, band catches it, ends it great. That was old school Dead style preview from John? Well done! Love the non verbal communication! Timeless tunes!
ultimate15clb what a joke, JM comes up on my stage & has more volume than the lead guitarist, wire snips to his cord. Their guitarist was doing fine, his solo was well done. And they smashed his poor hands in my dream.
I love that the young peeps love this music!!!!!! It makes my heart sore with LOVE!! and boy do we need more of that today!!!! Peace n Love to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mayer has an awesome talent,& his dream was always to play with the Dead, "Without love & a dream it'll never come true" So glad his did,& he gets to share his awesome skills with the Deadhead family. The amount of talent on this stage is incredible, thank you for sharing. My Moms favorite song ❤
This is one of those versions that really highlights how well the bass really holds this song together. The drums were certainly imaginative and had good moments, piano was good too. John is no fuckin slouch either, I feel like his early career may have turned off the very people he is try to appeal to, to him. I think hes been great at introducing a new generation that wouldnt have listened without his involvement. His style gels with D&C perfectly, even if his voice doesnt seem like the best fit sometimes.
Garrett Welch I’ve seen the original Dead 20 times and was lucky to see a few Altheas but they never blew me away. However, I really think Mayer took the solo to a new level.
Garrett Welch No. I saw them from 85-95. Wished I’d been able to see them in the 70’s. Thing is, Althea was always a “meh” song for me as Dead tunes go - until I saw Dead and Co blaze one into the Stratosphere. But I’ll check out the one you suggest.
Garrett Welch Not saying better - but I definitely like some songs better the way he plays them - longer more soaring solos. Others were better when Jerry did - but I never saw them in 77’ during the arguably best tour they had and I’ll agree that the scarlet-fires then we’re WAY better than those I saw in the late 80’s. And yes, I’ve loved many of the wall of sound shows I’ve seen on RUclips or heard. But again, Jerry was in his prime then.

I made the mistake of choosing Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Beacon over JRAD this night after going to the 10/12/17 JRAD show the previous night. There were Mayer rumors on the 12th and I figured it was BS. I was lucky enough to get a Warren Haynes surprise appearance at TTB, which was awesome. But it didn't compare to this, which is better on RUclips than what I saw in person at the TTB show that night. The best part of this Althea (which is Mayer's favorite Dead song) is that Metzger and him and trading equally great solos. Mayer isn't the best guitarist on the stage during this song. Him and Metzger and equals. And neither of them are playing arrogantly. They're letting each other switch off taking lead. It's a beautiful thing.
If I'm ever lost or stranded in the deep woods, I hope I have a John Mayer solo to get a fire started. I'm feeling warm already, time to roast the marshmallows and make S'mores.
Wow!!!!!! With crazy fingers Johnny added to the mix what a magical night thanks for posting this as I couldn't make the show rather have me goosebumps
10:51 that groove change and Metzger following right along is pretty fucking good. Don't let Mayer's brilliant fucking solo (really really enjoying how he built his solo up to this fucking fire right at 13:19) distract you from Metzger's - he's still very much up there and amazing!
Man that drummer marched them threw that song amazing how they all got threw that song that's being a professional I even saw Mayer communicating to the singer wow. Wow John ended with a bang. To many wow moments or not enough.
@Garrett Welch As in he bleeds feel through his playing when playing dead material. He embodies it. It flows through him. Not to even to mention being the deads current guitarist, well.. yeah, I'd say he is it! Apologies if that was a tricky sentence for ya but I really didn't think this amount of explaining was needed but you're right, this is youtube and there are obviously those ignorant people posting their ignorant comments(;
@Garrett Welch Oh don't get me wrong, I much prefer Jerry!! But my point is that Mayer certainly does a better job than most when it comes to his style. In an interview Mayer said whenever he's playing Jerry's material, he's constantly asking himself "is this cool Jerry? is this close to what you would do in this situation?" and I respect that especially having played guitar for over a decade now, learning the acrobatic playing style of Jerry. I'm just boggled because it's not often you see a musician with such fluid versatility as Mayer has.. And ya know what, at the end of every debate, it always seems both sides agree with eachother all along, just miscommunication and being quick to shut the other down makes it impossible to truly understand their side. Not being bashful, I just want things to be seen for what they are. Anyways, thanks for your time if you've made it this far. Peace!
This is the song that turned Mayer onto the Dead! When he was at a pool party listening to Pandora, he had to stop everything and go see who this awesome band was! Before that he had very little knowledge of the Dead! Thanks to Don Was ,he introduced Bob Weir and Mayer ,the rest is history!
Mayer is just in another league entirely (soul wise) though I love joe Russo, but is awesome to see them push him to a higher intensity then is common in dead and co. Just killing it
I saw those guys at the Mardi gras Show in New Orleans, last week !And got the chance to take my flight back to NYC right next to the Bass player :Dave Dreiwitz and he is a handsome bass player!

