What are some titles you feel are better on a weaker system?
Arguably, Gradius 3 is much more fleshed out on SNES than on the arcade.
Also, the SNES version of Chrono Trigger is much better than the PS1 version.
You gotta remember that in the PS1 version of Lunar, Working Designs cut xp and gold in half, and doubled the HP/Attack of all monsters...
Because, of course they did.
I played the Japanese Saturn release before the PS1, and was surprised how different the leveling was.
I do LOVE the Sega CD version more because of how much WD screwed the PS1.
The Wii Ghostsbusters is more enjoyable than the PS360 versions.
Star Wars Episode 3 is much better on the GBA than on the DS.
Adventure Island 1 & 2 for the GB are more fair and control much better than the NES versions. Same for Milon's Secret Castle.
The NES Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 & 3 are much better than the awful SNES "remakes"
Punch Out for the NES is a million times better than the Arcade one.
The first 2 Harry Potter games are better on the GBC than the consoles versions because the GBC ones are RPGs.
The GBC and GBA Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are superior than the N64/GC versions purely because the portable versions have an RPG-like story mode.
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers and Return of the King are both good on portables and consoles, but I think the GBA versions are the better games because they are Diablo/Baldur's Gate clones.
There are some games that were better on consoles than arcade. Contra and Super C were WAY better on the NES as well as Bionic Commando and Turtles In Time.
Have you tried Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble yet? (New game for 2024)

Hey Joe, long time viewer here. I just wanted to thank you for keeping Gamesack going. It's been my favorite gaming channel since before Dave had to leave. Keep doing your thing man, it's much appreciated by us boomers here who grew up with the all these systems you cover
would've gotten into gaming in one's late 20s to early 40s as a boomer.
Don't be embarassed about gen X or Y 😌
Man, the editing on the end skit is TIGHT. It avoids that mistake that everyone makes, where there's a silence between each "character's" reply. Feels like real dialogue, kudos 1992 Joe!
Excellent episode. I was working on a similar topic but you nailed this so well I can put that to rest.

22:15 fun fact: The Master System version was officially credited to Sega, but in fact it was developed under contract by a brand new (at the time) studio called Arc System Works!

10:38 Shoutouts to JRPGs that have your party members follow you in the overworld
Just weird to mention lunar but timestamp me if pier solar was mentioned given genesis and other versions.
11:34 is better though let alone random encounters were terrible, no idea why vid would say it. Glad lunar touch on iOS overhauled things to be definitive.
12:22 just use basic attacks.
JRPGs? Seriously, can't we all just be friends and call them RPGs like they were originally dubbed.
@MrVariant Overwhelming majority of Lunar fans have the Sega CD version aa the Definitive, PSP and PSX are both laughably inferior. You are unequivocally wrong.
@jbailey690 you're taking this too seriously and omit those cool physical extras from the ps1 version. Let alone no comment on mobile that even has a boost mode. I pity you.
Psp has load times so I could understand that, but the opening with dyne and the other heroes for a prologue battle was cool.
@toejamandearl8110 it's a style of rpg, originating fron japan. I can't stand the false racist claim. Wanna call it turn-based with strategy grid based?

@@nessdbest8708 dunno, but I don't have much of a reason to doubt that it was from 1992 given that he looks young enough in that video for it to actually be from that year.

