I read somewhere there is no AR coating on this tortoise so that u can use the glass as a reflecting device in case u get stranded/ship-wrecked on a deserted island and u want to attract the attention of a passing bird.
Good Saturday morning Jody. Start with JOMW, then breakfast, then get ready to watch Arsenal try to do something, anything against City. Oh well at least the day started off with JOMW
Wife got it for me for Christmas -- $300 USD for the best sub-$1,000 field watch out there -- the same size as a Hamilton for 30% less money and far more WR. It also doesn't look like every other boring field watch (the pumpkin spice latte of the watch world -- it's good, but it's "basic" as hell).
Cracking looking watch for sure. I didn’t even notice the date at 4:30 until you mentioned it! Am I the only one who doesn’t get the whole compass bezel thing? I’d much rather have a countdown or timing bezel every time. This might be because I live in the UK though so if I was ever lost in the wilderness I’d die of starvation/exposure just waiting for a break in the clouds so I could find the sun! I wouldn’t even have chance to use the bezel 🤣 The only Sun I see is on sale in the local newsagent 📰 😂 Great review as always Jody 👏👏👏👏
I think a second time zone dial semi GMT dual actually be the slightly more useful bezel for most people.....I don't know anyone who really uses a diver bezel for timing anything..... Except maybe for fun.
I’ve grown to like the 4:30 date. Being that we get a full-sized 3:00 index and a big draw to Seiko for me is their mind-blowing lume, I’m okay with the asymmetry. That said, I’d rather have no date than an asymmetrical date window, with lume taking a greater priority for me.
@@lowersaxon Realistically? Not much beyond looks. But years into this hobby and lume still amazes me, especially really bright, long-lasting lume. With that said, once our world reaches some semblance of normalcy, it will be nice to be able check the time in dark environments like the theater without pulling out my screaming-bright phone. Discretion is probably the biggest benefit of lume in the modern world of cell phones and dive computers, aside from aesthetics.
The color scheme it fantastic. I’m not a Seiko fan, but this is a great looking watch. Wish more green watches went to a more pale green/OD green/olive green like this.
I think the day location is ideal. My eye does not even notice it. People complain when the day is at 3 and breaks up the dial markers. Then they complain when the day is in an off position. Seiko really has some cool watches. Just got the SRPE51, looks awesome. This model is just another instance of Seiko just coming out with something that ticks all the boxes and just looks great.
Date at 4ish looks better than 3 imho, tho I'd prefer it without one...dislike the leather backing on the strap (veggie since 1982) but otherwise I'm tempted. Good review, Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Another great t shirt. I must say, if you are lost out in wilderness with only a watch to find your way, and not a compass, you have more problems than finding south. I really like this watch, I might have to pick this one up. I might mod to the bezel for a 24 hr insert. A gmt of sorts might be more useful to me personally. Love the different strap ideas.
I've seen a lot of comments on the stiffness of the strap and the watch standing proud or crushing your wrist - my wife got me one a couple of months ago for my birthday and I've worn it every day since. I was going to swap the strap out immediately for a NATO one, but my wife kicked up a stink, so I held off. Happily, I can confirm that the strap actually softens up and "weathers in", so it's not actually an issue long term. My only two gripes with this watch are that in green/beige the hands are almost the same shade as the face, so in certain daylight conditions it can actually be hard to read! Secondly, while closing the press-studs at the wrist on my motorbike jacket, the bezel actually dented very slightly, so that's something to bear in mind - it's not as heavy duty as it looks! Other than that, I really like this watch. I wasn't going to get one as I was umm-ing and ah-ing between saving up for a proper Willard (SPB237J1) or getting one of the very sexy "grenade face" turtles (SRPE05K1), but the Mrs got me this as a surprise. Now it's on my wrist I really like it. With the compass bezel it's different to any other watch I've got, it's light so it's not uncomfortable and doesn't get in the way, and the design is really well thought out. It looks really smart, without being ridiculously formal, so you can amost wear it anywhere, and the emergency codes on the back, although I can almost guarantee I'll never need to use them, are a really cool addition. I love it!
Just picked up one of these in blue. Thought my King Turtle was my End All Be All Seiko...but this one takes the Title. The size is PERFECT for my 7" wrist. Put on an aftermarket silicone strap, it instantly melts into my wrist. Home Run Seiko! The only thing better would be the same exact watch with Diver insert and 120 click bezel!
Picked this up because it doesn't have a day complication or a cyclops like the others. Love the 4:30 date instead. Also did pick up the J model rather than the K. If I'm buying Seiko, I want it to be fully Japanese-built.
over 400 watches? that would be too many for me to even look at routinely, let alone remembering that I owned them or finding the time to wear them. I guess it's like collecting art.
Yeah I guess it’s like sneakers, I only own a few pairs and wear them to death, but others buy them purely for display, or even just leave them in the box.
