Actually, I love the compass bezel.. In the northern hemisphere if you point the hour hand at the sun, the line that bisects the hour hand and the 12 is your south/north line....I do this all the time for a quick compass/direction check.....If your bezel has cardinal markers (n/s/e/w) then you can rotate it to give you an even clearer indication of your direction of travel!
Yes Rob: This has been one my favorite new releases in awhile. Back when I was a smokejumper we used to carry (2) bright orange panels (1 foot X 10 feet). When all the guys had jumped safely we would make a double L (LL) on the ground to tell the aircraft that everyone was OK. This was back in the day before we were all issued radios. Back then only 1 radio went out the plane with the fire boss for that fire. If the radio broke the panels were the only way to communicate with the airplane. Sort of like making an SOS with rocks on a deserted island.
I bought mine through Mimos (Thanks for suggesting them in your unboxing video RR!!) and love it. The Tortoise is such a great looking, unique watch. They did offer a discount code that took quite a bit off the 525 price tag. After a couple weeks and working on it a bit, the strap is getting a little softer and is pretty comfortable.
Bought the green one on metal bracelet after watching review from Mimos, great guy, and amazed at the quality and level of finishing for a watch at this price range. My first land turtle and it won’t be the last one. Great review!
Hi Rob - rushed on the web and got one of these beauties the day I saw your unboxing video. Wauw - it is the best buy I did in the whole of 2021. Popped it on a light green Nato and it had just had so much daily wrist time (you are right about the strap).
Only bought one Seiko in 2022, an SRPE39 King Turtle for $387. Mostly collecting Seiko homages now as they all have Seiko movements, sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel inserts for a fraction of the cost of a Seiko. With many Seiko reissue models priced at $1000 and even low end 5 models at $200 to $300 I find very few I would want. This model in this review is one of the few I might consider.

Strangely even though I still enjoy watching Seiko content, my Seiko days are basically over. I have no urge or desire to buy another Seiko, except Grand Seiko.
Yeah!! I'm definitely vibing with this this line. The Green one you showcased looks great, the Blue is beautiful, the Rose Gold adds that elegance to it, and the Black one is just classic/timeless. Will definitely be picking one up, just not sure which one.
Man, I just got the Citizen PCAT CB5918-02L, so the blue one. Okay, so I was considering getting the SRPG15J1 the blue one, but I think I should go with this Green variant. This way I can have something different in my wardrobe. Have another watch to justify some more straps. In RPG's when you do that, it boosts something maybe Charisma +5. 😂 🤣

@@John-dv1uysome are- like the Marinemaster. There are some prospex models that are have as little as 100m of water resistance, like the solar speedtimers for example.

One of your colleagues just announced he was giving up covering Seiko mid-priced watches because of the repeated problems he'd faced finding "good" / no problem watches. Awful quality control is a serious issue for Seiko. You're coming close to this... but what's your view ? Would a content creator ban, and loss of free advertising you provide, shake them out of their indifference to customers ??
@@DanboShaw I didn't see that. My understanding is that it depends on the serial or reference numbers where they are made. I only buy Seiko's when I travel to Japan and I have never had a QC issue. What I am suggesting is that somehow Seiko may be selling the problem watches to the overseas market. Japanese customers are perfectionists and would not put up with defects.
It's interesting and questionable why Seiko put a sapphire crystal on this, and not the usual Hardlex, but won't put sapphire on other watches if this price. For this quality, they should have included a 6R35 movement.
I've been hoping they would do a 6105-8000 sized case, this is closer but not quite right in proportion. Even aftermarket the 6105-8000 case hasn't really been reproduced
Nice that Seiko is making something smaller for people with diminutive wrists. Not for me, as the case is too round and the bezel compass isn't for me, but the color is awesome. Looks like the bezel is aligned. You got lucky!
Did no one spot the hole in the bezel around 1 o'clock. Misalignment is one thing but an actual hole in a new watch?? I know this is an olde video but the watch is still kicking around.

Best of that lot. Elements of turtle, mini turtle, samurai, and better than them. If the movement dies in 10 years you could spend the large dollars to buy a 6R for it and it'd be a wise update.
Some are calling it the "new mini turtle". I am really interested in how it compares to the original mini turtle and the SKX! Is it smaller or bigger in wearability then the mini turtle?
I really dig the rosegold version of the land tortoise, but most I see doesn't have the "made in Japan" writings at the bottom of the dial. Do you know if they're made somewhere else? thanks
There is no better beater watch than the turtle. I got my SRP777 pre owned, minty fresh, for 200$ I mean you cannot beat that value. If you have the wrist the turtle covers so many bases.

Can you confirm if the willard or turtle bracelet would fit the tortoise. I plan to buy a tortoise. I preferred bracelet over straps. I want to get separate bracelet for it.....
Maybe someone can send you the old Landmaster/Fieldmaster Seiko Tuna, the SBDC011 for a review. I got one a month ago, they are pretty hard to find now, and it's basically what everyone was asking the MM300 Tuna to be, an automatic with a sapphire crystal. I like this new Landmaster with a turtle like case and I like the color scheme also. It also seems that they've nailed the QC on this particular watch this time around.
Don’t buy from Mimos in the link. If you need to return watch because the bezel doesn’t align, etc. they will charge you a re-stocking fee. Too many places offer no restocking fees, no need to shop at these stores that rip you off.

Uh, Rob. Calling this watch a "Land Tortoise" is analogous to calling Taylor Swift a "female woman." Tortoises are by definition land animals in contrast to turtles that live principally in water environments.
This looks like a decent watch and the sapphire crystal really bumps it up. The compass bezel insert is a miss IMOP. However, Seiko has lost my business some time ago with their poor quality control, or rather lack of quaity control and the price creep. I no longer recommend Seiko's as good, well made entry level dive watches to friends. As interesting as this watch looks, I am still not in.
Sounds like Seiko is drawing you back in.... Just bought the Spb187 and the 6r35 is plus 1 on the time grapher dial up but minus 20 in regular wear....in spec but poor performance for such an expensive piece. It tests us.
Nice cheap watch for the starter, nothing special if you already have some serious Seiko clocks then don't hesitate, or you have to use her as a daily change watch or once for the holidays. For me a return
Three things I'm not a fan of, lack of drilled lugs so I'm not scratching the case (personal preference) the NWSE references, just serves no purpose and isn't attractive, finally a 20mm lug on this size case.

Seiko is one of the most fun brands out there...some cool designs.

Fun Fact: There are 3 minutes and 45 seconds between each mark on the Bezel, in case you want to use as a Timer.
You gotta give it to Seiko, they don't have to worry about lining up the bezel if you use friction and a wide "N" indicator.

Eric I suspect the Asia made not the made in Japan models are the ones with QC issues.

Guessing so. Many of not most Seiko models have a JDM version with different part number. They are the same watches usually.

They do for few minutes, but I don’t buy them now.

No purpose for you, perhaps. If you are a hiker/backpacker, the compass bezel is a navigation tool. It’s meant to be a field watch, clearly.