Awesome video. Cool seeing a video from you in 1992
Very cool
Great video. I have a suggestion for next time you do this: Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii >>> Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii U. (2015)
Rodea the Sky Soldier Wii is a pretty fantastic Wii game, feeling like a much improved descendant of Nights into Dreams. It was finished way too late in the Wii's lifespan to release so they ported it to 3DS and then upressed the 3DS version for Wii U and the Wii U version was notoriously awful. When it came out the Wii U version included the Wii Version as a "bonus" but it was the actual main product. The poor game got destroyed in reviews because the reviewers were reviewing the terrible Wii U version and treated the Wii version like a bonus rather than the main product, which is what it really was.
I'm one of the I think very very few proud owners of Rodea the Sky Soldier and still love it (Wii version) despite what everyone says about it.
I was wondering about that. I own it but only played the Wii U disc. I hated it. Now I know I need to check out the Wii disc.
The Rodea the Sky Soldier story is wild and if you do put it in a video researching it for a bit will baffle you. Amazingly enough the Wii game even looks better visually because the Wii U game is the 3DS version upscaled to HD and has 3DS quality assets. The big difference is the controls. Rodea Wii is one of the better implementations of the Wiimote's motion controls and I'd argue the one of the absolute best non-first party Nintendo Wiimote uses. Flight feels incredibly natural. Wii U version loses all of that. Rodea's just cursed it didn't come out in the Wii's prime in like 2009 or 2010.
Joe's 90s helmet hair is astounding
Sometimes context its just important. Tales of Phantasia on PS1 has more colors and cd audio, but the SNES version was an achievement for that console. Its a very Star Wars Special Edition vs theatrical thing.
I never played Lunar on the PS1, but I have the Sega CD version and can say without even bothering to hear the PS1 version, they shouldn't have touched the music. Lunar the Silver Star music on the Sega CD is some of the best in any game I've played.
You're lucky, all fans were dissapointed by the inferior PSX Remakes. They killed the franchise for crying out loud lol
@@jbailey690Jesus christ dude are you gonna copy and paste this same thing on every reply that mentions the game…?

Its weird how natural a fit Super Monkey Ball is to the GameCube, considering the original Monkey Ball is actually a Naomi arcade game.
It was originally going to be ported to Dreamcast. There was even a press kit sent out with DC screenshots.
I remember the GBA port being shockingly good.
@@crunchinjellyit's a prototype waiting to be discovered.
I 100% agree with Lunar. I love the Sega CD versions. Alex not having magic at the start really gave you a feel for how tough life could be without it. Once you got Nash, he easily dispatched enemies. And once Alex got Flame, things were way easier to deal with. The fact that the only person in your party who didn't use magic was Kyle, who was one of the toughest fighters in the region. Really puts things into perspective.
You are in the overwhelming majority of Lunar fans who all preferred the vastly superior Sega CD Versions. The PSX Remakes killed the franchise for crying out loud lol
@@jbailey690 The remakes were on the Saturn first. And both in graphics and sound, FAR superior to the Playstation. They were only in Japan though. While the Lunar 2 remake faired better since less was changed, it still lost some of the spirit of the Sega CD original, but almost made up for it with the better cutscenes. Lunar 1 though, yeah the Sega CD is far superior whether you're talking Saturn or Playstation.