I have five, four of which get regular wrist time--my Citizen Promaster GMT diver has replaced the Stauer Urban Blue as my dress watch. I too don't like owning watches I don't wear--it just feels kind of extravagant.
Best thing about this watch is how well it wears. The sapphire the build quality of the case and face and the indices and hands. Very good value for money! Great review. Shame you were underdressed!
Seiko are doing a wonderful job depleting my bank account. Just bought the Black Series Samurai SRPH11, now still more decisions to make. Love ya Jody, hellllllo from Ohioooooo! 😃
I saw these in a big shop in Tokyo. The black dial with gilt/gold accents one looks amazing in person. I would probably have bought it if it wasn’t for my other 2 watches with the same colour scheme 😅 (BB58 and a Seiko Turtle that is). Personally, I like the both the thinness of it and the handset better than the turtle.
I didn’t even know this one existed, until I happen to see one in the store. Gotta say one of the most underrated watches for the price. No complaints at all, apart from the leather strap being so stiff for the first week.
I’m quite happy with my couple of Seiko. Specially the Sharp Edged GMT LE 😎 Never a QC issue and I use a magnifier to check. I might be lucky I guess...

The bi-directional bezel is no big deal as how many of us REALLY use it all that often anyway, plus this one is a nice clean look. Thanks for another brilliant review - Keep up the good work.
I wanted a compass bezel watch a while back and picked up the SKZ209J1 Seiko 5 Atlas. 200m water resist with internal compass bezel and outer dive time bezel with day and date. 7S36 but at around $200, not a bad alternative. Give it the Seiko shake and off to the races. People complain about the compass bezel being "loose", but that is so you can single finger adjust it on wrist for a quick direction fix and go.
I have this watch. The strap looks great on this watch, the strap starts out stiff but it breaks in after awhile. Great watch including strap in my opinion.
As always love your reviews and how well thought out you get your points across. Thanks for the share! I jz got this colorway, and said to myself no more seiko, but they suck you back in with their price point. Now looking at the Blue & Blk versions, omg.
For the strap, applying some leather conditioner or cream might help. The problem with practically all cheap leather (jackets, belts, bags) is that the leather has not been conditioned at the factory and has dried up, making it stiff, I'd imagine watch straps are no different.
450 watches.......and there's me thinking I'm great with 15! Lol btw, a tip to soften a stiff strap quickly.... roll it up tightly as if you're rolling up a carpet. Do it about 10 times and you have a nice strap curved to fit your wrist..👍👍
I've got the silver case with black, gold and copper colored accents version, swapped the black leather strap out for a Marine Nationale with copper clasp and it looks great.
Great review! I bought my son a Seiko black tortoise for Christmas as he indicated that was what he wanted when I suggested a good watch might be a good present. I have had a good look while wrapping it and like it. Although it's not quite my thing (I prefer the regular turtle) it is very nicely finished and the feel of quality is excellent for the price. I am with you on Seiko and price, the cheaper Prospex series watches are excellent but some of the high end ones with the same movement seem to jump up in price by huge amounts yet I struggle to see a reason why. I still want a Willard but the only ones I ever see sit at the top of the Prospex price range (other than the special editions with GS type movements). The tortoise is what a Seiko should be to me, solid and with a nice feel at a sensible price. I notice some of the Seiko 5 models also seem to be getting very expensive given they used to be a great entry point into mechanical watches.
Nice review and watch, but for that price, I'd get a ceramic bezel with a Steel Dive watch. I have this strap on my Seiko Worldtimer, GMT solar (purchased after watching your review!). I rolled mine up tight a few times Like a fruit roll-up, if anyone remembers them, and then I left it attached to a watch winder holder for a few days and it rounded the shape out nicely. It is a very well made and comfortable strap.
Any plans to take a look at the Nezumi Tonnerre? I know you've talked favorably about them in the past and this model really caught my eye, so I'd love to hear your thoughts before I purchase.
The survival markings and compass stuff is pretty funny. Presumably if you were actually going off track in the bush you’d have a Gshock or Protrek on with AB/compass not a dressy diver.
If the sun doesnt shine you will be out of luck? No, with this Seiko on the wrist the sun will always shine for you. Remember, its a tool watch. So then. You save up the money for no compass, you buy this Seiko and with the money so saved you buy another strap. A Nato of course, because if you lose the watch some Ranger will find what is left from you, say, 20 years later. And that clearly is not what you want. All in all, life can be so easy, thank you Seiko!
I love Seiko Made in Japan models. You know the quality will be flawless.. Great review but strange pronunciation of Tortoise 🐢 I am glad you haven't abandoned Seiko reviews all together 🤔
Been looking at these as a new field watch and it definitely hits the spot. Liked the king turtle but I wanted something a bit slimmer wearing without a cyclops/day complication. I'm going to grab the new night vision one when that drops!
