    8:49 it’s so funny that Demna wanted to put a DHL t-shirt on the runway as a reference to his frustrations with how expensive it was for him to ship stuff via DHL as a young designer only to make his DHL T-Shirt crazy expensive.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  23 дня назад +14

      He really understood irony in a way that was so unique and funny. Perhaps ot was just that we got used it it and always expected more that it became hard to live up to in the end

    I remember the patchwork jeans, the sock boots, and the high price hoodies and tees at the beginning. But as you stated, they got lost in the shuffle when Demna went to Balenciaga because Balenciaga got the better pieces and had the legacy to warrant the higher prices.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  23 дня назад +6

      They lost their point of difference, and instead of doubling down, they tried to ride on his appointment coattails

  • @AndrewParkHwan

    In a way I feel like Vetements was a lightning in a bottle brand that could never sustain itself as long as people profitting off the brand wished they did. Demna’s Balenciaga completely eclipsed Vetements at one point. It almost became redundant to most. But it’s still a pivotal start to what seems normal to us now. Great video!

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  23 дня назад +7

      They couldve so easily differentiated though. Balenc could have been streetwear with Balenc couture cut and sentiment and Vet couldve continued to be 20 minute design made as pure as possible. Theres a huge chasm of difference but 🤷

  • @ivanmyles

    I appreciate their original disdain for superfluous design, but cynical, low quality, image-based branding is just as empty. A few pieces were interesting, but many looks seemed more about styling-available ready-to-wear garments put together by a professional stylist.
    Love your editing of the SS15 collection at 2:27 with the split screen and speed ramps. Well done!

    • @understitchYT

      I think a cynicism pov in fashion is mostly abscent today because of it. The brands pov slowly transitioned from cynical to sarcastic or ironic over the demna years and while I like it, we havent had a strong and lasting cynic since McUeen really

    I've always been split about Vetements because I don't like irony in fashion, but I do like the weird stuff they put out like those absurdly oversized looks. I think the DHL thing was just trolling to get press attention and it worked, but the self-reference in the latest collection does not. Those minidresses look like their own Shein rip offs. Give me strange: upside down, oversized, or even distorted florals. That's what I'm here for. If it's actually going to sell is another matter of course.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  23 дня назад +1

    Though it came and went it’s easily the most influential fashion brand of the last 15 years. With their insane prices on basics (hoodies, trainers, t-shirts) they enabled the rest the fashion brands to be able to do the same. They made people comfortable with paying over a thousand on a hoodie or a tshirt. Even shoes. The rest of the industry followed suit.

    • @understitchYT

    This brand has made two of my favorite looking high heels/boots of all time. One had a cigarette lighter, the other boot had half of a bike reflector. Never seen anything like that and it just works.
    Edit: The more I think about it, is this the designer equivalent of a “one hit wonder”? Seems like it took over and instantly disappeared. I can’t help but wonder if something like that would happen to another like KidSuper for instance (not that I want that to happen but you get the idea hopefully).

    • @understitchYT

    I recall the selection that Vetements had in Harrods in London a few years back, the brand truly peaked at that point. Now I feel it sort of echoes the same fate as Jacquemus with the supposed beef between Demna and his brother sort of having the infamy overshadow the brand itself

    Ironic dressing is just a prank on consumers that has gone too far, as any trend it will die out eventually, the thing I don't understand is why balenciaga still got another contract with demna... This selling trash to the rich is fading, now you can go to any Walmart and look around and everyone looks balenciaga just because they are truly poor and not caring about fashion. If since the beginning was about the clothes why we keep seeing ticktocks about the poor quality at balenciaga items? As long as the consumers finally admit they have been conned for years this 2 scammers are going to still be around.

    • @13579zcbm
      @13579zcbm 23 дня назад +1

      True! It was really cool in 2014 but now this vibe is so ubiquitous. Seeing it on a runway feels a bit out of date. Celine and Chloe are like the antithesis of these brands now and ‚normal clothes’ now feel refreshing again (maybe influenced by dime square)

    • @understitchYT

    SPENDING close to 600$ on a pair of rock n republic jeans back in 2015 was sorta a thing back then. So 200$ on a DHL t-shirt wasn't really an issue. Maybe it was me but, Did it feel like the current runway was the last one? The brothers walked the show at the end, seemed like a good bye. hopefully the sale of the brand won't lose the fire they once had, otherwise Kohl's discount racks might be its next stop. I really dont like VTMNTS. Older vetements clothes, especially the hoodies with that iconic label on the hood, are honestly still extremely popular on resell sites like grailed. The design philosophy change you were talking about 23 minutes makes a lot of sense. There is something weirdly appealing about vetements ripping designs/images/logos to use as their own (EX: TFD bomber, titanic hoodie, ecstasy hoodie and more.)

    I mean, are we really expected to think that after a brand run by two brothers falls apart because one leaves, it’s gonna be exactly the same and have the same ethos that they had back in the day? It would make sense if they strayed from the initial idea, especially after the brothers fell out. Maybe them taking a copycat approach to Balenciaga could be interesting, like blending their remixing of logos and inspiration from bootleg clothes with the narrative of a bitter brother mocking his siblings’ successful fashion brand

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  23 дня назад

      God I love cottweiler, but actually Im planning a small pivot from here into videos that are even more researched. I want to make longer deeper videos on bigger brands who I really dont have time, with the current upload schedule to cover. This video is the start of that

    Demna should go to Vetements
    Martine Rose should go to Balenciaga (while staying on her own label)
    Guram should do something more original

    Well, at least archivists will have a helluva time. It’s not like they DIDN’T have a spark in fashion. Vetements is like the Delorean of fashion. An unmatched mark in the fashion that came and went

    Guram simpy has no talents in fashion design, he has failed to come up with any ideas of his own, he even tried doing the sub label “Vtmnt” at some point and completely failed, if u look at Vetements products on any online retailers now, u can still see many references to latest Balenciaga designs. I just wonder when is it really going end? it seems like Vetements is still somewhat surviving on the surface (having gigi hadid, travis scott walking the show, many celebrities still wearing their clothes for red carpet events, performances) , but i bet the sales numbers are shit now. Its only a matter of time they have to shut down the brand for good.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  22 дня назад

      I think it’s unfair to say that he doesn’t have talent, but mostly I think that it shouldn’t matter, if it began as a collective, I don’t really understand why it can’t be a collective again

    demna worked at margiela for a couple of years and half of his ideas come from there. the other half is soviet chic. the faceless collective at the beg of vetements? margiela did it. even the vibe of the first catwalk is margiela. not to mention endess ideas that came later: tabi shoes, a top made of belts, models with covered faces, using tape to make "clothes". thank god for uncultured people :)

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  20 дней назад

      The margiela influence in the whole concept of the brand is so inherent. The idea of making clothes to simply be good clothes is very Margiela coded. But because it was produced in the ironic ‘undesigned’ way, it was almost as if it was Margiela but if it was the opposite approach

    • @andreeapopa7317
      @andreeapopa7317 20 дней назад

      @@understitchYT you refer to their words. i'm referring to their actions. the destructured clothes, the full body suits that so closely resemble margiela toile dresses, the sock shoes, i could go on for a while. demna is a great copy cat, not a creator. lucky for him, kering gave him a huge budget and the archive of another actual fashion genius to play with. profit comes first, even in spite of the pedo scandal that i hoped they won't be coming back from. but money buys a lot of things and most of the public has little to no awareness. the world we live in