If you get a chance though, check out the Saturn versions of the remakes. Visual effects are MUCH better, it almost looks like a newer gen game compared to the Playstation. Music is WAY better too.
@StormsparkPegasus I agree and co-sign all of this, I've played the Saturn versions which are definitely better and have the Saturn OST downloaded since some of it was better quality versions of the Sega CD Soundtracks. There's translated ROMs of the Saturn versions out there btw, definitely recommend them as the second best option after the SEGA CD OGs.
Awesome to talk to an actual fellow Lunar fan btw. I agree with Eternal Blue Complete being closer to the superior SEGA CD originals than the disssapointing inferior Silver Star Complete on PSX but even with that said battle system, skill and magic spell visual and sound effects, overworld exploration, sprite work etc etc were all still far better on the SEGA CD version of Eternal Blue. There were a few other changes but the one I hated most was how they cut the Hiro and Lord Leo bonding moment, when they were alone and fought side by side to escape Althenas Cult trying to murder them both in the tower. Also hated how they got rid of that awesome magic experience level up system under Ruby's menu in the Sega CD Original. I did like all of the Working Designs goodies for the Remakes though but agreed as for the games themselves the Sega CD OGs were far better, it's not even close either.
@@jbailey690 Yep...I liked the additional content with the floating goddess tower. But I just wish that could've been added to the original games without all of the changes.
Just got myself a 32X last week, still waiting for the patch cable to arrive. I can’t wait to play the best home version of Virtua Racing!
For as small as the library is for the 32X, there's some decent titles for the system. I highly recommend Virtua Fighter along with After Burner and Space Harrier. Shadow Squadron/Stellar Assault is also worth a look.
@@DatBeastard Thanks! I'll be sure to check them all out.
About Batman: Returns, there is an NES version by Konami. It's a nice beat em up game with awesome music.
I played it briefly, but the one life and no continues was a big bummer for me. Otherwise great!!
18:10 The catch with the Master System port is that you respawn right where you left off, you have more field of view, and you actually upgrade your batarang gradually by collecting icons.
I'm surprised Rodea The Sky Soldier didn't show up in this topic, probably one of the most emblematic examples
Not really.
Absolutely loved Lunar back in the late 90's!
Seeing Joe flex his Monkey Ball skills is always a delight.
Such a great episode. I’m thrilled by how inventive your content is after so many videos.
Good to know that Joe's deadpan humor has been a staple of Game Sack since the Early 90s, assuming that it already existed by then. Now that's dedication.
I found Joe (and Dave!) a couple weeks ago and have binged what must be a couple hundred videos since then. Absolute gems, all of 'em. Thanks for the hard work over the years.
Glad you're enjoying the show! :)
The only things SMS Batman Returns did better over Game Gear was having a higher framerate and not "resetting" a boss fight for dying... only a Game Over can cause a reset (really lives counter is more like a HP counter lol).
Fun fact:
SMS Batman has a wrong warp glitch where if you damage boost yourself onto the bus and then land on top of it, by holding right to touch the edge of the screen you wrong warp to level 5. Speedruns use Route 2 for lv1 because the wrong warp takes Batman to level 5-4, the last platforming segment before the boss.
Lastly, I still think GG Batman Returns and GG Shinobi games share the same engine.
1) Same framerate
2) Similar lifebar hud
3) Similar grapple swings
4) Separate screen for magic
The best intro a retrogame show can have. Thanks Joe.
Whenever I go online, I always look for glorious Sack

