    i can't believe that more people aren't talking abt how sketchy the whole charity front is, especially when rare beauty's whole marketing strategy is to appear trustworthy and genuine in their mental health "activism."

  • @sep.s

    The thing that gets me (apart from the issues already raised) is how the philanthropic activity is framed. We do not need more “awareness” raised, the importance of mental health has made a huge splash over the past decade, what we need is solutions to the issues that are exacerbating mental health. Solutions that in-part could be provided by the government (improved healthcare, reducing the wealth gap etc) and paid for by taxation…

    • @underskinYT
      @underskinYT  Год назад +124

      Yeah, its mostly based around awareness, theres no planned infrastructure for them to do much more than pass on money to other charities. Its obviously a good thing that they raised a lot of money, but I dont get why it couldnt either be a partnership or like a vote where customers could vote out of a set of 3 or 5 where their 1% would go

      More taxation??
      How about strengthening traditional moral values
      It’s helped before , it can help again
      The extremely rich will escape all the wealth gap reduction and taxation like they always do
      It will be up to the average people to pick up the pieces , so moral values are a more effective and less expensive solution

      If she was a heavy drug addict and alcoholic she WOULD BE DEAD- she as an autoimmune disease, if she is sabotaging her health to that extent not only would it be TRANSPARENT to see but she would NEVER BE ABLE TO HIDE IT as she would ALREADY BE DEAD.
      It’s not a PR team that’s supporting her, it’s common sense and a basic health understanding.
      There is a reason why this rhetoric is only supported by hate accounts like ESMG & Shallon Lester - where all medical basis is completely ignored.

      Ok she drinks, but she's not an alcoholic, and this channel just brushing over that in favor for a dry statement about her prs team doing good for her is irresponsible because any of this goes beyond her makeup brand, and y'all don't know her personally or if of the things you are saying is 100% without a shadow of a doubt true, but how many countless celebrities do things on camera or in public that people disregard or act as if didn't happen, I mean Ariana licked a donut she didn't purchase, snapped at the lady working behind the counter and literally said she hates America, and actually said out of her own mouth she hopes her fans die after signing their autographs but NO BODY EVEN MENTIONS THAT.

    • @underskinYT
      @underskinYT  Год назад +25

      It certainly would be better if more than 1% went towards charity - or if they were raising awareness for something that socially doesnt have enough like AIDS which people know exist but dont seem to know a lot about, Cystic Fibrosis or even perhaps a specific mental health issue like OCD which again people seem to know exists but dont know a lot about. Just saying ‘mental health’ is suspiciously broad, and as you say, high quality mental health services are more certainly needed, which imo would be aided by not being so broad and to target certain issues. Idk if most celebrity brands work this way, I dont have the statistics, but I always approach charities with caution, celebrity or not, as a lot can be hidden behind a charitable front.

It's hard for me to find malicious intent from Selena directly with this decision. I suspect she wasn't required to be nose-deep into the specifics of the financial decisions for her brand, just like she isn't required to be up in the lab. I like to believe she is authentic with her purpose, because other than this I can't think of another incident of potential hypocrisy. I’m a bit cynical when it comes to celebrity-founded a charitable organizations. Most of the time it’s almost never necessary for a celebrity to start their own charity to advocate for some thing that has a lot of charitable organizations within that space. Perhaps they want to have more control over how the funds are managed and how the mission statement is maintained.
    However, her company’s relationship is Hopewell is rather convoluted.
    I don’t believe that this is something she came up with all by herself. It must’ve been some thing suggested to her by her business partners, but I still find it odd that she agreed to do this. This is a really well thought and explained video. Really enjoyed it. My only issue is how "lobbying" is framed (everywhere in the media, not only in your video). Lobbying is not a bad thing on its own, the world wouldn't really be functioning without it. Lobbying has been existing for centuries and one of its main advantages is that it brings to the attention of legislators some important issues raised by certain "interest groups". Moreover, oftentimes politicians & legislators aren't familiar with the technicalities involved in EVERY SINGLE SECTOR they write laws upon (think laws on the aviation industry, pollution, house construction...) - but people that know that sector can further clarify doubts. Lobbying is legal and useful - of course, this does not mean there aren't people who can and will take advantage of it for personal gain, that is not what I want to say. I just want to put out there that lobbying is not inherently bad, even if it does have a bad connotation.

    Exactly! Unlike Rihanna, Selena made herself! her story! And her illness, the core of her business! Which in turn linked her directly with her brand! Which is a huge mistake! Meanwhile, Rihanna launched fenty without linking the brand with her! Even though Rihanna is the face of her business, Fenty somehow managed to still operate independently away from Rihanna's fame! Rare beauty is dependent on how long Selena can continue to stay relevant and continue to garner her fans sympathy, you can't make a business sustainable by relying on fan's sympathy! At one point, even if they like Selena and are huge fans of her, they will get tired of her constant sob story, and eventually, they will drop her brand! There is a reason why people are still buying Fenty while other celebrity brands are flopping! The quality of Rihanna's Fenty brand is superior to many other celebrity brands, including Rare Beauty! Even last year, Rihanna's fenty beauty doubled its revenue! So I don't think Rihanna's fenty beauty has fallen like some people claim! in fact, they are doing better than ever! and regarding her charity, yeah I find it weird and disturbing that Selena herself is not in control of her own charity foundation, and that she partner with such a shady company! there is definitely something dark going on with her charity!