I like most things on that Seiko. (Love the colours) .Except for the date window between 4 and 5 o'clock. I wished they left it out all together. (I would switch out the strap anyway.)
It would be worth buying one of these just for the rarity value of a Seiko with sapphire. If the strap is an issue a Bartons canvas one would retain the look but as there is no leather involved they are very comfortable straight out of the box.
Yep! Definitely the tool to find your way if one gets lost in the suburbs. Haha. Bring twigs to signal for help. 🤣🤣🤣. I'm a sucker for green, but I'm not sold on the dial color. Still a nice watch.
I like the look. Not sure about the bezel. The normal dive watch bezels are fairly useless (how many people time anything with a watch bezel?) but at least they are simple to use. The scale on this field watch bezel is ridiculous.
The colors on this one are very nice. Shame about the strap, it really suits the watch. The date doesn't really bother me. I know a lot of folks are fussy about date placement but I'm not too bothered. Unless it's something like the Prospex Alpinist reissue where they slapped a big ol' white date wheel on that beautiful green dial and a cyclops to make sure you can't miss it 😂😂 The Turtle is still one of the most comfortable cases for my money!
While I like the look of some Seiko's, I only own one, being the Seiko SNJ025 "Arnold." Can't go wrong with a watch that went to war with the Predator and I really like the way it wears. Just wish I could get a Sapphire Mod for it though. First comment after watching Jody for the last 4 years. Keep it going.
I really like that but if one ends up in my collection the strap will be first to disappear followed by swapping the bezel insert for something with minute indices .
Great design. The strap needs a bit of wear to fit actually good. I just don’t find the compas bezel usefull as you just need the hour hand and the sun. Even easier in case you have a 24h hand. At least you get less QC issue on the bezel... 😅
Great review! I personally like the 4:30 date, but would be best if they can turn the text counter-clockwise to read more "upright"... Also, luming the cardinal directions on the bezel might be a good idea, too...

Been looking at these as a new field watch and it definitely hits the spot. Liked the king turtle but I wanted something a bit slimmer wearing without a cyclops/day complication. I'm going to grab the new night vision one when that drops!
Lovely looking Watch, and probably very comfortable too.
Although, I'd always Prefer a Dive style Bezel or a GMT.
I've got a feeling that, if they start building mod parts for this one, it could be a mod monster.
Good looking piece
Saw this last week in person, it looks even better. This one's good
Was waiting for this. It has that SBGV245 beige color that has me enamored. Hope you're doing well Jody.
Thanks for watching Enzo!
nice i like it.... there around £490 here in uk
Wow! What a marvelous case/size! I expected a turtle case. I dig the handset as well.
I like most things on that Seiko. (Love the colours) .Except for the date window between 4 and 5 o'clock. I wished they left it out all together. (I would switch out the strap anyway.)
Jody! I don't believe I've ever heard you cuss lol, 4:11. Love the channel mate.
It would be worth buying one of these just for the rarity value of a Seiko with sapphire. If the strap is an issue a Bartons canvas one would retain the look but as there is no leather involved they are very comfortable straight out of the box.
Always fun to watch your videos Jodie !
Yep! Definitely the tool to find your way if one gets lost in the suburbs. Haha. Bring twigs to signal for help. 🤣🤣🤣. I'm a sucker for green, but I'm not sold on the dial color. Still a nice watch.
I like the color combination
That’s a great looking watch. Thanks for the review. I’m with you on the date window, but they do add functionality. I could live with it.
It's the best (value) new Seiko of late, no more and no less. Cracking on an olive Marine Nationale!
Damn that is so nice looking looks better than a submariner.
I like this one, a style I've been looking for actually
I like the look. Not sure about the bezel. The normal dive watch bezels are fairly useless (how many people time anything with a watch bezel?) but at least they are simple to use. The scale on this field watch bezel is ridiculous.
I bought the blue version, im very happy 😊
The best looking one imo.
Good to see a Seiko adding sapphire and no cyclops, result
Beautiful 😍 piece
Just got a king turtle with waffle 🧇 (green) dial
And this still a temptation
I like this one, nice design and their canvas straps are always ahem firm…
Looks great. Best colours for the model
Love the colour 👍
BAHAHA! Good get out clause you crafty ninja! Loved this video J.
I really like that but if one ends up in my collection the strap will be first to disappear followed by swapping the bezel insert for something with minute indices
.
You can't use the compass function without the sun in the sky anyway.
Yo! Jody said “that stiff ass strap” im dying
Jody… good video but can I just say today alone I have been asked if I was wearing a rolex no less than 3 times. I was wearing my red orient kamasu……….🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️non watch people man
Everything lines up! Hallelujah!
Lovely looking watch, looks great on the marine nationale.
Perfect camping watch 👍