This is a great subject, I'd love a whole series of these
Can we talk about for a moment the fact that Double Dragon on the NES has the best soundtrack out of all versions of the game, putting even its arcade parent to shame?
I'm glad to see Joe's sense of humor has been just as unhinged at least since 1992!
I was a couple months old when you made The Joe Redifer Show. Your sense of humor hasn't changed a bit.
100% do a part 2! Really enjoyed this one!
"Time Boner!" Ah, Virtua Racing...
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought that.
People hear what they wanna hear, I guess...
TIME BONEH
Joe should add a new cut away where he goes “did you just say boner?”
It's like Sega Rally devs when they loved the UK so much that when you finish a race the guy shouts BRITIIIISH everytime.
8:21 looks like ALL versions of Virtua Racing do the center-axis rotation thing - It’s just way more egregious on the PS2 version - the car starts pivoting it at the slightest tilt of the stick, in a much more pronounced way that other versions. Always made that version feel a little slippery to me, even if it actually controls rather well
So Joe's comedy bits haven't changed in over 30 years!

Double Dragon on the NES was dope. That brings back happy memories
Always a pleasure to watch a new Game Sack video. Thank you for all that you do!
The opening segment on games was pretty good but happy to see the Joe Redifer Show return.
Since you are such a fan of Monkey Ball enough to recognize the subtle differences in control, I am going to recommend you look up a game called Rolled Out, which delivers the most authentic Monkey Ball experience since the original.
Couple things worth mentioning. The Genesis port of Double Dragon's rom patch that greatly improves the audio does more than just music, making the game sound like the arcade. Voices and things like the garage door opening sound have been corrected. Concerning Lunar: Silver Star, the Saturn release has been translated, I believe using the Working Designs script and audio.
If you haven’t checked it out in awhile(or at all), the mobile version of Lunar SSSC got a major upgrade recently that allows you to do stuff like speed up the game, use the SCD UI, use the Saturn OST, and more! It actually controls really well now, and a similar upgrade was applied toward Vay as well, though not as comprehensive.
Will give it a go but the Sega CD versions are by far the best, it's not even close either.
Does the mobile version have a new translation, or is it still Working Designs'?
vay was actually hard .......
@@rodrigoprataorge1471 It uses the Working Designs script, but the dubbing and cutscenes are from the PSP version as far as I can tell.
This deserves easily a another episode
Completely agree with your take on Lunar. Once you have played the Sega CD Version, the PlayStation one feels wrong in many ways.
Its funny all the so called quality of life improvements they made are exactly what I wanted but kinda hate now.
What about the PSP, GBA, IOS and Android releases?
PSP is the best version by far. Its more of a remake actually. It has all the features, great soundtrack and cutscenes are very good looking. The GBA version is a really inferior version. More of a side/handheld version not the whole game.
@@rechtehaberI absolutely hate the PSP version, the flash like graphics take away from the charm. To each their own.

We love you, Joe. Never change. And judging by that ending skit, you never will lol
Batman return of the joker on NES is one of the most clear examples for this topic. it kicks the ass of the SNES and Genesis versions.
And the graphics are so good that it even looks like an early Genesis game
I was almost going to post the same comment. Surprised it didn't come up with how Batman-heavy this video was!
@@ramonmarcondes3915 I wouldn't say that, it's clearly NES graphics, based on the palette. But it looks far better than the Genesis and SNES versions, just due to having better artists who really knew how to work within the limitations.
Makes me wonder what the ports would have looked like had Sunsoft developed them internally.
This was a fun episode, love seeing this type of stuff....

Wow, I never had a change to sit down with the PC-Engine but it was amazing to see how many graphics where used in the Mega-Drive version and also the music!, which has some real bangers!! Little rabbit hole to dive into! Keep up the creativity
I played Lunar 1 when i was ten or so from a cousins handmedown mega tower of power, then emulated the PS version on psx some years later. I couldnt put my finger on it but noticed the game was more of a 'drag' to grind in, but just assumed i was more easily entertained when younger. Now I know 20 years later my gut feeling was right. lol
Sega CD versions of both Lunars are far better in every way
Would love to see this as a series
With the thumbnail featuring a Sega CD and a PlayStation, Lunar The Silver Star came to mind straight away. I feel the same way for the same reasons - music, story changes, and being slower. And, random encounters just fit that adventure so much better, Eternal Blue also. It's a shame that the 32-bit remake ended up being the basis of many re-releases while the brilliant OG was left to be forgotten.
A best of both worlds remake would be awesome. But it should have happened long ago, I think all the re-releases of the weaker game have killed all interest in the franchise.
Kind of odd to see so much crossover with Sega Lord X's latest video!
Does the Saturn version have the same drawbacks as the PS1?
@@Edexote Yes, apart from, IIRC, the game is on one disc so you don't have to swap, and the music is better quality although it's still the changed tunes. I've no idea why the PlayStation version needed an extra game disc. I don't think there was any additional content but I might be wrong.
I forgot to mention, Alex was an almost completely silent protagonist in the 16-bit version, and I preferred it that way also.
I need to see more of your older skits! I also love how early 90s it is with Sonic and T2 in the background/props!

Joe pioneered the Talk Show in Profile format, where you observe the conversation like an onlooker in an airport or restaurant.
Lunar is one of the games I like the older version better, too. ESPECIALLY Eternal Blue (UnWorking Design Patch is a must, though...). The pixel art cutscenes are much more impressive than the compressed Anime FMVs of the PS1/Saturn version. They just aged better.
Yeah it's not even close either, the Sega CD versions are vastly superior.