That or the unwillingness for govs to adapt laws that allow for these grey areas because they also benefit from them. Theyre not doing anything illegal, because wealthy people can afford to manipulate work arounds and they know it. Its frustrating, but Im not really sure what we can do to help unless it becomes a bigger issue, its known, of course it is, but I guess its just not a huge issue because it ‘only’ hurts the tax man and doesnt directly hurt individuals (though it does indirectly)

The inherent problem in creating more “awareness” for mental health is that people will seek more and earlier treatment thus, be exposed to psych drugs at younger ages and for more extended lengths. The real solutions to mental health are complex and require a mix of community building, trauma healing, and social support. And honestly, even though I think it's a little misleading to the consumer, I think the set up of Rare along with the Rare Beauty Fund is very interesting, we don't see that kind of planning in cosmetics often. Ultimately, for me, I just like to see a good interesting business, if it comes from a celebrity then thats awesome, but often they're either licensed brands (think like REM or the many perfume lines) or they're pre-planned companies with a celebrity stuck onto it (Kylie Beauty). Good examples of companies that aren't like this would be Jeffree Star, Dainty Doll by Nicola Roberts (it folded many years ago) and Huda Beauty, all of which were the celebrity themselves' idea

They where able to form a rounded out collection with running shades in each color family and kept everything at a low price, relative to Sephora pricing. That being said I realized, like many people, the blushes are very over powering and fade. One dot is not enough but two is too much. I tried some of the lip products and they are good but the market is so saturated, there are cheaper alternatives. I feel like people are buying rare just because of selena, her products are good but not as good as Fenty

      I don’t care for either Selena or Rihanna but I have to say Rare has better products. I have dry-combination skin and all Fenty foundations even the “hydrating” one looks cakey, heavy and dry on me.
      The makeup crayons which I think Fenty calls Match Sticks are the driest and most patchy product ever. The liquid lipstick is horrible as well, very drying.
      Rare however have their ups and downs as well. Their under eye brighter (which is a blatant copy of Trish McEvoy under eye brighter) is fabulous! It’s beautiful.

    As long as the minimal clean girl/old money aesthetic is in she will do ok but the minute bright colors start trending again she’s in trouble.

      I don't think she is that much into clean girl. She has a lot of bright colors and her highligters have the glitters in the certain light. I don't find this brand clean girl really, they are affordable, and they don't have dramatic palettes, but that's fine. Her blushes are pigmented so much if you put more then one spot, and with one spot you must be on some level to work it out, they are not beginner friendly. Luckily there are a lot of other brands that have liquid blushes, so I can tell. Also, when I compare this to some high end CT, liquids don't last that good. But I see her aestethic close to CT and all that glow and glitter but in the cheaper version and without that small eye palettes variants. I also couldn't work lip oils on my dry lips, so uneven and I like actually the darker colors of those.

    Shame on Rare Beauty, such a horrible and deceitful enterprise. I'm shocked! One question: I always thought that Rare Beauty was created with the help of Sephora/LVMH. Do you have any insight? As we all know, Sephora/LVMH likes to create a brand of its own.

    selena isn’t a saint, she’s a human being. everyone casting judgement towards her needs to remember we’re all flawed, we’ve all done bad things, we can all improve and we’ve all got to take accountability for our wrongdoings. that doesn’t mean that as we all mess up that we’re all bad people.
    i think the media depictions of her being this angelic being who can do no wrong is inaccurate and harmful in the same was as continually villainising someone who has done wrong. i wish more balanced views of people in the spotlight were provided.
    also no brand is perfect and will often have areas to improve upon. i love the ethos of the brand but i agree that we do need far more than just awareness of mental health issues throughout society; we need actionable solutions put in place.

    • @underskinYT
      @underskinYT  Год назад +2

      I really agree that blaming her directly is quite unfair, no one person could make this kind of company at all, and youre right, its equally damaging to portray her as a saint for exactly this reason. Its now more shocking that *she* is tied to this, which isnt really fair

    • @underskinYT

      1% of proceeds go towards a fund which pays Selena and other heads a salary, it's actually a lot less than 1% that actually ends up going towards "raising awareness" of mental health

    Rare Beauty is my first brand that I follow as I'm not that educated in terms of make up and the product works well for me but evven when I first read up on the company, seeing the 1% donation quoted everywhere in the marketing and website was so embarrasing and flimsy. only 1%??? like you can't manage 5% , 1 is such an insult that they would have been better off not doing any percent and just claim to donate millions every once in a while.
    for me theres something extra slimy about using good causes to prop yourself up like that and its really souring me to 'Rare Beauty.' I'd like to believe that Selena isn't shady enough to take advantage of others like this but she is a quietly intellegent woman who knows how to play people and I can only hope that if she ever becomes aware of her brands fragility, in terms of ethics, she will actively pivot the brand into actual charity. Not only that but I agree with the other comments. We don't need awareness. we need action and change and support systems for the public and needy.
