This is far from perfect but it's a great value at $39. The graphics and sound are not accurate (the sound being the biggest issue) but for casual gamers looking to play some old games again I think it's fine given the price tag. The included controller is pretty good too.
More serious gamers should look to the FPGA based clones, specifically the $170-$185 RetroUSB AVS and the super crazy $450 Analogue NT Mini.

Lon I got school tomorrow, you're not helping
+Balkar Aulakh :) I found myself with an extra two hours tonight so this video got out tonight vs. Tuesday afternoon :). Sorry:)
Thanks for the review dude! I just canceled my order with amazon. The audio and controller lag is a deal breaker. Will save my money for the nicer options:-)
retron is amazing ! nes machine to play all games , stunning ! i LOOOVE
Nice review. I ordered mine last week as a cheap temporary replacement, as I went to review and controller and discovered my NES giving me the blinky red light of death. Sad to hear it doesn't support flash carts, but seems solid overall for a mere $40.
Why not just invest the $40 into a product called Blinking Light Win, it fixes that issue completely. It's easy to install as well, takes what maybe 20 minutes at the most.
www.arcadeworks.net/blw - This is where you get it.
Isn't the blinky red light on regular NES's caused by dirty pins? Maybe try opening up the console and cleaning the pins. I could be wrong though.
It's caused by a problem with the pins. Dirt/dust is just a common cause. Already thoroughly cleaned my games and the slot. Didn't do anything. Ordered a replacement pin slot, we'll see if it fixes it.
Thanks Lon, I do appreciate this review as I had thought about picking up a clone Nes for the fun of it.
It's a clone that plays CV3, so it's automatically on my radar. Another awesome review man
Thanks for telling us it doesn't work with Everdrive flash carts. I just cancelled my order.
The lag is a deal breaker for me. That's why I sold my Retron 5.
I love that console 🕹️🎮
Excellent review Lon! I really wish that more NES soundtracks were available on iTunes. I'd purchase and download the Batman one right now!
You know you can download the soundtrack right?
I have had it for YEARS. It's not hard to find. Google is your friend.
Cool stuff Lon. I prefer the RetroPie route myself. Although I do hope we get something like the Analogue NT for 16/32 bit games one day.
Also you can put Batocera Linux on a flashdrive if you got an old laptop/PC, instant multi emulator machine with a great interface.
Bad color palette, off music, no flashcart support, and 84ms of input lag = BIG NOPE for me. Thanks for the review.
The lag is the real dealbreaker for me. HD is nice but not that nice.
Thanks for the review, Lon. Too bad about the subpar audio and video quality but I suppose that it's an instance of getting what one pays for. I doubt that anyone with a substantial library of physical carts who is looking for a new-hardware solution for high quality NES picture quality (as opposed to modded original hardware) would go for something like this over the far superior AVS. If you don't want to drop the money on either an AVS or an NT Mini then an emulation box seems like the better way to go in terms of quality of gameplay for the price. The only advantage that the Retron HD seems to have over the AVS or emulators (aside from price) is light gun game compatibility via CRT. I assume that it works with R.O.B. too.
I picked up an NT Mini based on MyLifeInGaming's review and I agree with you that it's absolutely spectacular. I just wish that there was a similar option for playing 16-bit games in perfect quality. Can't wait for Kevtris to finish developing the fabled Zimba 3000!
Michael Baker and yes, I DO have an nes avs tattoo and no you can’t see it
Hey Lon ,this is a good review , also extra thanks for testing the Zapper compatibility ,, my favorite Zapper game "Freedom-Force", ,,,I wonder now just how many NES clones ARE compatible with the Zapper ,,thanks again for the video Lon ,, your vids look more pro than mine ,,have fun man , 😎👍
I modded my top loader nes with the hi def nes kit. If you wanted to check it out then return it I would be cool with it.
I find this console lags a little more in 4:3 mode. I believe the tv itself is actually streching the 4:3 image it's receiving from the the console when set to 16:9.
Great review. Thanks.
ya it was a good video, easy to watch and understand
Great review. Good info presented here
Nice review!
I don't understand why everyone says it's not the color or sound they remember? I was 9 when the NES came out and I sure don't remember these details about the NES.
Depending on your CRT TV back in the 80's, your sound and picture could look and sound slightly different than your friends setup. Not many TV's were even close to being calibrated for their NES gaming setup in the 80's. Plus a LCD, LED, OLED TV is going to look different color wise than any CRT back in the 80's. Sound is really going to be different since flat screen TV's have a much smaller cabinet for the speakers than a CRT TV. Enough to even shift the pitch of high and low notes depending on speaker, speaker enclosure, digital or analog sound, etc.
Unless it is ridiculously off, it doesn't bother me. I'd rather pay $40 for this instead of $400.