It is, I've got a copy. I had a Genesis copy back in the day. From the sound of it, even the Genesis version is better than the Saturn one.
Excellent video & humor. Please never stop making videos.
I played Lunar on PS1 first then when I learned there was a Sega CD version that came out years before it I had to get it. I've played/own every version. Those two, the GBA version and the PSP version. I've played them all more than once and can say with certainty the Sega CD game is my favorite version.
I like it better for all the reasons you gave. I even like little things like the character portraits I think are better. They come off as more charming, at least to me. And, lastly, I just love the opening theme song on Sega CD way more than the PS1 theme song. The PS1 theme is epic, and I love it, but the Sega CD theme gets me really pumped up to play it. It's the only RPG theme song of the 8-16 bit era I can think of that has a shredding guitar solo in it! That goes a long way for me. It comes down to preference, but that version just appeals to me more.
You are in the overwhelming majority of Lunar fans who all preferred the vastly superior Sega CD Versions. The PSX Remakes killed the franchise for crying out loud lol
@@jbailey690 I don't know if I'd go that far as it introduced far more people to it and did well enough for Eternal Blue to be on the system unlike PSP. I mean it did get GBA and PSP remakes, so there was still interest. While we didn't get it over here there was Magic School Lunar for Sega Saturn. What killed it was Lunar: Dragon Song for DS. That one was an abomination against all things God and Man.
@chaospoet it doesn't matter how far you would go, lol you are objectively wrong. Not getting Lunar 3 and getting the vastly interior, vastly underperforming PSX Remakes instead, especially with all of the goodies that came along with them instead of a quality game are what killed the franchise. Game Arts/Working Designs etc were all RIP'd over this awful decision/Remake situation, they didn't recoup nearly enough and HAD to keep remaking it because that's all there was a budget for. I've been there since the beginning of Lunar back in 1992, I would know.
This is a great ending , it's insane to think how much legit talent this man has
No system can truly compete with the unmatched power of the 16 bit sega genesis combined with the the special features and the wonders of disk based technology provided by the sega cd!

Aw yeah, new Game Sack!
The sprite animations on Batman NES are fantastic!!! Especially the wall jump reposition.
Have to agree with your Lunar take. While the PS1 version has all the updated bells and whistles, its focus on presentation slows down battles whereas the original felt snappy. Also thought the plot was subtraction by addition. It felt unnecessary and lost a lot of things that made the original feel more "special". Anyway, someone talked about Lunar so I have to say something.
Great episode!
You are in the overwhelming majority of Lunar fans who all preferred the vastly superior Sega CD Versions. The PSX Remakes killed the franchise for crying out loud lol
Hahaha! Thanks for that end skit, Joe! That was an unexpected treat.
About Lunar: Joe is absolutely right! Lunar:the Silver Star in the Sega CD is much better (feels better, extremely charming, much better music, super 90's Working Designs translation, there's even a "Ginsu Knive-set" joke). But the Playstation version is, as the title says, "complete". You actually get to meet every dragon with a complete dragon trial for every one of them, there's more items and the cons back bit, after Ghaleon defeats you, is much longer. You understand why the Goddess made the choice to incarnate and it fits better with the second game. The music, although different for some reason, had the same composer, so, you'll find odd, but they are not bad at all. Just avoid the Game Boy Advanced version.
You are in the overwhelming majority of Lunar fans who all preferred the vastly superior Sega CD Versions. The PSX Remakes killed the franchise for crying out loud lol
Your animation skills are great! I also saw the stop-motion one earlier with the game cartridges.
I agree about Virtua Racing having too much dithering in the MD version but I disagree about CRT blending. It depends on the game and resolution. Virtua racing uses a lower horizontal resolution which doesn't benefit as much from the CRT blending. Also it dithers the entire screen at once, so theres no miracle, but still works better than any current display anyway. But you can go play Kirby to see an excelent example. Transparency is pure 'dither' stripes and it is never visible on CRT, but it uses higher resolution in those elements
yeah the resolution and just overall obscenity of the graphics is the problem there. a lot of PS1 titles look great on CRT.
@@TheJacklikesvideos The color depth o PS1 helps a lot and indeed it looks awesome
This is a genius concept, keep up the super creative content.
And no, your not wrong. the best version of Lunar is definitely on the Sega CD, which I think is a severely underrated console. I honestly don't care for the remakes, I'd rather play the originals.
