The Rise and Fall of FENTY

  • Rihanna's fashion house FEИTY lasted only a few years before it really crashed and burned, but why? In my opinion its down to LVMH's poor planning, lack of consistent vision and lack of consistency with the other Fenty lines that were already successful at the time; Fenty Beauty and Savage x Fenty. FEИTY as a fashion house really is a great study in lack of authenticity in a brand, becuase unlike the beauty line of the same name, it just couldn't give an authentic vision of itself which led to honestly a very confused and disappointing fashion label that was a waste of 60 million euros.

As a customer, the deciding factor to not purchase from the Fenty brand is greediness. I wanted to buy cute overprized Rihanna underwear. I did NOT, however, want to pay the ridiculous OBLIGATED $50 a month subscription to be able to purchase from the brand (which was supposed to provide “benefits” such as early access to launches).
In this economy, the Fenty business model does not fly with me.

All the Fenty businesses are run as separate entities, I know that Savage has been having a lot of negative press specifically about that, I’m not really sure why they have that business model, I haven’t looked into it, but I find it interesting

@@bananamary5907 while it wasn’t overpriced per say I personally have seen so many videos were people can find dupes for a fraction of the cost from fast fashion brands. And not even because they copied her (which that obviously happens too), the designs are just so generic and non-brand specific that they already exist in the marketplace. The only things kind of working in her favour are celebrity name recognition and size inclusiveness but when you’re charging an outrageous membership fee for the “pleasure” of shopping with them it automatically negates the pros.

Unfortunately the failure of this project was pretty predictable. The first problem to me is that Rihanna is neither a stylist nor a designer. Her brand had no identity not even a specific style to it, or at least a particular trait that would make it unique and stand out from the other brands on the market. In addition her fanbase could not afford a 2000 $ dress or a 500 $ pair of sunglasses. Their marketing strategy for Fenty beauty was successful and smart. It was inclusive, different and offered high quality products at an affordable or at least accessible price, because unlike Fenty, a lot of people can buy a lip gloss or a lipstick even if it's a 30$ or 25 $. Clothing however is something else. This strategy was just not applicable to a high end couture house.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  2 года назад +257

You’re completely right, the brand never knew who it was, and it didn’t know who its customer was, they should’ve known it would fail from the beginning

I agree that she is not a designer in the conventional sense but she had had so many collaborative ventures in the past that it made sense for her to have a clothing line. i do agree that the brand lacked identity and their only selling point was rihanna which was a difficult sell given the prices of the items. i think her accessories were cool though and i wish they had began with just sunglasses, jewelery and perfumes before venturing fulling into clothes

Agree. I think, in general, people are more inclined to spend more money on lingerie rather than everyday looks. If someone is going to spend that much money on everyday clothes, it has to be versatile and very original to be purchased. But you will have such a niche group that can afford it. I'm shocked she didn't make her everyday clothes cheaper knowing her target audience.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  2 года назад +67

I agree with both of you, she just clearly didn’t understand her audience well enough to base her business around. Actually, I don’t necessarily think it was her fault, she did all of those collaborations before with High Street brands, which makes a lot of sense, but I think LVMH basically gifted her a company that didn’t take her captive audience into account, which is a real shame, and set her up to fail

The first time I purchased something they automatically signed me up for a subscription which was extremely difficult to cancel. There’s a common theme here with celebrity Beauty product lines, in that they’re all declining. We’re in a recession and during the pandemic, beauty sales were drastically declining but skincare products were actually on the rise. That was to be expected since people weren’t really going out. But this also trickled into 2023, as there are less sales in general (check annual reports from Sephora or Ulta for example from 2020-2022) for beauty products.
Lots of people are realizing that these products are marketed to a low to med income market, but have high price tags, so it was only a matter of time that these celeb lines would decline in sales. It also isn’t exclusive to Fenty. Rare Beauty (Selena), Kylie, Ariana, etc. All sales are declining steadily.
What is interesting to me is that in contrast, brands like SKIMS by Kim K are more likely to steadily grow in success, as it’s neutral and more people are seeking “comfort” products. Kim K isn’t my fav celeb to fund, but Skims is legit good. Bras are comparable in price to VC but way more comfortable and better fit. Her sizing is inclusive as well. These celebs need to stop cheaply going for the Beauty route and start going more into home goods or inclusive clothing lines.

The clothes dont look classy and elegant, they look kardashian-ish and it ignores the diversity of clientele , for myself i dont mind spending money on expensive clothes but they need to have an air of class and elegance, perhaps even "old money" luxury. There needs to be more diversity in ideas not just skin tone and body types, everything looks too much these days.