Because BOBBY won't let him do his thing. Bob thinks he's the show. Absolutely wrong. Bob should hang it up and go pull his pud in a dark corner. He's only good for vocals. Give him a stool and tell him to STFU
I was there this night! My buddy was like, "yeah people are saying Mayer is here tonight," I was like "oh alright sure..." Then, second set I'm 20 feet from him playing with the boys. Damn.
Love when he went to the piano, and especially the ending "trickles" into the vocal line. And he jumped right in! Most Grateful Dead keyboard players waited for their place(shy?), and would come in late, like, can I play now? lol. He doesn't hesitate! Impressive performance! And Joe looking at John before opening line with "you?", John gives quick head shake, nah, it's you! Your band!", lol. No real words between them, but quick communication! And John takes them in to limbo, almost stopping the song. A transition coming? Now what? A lesson he learned from Dead and Company, passed on. Russo's looking at John like "where we going"(fun/scary as a band, but what the Dead loved and lived for!), and then with a few notes from John, they're prepared, and end it nicely! Interaction lesson from Bob to John to Russo. If only Jerry could have been there, after John's solo, for some real gunslinging playing, with a few "lessons" thrown in! Keep it going! It's all about the songs, the music! Timeless! Never expected much after Jerry passed away. 50th anniversary show w/Trey playing was painful to listen to, for me. Trey played terrible! A few months later ,and Dead and Company with WHO? JOHN MAYER? That pop star, heartbreaker? And I was shocked by his excellent playing and knowledge of Jerry's style. Still strange, lol, but he's the man now! Dead forever! Longer than my comment, lol!
love the drummer "slow down" at .55-ish. "I got exited there...." he says. HA-HA....done that before behind the kit. My excitement pushin the tempo a bit....

Me personally, definitely appreciative. I'm thinking Metzger was in a state of amazement/bewilderment. To me, this is Mayer's best solo take on Althea. As soon as Tom gave him the signal at 12:00, it was on.
It's really the first chance he's had to take on an uptempo version. I like bobby's "vision" of the band with Jeff/John/Oteil/(probably russo)/ .... oh god, who do we find to be the new bobby? Need to have a booming voice and be able to fill that weird guitar role.
^YES! Couldn't agree more with everything you said. A solo Russo would take over the dual drum role perfectly. Probably the only drummer alive that could actually fill both roles. Looks like we have a lot to look forward to
Also, both Mayer and Oteil have shown a huge desire to learn the music and keep it fresh and evolving. I can't wait to see what they bring this fall tour, but as much as i'm loving D&C, age is going to remain a constraining factor...though after blossom>2-night wrigley, they really really impressed me. IDK any other band with members in their 70's still banging out 3-hour shows that are good (and not completely scripted) from start to finish..... Plus the drums/space stuff has really brought a lot of younger kids into the fold. They love all the "jamtronica" and that's fine/great/dandy. Experimental is what all the other incarnations of GD lacked.