PoseMotion as far I can hear, there seems to be a channel that is off on the clone systems. It's not terribly off for some games. I actually don't mind the music so much as the sound effects: try playing Super Mario Brothers and hearing Mario jump. It sounds nothing like it's supposed to! But I agree... not worth paying $400
Its a solid product for the casual gamer who doesnt have a CRT
Love your vids lon.i subscribed.
The audio sounded a bit cleaner on the clone
$40 is a good amount to put towards the much superior RetroUSB AVS system.
I've had mine since October and, aside from a few carts not working due to the cartridge port being too short for some games (they've promised a fix!), it's been perfect.
I have the Retron3 HD and the NES slot works with my NES flashcard (N8 or something like that).
I have this unit. It plays all my games except, Adventure Island. It works in my original nes but not on my Retron HD.
Hi Lon, Love your channel. Which switcher do you use for toggling between camera 1,2 and computer? I tried using an HDMI switcher with a HDMI capture card, but every time I switch between one HDMI to another there is black screen while it switches while in your videos it is seamless.
Right now I'm using a Tricaster which is very pricey. But there are some lower cost ones at around $1,000 like the Blackmagic ATEM or the Cerevo LiveWedge. My advice is to get another capture card and use Xsplit, OBX, etc. and have your PC do it if it's powerful enough.
Lon.TV: thank you
Hey! Does the input connection affect the visuals/colour palette? I've heard rumour that the component connection over HDMI fixes a a lot of the colour issues but haven't actually seen any visual evidence?
the lack of support for flash carts is a real let down. I have also seen some reviews stating Ninja Gaiden did NOT run. All though these are issues are not total deal breakers They do make me wonder what other games I will encounter that will NOT run well.
Over all though that $40 price tag is still mighty tempting.
This one is an NES on a chip vs. an emulator but the chip doesn't seem to like the flash carts unfortunately.
Lon.TV Oh really? I thought since it was a Retron it'd just be a scaled down version of their other products. Wonder what causes the incompatibility then?
My guess is probably the power requirements the flash carts have over a traditional cart. Homebrews seem to work so whatever these flash carts are doing differently makes an impact.
Lon.TV That actually makes sense. It'd also explain some of the game incompatibilities.
BRIAN WALKER i agree ...no flashcart is a let down...maybe the everdrive will update to work..but...ahhhh..that is a major let down..
Great review. Could you do the same with the retro trio hd? I can't wait to see it.
low cost ? 40 € for a 1985 technology is very expensive to me ^^
This is good for plaing in retro games?
No. It's trash.
I pre-ordered this month ago but Amazon still hasn't shipped it.
Hey Lon! Have you done a review for the Hyperkin Retron 2 HD? It's gaining some popularity and it's 50 bucks. Let me know what you think!
+Enrique Chacon are you sure it's HD?
Lon.TV I just looked. I thought it was an HD model but I was mistaken. Still, for those trying to get their hands on an SNES classic, this might be a good buy!
Enrique Chacon There's actually the Supa Retron HD releasing soon.
Pls do a review to the SAMSUNG S25HG50FQU :D
Lon, question. I have the Retron 5, and I won't let my kids use it unsupervised because of it's issues with pins coming loose when people carelessly yank out cartridges (particularly in the NES slot) Do you think the HD would have the same issue? That yank you gave makes me think the answer would be yes.
The only complaint I have is the slot on the system is kinda tight . So pulling the game cartridges out . Can be a little hard to do . But other than that everything else is just fine .
The Gamerztek NES clone seemed far better when it came to color and pixels. Honestly though unless someone had a large NES collection, it would be better to just opt for the NES Mini and hack it to have the library. None of the budget consoles have gotten Super Mario Bros sound right. So you are going to have better sound on the NES Mini and better visuals. The only problem on that console is the lag in Punch Out, but the pros makes up for it. Not to mention that you can go to any big retail store and get the NES Mini for $60 or you can buy it from the Nintendo website.
best review about ever
Would connecting via the composite RCA cables result in less lag than the HDMI cable? I'm hoping Lon or someone else could help answer this because I'm looking to purchase one of these as a gift for my sister who used to love Duck Tales on NES.
Can we get an update on this console? How is it holding up and how often have you used it? Thanks, potential buyer
Fantastic video!
I gotta buy this one 😁 🎮
I wouldn't waste even $10 on this thing. The incompatibilities and the sound/color issues are just INEXCUSABLE in this day and age. It's not hard to replicate a NES god damn it, it's like they don't even try to do it, it's been over 30 years and all the patents have expired to the point where manufacturers can go to the copyright office and get a complete copy of exactly how to make a NES work. These companies are just being cheap and lazy. (I am not talking about the FPGA ones, they are the only ones doing it RIGHT).
Pixar The Great
At least the AVS isn't too pricey.