When Rihanna wears them is one thing because she has that great celebrity appeal so could wear anything and still look fantastic. Take that sparkly sack she wore in This is What You Can for music video. She looked fabulous and chic! But could any of us pull it off the same way? Not so sure about that. So my point is when you separate those clothes from Rihanna image they’re just basic clothes, t-shirts, blazers and jeans. No wonder people tried them on and were like ok what exactly am I paying for? A shirt that looks like Uniqlo or some high fashion stuff?

And, the clothing pieces weren’t inherently bad, they were very minimal, but if it was part of the DNA that would’ve been fine, the problem I had with it was that the DNA was confused. They never spent a time to really develop the idea of who Fenty was, in order to sell their vision successfully. If you look at Victoria Beckham, or Stella McCartney, both celebrity brands that have developed their own sense of identity that really sells the brand of the public, Fenty never did that

On the subject of the awards and glowing articles: this isn't uncommon for mediocre art in any medium. The illusion of success can often be more important than success. Big brands have more sway, and sway is more important than quality. True for the Oscars, the Grammys, you name it. Emily in Paris was nominated in two Golden Globe categories, then it was revealed they had essentially bribed the judges, which was a common practice. If you can get critics on your side and a bunch of awards, most people will assume you earned them.
Consumerism and capitalism are never good. Some people viewed this as a win for a black female entrepeneur, but you can't put a progressive facade on a toxic power structure. There were also allegations of poor quality and sweatshops - which is true of the majority of both luxury and fast fashion.

EXCELLENT video. I fully agree. As a consumer, the clothes were boring. She really could’ve done something standout. Her shoes were standout because I have seen other brands dupe her style. I’m just not sure who the originator was but I do know that style was popular. Also, you’re right, the price was wrong. She could’ve done some lux items but even when designer brands pair up with H&M
Or other brands they have a price offering that’s reflective of their market. H and m will have a higher price for some and lower price for other things. You’re right the price was not inclusive and that’s a marker of her brand. I do think Rihanna can bounce back from this and I wish she did/could. Even with just a swimwear line to start. There are so many possibilities! I also think this goes to show that a failure doesn’t make YOU a failure. Rihanna is successful but she didn’t do well in this space, at the time. It doesn’t mean she can’t bounce back and her overall success proves she’s not a failure.

That was a great business analysis. Here's a story...I met a company years ago that wanted to work with Rihanna, as a matter of fact, they said they were working on creating a clothing line for her. Fast forward. If you don't know your brand, your business personality, your archetype, your customer, and so on, your business may have some issues. No matter who you are. I also agree to start with less SKUs and not being everything to everyone is great advice. Also, business failure is a good thing too because you can learn from it. You don't want to offend your target and you need to know who you are as a company. Some Artists are faces of their brands and are not involved with the business aspect. Also, not being a majority owner can leave you out of the decision-making, as an owner.

Apparently she just slapped her name on savage and wore the hell out of some of the clothes to make it look more expensive (and Im sure they made her the highest quality stuff for photoshoots) and that was enough for people to buy. The industry party and lack of real marketing was so Important because I felt that was EXACTLY what killed it. I LOVED the construction of her jackets and really wanted the pieces! I think they should have pushed harder longer. Their marketing was lazy and not impactful. I actually felt like their line was cohesive. I would actually adore having everything in the collection other than the shoes.

I think the problem is really way more simple than what’s even explained.
Rihanna isn’t an innate fashionista. She has always had a TEAM of stylists and visionaries behind her. People wanted the Fenty line because they wanted to be able to pop up to an event like Rihanna, and look like Rihanna…the Rihanna an A&R team created. So the problem is even Rihanna is dressed by someone else. You can’t sell fashion when you aren’t the brains behind your most coveted looks.
The other more obvious issue…Rihanna’s interest change with the wind. That would be fine if she stuck with something but she tends to lose steam along the way. If you’re building a brand primarily off of your celebrity, you can’t disappear for nearly a decade doing everything BUT what gave you relevancy to begin with.

I agree this brand was doomed from the start. They applied the typical "famous celebrity launches clothing line" strategy from the 2000's that would normally place merchandise in a low-budget department store like Kohls or TJ-Maxx and instead tried to compete with Dior, Celine, Jill Sander, etc. No one respects Rihanna as a clothing designer or artistic director, she is not the author of her most famous looks (that would be her iconic stylists), and she has absolutely zero experience designing clothing. I'm not a fan of Pharrell taking over at LV, but at least he has some experience and a unique perspective/style that is wholly attributed to his own personal decisions. We need to stop hyping up celebrities to run fashion labels and let actual designers do their thing.

I think that the people involved think that just by pushing paid articles that people would fawn over it just by attaching Rihanna's likeness. It was never Rihanna's brand. She sold out. And that's why she was never in control. People saw Fenty something to bridge not only race and size but to an extent a mass appeal for Rihanna's seemingly humble persona. That was what they failed to consider. In the end, Fenty became this snobbish brand (much like the rest if these fashion houses) that it tried to deviate from in the first place.

Fenty really and truly did nothing for race progression nor body positivity. In fact, it made it worse by depicting Black women in racially stereotypical roles (the sleazy branding of Savage. BTW, "savage" was a racist word that was used by White colonizers to describe Indigenous and African natives and it's still used as such), and not even having proper bra sizing. Every woman with huge boobs isn't obese, and everybody isn't just skinny or fat. Plus, she has the tendency to kiss the asses of rich white men and just men in general, especially abusive men, criminal men, and male pedos/rapists. She's nothing but a pawn to perpetuate toxic capitalism and toxic patriarchy under the guise of "girl boss". And you're right. I believe Rihanna can bring her brand back with better planning and market research. I think they could stick with accessories, as they sold well, and maybe do better on the clothing. From what I gathered FENTY was an "affordable" luxury brand targeting upper middle class to upper class people who can afford to spend a couple hundred dollars on a shirt or dress. But of course if Rihanna wanted to be inclusive, she could've done more research on how she could've priced her items better to capture a wider market. Kinda like what Ciara is doing with her brand, Lita. You could look into it and do a video if you think it's interesting enough. But all in all I find celebrity brands to be hit or miss at the end of the day! But I do admire Rihanna for creating Fenty Beauty and Fenty Savage because even though we know they're her brands, they also have developed a life and following of their own.

Beauty, and Savage, have both managed to make their own individual identity, when you think about Fenty beauty, you know what you’re thinking of, and when you think of Savage Fenty, though it is a different image, you immediately know what image to think of. With the Fenty fashion house, there was no such marketing, they did not have an identity in which to sell to people, and it’s set it up to fail from the beginning. Then, on top of that you are the fact that they didn’t understand who their target market was, the captive audience, and so the price point was wildly unexpected, it was just a huge fail. I’ve never heard of Ciara’s brand, but I’ll look into it. Thank you 💕

I can’t name one celebrity brand from the 90s, 00s, or 10s that’s relevant today. The original Fenty market is now in their 30s-40s with families and have moved on. Tbh! As a fashion designer i didn't even know that they did actually launch a Lux segment brand lol it shows how irrelevant it was. The main problem with these brands is that you definitely need to have hero products or to know hollow gaps in the market for you to succeed as a brand irrespective of who the brand ambassador is. The face can give you the buzz but old school word of mouth promotions are the thing which carries the brand on the back. With this segment they failed because there were no consumer connections, neither there was any hero product or experience which was lacking in the market already. Fenty x savage got accepted and well loved is because of fall of VS and all the demand of inclusivity of bigger sizes in lingerie which the world never gave. With Fenty beauty, of course the wide shade range is one of the factors it got in the game quick and became huge.

You’re right that usually a company will need a Cashcow to sustain long-term growth. In a sense they had that with the sunglasses, from what I’ve read, they sold very well, but without design integrity, and a clear message it was certainly pound to fail

Well done Rihanna. You've understood the transient nature of things & metamorphosised each time to bring creativity and innovation to the world. You have an indomitable Spirit and are not solely defined by Fenty.
As others glory in Fenty's demise "I shall yet rise" and leave the critics to wallow in their maladorous quagmire of envy.

Yeah, I don’t think this was Rihanna‘s fault at all, I think she was effectively gifted a company that was doomed to fail, and they had hoped a celebrity would be enough to save it or something, because really their planning for this company on her behalf was terrible. And structure wise probably had very little to do with Rihanna too 🤷

When I saw the title I thought it was abt her make up brand. I was so confused since I thought her make up brand is successful. Apparently there are Fenty & Fenty Beauty...

The name FENTY was the first problem. Too close to FENDI.

It's hard to believe that LVMH, the world's biggest fashion company, could handle one of its celebrity brands so poorly. It makes me think back to what Kanye said about the gatekeeping in the fashion industry. Things like pricing, product identity and market reach are the bread and butter for fashion companies - there's no way an industry giant like LVMH could get that wrong! The fact that she had the most powerful man in the fashion world attend her launch party but couldn't get her clothing line on a fashion show speaks volumes about their commitment to her brand.

They also really bad they failed Christian Lacroix. So clearly their talents aren’t building a brand it’s in turning something that’s already got hyped into something that’s profitable