I have NES game and original NES Controllers
I bought this and put in ring king new cartridge. Turned it on and the screen is black nothing. I am very upset. The console is new. The store I ordered from said they cleaned the cartridge. It doesn't work.
nice review, clone cartridges works?
Most should.
Sounds like it's a noac with an upscaler slapped on... Has anyone opened it to confirm?
SnoopKatt MAH BOI
Do you have a playlist of all the clone NES's you review
Hello Lon. TV i have been wondering can the Hyperkin Retron HD play tengen cartridges
Will the NES Game Genie work on this console clone?
Also, will the controllers made for the console clone work on the original NES?
GG probably will need an adapter to fit
My Nintendo finally crapped out so I got this last night, the colour pallet is way off, I dont like it for some games but you get use to the off colors I guess. Other then that it seems ok.
Does it those homebrew games like Zelda?
If my game is from the 90's will it still work? Lol. 😛
Eu quero fazer um pedido desse aparelho
Lon my dude, that ring is looking loose.
Stunt ring
cool
this retron HD play repro carts?
Why does my retron 1 HD only Reads pal cardridges i need help
cardridges
Is the input lag very bad? Or is it OK to play the games?
It's not noticable when playing
I have this console. The HD on it stinks. I bought it so I could play Ninja Gaiden. The game was not compatible with the HD setting. I use this console with the composit cables on my HD CRT tv. It is pretty awesome that way. I can play Ninja Gaiden and SMB with no lag. The color and sound are a little off but it is not bad. I will say the controller that came with this thing is pretty freakin sweet though.
It's hilarious that Nintendo doesn't sell a way to do all this. Unlike Apple, they sure are leaving a lot of money on the table.
They don't get any money if you buy an old cartridge. They'd rather sell you an emulation solution.
Nintendo would rather sell this stuff on their virtual store. If they did sell an official modern NES or SNES that supported carts, they would lose money. Not only is it a niche’ market, but people would opt out of the virtual store and they would lose money on that front. It’s like N64 emulation is incredibly spotty and that’s why I paid $100 for a stack of N64 games from their virtual store on Wii U. I couldn’t get that kind of quality for that console anywhere else.
@@Deadsea_1993 just tried the classic nes and snes on switch lite.. it sucks balls.. the games look off, they are sped up and timing controller just doesn't feel right.
back to buying more real carts for my real hardware
I’m trying to play Tetris on mine but it isn’t reading, what should I do?
Clean the cartridge
@@LonSeidman I have. I cleaned it with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol
Does moding work on it
out of 20 games I own, only Mario 3 works. Everything else gives off a purple screen. My 16:9/4:3 button doesnt work. I have bent pins in the retron 1 hd.
nonya bizness do you have Godzilla monster of monsters on it?
The sound is a bit off...but I've heard far worse on other clone consoles...the graphics color palet is not a deal breaker either. The tight fitting cartridge slot is why I wouldn't buy one...I had a similar NES clone several years back that literally broke when I removed a cartridge after having used it for a few months...it never "broke in"...the pins or whatever inside the console bent & broke no matter how carefully I tried to remove the game. When he removed the game it sounded the same & looked like he struggled to remove it...that is a very BAD sign the same breakage may happen eventually. Also...as with the actual NES toploader, I'm assuming Game Genie will not fit....which is another deal breaker for me...cause i have an old game genie and the extra mail order code books(which contained cheats for later NES games made after the original codebook was published) i paid for with my allowance when I was a kid.
I'm guessing the SNES version has many of the same issues?
If the audio is wrong, it's garbage
This is not 40 USD in Romania this is twice
Does morning work on it
I rather use the wii
I think Batman sounds better out of the clone console. But it's definitely not accurate.
Lag because you used LCD screen
Game keeps getting stuck in it.
I don't know if this will break the carts or the nes I pull them from the bottom
Lon mate, the only way to play a NES game is on an old CRT TV.. with an old oldschool NES
eukat3ch not really
I actually very much enjoy playing on an HDTV using an original NES w/ the Hi-Def NES kit, it's such a good upgrade.
Danny C. Or get the Retron 2.
The Analogue NtMini and the Super Nt are the best way possible. I never knew what I was missing till I played them on Analogue's consoles. You can't go back.
I love having a CRT, but it's not for everyone.
1:23
My disappointment when i heard this…
Pure junk. DON"T buy one
I'd buy the ergonomic controllers & use them on an original if possible, the corners of NES controller always bothered me....unless the input lag comes partly from the cord. The mAjor turn off & deal breaker for me is the too tight fitting slot...that will break within a year, I've experienced that with a similar NES ret clone.
0:32 - So if you're not an "enthusiast" but you're just looking for a way to play those old games, why not just emulate them? Better than this trash...
Great review thanks!
